"Biggest Loser 2 Episode 1 Summary - The Weight is Over"
Hello everyone, and welcome to The Second Biggest Loser. I mean, The Biggest Loser 2.

It’s a show about fat people and their struggle for acceptance in a world that is hostile to people with a little excess baggage. Not really! It’s actually about the struggle to eliminate the excess weight by eliminating excess intake and adding excess exercise. This season promises to be even bigger than the last, a fact which is borne out by one look at the huge cast. And by huge, I don’t mean there ARE more of them, I mean there IS more of them. We learn quickly that this season the teams are separated into men vs. women, with percentage weight loss the truck scale yardstick by which they will be measured.

Meet The Contestants

Matt
- he is a former college wrestler who had aspirations of Olympic proportions. Now he’s just of Olympic proportions, as he’s really let himself go. Okay, I’m trying to be nice here and refrain from snarking too much about each contestant’s weight, but I never promised not to comment about hair - his hairstyle is just plain ridiculous.

Jeff
- is a doctor finding it hard to give medical advice to patients he can barely examine without rubbing his gigantic belly up against them.

Seth
is a 24 year old man who wants to be able to run around and play with his one year oldson. He wants to be the ultimate dad. His son is a cutie.

Mark
is a police officer from California. He’s beat cancer, quit smoking, and now is ready to tackle the weight loss. He looks just like a tree trunk. Tree trunks don’t have necks, do they? How come every time I see him on screen, I want to ask if he lives in a "van down by the river"? (semi-obscure Saturday Night Live reference there, folks.)

Ruben
– Fat? I’m not fat! Isn’t this Survivor?

Pete
– in so many words blames a love/hate relationship for his weight predicament. He loves food and hates exercise. His goal is to be able to slam-dunk a basketball. Well, maybe on the kiddie hoops Pete.

Nick
– he’s a comedian from Southern California who would rather have chips and dip than sex. My guess is that every female watching feels the same way about you, Nick.

Suzanne
is an NYPD police officer who realizes how dangerous her weight problem is for her and everyone else.

Jen
is a medical student who isn’t focusing on her health. She is looking to make a permanent lifestyle change.

Suzy
got the fat gene in her family as her mom and sister are both skinny. Did she get the ugly glasses gene too? Seriously, new eyewear would make a huge difference. Sorry, I didn’t mean to say HUGE. Plus, she’s 29. From what I understand, nearing a 30th birthday can have extreme effects on some women.

Ryan
- would love her husband to see her gorgeous and healthy like shes always dreamed of being. Indeed, there is quite a beautiful young women in there. Too bad Ryan ate her!

Shannon
– is a self-proclaimed diva who claims she wants to set a good example for her daughter by learning how to “eat to live” instead of “live to eat”.

Andrea

– thinks she’s a princess but wants to feel like one too. She was thin most of her life, but having kids and giving up sports has not been a good combination for her body.

Kathryn
– wants a more powerful body to match her powerful mind. As an attorney, she is used to crushing her opposition, but would prefer to accomplish this solely with her intellect.

A Farewell to Food

Caroline Rhea is back as our hostess to cheer on the losers and console them when they leave. She looks like a bit of a loser herself, perhaps a bit more slender than last season. Anyway, she tells the cast they’ll have to say goodbye to one more friend, and opens the door to an incredible feast of delicious looking food. They have half an hour, after which they’ll part ways with these sinful treats forever.

None of the contestants seems to be holding back, embracing this final farewell. Suzanne dives face first into the fondue fountain with her outstretched tongue. Let’s just say it was not ladylike. Some of her fellow contestants are disgusted; others strangely aroused. Thirty minutes later, the room is a mess and the contestants are disgusted with themselves. There is still quite a bit leftover; however, but nobody asks for a doggie bag.

It's Official - You're as Big as a House!

