"On Thin Ice - Skating costumes"
LAST EDITED ON 01-19-06 AT 00:31 AM (EST)

Our very one Project Runway forum...wooooo hoooo! Thanks so much to the powers that be!

This week the designers are forced to wear cheesy costumes in order to discover the next challenge. According to Tim Gunn’s podcast, they had to wait for production to set up at the ice rink so the Project Runway van went to the parking lot of a nearby prison. So Tim decides to mess with the designers and told them that they were the entertainment for the inmates. After much freaking out, they head over to the ice rink where they meet Sasha Cohen who tells them their next challenge is to create a skating costume for her which she will wear at an exhibition.

With half of the original designers gone, it’s really getting competitive now. Here’s what the designers came up with:

Zulema: Winner

Her concept was “Swan Lake” and it was quite lovely. I loved the pleated skirt and she made excellent use of the trim, especially considering she hadn’t used it before. My only criticism was that I didn’t quite like the cutout look around the belly and the bustline looked a little low.

Santino

Santino should have been out with this travesty. It was a hot mess, to say the least. Unfortunately, he listened to Tim Gunn for once and defended his garment in a way that didn’t say “F**k you” to the judges. It’s so obvious that the only reason he is still in at this point is because the producers want a villain.

Nick

I think this is the first Nick design that I didn’t like. He’s been my favorite up until now. There’s just so much going on here and in fabrics that are somewhat blah. I’m looking forward to seeing his next design because it just seemed a bit off this time.

Kara

The fringe on Kara’s booooring dress nearly did her in. I love how Daniel referred to her dress as simple but not in the Calvin Klein way…in the JCPenney way. Too funny. It seemed like a skating costume you would have seen 20 years ago, not today.

Emmett: Out

I don’t think Emmett deserved to be out with this design. Santino’s design was far far far worse. However, it wasn’t innovative and, like Kara’s design, it looked like every other ice skating costume we’ve seen in the past.

Daniel

Daniel’s design is a bit dark and mature for Sasha although it did look good with his model’s coloring and figure. It didn’t do much for me though and I think it looks a little too reminiscent of his previous designs.

Chloe

Chloe’s dress was very elegant and bling-free. I would have like to see a little more curve in the silhouette though. Especially since she had Grace’s tall thin figure as a model. She probably should have kept Grace’s figure in mind when putting the design together rather than using it as an excuse in front of the judges.

Andrae

I have to admit, I didn’t quite get Andrae’s “Princess Cyclone” design. He wanted a menacing look and while I suppose he achieved that…it just didn’t do it for me.

Handcrafted by RollDdice

Oh and next week looks fun. Looks like Zulema steals Nick's model and last year's winner is a judge. B!tchfest!

Our very one Project Runway forum...wooooo hoooo! Thanks so much to the powers that be!

You know it! How very cool.

I agree on Zulema. With some tailoring, it would/could be stunning.

I agree on Santino. Booo-hissss. He was obviously cast because they wanted a melodramatic evil-guy. Hopefully, the train runs over him. It will happen, but it just want it to happen sooner.

I agree on nick. Not quite sure what he was envisioning. Luckily it wasn't Final 5 or so.

I also agree on Kara. I've seen her dress on skaters back when IceCapades was big. For the yungun's, that's like the 1970's.

Poor misunderstood Emmett. All lurch-like in composure. It was funny seeing the pink stretchy number he had to wear during the episode. It really brought out his bitter-queen side.
Oh and the dress? Ummm...Skating Outfit?
My great grandma hasn't seen an outfit like that since the EyceKapaides was big. For everyone living, that's like the 1870's.

Daniel.
Hmmm...
All I can think of is boring.
However, when I look at the model, I can't help myself from thinking...
SHE.IS.A.MAN.! No. I mean it...look at her hands.

Chloe.
Best dress. Mind you it could still use some tailoring, but frankly, my favorite this week.

Hahaha. Andrae. Hahahhaaaaa.... Ahem, sorry. I just can't help myself. Just thinking about this guy makes me harken back to a tortured-hamster song someone once told me and in the uncomfortness I laugh.
But, Princess Cyclone (Which is what I'll name him), was again sub-par this week. I mean his design was sub-par.
Like on the ParisHiltonian-level. Easily ripped to shreads before filming.
(Side note on PrincessCyclone, he gets marks for fixing the machines, but also gets marks against for being so bitchy afterwards.)

Special prizes

The "Whaasssdat?":
Given to designs that are both unflattering and unmarketable. (Except for DragQueens)
Daniel:

Sorry beak-boy but being benevolent becomes boring. Buck-up boy! Start wowing the judges. And/Or sabotaging other designers.
Show me why you deserve Final3.

