So how is your team doing? Where will the big UFA Suter and Parise go?

Detorit's got lots of cap space and they are chasing both Suter and Parise but I think they got some good pieces in Tootoo and Samuelsson back. Damien Brunner from Swisserland will be a nice project that the Wings always seem to find. Joey McDonald is not happy with the signing of Jonas Gustavsson but his play was up and down when Howard was out.

We really need to land Suter or our D is going to be really bad with the lost of Nick and Stuart.f

Oh, we lost Happy Hudler to Calgary for $4 mil a year. They over paid.

Ouch! Now the Wild have 1/2 their cap (as it is now with the new CBA they say it will go down) tied up in 5 players. Hope they have enough money for the other 3 lines.

"The NHL salary cap is going up, allowing teams to spend about $6 million more on players this season.

Before opening labor talks, the league and the NHL Players' Association announced the cap has been set at $70.2 million. That's a significant jump from last year's cap of $64.3 million...

I understand that it went up but from what's been coming out of the CBA talks the league wants it down to help teams. There are rumors that a 10% cut to all could happen again thus why a lot of people are putting signing bonuses in the contracts. That would not be part of the 10% cut.

But Bettman will look like the fool he truly is when he brings the argument of helping teams while insisting on keeping a team in Phoenix which his losing millions instead of moving it to Québec. Teams need help? Tough, especially since they tied player salary to league revenu. The players will say: If a team doesn't contribute to league revenu then MOVE. To have 3 teams in NYC is simply ridiculous. To have two teams in Florida is just as dumb.

You won't get an argument out of me about Bettman and some teams should be folded or moved. I think Quebec will support a team for a bit like Phoenix and then if they are not good it will lead to a big fall off.

The reason the team folded in the 90s wasn't from lack of fan support. The low Canadian dollar and the lack of a salary cap were the main causes.

Hey, even the old AHL Quebec Aces did great before the WHA's Nordiques drove them out of the city.

Underestimating the hockey potential in ice-cold Quebec City while overestimating it in boiling-hot Phoenix is such a classic Bettman blunder that it isn't even funny. And just imagine what business a team in Kitchener-Waterloo (instead of, say, Miami or New Jersey) would do without damaging the markets of either Buffalo or Toronto! But you're going to be limited to imagining it, because Bettman's not going to let himself be made to look foolish by permitting such moves to happen.

5. "RE: Suter and Parise to the Wild for 13 years $98 million each"
Oh, the Wild will be just fine. They've already got some decent players in Koivu and Heatley (who will prolly be rejuvenated by having a decent linemate in Parise to take some of the offensive load off), and they've got some good prospects coming up. They also just signed Zenon Konopka who is a great faceoff man - always a bonus to have in a critical moment - and Torrey Mitchell who will provide some depth on the third or fourth lines.

All in all, it's one heck of a day for the Wild and they've just moved up in the West pecking order ahead of teams such as the Ducks, Avalanche, Flames, and even the Predators who stand a decent shot of losing Shea Weber in addition to Suter.

7. "RE: Suter and Parise to the Wild for 13 years $98 million each"
Yes, they'll move up but won't be part of the top of the West or their division as a one line teams have not done so well. The Av's have a lot of young and talented players so I'm not ready to put them in front of them yet but the rest yes. Vancouver is still tops in the division. LA, Van, Dallas, St. Louis are tier one, Detroit (if they don't get some D drop them down), Chicago (still need a goalie), SJ (still needs to find a way not to choke) and Minn (is on the line btw 2 and 3) are tier two, Phx (if they keep Doan up a tier) and Edm tier 3: then all the rest.

The West is going to be so close this year as parity really hits it hard.

Nashville tried to win it all last year with their moves (I bought it) and took some big hits losing Suter and Radulov going back to the KHL and I think they'll loose Weber next year to a $100 million plus contract to Philly or Pitt (who cleared out space for both Suter and Parise and lost out worst than the Wings).

