"Does JD owe some royalties on Pretty Vegas?" |
O.K., this has been bugging me since the first time I heard JD launch into his "original" song. I thought he was singing some old classic that was nagging at my memory, but I lost it on the chorus. I played back the song yesterday, and it came to me: Don't the opening bars sound amazingly like the old Animals hit "We Gotta Get Outta This Place"? I need some other old codger out there who remembers it to confirm it. Not EXACTLY the same mind you, but court cases have been settled for less. Don't be surprised if Eric Burdon rears his pointy little head! (Is he still alive?)

Now I'm even more suspicious- I figured JD was too young to have that in his memory banks, but since INXS are coots like us, maybe they are doing subconcious rewrites! (and I checked- Eric Burdon is alive, kicking, recording and touring. He's clear across the country in Florida this month, but I'd go see him if he ever came here to Vegas!) And thank you for your support!

LAST EDITED ON 09-18-05 AT 09:06 PM (EST)"Did they write the music for any of the other contestants?" Actually they did. Maybe you missed the songwriting clinic episode? INXS laid down a track and the contestants were put into two groups to put lyrics and a melody. I've always been surprised that no one took the opportunity during the orignal song weeks, to use the INXS music. JD, Marty, Jordis (and the irrelevant Jessica) were in one group. Depending on your point of view, JD either was tricked into leaving to write lyrics so Marty & Jordis could collaborate on their own, rejected his ideas and he stuck to his artistic guns and said he didn't want his name on that song. OR he was a trouble-maker and difficult and left in a childish huff and made his team lose. Bottom line, INXS/Dave was curious about his song, he sang it and they said it was the best song but the contest was on team building, so "best song" is irrelevant. "Pretty Vegas" is that song. I figured you'd like the "bad boy!" Here's another take on that episode from Stephen Perkins (drummer for Jane's Addiction, Porno for Pyros, Banyan and now The Panic Channel.)
I was surprised to see the songwriting clinic on the reality segment of RSI the other night. The format is what got me most. Why? Let me explain. First, how often do a group of singers get together to write a song? Let me answer that for you… Close to never. It’s a band thing. Or, if the artist chooses, it’s a solo thing. The band songwriting process typically goes like this… The creative functions come together (drums, bass, guitar, etc.) and collaboration ensues. It’s not easy. Although it can be if the vibe is right. Sometimes, on the other hand, the process is muddled in ego and can be quite hard on the people involved. I’ve seen some sessions blow up. It’s not fun. But, that is rock. The RSI format was nothing like I have ever seen before. Put a bunch of singers in a room and let them go wild on a pre-sequenced mix???? I would have rather seen an individual competition that showcased the highlights and lowlights of the remaining singers. That would be enlightening and much better given the requirements of this gig. Okay. With that out of the way, here are some thoughts on the songs that were delivered: ** Stop Go: Quite the love-fest putting that track together, huh? Ty took lead and really got into it, didn’t he? That was cool. You can’t fault him for that. That track, however, didn’t turn my key. I felt the song to be a little uncomfortable and peppy. Too many harmonies. Not very INXS to say the least. ** Jordis’ Track – Didn’t anybody catch the name of this diddy? I didn’t. I don’t really care. The song was ‘Eh… Okay.’ Not going to spend much time on it. It just was. Then, we got what we always like in tv land… Drama. And, drama is spelled JAY DEE on Rock Star: INXS. This guy is amazing. Seriously. He just has to do his own thing. On one hand, it is everything you like in a rocker – rebellion, angst, that free-spirit, that ‘I don’t give a #####’ attitude. Alternatively, you gotta wonder when this strategy might backfire on Mr. Fortune. I mean, INXS has been rocking for many years. They’ve sold 30 million cds. Are they looking for a loose cannon? A maverick? A leader? Or, are they looking for a spoke to fit a new wheel that is INXS without Michael Hutchence. Do you remember how smooth, sleek and magnetic Michael was? I do. That cat was like the James Bond of rock. So alive. So controlled. So thoughtful. So present. Does JD think he’s striking that chord with the public? I don’t think so… And, I think we saw the first sign of that when he dropped into the Bottom Three last week. Still, though… JD has got some balls. And, I respect him for that. http://www.#####.com/rockstar/celeb_blog_050816.php

Well you know since reading this topic I have done alot of research and you just might have a point here. There is a real simularity to the two songs. Yes the orignal song which was sung by The Animals in the early 60's is a very old style and JD Fortune's song Pretty Vegas song which is differnt word wise, but the tune is very much simlar. I have downloaded the video of one episode where JD sings the song using his rhinestone cover Mega phone and then listen to the song "we gotta get outta this Place" from Itunes. And yes there is a simularity to the tone.HMMMMMMM!!!!!! I am dumbfounded by this. I wonder if INXS know this to be the case?

Alot of songs are similar in one way or another, whether it be words, or chorus, etc.... BUT it is still different never-the-less. And if it was too, too similar, all they would have to do is ask permission and pay some royalities and they can use it. (my husbands band does it all the time). Everything we do, has to be checked by our Music Lawyer first, (so we don't get sued). "I'm sure INXS is very aware" they probably have a team of laywers. I never listened to the Animals anyhow, so I wouldn't care or even know, if it was similar, to begin with. I heard Pretty Vegas on the radio today, on our local radio station - already ! Catchy tune !! I am happy for JD, I hope he has a great career.