The "Fat Chicken":
Designs that can be good in principle but somehow make a normally thin model look fat.
So many to choose from this week.
Most of you would have thought it would be Santinos feathers and fluff extrava-tastrophe, just by name alone.
And truthfully, Santino's number gives the look of micro-fat-rolls on the model. Not a good thing.
Also, PrincessCyclone's black number brought out the worst side of a typically thin girl, it was definitely in the running.
However, it was Zulema's "winning design" that looked, to me, more like the perfect lingerie for a boastful mother-to-be.

Demi's vanityfair cover wasn't anywhere near this rotund.

The "MutualOfOmahummah Wild Kingdom":
Given to the design which proves Evolution.
Oh Boy. I so want to vote for Chloe's fish number. But I guess I have to go with Santino's PhoenixPhuckup for this prize.

I've seen feather (ab)use like this before. But I'm I'm pretty sure that tarring and feathering is illegal now. Or at least out of fashion.

Finally, some shake-ups in the models room. I was beginning to pine for Morganza!

Soooooo happy about PR getting it's own forum!!! Now down to business...lol. As far as I was concerned this episode did not turn out any spectacular outfits. It seemed the designers were really challenged in this paticular area and had a hard time pulling it off. In their defense, it was out of their expertise and the material was hard to work with, never mind the machines giving difficulty, but I still was a bit disappointed with the outcome of the outfits.

As for Santino, well I expected the outfit to be over the top and completely nowhere near what it should have been. I have to credit the guy for his creativity and desire to be different and give people something new instead of something blah and safe. Honestly, if he makes it as a famous designer woman will not be able to go to him and tell him what they want. Either you trust and like his designs or go elsewhere, but I admit I kind of like the rebel I won't conform to please you attitude, especially when he isn't getting all b!tchy with the judges, which was a refreshing part of last night. With that said it seems like Santino gets away with making outragious outfits and anyone else gets the Auf Wiedersan.

Emmette, well honestly I know that his skirting should have been a bit longer, I don't think he intentionally made it "vulgar" if anyone even wants to go along with that. I do think his outfit was too dark, lacked creativity and was boring...same ol same ol. Honestly, I wasn't sad to see him go, I mean he's not a bad or dislikable guy but I do think his design's were dull and I was tired of hearing "I'm so used to designing men's ware". Yes, Yes Emmette we know you only say it like every episode, enough excuses, know your weakness and strenghts and get on with it please!!!!!

Daniel, Andrea and Nick well it wasn't completely horrid or completely great, so they deserved to pass through to the next round just not to be considered the best. I did think Nick's outfit looked better on t.v. I don't know if it was the lighting on stage or my room but it didn't look that bad as it does in that pic.

Kara's outfit wasn't horrible, the fringe came off as sloppy and the outfit was a non original creation, I think if she jazzed it up a bit she could have had potential.

Chloe's dress was a pretty color, but honestly I agree with her on it looking like a Christmas tree. No shape at all, she should have spent more time thinking on shaping with that type of design. Maybe if it was going to be worn during a Christmas special then it would have been good.

Zulema's outfit was pretty, but I honestly thought the judges were going to think it was too revealing. That's what I didn't get last night, Emmette's outfit was vulgar and Zulema who exposed more was the winner. I think the bust was a little low but other than that she really did do a good job and captured the concept of the challenge at hand and gave it her own twist. She worked it out.

Overall, the turn out for this episodes outfits was my least favorite, but I did enjoy seeing them all have fun and goof off wearing their skating outfits and trying to skate. Santino became a little more likable with last night's episode and cracked jokes and just had fun.

<I admit I kind of like the rebel

Rebels are ok. They have carefully considered the issues and taken a stand.

Jerks are not ok. They are all about themselves and use no criteria other than, "I am different." Booooooooooring.

I classify Santino as the latter.

4. "RE: On Thin Ice - Skating costumes"
I again was UNDERWHELMED last night. I had such high expectations & my faves disppointed me once again.

Unlike everyone else, I really didn't like Chloe's design & couldn't see it on the ice. I don't think it would have been flattering on Sasha at all. It was a nice party dress, though.

I was also shocked that Zulema (Queen Ice) won. But it was the better of the so-so designs. I think the bust of the costume would have to be modified a bit, because I would think as soon as one MOVED (raises arms) we would have some nip.

I was VERY disappointed in Andrae & surprised he wasn't one of the lower scorers.

