PLEASE NOTE: The Reality TV World Message Boards are filled with desperate
attention-seekers pretending to be one big happy PG/PG13-rated family. Don't
be fooled. Trying to get everyone to agree with you is like herding cats,
but intolerance for other viewpoints is NOT welcome and respect for other
posters IS required at all times. Jump in and play, and you'll soon find out
how easy it is to fit in, but save your drama for your mama. All members are

Ebert once said, "If you disagree with something I write, tell me so, argue
with me, correct me--but don't tell me to shut up. That's not the American way."

LAST EDITED ON 08-03-05 AT 04:39 PM (EST)Marty almost seems to be trying TOO hard. I'm starting to feel the same way about JD. I totally give Marty props for evolving & every week improving. However, I just can't root for him to front INXS. I'd totally vote for him in a nice-guy competition, though. As for the editing, I'll be really curious if it helps save Jessica this week. If she's saved from the bottom three, I think it could be the combination of two decent performances (Elegantly Wasted last week & Blister in the Sun this week) and the pity party MB is helping throw her. If she isn't in the bottom three, I think you are right, the way Marty is being edited could help him stick around til at least the final three. However, I think fans are taking this pretty seriously and aren't letting the editing influence them too much. JMHO. ETA: I've figured it out! Marty reminds me of the kid that used to get picked on for being a geek, but then at the school talent show he showed he coud rock. Then the cheerleaders & football stars gave him a pat on the back & said "that's cool, man." Kind of like a Garth Algar from Wayne's World.

>I think the whole Jessica thing >is that the only female >with any potential to actually >front the band is Jordis, >but they can't appear to >have so wide a gender >gap in the final eight >or so. In other >words, I think at least >one inferior gal will beat >out a more deserving guy >because they don't want to >appear like the girls don't >have a chance. >My first reaction was "No, there's no affirmative action in Rock & Roll." Then, I remembered this is primarily a reality television show, so yeah, I can see them doing some affirmative action-action! But I hope they don't, because that would suck and be unfair. >Marty is awfully nice. Not >a good thing in a >rock front man. I disagree. For one thing, Marty is already a rock front man, with his successful Chicago area band, The Lovehammers. Secondly, there are lots of "nice" front men--nice doesn't have to mean James Taylor or Alan Alda (not rock, but the iconic Nice Guy.) Must I start a list? How about: David Bowie (maybe not technically considered a front man), Bono, Eddie Vedder, Chris Martin, Paul McCartney, Chris Robinson (seems nice, but still has that scruffy bad-boy thing) and how about Mick Jagger? Is he considered nice? Maybe not in his heyday, but now I think so. What does "nice" mean, anyway? Kind, thoughtful, non-confrontational? Or something else? Your thoughts?

LAST EDITED ON 08-03-05 AT 05:49 PM (EST)Agreed there can be nice guy front men (I don't mind em, I just think it may undercut Marty's chances a little), but a lot of the guys you listed weren't exactly "nice" types when they first hit it big. Eddie Vedder was grungy and moody and wonderfully disgruntled at first. Very anti-MTV and sometimes came off aloof or surley because of it. Of course, that's why we like Eddie. Mick Jagger and the Stones were considered The Bad Boys of Rock. They were the Anti-Beatles. They wanted your hubcaps and your virgin daughters. They rocked back then (approx. 1918). McCartney's niceness made him the lamer-than-John Beatle. He still gets awfully damned sweet, with all of those songs about dogs, for my tastes (but note that my second concert ever was the newly-formed Wings). (approx. 1921). Bono was scrappy and rough and all IRA up in your grill. Bowie? He was really a nice GAL when he first arrived. Or at least, he wanted to disorient you with the genderbend. I think it helps to have a little edge, a little menace. But I still like Marty. All just MHO.
Chris Martin? Yep. He's nice. Really, really nice. Squeaky clean and Nice Nice Nice. That may be why his music bores me to tears. But I recognize I'm in the minority here.

Hi KC, that ending wouldn't surprise me much either. I just don't think J.D.'s attention getting is going to turn out to be a bad thing. Guys who front rock bands have to create a stir, seems like they have to make girls scream, and the bad boy type is almost expected for a band.

Yep, I couldn't argue with that premise at all. I think you are spot on. And I couldn't agree with you more about Jordis. Even if INXS doesn't want her as a lead, her career HAS to go places after this. She may not have the audience American Idol has, but she has more of a fan base going in than most unknowns, and I think she will have even more by the time it gets to the end of the show.

One thing about Jordis... assuming she doesn't win this--and I hate to sound cruel--I hope she doesn't stay with her current band. I listened to their stuff and it kinda sucks. She's a great singer when singing great songs. I wasn't as impressed with her singing lame songs.
