"Lost Season 2 Episode 1 Discussion"
Tonight the long awaited season premiere. I just thought I would get things started as the opening segment has just gone off and we have some good stuff already.

I hope that was enough filler because I am going to put some stuff about the first segment:

The show started inside the hatch with someone getting working out and doing laundry then taking a shower. The hatch door flew open and he started getting guns out to protect himself.

The scene where Shannon saw Walt probably was the creepiest in the entire episode. What I thought was interesting was that Walt was soaking wet and dripping all over. Might that be a clue of some type? Perhaps I'm not remembering the finale right, but Walt was taken from one boat to another without being dipped in water. I'd also be interested to see if anyone who taped the show is able to make out what he is saying the scene . . .

I agree, that was one of the creepiest scenes yet. I watched it over about 10 times. Still can't get it right tho. There was a bunch of whispering going on, so that confuses it. Looks like he said something like "Shhh, it's her"

Someone please help me out here.

didn't the button on the computer in the hatch say "execute". Maybe it can be taken literally - push the button, somebody dies. Maybe it coincides with someone on the boat dying.

I've reversed the audio with my own clip, and I believe Walt says, "Don't press the button. The button is bad." The only words that are not completely crystal clear are "Don't" and the second "The." Unfortunately Sayid's shout overlaps the "Don't."

And the voices clearly say Shannon's name just before Walt's appearance.

Who can it be? Too old to be Danielle's son. How did he get all that stuff there? More questions.

What happened to Walt? Is he dead? (Appearance a la Jack's father) or can he now project himself?

This is good!!!

Locke, Kate and Jack are all three in the hatch and there is a gun being held to Locke's head when Jack finds him. Haven't seen Kate since she was taken

>Scary thing is I'm sure many of us remember dinosaur computers like that one

I remember the dinosaurs, keep telling my kids horror stories about the computers we had when I was their age.
It looks remotely like one of the ones I used to work on back in the 1970's. It looked familiar enough but they didn't show enough of it to figure out which one it might be. I tried to see if there was any sign of a 'brand name' visible, but it went past too fast, too dark. Judging by the console and keyboard in the close-up, it doesn't look like any IBM model I used, maybe it could be a UNIVAC. In that case, I'd say no later than the very early 1980's.

So, just 'who' would have brought a computer system like that to a deserted island? We can probably safely assume it was there before Danielle arrived, she's only been there 16 years, the computers back then weren't that archaic looking.

Would the people responsible have used brand spanking new computers, the latest models? Or could it have been salvaged equipment somebody lugged over there to install for whatever clandestine purpose? New equipment would date the hatch at the mid 70's to early 80's, nothing Danielle would have been involved with. Old equipment could have been part of her expedition, but that leaves us with why they'd take old stuff instead of the latest and greatest new technology in existence 16 years ago, especially to an island in the middle of nowhere, miles from the computer repair depot which old equipment would need quite often.

If we could figure out what vintage the equipment is, maybe find out what kind of scientific research or espionage was going on in that era, then we might be able to get somewhere with figuring out the purpose of the hatch.

Just more mysteries to add to the list.

I'm thinking the computer could be a Commodore 64. Vintage about 1979-1980. Coupling that with the LP record with the Petula Clarke song (early 70s?), it's looking like equipment was possibly involved in a shipwreck about 25 years ago. Does not seem likely Danielle's group (16 years ago) would have brought that outdated stuff.

Could it be there have been more shipwrecks/crashes than we know about already?

Now how long ago did Desmond meet Jack in the stadium? I'm guessing Jack was in his late 20s at that time. Maybe 16 years ago? Maybe Desmond was on Danielle's expedition and found this equipment on the island?

What was the serum Desmond injected? Could it be a youth serum of some type - maybe from a plant found on the island. If so I would expect Sun to be one the characters eventually flushing this out.

So many delicious questions and so much juicy speculation!!!!

I think he had nothing else to point at as I think the person holding the gun to Locke's head is behind something and Jack can't see him.

So far the spoiler has been spot on. So, I guess we know who is in the hatch but how did he get on the island?

So much for my "That Aussie runner is on the other side of the island" theory.

Did everyone hear the tag at the end? "Next week , the fate of ALL the survivors will be revealed." Sounds like we meet Rose's husband, Ana Lucia, Gilligan, and the rest.

20. "Wonderful . . . "
Really great start to the season. Loved the opening sequence, the scene with Walt/Shannon, Hurley/Jack's discussion of the numbers, and Locke, Kate, and Jack going into the hatch.

One thing that constantly amazes me is how jam packed each episode is. I haven't read very many spoilers about season two, but I immediately made the connection between the blonde-haired guy in the opening sequence and the runner in Jack's flashback. I talked to my mom on the phone afterwards, and neither her or my dad suspected that twist. However, she pointed out to me that the woman in Jack's flashback was Sarah, something I didn't pick up on at all (and the episode that centered on their marriage was on the few mid-season episodes I watched). I was really touched by the final flashback, but I should have seen it coming had I put two and two together.

Ok, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this yet...but I am pretty sure that the older guy who died in the er after the crash with Sarah was Shannon's father, and Boone's stepfather. Jack referred to him as "Mr. Rutherford".

Also, Danielle's child was a girl named Alex, so no, this wouldn't be her child (unless those shots that Desmond is taking have something to do with a sex change operation that also made him older)

Yeah, it's a daughter. Alex was mentioned the first time in "Solitary" and Rosseau only tells Sayid while they are in the jungle that, "Alex was my child."