Everyone enters the official weighing room; then men with their shirts off – a truly disgusting sight. If you are playing along at home, I can’t think of anything more motivating than a picture of these men without shirts. Caroline introduces them to the Biggest Loser scale. They are surprised with its enormity. Now it’s time for the Team Picking Ceremony (they don’t yet know it’s men vs. women). They are told to look at their chests. Everyone who needs a bra on one side! Oops, that doesn’t work since ALL the men are at least as big as some of the women. Let’s try again: Pull your pants away from your waist and look down. If you see a penis, go to the right. Whoops, that doesn’t work either since none of them can see below their waist. Sigh. Somehow they figure out that it’s men against women.

There’s much whooping and hollering, shouts of “girl power”, etc, but the women think they’re in trouble, while the men think they have it made. Time for the initial weighing and boy do I wish the Bro’ or Manssiere had caught on. Caroline warns them it could be difficult to accept their initial weight.

Starting weights are recorded. Some are truly shocking, such as Shannon: 257 lbs, 5’3”, and Nick: 346 lbs. Suzanne is disgusted by the 229 that registers on the scale. Pete feels horrible and like a whale at 401. Total weight is 1,642 lbs. for the women and 2,383 lbs. for the guys - almost 50% MORE.

Meet the Trainers

The teams walk outside to find that their trainers, Bob and Jillian, are waiting for them. Bob and Jillian are just now learning that the teams are segregated by sex - Jillian gets the guys, Bob gets the girls. They seem shocked by this development. Jillian tells us she’s never done seven guys at the same time. They will have to work for it. Bob also confides he’s never taken on seven women at once, but he’ll work them from the inside and out. That’s it, Bob, give those girls the ole in and out. Jillian warns the guys that in season one every crazy thing she had them do was real and she was just warming up. Bob offers to give the ladies 110% if they give 100%. Kathryn says he will be their Yoda.

The girls team starts by climbing (walking) up a mountain. However, Jeff objects to their attempt to scale him and they switch their attention to the hill behind the ranch. Bob continues to motivate the women; he’s motivating them all the way up the hill. Motivate, Bob; motivate!

Jillian starts working out the guys and takes turns riding them like a pony. ”Save a horse… ride a heifer”. Is this her motto? She ends up working the guys out until they’re sick, but Matt is the only one who actually vomits. Thanks for that close up, camera guys. Next, Jillian gathers the guys for a touchy feely counseling session. We learn that Seth has gained 120 lbs in the three years he’s been married and weighs 291 lbs. now. His goal weight is 165-170, but Jillian suggests they shoot for 200 right now. Jeff rehashes the story we’ve already heard about his patients, yada, yada, yada. Can’t we find out more about one of the other guys? Matt is crying, saying he hit rock bottom shortly before he came here, and again tonight as he’s disappointed with his ability to exercise. He’s an emotional guy and considers this a life-changing experience. He didn’t expect this level of physical pain.

Back with Bob and the Girls. Bob is going to teach them how to watch calories by keeping a food journal. Jillian tells the guys the secret to the Biggest Loser diet: Calories out exceeds calories in! This is a startling revelation. Talk about your crazy fad diet schemes! Also, there will be no processed foods and no processed grains. The best part is that what they learn here, they can take out to the real world when the show is over.

As a motivational technique, each player has selected an outfit that they want to fit into when this is done. Suzanne has selected a wedding dress that won’t fit unless she ditches 100 lbs. Suzy has some flimsy lingerie, which I HOPE she won’t fit into unless she drops about 80 lbs. The guys have goal outfits that aren’t nearly as interesting, except for Mark’s goal outfit, which is his bulletproof vest. He’s hoping it will cover much more of him when he leaves.

The First Team Challenge

It’s now time for the first challenge. To inspire them they will receive a taste of what it’s like to be weightless. Didn’t we already see this on both Rebel Billionaire and Apprentice? Of course, there is one contestant who’s deathly afraid of flying. That person is Suzanne. They will fly into weightlessness and collect ping pong balls. The team with the most balls wins. The guys cheer, since clearly they have more balls than the girls! The prize is 5lbs added to the weight of a member of the other team.

