"2014 NHL Playoff Pick'em" |
Pick the winning team from each series right up to the conference and Stanley Cup finals. In its infinite wisdom, the NHL screwed around with the playoff format when it approved realignment, so you might actually want to read the instructions this year: Atlantic Division *No. 1 seed in division vs. Wild Card team *No. 2 seed in division vs. No. 3 seed in division Metropolitan Division *No. 1 seed in division vs. Wild Card team *No. 2 seed in division vs. No. 3 seed in division The winners of those series will face each other for the division championship. The two division champions will then compete for the conference championship and the right to battle for the Stanley Cup against the winner of the opposing conference.
Should all my picks come in, I collect 4 points and my winning teams move on to the second round, where the winners in each division play one another. Then the division winners play each other for the conference championship, and those winners play for the Stanley Cup. Correct picks in the first round are worth 1 point, 2 in the second, 3 in the third and 5 for the final. Pick a series in the correct number of games, i.e., Montreal over Buffalo in six games. So, along with naming your series winner, predict in how many games the series will end. One half-point (0.5) will awarded for each correct answer. No points for correct # of games if you have the series winner wrong. Lastly, in the unlikely event that we end up tied (which happened in 2013), a tie-breaking question for your viewing pleasure. Tell me how many goals will be scored in the Stanley Cup deciding game. Closest to the answer without going over wins the tiebreaker. Your picks must be submitted by replying to this thresd before the playoffs begin. This year's playoff match-ups: Eastern Conference Atlantic Division 1. Boston vs. WC2 Detroit 2. Tampa Bay vs. 3. Montreal Metropolitan Division 1. Pittsburgh Penguins vs. WC1 Columbus 2. New York Rangers vs. Philadelphia Western Conference Pacific Division 1. Anaheim vs. WC2 Dallas 2. San Jose vs. 3. Los Angeles Central Division 1. Colorado vs. WC1 Minnesota 2. St Louis vs. 3. Chicago Blackhawks Previous winners: 2013: Col. Zoidberg 2012: mrc 2011: mrc 2010: smokedog 2009: Col. LAST EDITED ON 04-14-14 AT 03:17 PM (EST)Well, I'm not going to forget and submit my picks late this year! Of course, last year was my 1 time in 10 where things align my way so I'll have to wait another decade but, oh well. I may switch later but at least I won't 'no height'. Metropolitan Division: Pittsburgh over Columbus in 5 (wow, Columbus' first ever playoff win!) Philadelphia over NY Rangers in 7 Atlantic Division: Boston over Detroit in 6 Montreal over Tampa Bay in 6 Central Division: Colorado over Minnesota in 5 St. Louis over Chicago in 7 (since everyone will no doubt pick Chicago, I'll go contrarian) Pacific Division: Anaheim over Dallas in 5 San Jose over LA in 7 (real toss up for me) Divisional Finals: Metro: Pittsburgh over Philly in 6 Atlantic: Boston over Montreal in 5 Central: St. Louis over Colorado in 7 Pacific: San Jose over Anaheim in 7 Conference Finals: Boston over Pittsburgh in 6 (have to go with Rask over Fleury) St. Louis over San Jose in 6 Stanley Cup Finals: Boston over St. Louis in 5 (If all the above happens, St. Louis will be too tired to put up a good fight against the more rested Bruins) Hope this is all filled out ok. ETA: Tie-breaker: 6

Mwahahahahaha...time to defend my title. I guess, anyway. Can't believe I moonwalked my way to the title last year when I had the Pens going all the way.Well...let's see if I've learned anything this year. Eastern Conference Atlantic Division 1. Boston vs. WC2 Detroit - I Was hoping the Wings would get the Pens after a strong end-of-season showing and the likelihood of getting Zetterberg back. This won't be easy. Or even possible. Bruins in 5 2. Tampa Bay vs. 3. Montreal - Sounds like a toss-up. Going with the team that's been a wee bit better. Habs in 6 Metropolitan Division 1. Pittsburgh Penguins vs. WC1 Columbus - The Blue Jackets are in their second ever playoff trip, and Columbus is excited. Of course, the Pens have had their number all year. Pens in a sweep 2. New York Rangers vs. Philadelphia - The Flyers are kind of not on their game right now. Rangers in 6 Western Conference Pacific Division 1. Anaheim vs. WC2 Dallas - I don't see a wild card winning much of anything this playoff season. Ducks in 5 2. San Jose vs. 3. Los Angeles - When in doubt, go with the team that's proven they can win in the playoffs. Kings in 6 Central Division 1. Colorado vs. WC1 Minnesota - Vomit. Av-holes in 6 2. St Louis vs. 3. Chicago Blackhawks - The Blues have moonwalked into the playoffs. And I mean that in the "going backward" sense. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWKS in 6 DIVISION FINALS Atlantic 1. Boston vs. 3. Montreal - The Bruins are just too good. Bruins in 6 Metro 1. Pittsburgh vs. 2. NY Rangers - Marc-Andre Fleury may have to stand on his head. Fortunately for the Pens, he's shown he can do that without too much trouble. Pens in 6 Pacific 1. Anaheim vs. 3. Los Angeles - Not ready to trust the Ducks yet. Kings in 6 Central 1. Colorado v. 3. Chicago - Can I pick both of them to lose? HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWKS in 6 CONFERENCE FINALS EASTERN: Boston vs. Pittsburgh - Boston Strong is still a thing. So is revenge. Pens in 6 WESTERN: Chicago vs. Los Angeles - Yes, yes, same as last year. Same result? At least here. HAAAAAAAAAAAAWKS in 7 STANLEY CUP FINAL Pittsburgh vs. Chicago - I'm predictable. I went with this as my final last year. I also, um, yeah, won. Pens in 7 Final goal count: 6
