"So who gets the damn restaurant?"
After all this build-up about the winner getting their own restaurant, Michael goes and gives it up to go work for Gordo in London.

And what is with making the guy make a huge decision (like moving to another country) without even giving time to consult with his wife??

For an aspiring chef, would the promise of working directly under Gordo have been a big enough prize in and of itself?

I guess FOX is off the hook now for actually giving anyone their own restaurant.

Good question!

I'm thinking that Fox never intended to really hand over the restaurant. This apprenticeship was the real prize from the start, even the contestants didn't know it.

I didn't think Michael looked very surprised when Ramsey made his offer, so I think he knew in advance that if he won, that offer was out there.

So many questions, did anyone see a post-finale interview w/ Michael? I did hear anything else.

Actually, the presitige of training under Ramsey is huge. A whole lot more will be open to him. And what a great time to move to London: young with no kids.

I think you are bang on. Opening a restaurant is a risky business at best - most fail early on. However, to apprentice under Ramsey will definitely add to his cache - increasing the liklihood of success when he does eventually open a restaurant.

Let's see...you're 27 and want to make it big-time as a chef. Which is the better option?

- Start yet another restaurant in LA and face the fact that the failure rate for new restaurants is extremely high. Then, you're in your 30s trying to get people to invest in you, and when you tell them you won Hell's Kitchen, they get a blank look on their face and ask "what's that?"

- Go train in Europe for a few years and have the opportunity to make contacts and learn without risking your reputation on one shot. Then, you're in your 30s trying to get people to invest in you, and you have years of solid training to promote yourself, as well as knowing people who know people who could help you stand out instead of being just another person groveling in front of a bored loan officer.

Easy call.

So why didn't FOX promote the show as "the winner will move to London and work as Gordon Ramsey's apprentice"?.

What if Elsie had won? Would she have been offered the apprenticeship? How easy would that have been for her, as a mother of six? Or was the fix in anyway for Michael and Ralph at the end?

5. "RE: So who gets the damn restaurant?"
I honestly think that if Elsie had won that she could have chosen the restaraunt. As other posters said, most new places fail quickly so if any aspiring chef were to choose their own place as opposed to training under Ramsay, they are nuts.

Nowadays, all "game" shows are under such scrutiny with rules and such. If FOX hadn't intended on giving the winner their own place, they would not have been able to state that as a prize.

I know many people like to think that these shows can do what they want and promise things they don't intend on delivering, but when it comes to promoting something on TV or the Radio, people have to be really careful not to promise something they can't give...

Remeber Richard Branson's quest for the best?

"The winner will get Branson's old job, becoming the president of the entire Virgin Corporation!"

Didn't exactly happen like that in the end.

Well I'm posting on a Hells kitchen thread, did anyone notice that in the opening Ramsey looks at every contestent but the first one eliminated and the winner. neat pointless trivia.

Wow! I never noticed that! Now I want to watch the opening again and see it for myself! (Of course I didn't keep any old episodes though.) I'm really surprised a few of the posters on here didn't catch on before.

I think the real question is what was the prize of your own resturant?
Would you own the building it was in? How much money would they give you for construction? How much money to hire a staff? How long would they support you?

11. "Speaking of waste"
Which will make Michael more famous - winning this contest and all the attendant media attention (and therefore more business) or studying under Ramsey in Europe to become a better chef.

Personally I would have totally taken the restaurant. Not only is it a prize of very high monetary value (probably upwards of $1M fully loaded in LA), he also would have an automatic shot at lots of free press and 'novelty' diners. If he is actually able to prove himself and the restuarant is GOOD he will make it through the crucial first 12 months during which most restaurants fail. And given the fact that he wouldn't have any rent, he is in an even better position to succeed.

Ramsey will teach him a great deal, and add to his prestige in the very small community of people who know who these folks are (i'd never heard of Ramsey before this show), but he will still have the risk that any new restaurant has, as well as needing to find investors or capital to actually open a restaurant AND he will have wasted any cache that would have come with winning this competition.

But what if they make Michael the Chef in an upcoming series, after his apprenticeship? That would set him up pretty well (provided he and the show’s ratings do well).

Would Michael really be a draw for existing or new viewers? Would The Apprentice have been as interesting if Bill Rancic hosted the next season? A huge part of the reason why people watch is to see the Donald. Same for Hell's Kitchen. I know I got interested when I saw the previews of Ramsay hilariously berating the would-be chefs.

I think the restaurant is supposed to be worth $2 Million, according to the casting call in Boston.

"Winner receives their own restaurant in Hollywood worth 2 Million Dollars."

15. "Holy Tomatos He gets BOTH!! very cool!"
http://jam.canoe.ca/Television/2005/08/06/1161547.html

Michael Wray barely survived months of working with hot-headed British chef Gordon Ramsay -- now he's going back for more.

The winner of Fox's summer hit Hell's Kitchen is packing up his life and moving to England where he'll be trained by the celebrity chef, known as much for his foul-mouthed outbursts as he is for his cooking.

"Nothing is personal in the kitchen, and outside the kitchen he is wonderful," Wray says of his mentor.

"It's gonna be great."

Wray plans to make the move overseas within the next two months and then return to the U.S. next year when he'll start-up his $2 million US restaurant -- his prize for winning.

If all goes as planned, it will open in Las Vegas in 2007.

"I'd love to be in one of the big hotels, preferably at the Palms Casino Resort or at the Hard Rock Hotel," he says, adding he is not yet sure what type of food he'll offer his customers. "It's all about the space you are in."

Though viewers just found out Monday the 28-year-old conquered the culinary competition, Wray has had to keep the secret for seven months.

"In the beginning it was hard (not to tell), but it became fun. I made up stories. Somehow though, everybody just knew."

Maybe it's Wray's self-confidence that gave it away.

The Colorado resident, who lived in Ottawa as a teenager, was convinced he was going to win Hell's Kitchen from the first day of taping.

"From the beginning, I knew I was my toughest competition. I really just had to keep on top of it," he says.

That self-assurance, along with 12 years of kitchen experience, is likely what led Wray to victory, despite some vicious competition -- the toughest being Ralph Pagano, a 36-year-old freelance chef from New Jersey, who came in second when the symbolic door to his new restaurant didn't open during the finale.

"I felt guilty in the beginning about Ralph. I was hoping both of our doors would open at the same time," says Wray.

That guilt, however, has subsided. Wray is glad to report that Pagano is also living his dream -- he has opened his own deli/restaurant in Sag Harbor New York called Fat Ralphs.

Wow - thanks for the update! So - he gets to have his cake and eat it too - good on 'em! Aside from the fact that the "novelty factor" will have died down by the time he opens, he will be a much better chef after apprenticing with Ramsey. That to me, translates in a much higher liklihood he will succeed when he does open.

This news also helps me understand how quick he was to say yes to the offer after hearing he had won.

My favorite thing about this show is that it showed a dream coming true after putting alot of effort and hard work towards it. Aside from the cheesy editing ... who cares if someone gives themselves pep talks..

I think Micheal made a really bad decision. I mean, why would he want to spend most of rest of his life being yelled by Gordon? He had enough of that. He was getting a chance to win his own resturant, be his own boss, live wealthy and happy for the rest of his life, and get rid of that evil physco.

But, NOOOOOO!!! Micheal wants to be treated like a dog and follow chefs oreders for the rest of his life. So, Micheal made a wrong decision. I wanted him to win, but that was a bad decision. Plus, Gordon should have atleast given that resturant to Ralph, since micheal didn't wanted it, so why not?

Intresting show though!
