"NBA: lose the big games."
I generally don't pay much attention to the early portions of an NBA season -- or the middle, later, playoffs -- but there's something of possible note happening here. Y'see, due to the NBA's lottery system, deliberately tanking an entire year only works if the draw has been rigged for you. Blow every game possible and it's still a 25% chance of having your combination come out of the hopper. Since most draft years produce a single possible franchise player (plus one only known as such a season later), it can be worth trying -- but oh, does failure sting.

This year is different.

Multiple NBA experts feel the next draft is going to have multiple franchise players. At least two. Could be six. Which suddenly means that for once, the consolation prize for not picking first -- just might be picking second. Or third, fourth...

Which means multiple NBA general managers have already given up on this season. And told their coaches to do the same.

Game are going to be lost. Across the league, this number will be 50% -- but the bad teams are going to be very bad. And since they need to lose to someone, the good teams will look a little too good.

Basically, we're on the verge of enough custom-built tanking to overwhelm the entire Discovery Channel.

Watch those won-loss records. This is going to get ugly.

No wonder the Celtics traded Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett and brought in an NBA rookie head coach for this season.

If I had to pick a college coach who will succeed in the NBA, Brad Stevens would be at the top of my list. He won't win too many games this season with the Celtics' cruddy roster, but he's a solid coach who took mid-major talent at Butler and got them to two NCAA championship games so he knows how to coach. I've been to several Butler games (my niece is a student there) and have first-hand experience that Brad Stevens gets the most out of his players.

Keep the faith.

Yep. We are going to see more tanking than a toilet factory. With just about the same amount of verbal crap passing through.

I'm mildly offended that the 76ers aren't taking as serious an early run as they should be, especially given that it's their own record at stake. Oh, well -- there's still plenty of time to recover and start losing on pace.

Meanwhile, the two NYC teams are trying to figure out what they're doing -- in the NBA.

So if you're a Bulls fan, which are you feeling more of right now? Irony or intense nausea?

We have such an openly blatant parade of tanks (with every last driver swearing it's actually a race car), FAUX News just declared the entire situation as Obama's fault.
