"Project Runway: Inspiration Challenge Recap"
Dramaaaaaa!

And Andrae gives us his patented look of shock at the news of Zulema’s model walkoff demand.

I’ve been waiting weeks to see what the heck was up with the walkoff ever since seeing the preview of it during the season premiere. So Zulema ends up taking Nick’s model (Tarah) and he’s stuck with her former model (Rachael). Needless to say Nick is none too pleased about this development and wallows in self-pity for a while. He seems to contemplate leaving but Daniel reminds him of his priorities.

After the walkoff, the designers meet with Michael Kors. He gives them a boring story about drawing inspiration from a photo. Then he hands out digital cameras. Their task is to walk around New York for an hour, take a bunch of photos, select one of those photos and use it as a basis of inspiration for their next garment.

I was hoping to share each inspiration photo with you, but Bravo only has the winning one up on their site so far.

Daniel: Winner!

Daniel’s garment is the epitome of inspiration. He took a simple photo of orchids (his first photo) and created something very lovely. Now, not everyone could wear this (myself included), however it really speaks of high fashion and originality. He certainly deserved this win and I think he’s a shoe-in for final three.

Zulema: Out!

Looks like a new model didn’t help her one bit. Her photo was of an African woman in an ethnic looking dress. I don’t know where she pulled this out of but I agree with the judges. The execution was poor and it was uninspiring.

Santino

Santino started out this episode by admitting that his ice skating dress was crap and that he was determined to take the judges’ advice this challenge and “do my best”. If this was his best, he should be out and spare me from any or his further cr@p. His photo was of graffiti. *yawn* Oh and did I mention there is more ruching and gathering on this dress and yet ANOTHER high waist. All of his over-embellishment in the past seems to have covered over the fact that his sewing skills are not really that great. That was evident this week. I am starting to wonder if he knows how to ease a seam at all, his technique is really lacking.

Nick

Nick had some real trouble with this challenge. He took a photo of some printed fabric in a shop window. The top has some resemblance to the top he did for the Clothes Off Your Back challenge and the skirt is yet another of his fishtail hems which Michael Kors points out later on the runway. I think he was really thrown by the loss of his “muse”. Hopefully he’ll be able to turn it around for the next challenge.

Kara

Three words: Blah. Blah. Blah.

Chloe

Chloe had a photo of a building, which was pretty linear. She has some very interesting tuckpleats happening here to echo the lines of the building. But I think it could have been more dynamic. I would have liked to seen some rectangular cutouts with piping or something like that to evoke that linear and geometric feel.

Andrae

Can you believe that this dress was inspired by a photo of dirty water in a gutter? Amazing work, really. It was subtle, stunning and really gorgeously done. Andrae certainly does have talent and I’m glad not to have seen any more emotional breakdowns as in the COYB challenge. He has a real shot for the final three.

LAST EDITED ON 01-26-06 AT 09:39 AM (EST)

Awesome recap!

Why was Andrae so worried about the model? She had worn the winning garment the previous week. I really don't see that they play a part in the judging.

Now we know why Santino was doing what he was doing. If he has to strip it away, it's gross. The photo was beautiful, but to execute it he would have had to wrap the white more artistically, wrap it over the skirt as well, make the skirt itself less of an afterthought.

Nobody would wear Daniel's gold top, but it is very couture! I think he had an advantage in that he was making just the top, and not the skirt as well. There's just not enough time to execute 2 pieces.

Chloe's picture had those really interesting windows that were triangles inside rectangles. Too bad she couldn't find a way to work that in - but those pleats are really nice, especially when you consider the time constraint.

What's-his-name from last year had a funny comment about Paris Hilton's boyfriend.

Kara! Way to phone it in!

I love to come here and read your recaps! They are wonderful.
I think santino is the worst designer of the lot, but then he gives good TV face so they keep him. You are so right about his sewing skills as well.

You mean Nick rather than Andrae, right? Well, I can see why he was so upset. From early on, he said that Tarah was his "muse". That may seem kinda contrived, but every garment he's designed so far has really complemented Tarah's figure and looks. He is one of the few designers that creates with the challenge guidelines in mind as well as considering how the garment will look on his model on the runway. I think that's one of the reasons he's done so well.

I listen to Tim Gunn's podcast every week as I'm typing up my recap. This week he talked a bit about how Nick and Tarah had really bonded and created a friendship above and beyond their designer/model relationship. Now I've said before that I'm more interested in the clothes than the clothes rack...but I can certainly see that chnaging the model dynamic this far along in the game can certainly throw someone off. But that being said, I think he managed to pull off something that looked really lovely on Rachael. He also seemed to work with her to give her a sense of what he expected on the runway. Granted, he did fall back on a look that we've seen quite a bit from him in the past but he isn't out and I have my hopes that he'll turn it around for the next challenge.

