"Lyrics: D.C. vs. W.Y.N."
LAST EDITED ON 09-21-05 AT 07:12 PM (EST)

Last night, as I heard Marty sing "Don't change for you/Don't change a thing for me" and JD sing "I'll give you what you need, " I wondered if the lyrics were significant more than those lines, since not all lyrics are enunciated well. So, I looked at my cds & found interesting results. Seeing it all written down makes it even more clear. Here ya go.

DON'T CHANGE

I'M STANDING HERE ON THE GROUND
THE SKY ABOVE WON'T FALL DOWN
SEE NO EVIL IN ALL DIRECTIONS
RESOLUTION OF HAPPINESS
THINGS HAVE BEEN DARK
FOR TOO LONG

DON'T CHANGE FOR YOU
DON'T CHANGE A THING FOR ME

I FOUND A LOVE I HAD LOST
IT WAS GONE FOR TOO LONG
HEAR NO EVIL IN ALL DIRECTIONS
EXECUTION OF BITTERNESS
MESSAGE RECEIVED LOUD AND CLEAR

Then the first verse repeats, then the chorus.

Nice, eh? They couldn't have picked a more appropriate song for Marty to sing last night. BTW, if you don't have this album, Shabooh Shoobah, from 1982, please do yourself a huge favor and go get it. Now. I like or love every song on it, and I think it's their best one.

WHAT YOU NEED

HEY, HERE IS THE STORY
FORGET ABOUT YOUR TROUBLE IN LIFE
DON'T YOU KNOW IT'S NOT EASY
WHEN YOU GOTTA WALK UPON THAT LINE

THAT'S WHY--YOU NEED
THAT'S WHY--THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED
I'LL GIVE YOU WHAT YOU NEED

DON'T YOU GET SAD AND LONELY
YOU NEED A CHANGE FROM
WHAT YOU DO ALL DAY
AINT NO SENSE IN ALL YOUR CRYING
JUST PICK IT UP AND THROW IT INTO SHAPE

HEY YOU WON'T YOU LISTEN
THIS IS NOT THE END OF IT ALL
DON'T YOU SEE THERE IS A RHYTHM
I'LL TAKE YOU WHERE YOU
REALLY NEED TO BE

This one was not as perfect a lyrical fit as Marty's song, but it was still a good choice for JD. The selection of both these songs illustrate the theory that it was decided before the show last night. (This is from Listen Like Thieves, 1985)

I thought that, too, last night. It seemed like JD was singing sing TO Garry "I'll take you where you really need to be..."

Well, yeah, I think they decided before last night. In a chat from the 14th-ish, one of them said they had "pretty much" decided. It only makes sense - could they really be THAT undecided?

On the song choice - Marty has said more than once that "Don't Change" is his favorite and he did it fabulously on the show. I think they were setting him up to do his best.

Thanks for printing all those lyrics!

I agree. They had already picked J.D. so let Marty do a song that he likes, knows, and will excel at. No reason to make him crash and burn. I think both of the final INXS songs were softballs.

But that's not really that important. Both of these singers came out winners in the end. JD got the gig and Marty got exposure and a spot on the tour.