Suzanne is crying and nearly hysterical, but of course she comes through, defying her fear of flights and more importantly her fear of being blamed for a loss. It’s visually fun to watch them floating through the air trying to catch the 150 balls that have been released into the cabin. At the end, the guys win the challenge in a landslide. Eventually Suzanne vomits (in slow motion – thanks again, NBC), but at least that’s another pound or two closer to her goal weight.

Last Minute Preparations

Back at the gym, everyone is working feverishly to lose a couple more pounds before the weigh in. Jillian tells us that Nick is trouble – he wants to do things at his own pace, which she points out has apparently not worked before he came here. Also, Ruben is sabotaging himself by alienating himself from his team. We see a visual of him reading in his room, presumably while the others are working out. The teams make their way to the Scale of Death (Doom?) for the first official weigh in. Each contestant is wearing a t-shirt with a slogan that captures the essence of why they are there. No, they don’t all say “because I’m a grotesque, lardass”. For example, Jeff’s shirt says “to inspire my patients”, Matt’s says “to be an athlete”, and Shannon’s says “to turn up the sexy volume”. What? You want to be louder in bed? Geez, lady, is this really the way to set a good example for your daughter? Ryan’s shirt says “to turn heads”. We can only assume you mean towards you. Caroline informs the teams that this season, the person with the biggest weight loss on the losing team will be immune from elimination. Also, the guys have to choose who gets saddled with the extra five pounds. At this point, what difference does it make? Amid all the fanfare, we get to the weigh-ins. Here’s what each contestant lost:

The Men

Matt – 28
Jeff – 18
Seth – 21
Ruben – 17
Pete – 22
Nick – 28
Mark - 23

Their total weight loss is 157 lbs or 6.59%

The Women

Suzanne – 16
Kathryn – 15
Ryan – 18
Shannon – 15 (10 net)
Andrea – 11
Jen – 19

The final person to be weighed is Suzy. She’s told that in order for the women’s team to win, Suzy will have to show a loss of more than 19 lbs. She has lost 20 lbs! The ladies win! Their total weight loss is 109 lbs, for a percentage of 6.64%. Matt wins immunity because he lost 28 lbs. He wins the tiebreaker over Nick because his percentage was higher. For those of you who are skeptical, but lazy, I did the math and they got it right.

The men are shocked and pissed. Most of the anger – okay ALL of the anger is directed towards Ruben. Matt takes the lead in a team discussion about the day’s events. He thinks Ruben set them up for failure and tells Ruben he may as well pack his bags now. He’s really angry at Ruben’s lack of team spirit and failure to work out while the rest of them was sweating off the pounds. Ruben doesn’t even defend himself until he’s alone in the confessional, where he says he doesn’t believe he caused the team to lose. Maybe not, but you definitely cost yourself any chance at the big money.

Before the elimination, we get cry and tell confessionals from most of the men. It’s too sappy. I don’t feel like writing about it. Suffice to say, they’re all thankful for the opportunity to be there for this life changing experience.

Elimination Ceremony

There isn’t much suspense as everyone chooses Ruben to leave, except Ruben, who chooses Jeff. Caroline tells him that he is a total loser, but not the biggest loser. As Ruben leaves, she tells the others that the first elimination is always difficult, which didn’t seem too accurate tonight. Ruben tells us he had “trust issues” with the group {{VOMIT}}. Hey NBC, I’m ready for MY close up! and the support from his group wasn’t there. Dude, hard to get support from the guys when you’re in your bedroom. Support was waiting for you down in the gym! I’m glad he’s gone. In the final segment, we hear from Ruben, who now weighs 215 lbs. down from 278 when he arrived at the ranch. Actually he looks great and his weight loss is impressive. Well done Ruben, I guess you’re just the kind of guy who has to do things on your own.

That’s all for this week. This season promises to be both entertaining and inspiring. Just remember this advice as you watch: Keep the ice cream in the freezer, your hand out of the cookie jar, and come back here to Reality TV World for all your Biggest Loser information!