Oh and I think it's lovely karma that Zulema is out after screwing Nick over. hahahahaha

Yes, I did mean Nick, not Andrae. Thank you! of course, if the model does matter, and if that one is as bad as they was saying she was (gumby legs? ouch!) can Zulema be blamed for switching? Especially since it's clearly an option. Although, it would have been nicer to switch to the one who was going to have to go home anyway.

I just started watching last week, so I didn't know about Zulema's butt dress til they showed it last night!

EnfanTerrible, I agree with you about Zulema. She stayed within the rules and got the model she wanted.

It's OK, though, because now Tarah (who's incredibly beautiful but not the best walker in the history of the world) is available for Daniel.

If Nick wants ner back, he's gonna have to earn it.

By the way, good to see you here, takin' a break from SO!

The model, Tarah, that Zulema switched over to her is going to end up being eliminated. She is a good model but circumstances have conspired against her. Daniel's model Rebecca is the best of the lot of models. Therefore, Daniel will not switch when given the option at the beginning of the next show. So, unfortunately, Tarah, who was with Nick originally is
going to be bumped off the show through no fault of her own.

5. "RE: Project Runway: Inspiration Challenge Recap"
The opening shot of Andrae in your recap says it all. He cracks me up to no end.

Well, Tim Gunn light a bit of a fire under some of the designers' butts & there were some better designs this week. It was a tough call for the win between Daniel & Andrae -- I prefer Andrae's dress & would buy it in a minute -- absolutely gorgeous; but I was really impressed by Daniel's design & thought he did a great job translating his orchid to fashion.

I am overjoyed that the b-tch Zulema is out. I haven't been impressed with anything she has done. Bravo got the drama out of her & I'm glad they cut her shortly thereafter.

In reality, though, I thought it was a tossup between Kara, Zulema & Santino. Kara has been boring & unoriginal the entire season and really shouldn't have made it this far, IMO. Santino's dress was HIDEOUS this week. I thought his dress looked "unfinished." It looked like it was basted & pinned together. I just really hated it.

Then there's Jay McCarroll. Holy High Horse he's riding! I was one of the few people last season who wasn't a big Jay fan -- his bitchy comments were fun, but I wasn't a fan of his work (with ONE exception and that was the dress they showed last night that he created during the Banana Rep. ep that was inspired by the Chrysler building. That was the only thing I liked that he did.) It was expected that he would bring his 'tude to his judging. I was surprised the way he cut down poor Chloe -- don't tell ME, I lived it.

Am I the only one or does anyone else believe these designers are really disappointing compared to first season?? I expected MORE creativity the second time around. They really need to step it up.

Kind Creation of ARNutz

7. "RE: Project Runway: Inspiration Challenge Recap"
I really didn't watch the first season until the end so I can't really do too much comparing, but I can say I was hoping for more creativity. The designers have been good but I'm just waiting for them to go a bit more outside the box, take risks, as long as it doesn't turn out like a completely Santino effect outfit.

In my opinion I really feel that Andrae should have won. Not only did he do such an excellent job with the originality of his inspiration and executing it perfectly but he also made something that many would wear. I thought that Daniel did a good job as well but I just really can't see someone wearing that. These two guys definately deserved the top two. I also think that these two have definately stepped up. At the beginning they did well, enough to have the points to qualify them for the next round but nothing to give their garments the spotlight or to even be seen as a threat. These two have grown over the weeks and it wouldn't surprise me to see them get better and better and make it to the final 3.

As for Chloe, well she has been very consistant in this competition. She puts herself and style into the garments she makes and she does good clean work. I wasn't crazy about her outfit last night, I would have liked to see more. I think that if she wants to stay in the game then she does need to take more risk like Tim advised.

Nick had a great top, but I think his outfit would have been better if he had made his skirt knee length and maybe put in silver trim on the bottom, a subtle amount. I think it would have made the outfit look more classy.

And Santino, wow, I think he could have done more with his outfit. I didn't like the top or the waist. I am starting to like Santino more as far as his attitude, he seems to be more humble and I love his Tim voice so funny. I'm glad that Santino is thinking about what the judges have said about not over doing it but I think he has overthought it and now he has no middle ground. I think he will be the next to go if not after Kara.

Kara, all I can say is boring. The outfits she have made are not original, not great, not high fashion. She depends too much on others and poor Nick is sick of playing teacher to her, she just needs to go. I think the only reason why she made it this far is because of the group and partner challenges.

Zulema never made anything that made me say wow or I would buy that. Her dress could have been better if she had done more with the top and it was a more clean finish. I'm not sad to see her go.

