"SO for men??" |
I am probably one of a handful of men nationwide that watch SO regularly and like it for what it is and how it helps people. I am also straight! I was a sociology/psychology major in college. What does anyone think of a SO house for Men?? Is that even possible??

I'd like to see men in the SO house. It would be interesting to see how they communicate and handle the exercises (vs. the women). I find gender differences fascinating.

It would be an interesting format, the current one has played out. Remember the group therapy that Billy from Allie McBeal went to.

I doubt many men would watch it...I really enjoyed the couples boot camp episodes that ran, more than I thought I would. But as far as an SO house for men, I doubt it would work (unless only women are watching)...my boyfriend cannot stand SO! If I'm watching it on tape and he comes into the room, I actually have to stop the tape or he'll immediately start berating the characters to me, saying how it is the stupidest show ever! And he's usually not that closed-minded, but something about *feelings* irritates him, I guess. ;-P I would probably watch an SO for men show, though.

I think the idea for SOH was to use take off on the way that women socialize and support each other in groups by sharing their issues, ups, and downs in life. Iyanla and others tried to form a sisterhood and even if it doesn't work while everyone is in the house, encourages the women to create some archetypal female groups after they leave. (finding wise-women mentors, and a growing sisterhood of friends, for example).Men definitely bond in groups but the parallel isn't that they get together to dissect, examine, share, and heal each others relationships, families, and hurts. The male generalization is that it's more a bonding by just being in each others presence and accepting each other as you are. I know men in conflict have an entirely different dynamic than women. I just can't even think of how much rework/rethinkng the show would take to really be designed to help men with their issues. (Oh, my, I just flashed on graduation ceremonies and Andy Paige makeovers with too much mascara. *must remove mental image*) Now that people have seen Starting Over, I'm sure there are men who want to work on their issues and would be happy to come into the house and work with (perhaps male) LCs to challenge them to grow and change. I think the aspect of having endless opportunities to chat and feeling safe and isolated might not be as essential but it always helps to get away from a situation to deal with ones own issues. I think it could work. I think any stay at home people watching the show now would watch men on the show. (especially if they were hawt. just kidding. )

I would definately watch SO for men! It would probably be more interesting. It might help me understand my husband better. He happened to get a glimpse of SO recently on a day off from work and he thought the idea of the show was great. I was surprised. It thought he was going to say something like, "Oh, please!"
