"24 - Ep. 5.16 - 10-11 PM "
LAST EDITED ON 04-03-06 AT 11:06 AM (EST)

OK, right off the bat, we're told in the previous thread that, at the end of this episode, we get to see who is behind Christopher Henderson's activities and murders. So we'll open this thread early in case anyone wants to discuss their theories.

6. "Yes"
If you mean, will we see "Max" from season 2, no. I don't think "Max" was intended to be a key part. But, as we saw in the last 15 minutes of season 2, Max also took orders.

But otherwise, yes. I think that's the intent of this story line, and I'm glad the writers are moving in that direction.

Then again, I don't want to give too much away to people who don't want the show spoiled, so I'll return to this later.

There was a clip a couple of weeks ago that was supposed to give us a hint of what was going to happen. I saw that clip and noted the one character's unusual response, but I thought it was supposed to convey something very different than what it actually was supposed to convey. So much for my spoiling skills.

8. "...and the perp is..."
...President Charles Logan. At the end of the episode, after Jack rescues Evelyn and her kidnapped 8-year-old daughter Amy, we see Logan talking to Henderson on the phone. That explains the "unexpected twist" referred to in the Episode 5.17 press release; Jack had thought the VP was the mastermind.

Since all of CTU was fired except for Chloe, who was kept around by Audrey, who can Jack trust other than the two of them and Wayne and Aaron? Sorry, but five people aren't enough to bring down the president, even if one of them is Jack Bauer.

Then again, we have Martha Mitchell Logan. Would she turn on her husband if she knew her husband was guilty? The real Martha Mitchell did; she told reporters about the involvement of her husband John (Nixon's Attorney General) in the Watergate cover-up. Would Martha Logan do the same thing?

You can't just arrest the president, though. Or even the VP. Even when AG Elliot Richardson (Mitchell's successor) has incontrovertable evidence that VP Spiro Agnew had been taking bribes during his entire term of office, he agreed to let Agnew resign rather than prosecute him, as long as Agnew pled guilty to a bribery charge in court. But the charges against Logan (conspiracy to commit mass murder, and premeditated murder) are much, much more serious. So serious, in fact, that they're impossible to take seriously -- but we don't need to take them seriously in 24-land. We just need to go with the flow.

So, even if Evelyn has incontrovertable proof of Logan's nefarious activity, and even if Heller agrees to help his daughter and Jack instead of the President, there's a long way to go to get to a resolution -- which wouldn't be reached by 7 AM no matter how good Jack's evidence is.

As for the discussion above, I think this will tie back to the moneyed interests discussed in season 1 that initially supported Palmer.

Can I just say that I'm completely dumbfounded? My jaw dropped when I saw Logan though since everything pointed to the VP it only made sense that it would be Logan plus Jack kept mentioning how Henderson wouldn't let his wife die for anyone but someone very very high up in the Administration.

What I found interesting was that he had no idea Wayne Palmer was headed to the White House if Henderson was working for him or maybe he was just feigning surprise for the VP. The other and major thing that doesn't make sense to me is why? He is already the most powerful man in America and some would say the world. I can see how it might tie back to last season with the President getting shot down and him taking over but to continue just boggles my mind. What is he trying to get out of all this?

I'm with CSTL, I don't get the why. And? Sad to say I had a hard time focusing on last night's episode. It just didn't keep me interested, until the very last scene with Logan. And then I was, "Huh? Why?".

I'm with you there but he must be the smartest supervillian of all because he sure did manage to come across most of last season and this one as a half-wit. Just hard to believe he was smart enough to orchestate all of this. Obviously him and cummings must have been in on it together and the posturing about whether to admit Martha into the asylum and all of that must have been fake. It just opens up so many holes into why he acted certain ways at the beginning of the season when he knew he was never in any danger

Okay, the sons of beyotches got me again. I never saw that coming and I was completely flabbergasted. So much so that I had a hard time going to sleep just trying to figure out how I missed it and why Logan would be doing this.

At about 2am (!!!!), I gave up. The only thing I could conclude was that my new favorite character, Martha Logan, is definitely going to pull a Martha Mitchell. They tried to say MM was crazy, too. And she may well have been, but that didn't help big John.

Caveat - I'm writing this with the knowledge of the basic spoilers that are out there for the next few episodes. On the other hand, my thoughts about how it could play out are all speculation.

If Heller and the VP are actually good guys, and not involved, then there you could solve the problem by removing the president. Permanently. Jack hands Logan a gun and says "You can pull the trigger or I can, but however it happens, you aren't walking out of this room alive." Even better yet, "crazy" Martha Logan could kill him.

16. "Ack !!!"
I have a lot of questions, but right now I want to know how Walt Cummings fit into this? In the first few hours Logan was seemingly shocked that it was Cummings who helped secure the nerve gas. So did Logan conspire with Henderson to get Walt Cummings' help (without Cummings knowing Logan was involved) so that Cummings could take the fall if the plot was uncovered?

Is Logan really that good of an actor that he can be bumbling and surprised all the while carrying out this terrible plan?

What is this terrible plan?

Did Walt Cummings really kill himself or was he murdered?

Final question: Would Logan rather face an irate Jack Bauer or his wife? I'm thinking he'd prefer the wrath of Jack over Martha.

Hiya Augie!
Cummings was definitely murdered.
I do not know if he knew of the President's involvement, though.
Since both Pres and VP are jerks, who is going to replace them. Did the President die in the plane crash last year, or is he "recovering" someplace?

18. "Yes"
LAST EDITED ON 04-04-06 AT 06:59 PM (EST)

Yes, Max was the guy on the boat to whom both Peter Kingsley and Mandy reported.

But at the end of season 2, we saw Max get called by someone else (Trepkos) who told him that the plan had failed -- Kingsley was dead and the war was called off; Trepkos also told Max that he had warned him not to use Kingsley. That's when Max said that they'd have to go another way and made another call, which turned out to be to Mandy.

Logan was shown in extreme close-up in the last shot. He wasn't a happy camper, especially since Bauer had broken up Henderson's plan.