As for the whole model switching, well sometimes a model has to sell an outfit and I can understand her wanting to switch up, but at the same time I'm so on the fence because I just don't see this type of competition a need for being a bit cut throat. Either way it didn't hurt Nick all that much and I'm glad he didn't give up. I am also really loving Daniel, he is such a great guy. He could have let Nick dwell and quit but no he encouraged him to stay and pull through it all even though the guy is his competition. Daniel has proven himself to be a very kind and caring individual.

TJ, thank you so much for putting these recaps together. I didn't begin watching PR until the end of last season, sat down one afternoon and watched a marathon of the episodes leading up to the final elimination. I'm hooked!

I lvoe, lvoe, lvoe Nick and Daniel V. Nick's confessionals are hilarious, and Daniel's designs are so classic. Andrae's dress this week was lovely, too.

What is up with the white on Santino's dress? It looked as though the model was t-p'd on her way to the runway. When I first saw the dress, I knew I'd seen it before. Jay's right -- it was practically the very same dress that Austin Scarlett created last season for the Grammys! If I were better at screen caps, I would post them both to compare.

I am sensing a rehabilitation edit for Santino, though. After all these years with Mark Burnett, I understand they have a story to tell, but please don't tell me they are giving him a winner's edit now. His fashions are down right fugly, and his last two designs have shown his technical merits are not up to snuff.

I wanted to reach through the television and smack Jay in the face. He is so, so, so full of himself. Give me a break, big guy. It's not like you're the second coming of Tom Ford or anything. Jeez.

I enjoyed Jay last season for his funny comments that he could always give. I think Santino is kind of the same this season, doing his Tim Gunn impersonation all the time and offereing up a couple of nasty comments here and there. But goodness! Jay was totally snooty as a judge, and why? Good grief, it's not he's really doing a lot right now . . .or did I miss the last red carpet walker who said they were wearing a Jay Carroll original?

Loved the challenge, really allowed the designers to be themselves. I thought Santino's was the absolute worst, ugly, badly put together, horrible proportions that made his model look frumpy!! But, I bet Zulema is wishing they ran this season's like last season's where the winner of the challenge was exempt from being sent home at the end of the next challenge, since she did win the ice skating challenge.

I bet Cara is the next to go. Hers was so silly.

I agree with lots of things

Most notably, and disappointingly, is how much worse the designers are this season. I truly believe evil Wendy would be the winner if she were on this season. These folks aren't bad, but there are only two I really think are good.

Those two are Nick and Chloe. I think Chloe is the overall best and may very well win. The third finalist is up for grabs.

Kara probably won't be eliminated next. I expect Andrae to be next out, especially since he didn't get the win he super totally deserved last night. Then in two weeks, auf weidersein to Kara. Leaving a suspenseful showdown between Santino and Daniel for the 3rd spot.

I also wonder why Nick didn't get to choose which model he wanted after Zuleema (who should have been booted with her assless dress but did make a killer skating outfit) took Tarah.

I like Dan. I just thought Andrae was better last night. Overall, Dan is way better.

I prefer Dan in Final 3 because he maybe could win, as opposed to Santino, who would be in the Final 3 but wouldn't really be a serious contender to win.

My hunch (not based on talent only) is that the final 3 will be Chloe, Nick and Santino, a mirror of last year with a 3rd place villain, a second place finisher who has been solid all along, and the winner being a solid, but not frequent challenge winner, who is the most creative.

Dan is also creative and seems like a good showdown vs. Chloe. But I don't think Santino will be out before final 3, so Dan sort of has to edge out Nick, which will be very difficult.

And Like I said, bye Andrae, you are next then Kara.

I was thrilled for Andre' this week and the creation he pulled off. He has come a long, long way since his initial melt down on the runway. It was sad that he didnt become the winner of the challenge because, like most of you, I agree he was way out in the front. He and Daniel are my favorites and I would like to see Chloe go to the end with them.

I would absolutly love to see a scene next week of Micheal Khors tossing all of Santino's clothes, sewing equipment and fabric out the window onto the street. I cannot stand how disrespectful Santino is to the judges- especially the ones who have already made it in the fashion industry.

Did anyone else notice that Zulima said in her goodbye address that she was definetly good enough for the final three. Yet, in this type of setting one mistake will take you out of the running. (excuse me but did she not listen to Nina. I think it was more than one mistake)

I did not watch project runway last year so I would like someone to catch me up on this "Jay" guy. Is he really talented?

I usually like at least some part of Santino's design, but the only thing I liked this week was the fabric. It was beautiful and he could have done so much more with it.

His impresson of Tim is so perfect. If you haven't seen the vidoes on bravo yet, you need to watch. Santio does an impression of Tim doing Nine Inch Nail's Closer. Daniel is almost on the floor laughing.

It is VERY hard to stay away from this forum til I get a chance to see the episode!

I saw the last half hour last night.

