"Project Runway - Barbie Episode"
I had to start a new thread as the other PR looks like it may turn into a monster. Let's discuss . . .

I loved the winning Barbie design. I have a 5 year old who is Barbie mad and will add it to her long list entitled "Mommy, Can I Have . . .?" Santino's was also very good, very Barbie. It did remind me of Austin's Nancy O'Dell Grammy dress though.

Worst designs? Marla-who-cannot-sew-even-though-she-is-self-taught, Andrea's I-think-the-skirt-is-stuffed-with-flotation-devices and the losing design which was dull as dirt.

Kara is slightly insane and foolish to have given up so much sketch time to hunting down a hat that she flung off an escalator. I was in and out of the living room during some of the episode. Did she whine about not having as much time as the other designers? Boo. Hoo.

Daniel is slaying me. His dresses are all very nice, but his "Daniel Shuffle" is a bit annoying. Also, he's reminding me of Whitney Houston's singing career - many versions of the exact same thing.

Miscellaneous: No drama from Zulema? I hope more is coming! Many thanks to Tim Gunn for letting Andrea know that his emotional outbursts are entirely unnecessary. Tall, blond guy is boring!

1. "RE: Project Runway - Barbie Episode"
I really enjoyed this episode, too. I was way off in who I thought the "fashion icon" was. During the show, as soon as they added that it was a "VERY IMPORTANT fashion icon" I knew it couldn't be SJP & I couldn't think of any NYC gal's house they were going to. Great twist to be Barbie.

The other great twist was the "surprise" instruction on their 2nd day that they would have to also make the same outfit for their Barbie doll. They should have expected it, but what stress to have to scramble to finish both the life size & doll size. I'm also sure that for some of them, it was really difficult to replicate on such a small scale with the fabrics & detail they put into their design. My first thought was how the heck is Diane, with that hood/collar thing going to go so small with those holes?

My 3 faves are still my top 3 (Nick, Santino & Emmitt). Nick's designs are generally more my taste (although last night's colors were a little out there for me, I LOVED the design). Santino is really creative & has great designs as well, although a little more over-the-top & less ready-to-wear. There is something about Emmitt I really like & I think I see a little bit of an Austin in him. His designs are feminine & flattering & I hope they show more of him to see a personality. I also really loved Chloe's design, really pretty.

I am really getting worried about Santino's poor sportsmanship, though. I thought it was a tough choice between his & Nick's designs & he should be happy he is consistently among the HIGHEST scores. I like competitiveness & if a person is tough on themselves, but he needs to quit showing disrespect to the winner & the judges or he's going to be OUT. In this show, it's not only your designs that you're being judged on. The preview for next week shows him getting defensive to the judges & he better watch his tongue & attitude or I am afraid they will cut him loose for NOT taking constructive criticism. I really want him to stay.

The cut last night was appropriate. That was absolutely horrible & did look like a country bumpkin look. I actually thought they both could have been cut, but I don't want the show shortened because I love it so much.

Daniel does turn out beautiful designs, but he obviously hasn't learned anything on the time issue. He is always ending up sewing it on the model & I'm sure a close inspection might reveal some flaws. I just don't think he should be back this season, either. Heck, if anyone deserved a second chance, IMHO, it was Austin who was robbed by Nancy O'Dell's bad taste.

I was also shocked there was no drama from Zulema with all the previews of her super b!t@chiness shown after last week's show. I'm sure we'll get an eyeful & earful very soon.

Agreement generally with everything you guys just said. Santino, Nick and Emmett.

I kind of second Santino's somewhat cruel motion of the first episode: Let's have a couple multiple cuttings and get to the real competition. There is no reason why Marla should still be around, except she's kind of Wendy Lite (nicer, but basically the same self-taught-single-mom scenario).

I loved the way they all looked holding their little Barbies.

Whathisface, the guy who's a headcase, is getting on my last nerve. And the bubble skirt is so last century.

3. "RE: Project Runway - Barbie Episode"
I love this show!

Okay, had to get that out of the way first. Now on to my thoughts on the fashion icon, the designs and the designers.

First of all, I love Barbie. My first experience in designing was making gorgeous flowing gowns out of Kleenex for my Barbie when I was about 8. I kept thinking...oh please lord, do not let it be Paris Hilton. And as soon as they stopped in front of ToysRUs, I knew it was Barbie. Woo hoo!

Now being of the age where I no longer buy Barbies, I was unfamiliar with the new trendy "My Scene" Barbie. But it was certainly the kid of doll I would have wanted at that age. Heck, I may even get myself one after all the Xmas craziness dies down. But I digress...

Onto the fun stuff!

Nick was hands down the best and deserved to win. He really understood the challenge. As soon as he started thinking about how the dress would look in the packaging, I had the feeling he was one the right track. Great fabric and color scheme and incredibly well thought out design.

