"Rugby Football World Cup"
Well I have to admit I never would have predicted that Canada would beat Samoa. Would have thought that Samoa would just bully them off the pitch, biiiig upset there, way to go!

Nice to see Scotland doing well, although we are a bit hookie on the bonus points. Hopefully we can beat England.

Looks like a southern hemisphere tourney though, have to say that I think the All Blacks are looking very good.

Lovely cheese Mooney

Just another Sleeperbloke

Well, seeing as we didn't play Samoa ;), I think your prediction is bang on. Besides, we've lost to Samoa the only 2 times we've played them. However, on Saturday, we did beat Tonga for the 3rd straight time in World Cup play, which is extremely satisfying since it's Canada's first win in RWC in 8 years.

I'm not so sure it's a biiiig upset. An upset sure but Tonga is ranked 12th in the world (as of Sep 12), Japan (also in the same group) is ranked 13th and Canada 14th. I think the matches between them should be fairly even but each is likely to lose to both France and New Zealand. Canada's almost always been in the second tier of countries in rugby.

Btw, my cousin and her husband are both in NZ watching. They both played rugby and are huge fans.

Would be nice to see the All Black win for the first time since '87 but we'll see. Although they've finished in the top 4 more than any other country (tie with France at 5), something always seems to come up that prevents them from winning despite being favoured.

And here I always assumed that you were a London bloke. I don't think I could have been more wrong! My FIL is Scottish from Ayrshire near Glasgow, iirc.

Nationality is a tricky thing over here...

We are all British, which would be OK, however there are very few sports that the UK takes part in (tbh I can only think of Curling). My Father was English, however my Mothers family is Scottish Portobello, near Edinburgh (and a dash of Chinese), so the country that I follow first is Scotland, even though I do live very close to London.

Of course Ireland makes everything a little odd, as in Rugby their players come from two countries... And in Cricket Wales are included in the England team.

Dash it! I was remembering back to when I saw Western Samoa beat Wales at the Arms Park again!

For me having relooked at Canada I see the tiers as:

1) Wallabies, Springboks and All Blacks

2) England, France, Argentina.

3) Wales, Ireland, Scotland.

4) Samoa, Italy, Tonga, Canada and Japan.

5) Everyone else (Although Romania were always going to be the sixth nation when I was young, and Russia have been impressive in the past. The USA can beat weak teams, but have never been able to cope with a physical game.)

I think that's a fair assessment of the tiers (though Argentina may be a little generous). France, though they've never won always do well in RWC. The reason I mentioned Canada as a tier two nation is because of this line in the wiki page about rugby in Canada

Canada is classified by the International Rugby Board (IRB) as a tier two rugby nation alongside Fiji, Japan, Romania, Samoa, Tonga and the USA (there are ten tier one rugby nations). Tier two nations do not have a full-time professional domestic structure in place, but they are considered by the IRB to be the most promising countries in which to expand the sport.

Clearly all tier one countries aren't equal and you've identified the differences.