Santino was Santino. I knew it would be over-the-top. I really thought he should have been out, for consistently creating some bad designs (Lingerie, Banana Rep) & for his F-U attitude to the judges. But Santino makes good tv (a la Wendy) & is unpredictable, so he'll be F3.

I didn't think Emmitt should have been out over Kara this week. Yes the design wasn't very innovative, but I actually thought it was really pretty & dramatic. The fabrics & trim he used really caught the light & sparkled like a million twinkling stars. I'll bet it would look great on the darkened ice with the lights. I thought Emmitt's looked better & more flattering than Daniel's & Andrae's, as well.

Next week looks like a good one. Queen Zulema makes the models do a walk-off. Every week they tease us with a possible serious fight among the designers. Hopefully next week will be it. Also, looks like our Jay is on his throne & power trip in judging next week. I can't wait!!!

Kind Creation of ARNutz

I too can't wait to see what Jay has to say. I honestly didn't get his designs, he definately wasn't my favorite. He almost reminds me of Santino, a little over the top, the only exception is he doesn't go mad with adding a bunch of stuff. He did look like he was enjoying himself being on the other end of the spectrum, maybe just a bit too much.

As for Nick's comments, at least I think they were directed towards Zulema who knows with editing, it looks like it may get catty between him and Zulema. I love Nick I hope he really works it with the next episode and wins, I just don't think I could stand it if he was to get the Auf Wiedersan, it would be terrible.

I agree the outfits this week were underwhelming, nothing really screamed wow to me. Zulema did have the best design, it was very much an ice-skater's outfit and it was creative, I'm just surprised the judges didn't think it was too little of an outfit if you know what I mean, especially considering how harsh they were towards Emmette's itty bitty skirt.

I would have agreed with the judges and got rid of Emmett. His was very boring and old fashioned.

I think most were kind of bland and the ones that stood out as being different were Zulema, Chloe and Santino.

I like Zulema's outfit, but can't see it on a larger busted woman. Also the opening comes down very low in the front. You would have to have the outfit glued onto you so it wouldn't move.

I didn't like Chloe's. It reminded me of a Christmas tree. Maybe it would have looked better on someone that didn't look like they just escape from a slave labor camp.

I normally like Santino's designs. Well, except for the lingerie. I think his would have been good if it was all in one color and didn't have 100 pounds of embellishments. In the preview for next week even he called it ridiculous and horrible and swears he won't go over the top next week. We'll see if he sticks to that. He did learn to keep his mouth shut on the runway.

I don't think Santino is only around because he sometimes comes off as an ahole. He has talent. If they are keeping him around for another reason, I would think it is more because his designs do create a stir. Maybe it's just me, but this week and last week it seemed the camera's didn't show his design anywhere near as much as the others before the runway. It was like they didn't want to ruin the reveal.

It figures Zulema would be the one to cause the stir by switching up the models. I wonder how long she has been waiting for the chance to switch. In the preview all the models come out, but she says she wants a walkoff between 3 models. I guess she picks one of them. There is going to be drama if she picks someone else's model. Everyone gets to pick a new model, right? Can someone else pick Zulema's model or is she automatically out?

Actually Elaine, the opening is fake. It actually has a high collar, and then flesh-colored spandex all the way down the front and on the tummy. When I first started my sewing business I was doing costumes, and it is SUCH a hoot because even larger people like me can get away with looking strapless.

OK, I can see what you mean, if it shifts there will be a lot of nipple. As it is, you can see cleavage and also her navel. I wonder if Sasha wants to show that much? I hope the final version doesn't have that little mistake in the front, in the gathers right at the center. I bet that bothers Sulema, but she proabably didn't have time to re-do it.

Okay, I finally saw the episode.

I was SHOCKED that so few of our remaining contestants watched skating! How can the legacy of Brian Boitano have been so easily shrugged off by guys who are very comfortable playing with voile?

None of the costumes did much for me. Yeah, Zulema's is pretty, and the best choice for Really I Won't Choke This Time Sacha (who shares her rival Kwan's propensity for screwing the Olympic pooch bigtime, but I digress...) but Swan Lake? Yawn. SO done. And it made the model look like she had a pot belly. Which was probably not the desired effect, and should have been physiologically impossible.

I felt bad to see Emmett go. I felt particularly bad that he had to make his final bow in flamingo pink spandex. It probably gave him a rash. There was no way, given his association with Tim and Parsons, that he could win -- we'd all shriek "Favoritism!" So I knew his days were numbered.

I would have liked to see Sacha wearing some of those, like Chloe's. (Gee, Chloe did teal. Quell Surprise!).