Andrae's design was a bit riskier and as Nina said a little too couture. Bubble skirts are back (although not to that extreme) and while I loved the fabric and the color...it was a better choice for a dress up Barbie rather than for My Scene Barbie.

Daniel F's dress was okay but didn't really have that fresh and young look to it that was required for this contest. Plus he needs to work on his time managment!

Daniel V's design had the young look but is was a little too bohemian and boring.

I absolutely loved Diana's red top with the big holes and the huge hood/collar. Also, great way to interprret it on her Barbie-sized version too. However, the belt and the shoes were HORRIBLE and were a dreadful choice. She could have been a viable option for winning if not for those horrid boots.

Emmett's short blue dress with the long flowy sleeves was pretty but the sleeve caps looked as thought they were ill-fitting. It also lacked the funkiness required for this challenge. The look was a little too fancy and not enough funky.

Guadalupe's design was too bohemian and blah.

Kara's design came pretty close to the aesthetic required for this challenge...if it were for an 80's My Scene Barbie. The pink and the ruffles seemed a little too Debbie Gibson and not enough J Lo.

Marla's design was okay, she had great accessories but her color and fabric choices were too grown up. If she'd had the same outfit in lime green or fuschia and maybe an Indian print she would have done better.

Raymundo's dress was dreadful. He so deserved to go. I thought the judges were too kind. It didn't look like Barbie's mom, it looked like Barbie's landlord's spinster sister that has 27 cats at home. Pathetic. Although Raymundo's previous designs rocked so I'm sad to see him go...he had potential but blew it on this challenge.

Santino is clearly the judge's favorite and he knows it. However, I think he got this challenge all wrong. All the ruffles seem a little too 80's prom dress cut up and reused to me. It looked like Barbie dresses that you could have bought 15 years ago. Boring.

Zulema's dress was forgettable and not all that interesting. Great makeup on her model though and I liked the way she held the little mini purse.

Chloe's pink dress with the dark pink lining was great. I think that was my third favorite. Nice use of fabric.

Bravo has got a feature on their website where you can rate the designs after each episode. Check it out here

I'm so glad you joined us and are lvoing the show, too, because you will obviously provide lots of good "seamstress inside info." That was a great post.

Diana is proving to be an interesting addition to the season. That fabric was amazing.

Daniel's dress was so UnBarbie I thought they might send him home.

But I hope you're wrong about bubble skirts - I think they're silly.

5. "RE: Bubble skirts"
They can look good on models, but that's about it. Check out Balenciaga's Spring 2006 line.

Granted they aren't on the grandious scale of Andrae's pumpkin skirt, but they do have that bubble shape. It's one of the latest trends actually. Whether they call it a bubble, tulip or pouf, designers seem to like this silhouette for some reason.

Of course, I would never wear it. But I can appreciate the aesthetic nonetheless.

6. "RE: Bubble skirts"
I actually had a bubble skirt or two back in the 80s , but nowhere NEAR the bulbous size of the one Andrea created. I was a major 80s fashion victim back in the day. I thought they were so cute back then & shudder at the thought, now.

7. "RE: Project Runway - Barbie Episode"
First, a few disclaimers: I never played with Barbie, I can't sew or design fashion. But I like to see what the designers come up with and give my opinion.

I liked Andrae's outfit. It seemed very Barbie. Not as good for a real person, though.

I did not like Santino's outfit at all. I did not think it seemed Barbie like, and it wasn't pretty.

I thought Nick deserved his win, and Chloe was pretty much equally good.

My roommate actually knows Raymundo, so we were sad to see him go so early, but that outfit was totally the worst. I didn't like Emmitt's or Guadalupe's either.

In general, there are so many designers that it's hard to remember them all until it's down to 8 or 10 of them left. The judges sure have a hard-on for Santino, but I don't think he's that great. Editing seems to indicate that he, Chloe, Nick and Diana will be in for some time. And I don't like the return of Daniel, either.

There is like, nothing to watch these days so I am extra grateful Project: Runway is back, even though it can't possibly live up to last season. I swear I will never forget Starr's tumor dress.

Well, well, well. I'm going to preorder this ASAP!

I'm going to have to add the Season One DVD to my shopping cart considering I never got to see anything other than the finale.

I *heart* this show, can you tell?

I agree! But isn't he the one Tim said he knows from Parsons Design School?

As for future drama, I'm waiting for Heidi's reaction to Smartass Santino's, "Well, why don't you just hand out four auf wiederseins (sp?) and be done with it?"

HA!

We haven't seen the last from Zulema, I'm sure. She's too obnoxious not to cause more trouble.

Edited to kind of fix my German spelling.
