aethelstan 4348 desperate attention whore postings DAW Level: "Jerry Springer Show Guest" 03-18-13, 11:14 AM (EST) "March Madness Pick 8" Here, once again, the fun "Pick 8" pool. Since we've had this pool for several years in a row, I've trimmed the first post to just the basics. Thanks to Gothmog for introducing this game to SBOT/RTVW. Here are the rules: 1. Each team in the tournament is assigned a point value, based on their seed. (See below). 2. Before the first game on Thursday (the play-in games don't count), you must pick 8 teams. You may pick any 8 that you like, regardless of where they appear in the bracket (although it's wisest to pick teams that won't meet each other right away). 3. For every team that you pick, they get their pre-assigned point value each time they win. Once the team loses, they can no longer get any points. 4. You cannot change teams or edit your picks after the start of the first game on Thursday 5. The winner is the person with the most total points. If there is a tie, then the tiebreaker is total number of points that will be scored by both teams in the CHAMPIONSHIP game (closest wins). Here are how the points are assigned: Seed....Point value per win 1............1 2-3.........2 4-5.........3 6-8.........4 9-11.......5 12-13......6 14-15......7 16..........8 If you'd like to play, then sometime before Thursday, post your 8 teams and the total number of points you think will be scored by both teams in the championship game (to be used as a tie-breaker).   Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Not because there haven't been any upsets but because out of 13 entries, 10 picked Wisconsin! 9 of us picked Saint Louis, 7 Miami and OSU, Duke, Michigan, Syracuse and Butler were picked 6 times. Why I picked Butler here and not in my bracket, I have no idea. There were 8 conferences that had 3 or more entries into the field of 68 (and 64). Big East (8), Big Ten (7)*, Big-12 (5), Pac-12 (5), A-10 (5), MWC (5/4 depending on what you are counting), ACC (4) and SEC (3 including newcomer Mizzou). I tried to pick what I thought were the best F8 and F4 candidates apart from the #1 seeds, working out the projected points based on my pick 'em bracket predictions. It turns out that an even mix of #2/3 and #4/5 teams had the most predicted points. Starshine (and also CTGirl) used the same basic strategy. Starshine and I differed with only two picks (his Michigan St and Oklahoma St to my Ohio St and St Louis) and CTGirl and I differed with just a single pick (her Bucknell to my Michigan). "Well, this is embarrassing" I use a spreadsheet to help me not only with the tallying of points but also with the creation of the posts, using vlookups and preformatting the commas, etc. Anyway, the names and the list of teams comes from one section but the totals come from another. So, to make a long story short, I made a mistake with snidget's and my totals. I had been counting California instead of Oregon for me and Michigan instead of Michigan State for snidget. If you add up across you'll see that it doesn't add up. It's fixed now and I've adjusted my spreadsheet to show totals from both places to act as a cross-reference for me. So, sorry about that.