I was disappointed with Emmett so I wasn't sorry to see him go. Heck, the pink spandex made him more exciting than he's been all season. Seriously, he seemed so Stepford that the most exciting thing he's ever done is blink.

He didn't even know who Robert was fa chrissakes.

ETA: I'd finally had it when he used the excuse for the umpteenth time that he's a menswear designer.......

I thought it was funny. Robert was such a joke.
"Er...Mario? Guido? Pauly?"

I guess I liked Emmett more than a lot of people watching. I liked his restraint. He was so out of his usual safe sphere here -- he wasn't flashy or flamboyant or edgy and he was older than a lot of them (okay, I recognize my "root for the ole fart" propensity).

Anyway, something about Emmett made me kind of sad.

I can not WAIT for Jay to judge next week - I really wish we could have him every week, although I'm pretty happy with the judges on this show.

I thought Zulema's neckline & oobie area were horrid. How unflattering. The rest was pretty.

Santino is so odd. Which can be good in a designer, but sometimes he goes a step too far.

Nick's had potential. He should've stuck with the gold fabric that is on the skirt. The tan print fabric is all wrong.

Kara's was ok...too traditional though.

Emmett's was HORRIBLE!!!!! So outdated.

Daniel's was beautiful, but the skirt could've been longer.

Chloe's was so original, yet I could see it on a skater. I'll give points for that.

Andre's was cool, but lose the poofy thing on the shoulder.

My winner: Daniel or Andre
My choice for going home: Santino or Emmett

I do like the ones who dare to go way out there, though. I liked Austin for it last year with all those flouncy flouncy flounces. They make good tv.

Also, I have to say that Santino's ego, while obnoxious, perfectly suits him to the fashion industry. Plus, I think they are editing the hell out of him. He had that whole rumination about getting away from competition and bonding during the group skate ... I wondered how many "softer side of Santino" comments we are not being made privy to, and how many potentially bitchy comments others (Nick can't be THAT sweet all the time) make which we don't get to hear.

But I don't care - the editors of this show did a fine manipulative job last year (remember how we all liked Kira San til the finale? She went from Earth Momma to Beeyotch in 18 minutes flat) and I'm okay with whatever "characters" they want to mold this year.

I stand by my comment. I think he's been "on the brink" quite a few times (1st episode, Nikki Hilton dress) and pulled out a good design, but that's what designers are supposed to do. I think if this weren't such a competition setting, he could settle down and make some nice tame pieces alongside his crazy pieces.

Wow! A whole forum for PR! Thanks to SB and the blue peeps (of whom I've noticed a few more... congrats to them!)

I agree with your comments, tj; glad to see you posting them. A new "staple" thresd is born!

On to the show: my winner was Chloe. Thought hers would look best on the ice, fluttering in the breeze.

My favorite, Nick, finally had a design I didn't like; the two different cuts on the top was not flattering at all. And the color was boring.

Santino (newly named SaintEgo) could have made 3 outfits out of what he had on his final dress and not one of them would have been a winner. He was an early fav of mine, (picked him to be final 3), he's got the attitude for the business, but I agree he's there now to be the bad guy. He's much more likable than Wendy Pepper, but eeewwwwww, his work is a bit too out of control.

Can't wait to see Jay next week!

Did anyone catch the disclaimer, that the winners are chosen by the judges with input from the producers. At least they're honest about it!

Which is why we always know Santino won't go anywhere before the final 4 or 3.

I believe many shows now list that disclaimer after the whole "Last Comic Standing" fiasco.

Yeah, I think I mentioned it in a previous post. As Ginger said, if it weren't for that Santino would be out by now. During the lingerie challenge which he was responsible for not one, but three horrible creations, he berated the judges the entire time.

You can listen to Tim Gunn's podcast from Bravo's Project Runway page and hear all about it. Tim is much more candid on his podcast than he is on the show. It's really fun to listen to and not nearly long enough for me!

So yeah, they're honest about it...but I think it takes away from the show. I want Santino out and I want him out now.

Me too. If this were a real competition instead of a tv show, SaintEgo would have been long gone.

Everyone is entitled to my opinion.

Just wondering if anyone knows if the winning costume has been worn yet? It would be pretty cool if Sasha wore it for an Olympic competition! Do you think that might happen?

Very doubtful that she will wear it at the Olypmics. On the show, they stated she would wear the costume for an exhibition, not a competition. Maybe we'll find out more about it during the reunion show?

If she wins a medal which would get her in the Gala "we just let them have fun" thing they do at the end of the competition, we might see it then.

I assumed the exhibition would be one of the post-competition attached gala events.
