I think Luongo is still an useful goalie who's been to the Finals, just needs a change of scenery. By contrast, Bryzgalov has got a huge contract, a lousy playoff record and a growing reputation as a head case, so it'll be a lot more difficult to find suitors for him.

I can't disagree. Goalie is such a tough position. A headcase guy with his talent in any other position would become a great, say, second line centre and have value to many teams. But each team only gets to play one goalie at a time, so that position can't have headcases.

LAST EDITED ON 05-09-12 AT 04:38 PM (EST)*grin* ... well, I sometimes wonder if there's been more goalies that were head cases than perfectly sane, to tell you the truth. Gotta be insane to stand there and get pummeled by frozen vulcanized bits of rubber night in, night out. Ron Hextall, Patrick Roy, Gilles Gratton, Ray Emery, Tuukka Rask, Billy Smith, Mike Palmateer, Gerry Cheevers, Gump Worsley, and so on. They were all nuts for the most part. Gratton (a.k.a. "Grattoony the Loony") once skated onto the ice buck naked except for his goalie pads and mask, and he also believed he was reincarnated from a soldier from the Spanish Inquisition.

LAST EDITED ON 05-01-12 AT 00:19 AM (EST)The Kings are loaded with good players who underperformed in the regular season, so when you look on the surface, this is a team that is fully capable of being a division leader and a top-seed, instead of being an 8th seed. Carter, Kopitar, Brown, Richards, Williams, Doughty, et al, these are all proven players and some of them have been through the grind of making it to the Finals. They had a lot of changes in the last off-season and in mid-season, looks like they needed all of that time to develop chemistry. They sure have that chemistry now.

...and the Kings are the first to punch their ticket to the conference finals with a 3-1 win. Dustin Brown is certainly looking like an early favourite to be the Conn Smythe winner with his play thus far and I'm not sure if anyone is going to beat the Kings with the players they've got and the confidence/chemistry they were lacking most of the year.

Phx wins 5-3.I think Nashville had two problems last night. One was the lax defensive play. Legwand's hand pass TO THE FRONT OF THE NET was one of the most bone-headed plays I've ever seen in the NHL. Radulov also deserved some of the whipping Keith Jones gave him between periods. The second problem I saw was that Nashville was playing helter-skelter hockey last night. Even tied or down just one goal, they were up and down the ice, which isn't their style of hockey. Phoenix deserves credit. I never thought Smith would spectacular goalie, but he's doing his job. Of course, Blaine Lacher was a good goalie for a short time as well. Done by a Cap

Despite the suspensions - or maybe because of the suspensions - the Preds play strong and ride Rinne to 2-0 win to make the series 2-1 for Phoenix.

Interesting note... between the two conferences, there's a #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 seed left, while there's been a #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 seed eliminated. Nice symmetry.

that's cool. I especially liked the air miles graphic. Wonder how that will end up by the end of the playoffs. I would like to see that stat for the regular season. Western teams have long contended they have a harder run because of travel.

36. "Question." |
Question for the Canadians hockey historians: How often does a #8 seed make the conference finals? Has a #8 seed ever won the Cup? The last wild card team of a conference has won the Super Bowl a few times in the NFL, so I assume the same thing happens occasionally in the NHL.

37. "RE: Question." |
I saw something on the sports news the other night that LA is the 3rd #8 to make the conference finals. Montreal (2010 - losing in Conference final to Philly) and Edmonton (2006 - went to Cup finals losing to Carolina in 7 games) are the others, and neither won the Cup those years. LA is the first of those 3 to beat both the #1 and #2 seed to accomplish the feat.Remember, Max, that this seeding thing hasn't been around for that long (only since 1994). Prior to that they had the 4 divisions compete and then bring the 4 division champs together for the conference and Stanley Cup finals. Since 1995 when they went to the current format (18 playoffs), 8 times no #8 made the second round, 10 times one #8 has made it to the second round, and 0 times both #8s made the second round. And yet only 3 times #8 makes it to the 3rd round, and only 1 time to the finals. Just for comparison I did some digging re #7 seeds also. - 3 times both #7s made second round - 9 times one #7 made second round - 5 times neither #7 made second round - 4 times a #7 made the Stanley Cup final (all four times losing - Vancouver in 94, Buffalo in 99, Anaheim in 2003, Philly 2010)
17 years, and 4 Cup finals for the #7 seeds. Not bad. But a lot of betting money will be for a #8 to win it all this year! LA looks awesome.