13. "Weber - 14 years $100+ M"
LAST EDITED ON 07-19-12 AT 09:37 AM (EST)

There's an offer sheet signed by Shea Weber with Philadelphia for 14 years and about $100 million. The Preds have 7 days to match the offer or take four first-round picks for him.

Hummm. The question is whether the Preds feel like they still have a shot at winning with Weber but without Suter, or if they should rebuild with the four picks. If I'm the Preds, I resign Weber as he's a franchise cornerstone that you aren't likely to get with any of the four picks especially if the Flyers are consistently in the late stages of the first round. It also sends a message to the rest of the team that the management is committed to winning.

Completely stupid. Signing a player to a contract of that lenght is simply ridiculous. To think the NHL is trying to impose a limit of 5 years and then you have these morons making offers like this.

The problem is not that Nashville wants and needs him (think of the fan base if you lost Suter and Weber it would be like Buffalo a few years back) but the either $58 million or $68 million that's owed within the first year from all the signing bounces that's being reported. OUCH! I don't think Nashville's got that kind of cash.

Plus if Philly is good those are not 4 high 1st round picks but talent can be found there or traded for higher picks but it's hard to replace your No. 1 D team (see Detroit this year) and still contend for the cup. If they lose him Detroit and Nashville might be battling for the bottom of the division.

The wild card maybe the new CBA with contract length restrictions and front end loading salary cap games to end. Maybe Nashville thinks it will be more sound in the future to let him go and get someone later under the new CBA (Some think Ken Holland is doing that but then again they made a big run at Suter so I think they are off based there).

The big thing is not just that Nashville might have a little trouble affording the $68 million over the first four years, but also that Weber would be guaranteed $26 million over the next eleven months, regardless of whether there's a work stoppage or not. That is a real killer for a franchise such as Nashville which doesn't have a whole lot of money (but easier for a team such as Philly to absorb).

The scuttlebutt up here on a Canadian sports talk show was that this deal could be a franchise killer for Nashville. Let Weber go and fans could stop coming to games en masse, resulting in the franchise losing tons of money and forcing a move ... or pay Weber, lose even more money with the $68 million in the first four years and be forced to sell the team (which could then move), especially if there's a work stoppage of some sort.

LAST EDITED ON 07-19-12 AT 10:20 PM (EST)

Yeah I saw the bit about the pay regardless of work stoppage on TSN's Off The Record show earlier today, but am having trouble finding that specific information online. Here's an article:

http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/blog/eye-on-hockey/19613918/shea-weber-offer-sheet-appears-to-be-heavily-loaded-up-front-with-signing-bonuses

Here's how I see it, based on the article: Weber gets a $13 million signing bonus immediately when this contract is signed. Then when the season starts (whether it's in early October or later in the year after a work stoppage), he gets paid $1 million salary for the season. Then next July 1, he gets another $13 million as part of his signing bonus. So... that's $27 million between next Thursday (July 26) and July 1 of next year (a little over 11 months).

So you could easily make the case that he's going to get that money regardless of what happens, as long as the season starts at some point before next July 1.

ETA: I agree this kind of contract is a frickin' joke. They need to change the CBA so that the year-by-year monetary amounts are within a certain range throughout the contract, none of that $13 million early on and $1 million for the final three years, a la Kovalchuk, Parise, Suter and others. Set a limit of 10 years (or 8 years, I have no objection to long contracts as long as they pay proper value per year) and throw out signing bonuses. And make the full salary for that season count against the cap that same year instead of averaging it out.

Let's say that a contract is offered, 10 years for $100 million - there should be a rule that says that the lowest in any year can be, i.e., 20 percent below the average ($8 mil being the minimum in this scenario) and the highest in any year being 20 percent above (up to $12 mil). This way, salaries would be within a range for the entire contract, no Kovalchukesque B.S. like $6M, $6, $11.5, $11.5, $11.5, $11.5, $11.5, $10.5, $8.5, $6.5, $3.5, $750K, $550K, $550K, $550K, $550K, $550K - which is what he originally agreed upon with the Devils before the NHL threw it out.
