No wind.

No rain.

No fog.

No chill.

No bogeys.

A links course needs bad weather to be effective. This -- is not.

The gawds of golf must not have been pleased. (Then again, name one time when they've ever been happy.) Should I try to break down position relative to par against tee time relative to rain? We've got thirty-five golfers at or below the Suggested Retail Price, and I'm guessing most of them had to get up early...

Right now, what's bothering me is the ESPN front page. The tournament is the lead center story. Roy McIlroy is the lead picture and headline. And Adam Scott tying the course record? A distant fourth.

There's nothing like four bogeys on the last four holes to ruin one's day at the course.

The second happiest person at the Open had to be Tiger Woods, since he won't have to listen to Steve Williams braying for the next year or so.

Cheers for Ernie Els who really is a great guy and has been through a lot in the past few years, focusing more on his foundation than on his golf game lately.

8. "RE: Ernie Els?"
Congratulations to Ernie. Yes, Scott self-destructed but Els still had to play under par, which no one else did.

I guess he will be invited at the Masters next year!

As much as I like Ernie Els, that was a heartbreaker.

The unfortunate putting that followed not-withstanding, that was an amazing 3rd shot from the fairway Adam Scott hit to even make a playoff possible, after hitting into the bunker from the tee.

Yes, but is that like saying, "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?"??

11. "RE: Ernie Els?"
For me, the real turning point was when Scott three-putted 16 from 20 feet to make bogey. On a day when everyone (including Els) was trying to drive the par-4 16th, Scott had laid up on his drive to make the sure par and keep his 3-shot lead. But then he hit a poor chip, leaving himself with the 20-footer -- which he misread slightly, leaving himself a 3-footer for par -- which he inexplicably started left, and it lipped out.

At that point, I started believing that the ghost of Jean van de Velde might be haunting Adam Scott, and so it was.