I wanted Andre the Giant Basketcase to win. I lvoed that dress. I see what they admired in Daniel's dress, too, but I think it made the model's shoulders look odd. And if a model looks like that in it, no real mortal woman is going to look okay in it.

I still lvoe Jay and I don't care if he was snippy. It's fashion! I thought his comments were right on the money; in fact, I actually said "Austin Scarlett's dress!" when Santino's model came down the runway.

Glad to see Zulema go although I thought perhaps Kara should be cut because her dress was *so incredibly boring.* I mean, I could buy that dress at Ross and then iron on the crosswalk thingee.

I'll have to watch from the start to catch the model-switch drama but my feeling is, if you buck the rules, you're toast. Unless Z. was going to come up with something fabulous, her elimination was inevitable.

Soooooooooooo....guessing Ms. Janxz goes next, and then it gets tricky as we narrow down to final four. Chloe's a lock as the only female with potential left. Who goes first -- Andre? Nick? Daniel? Santino?

I was surprised at how snarky Jay was. I would have thought he might have had more sympathy for the contestants since he had been one. And, lets face it, he's not that far removed from any one of them. He may have won last year, but he still has to prove himself, and he certainly isn't an established designer who has the credentials to back up his snark.

Really? I would never have thought that Jay needed encouragement to snark.

Speaking of snarking, did you see him on Kathy Griffin's show where she was asking him for fashion advice? He seemed pretty rude and he told one of her assistants to STFU.

I saw Jay on Kathy's show, Tahj, and he WAS a little b!tch. I was somewhat surprised at his attitude. I knew he was a "behind-your-back-cutting-you-down" kinda person from watching the first season of PR (his comments were really funny & REALLY b!tchy).

But my impression is that Jay is on a total power/ego trip and needs to come back to reality before people just say, FU2, Jay, you're designs aren't THAT great.

She was all pissed off at him, too -- possibly because he told her not to wear a certain colour, and that happened to be the colour of her dress.

I thought it was kind of funny that Jay told her(Kathy Griffin) not to wear green, that people always put redheads in green, and that was the color she ended up in.

by the way, she's toatlly been fropped from all the E! red carpet, as has Starr Jones-Renolds whatever her name is.

I thought that the outfit based on an orchid was okay. However, what was funnier to me was how Micheal Kors kept saying that it was so original to use flowers as an inspirational starting point, and the orchids were so beautiful and how nice it was to finally see somebody use something beautiful. Blah, Blah, Blah.

Was I the only one who thought that was really funny? Come on Micheal, there is nothing used more than flowers to symbolize beauty and elegance. I think he just was high on them because they came from his office!!

Thanks so much for the pics in the recap. Just so everyone can sleep tonight, my opinions are as follows:

1. Daniel - His creation was inspired and lovely. The blouse was so much to look at, what with changing the silhouette (and who else wondered how it maintained its shape on the runway?), that I'm glad the skirt was a simple "stem". He is one of my final 3 picks. And his model, Rebecca, is one of my 2 favorites. She can work anything.
2. Zulema - I think she made the same mistake that Nick did and chose a piece of fabric for her inspiration piece. It wasn't enough of a step outside the proverbial box. She also had the attitude that she could just throw something together, and that might have worked in past challenges, but not this one. She was warned by Tim, and she didn't listen. I wonder if she designed the dress she wears in the show's intro. If so, she should have done something along those lines.
3. Santino - I hated his dress. Agree with statement about toilet paper. It's so high-waisted, just like granny panties. The fabric, a repeat of Ms. Scarlett's, could have been used to greater advantage.
4. Nick - I liked the top, but the bottom looked unfinished. I also didn't care for his inspiration photo (see Zulema comments). Also, bringing Paris Hilton into any conversation is just a bad idea. Too bad he was so bummed, but I was glad to see his lump of a model pull it off. She finally threw her shoulders back, worked her chest, and made her legs look as slinky and sexy as possible. I hope she continues to improve. Another one of my final 3 picks.
5. Kara - What to say that hasn't already been said? Blah. Too literal. Silhouette was too simple. I hope she goes next.
6. Chloe - I loved the pleating on this dress. It has a very nice shape, but I feel just pulling the ribbons around the waist makes it look a bit unfinished. Grace, her model, is nearly perfect and ranks with Rebecca as my favorite. Chloe is my 3rd pick for final 3.
7. Andrae - I agree with Jay that this dress was the most inspired. When you looked at the photo of the gutter water after seeing the dress, you could actually see the beauty in the photo. My only complaint with this dress is the pebble dangling from the right breast. It should have been resewn in a slightly less eye catching spot once the model had tried the dress on.

I had to scroll back up and look at that. You're right. I didn't see that before, but that one pebble does look a little, ahem, odd in that placement.

I totally agree about the beading on Andrae's dress. That one dangler hanging from her nipplage area was distracting.
