"The Winter Classic and Gordie Howe"
In what is no doubt a preview of what the Super Bowl is going to be like next month, we've got a scoreless hockey game midway through the second period with neither team able to make crisp passes with the snow accumulating on the ice.

Interesting game, though. Both teams have had their chances that they couldn't quite convert. It'll be interesting to see if the Super Bowl unfolds in the same manner with the weather creating conditions where funny hops and difficulty in controlling the ball/puck causes unusual scoring chances and/or prevent chances from being scored in the usual manner.

It was good to see Mr. Hockey out there greeting other legends - he's really showing his age now at 85. I saw this article that I thought was worth sharing, a great insight into his life after his wife of 56 years passed away five years ago:

And... if any of you happen to be within reach of the Canadian border, there's a CBC movie airing tonight at 8 pm on Gordie Howe's life. (Or check CBC.ca, see whether there's video on there that is accessible south of the border?)

...and just as soon as I clicked 'post', Zetterberg Alfredsson scored for the Wings. 1-0 game now.

(Sure looked to me like Zetterberg's pass went off Lupul's stick into the net and didn't seem like Alfredsson ever touched it, but that's what the official scorer says)

Both goalies have been spectacular in this game.

2. "2nd intermission"
1-1 game now - van Riemsdyk just scored about 30 seconds before the second period ended.

I'm digging some of the camera angles being used to show the game, although there's one in particular that is dizzying. Also digging the old-style uniforms the two teams are using for this game.

3. "Third period"
2-1 for the Leafs now after a Bozak mid-air deflection of a point shot from Phaneuf. The eye-hand coordination is astounding, really, when you casually pick out a hard shot in mid-air and just deflect it enough to change directions by a few degrees.

Abdelkader scored with 5 mins left to tie up the game. Tight game.

Wonder if Hobbs is there at the game?

5. "Leafs win in shootout, 3-2"
Game clincher by Bozak came after the Wing before him lost the puck with it bouncing all over the choppy ice surface.

A regular season rarity: The post-game handshake between the two teams that you normally would only see after a post-season series has ended.