It isn't until the finale that Alex is mentioned again, and Rousseau reveals the gender at that point:

DANIELLE ROUSSEAU: At that time, I was already seven months pregnant. I delivered the infant myself. The baby and I were together for only one week when I saw black smoke. A pillar of black smoke five kilometers inland. That night ... they came. They came ... and took her. Alex. They took my baby. Transcripts.

Boone Carlisle and Shannon Rutherford had different fathers.

Did the car accident death of "Mr. Rutherford" allow widow Rutherford, she with young daughter Shannon, to marry a "Mr. Carlisle," with whom she had a son, Boone? Weren't Boone and Shannon step-siblings, not half siblings?

One thing for certain: the name of the accident victim was written into the show to provoke just these sort of questions.

Not that they'll provide any ANSWERS!

No, they weren't half siblings: Shannon's mother married Boone's father, so there was no biological connection. I think Mommy's hypothesis is spot on with the dying man in the ER being Shannon's father, "Mr. Rutherford" thus enabling further story entwining.

And, if they were half brother/sister...ewwwww! Too icky for Lost writers...

I really liked the first episode. Well, I loved the way it started, before the opening credits, but it just didn't have the same feel as the first season to me. I didn't like having to wait to hear about the raft people, and I didn't like how everything focused solely on the hatch, to the exclusion of every other story line.

There was a hint of one with Shannon's need to find Victor, and another hint at one other with Sayid's disapproval of Charlie's remarks about Rousseau, but they didn't go anywhere. Then, on top of that, there was a whole lot of standing around the hatch that could have been cut, as it seemed to drag a bit.

I really enjoyed it though, and I am hoping it gets back on track next week with a more complex plotline for each episode (as I am sure it probably will). I would have preferred more story in this episode and a little less "Destination Lost" pre-show stuff.

Speaking of the re-cap, I wasn't that fond of it. One of the things that impressed me about the pilot epsode originally was that it didn't start off with the grand crash, but rather we got the story piecemeal in flashbacks. It was a little blah to see it all in such a linear, sequential fashion, but I guess that's okay since they were tyring to catch up the newer viewers. People tuning in for the first time, though, would miss out on the subtlety that made this show so infinitely watchable the first go around.

I guess this just goes to show that you can't please everyone. Rhyn, I don't know if you were around these boards during the first season but in case you weren't...one complaint was that we were left in the dark as to what was in the hatch. At least we finally got to see what was in the hatch and now we have many more questions than we had answers which has become a staple for this show.

Then, on top of that, there was a whole lot of standing around the hatch that could have been cut, as it seemed to drag a bit.

When was there a whole lot of standing around the hatch? I thought the story line of what was in the hatch moved fairly quickly with tons of suspense...another staple for this show.

I would have preferred more story in this episode and a little less "Destination Lost" pre-show stuff.

I think this was one of the very few episodes that the plot lines advanced at a quick pace. There were new characters introduced and people here have already picked up many directions this thing can go.

For instance:
The guy in the hatch has a previous connection with Jack.
The complete story of how Jack fixed Sarah has been wrapped up.
Sarah apparently killed Shannon's dad (or at least a relative).

It was a little blah to see it all in such a linear, sequential fashion, but I guess that's okay since they were tyring to catch up the newer viewers.

I really have to disagree with you here...Sorry you seem to be disappointed with what I thought was one of the best episodes in this series. I am not a newer viewer and I didn't see it as those were catered to at all.

I have a feeling that season 2 is going to go in totally different directions than season 1 and with that also goes a lot of tied up story lines which I think we are seeing here.

However, I am really happy with the way things went last night and I look forward to seeing what happens next!

I pretty much agree with everything you wrote vols, but I just wanted to point out that Rhyn's above quote was in reference to Destination: Lost, not the first episode, and I think it's a valid complaint about the recrap.

47. "RE: Lost Season 2 Episode 1 Discussion"
Oh, please don't misunderstand! I loved the first show, and I know that it's been about 15 episodes since they first found the hatch. I was dying for this episode, too, and like I said, I especially loved the way the show started: all the close-ups on the power-driven things the man used to start his day, which all seemed fairly normal and mundane; his shot in the arm that was a "Whoa, what was that?" moment; the explosion that rocked him and sent him flying immediately into a defensive posture. Very startling and well-produced. I loved it.

Then we were subjected to Jack's rather irrational and out of character challenge of Locke for the next 44 minutes. I know they don't see eye to eye, and that their struggle might possible represent a major, major theme in the whole series (man of science, man of faith) but it seem like a deus ex machine to have Jack (in the season one finale) say "We're going to have a Locke problem" and then in this episode, to directly challenge everything Locke suggests, only to jump into the hatch later in the same episode. It just wasn't... I don't know what word I am looking for, but the whole thing just felt contrived. (Jack has trusted in the wisdom Locke has shown in the past and has even deferred to Locke in some situations, so why is everything now a direct challenge?)

Admittedly, though, while I like Jack's character, I am not overly fond of Matthew Fox's acting, so perhaps I just wasn't "sold" on his performance. When he was off camera (or oddly, in his flashbacks) I didn't feel as deflated. So, perhaps my reaction is just a personal bias against Fox. (I was dying for more Sayid, Charlie, Sawyer, and Sun.) I recognize that I am likely letting this bias color my perception of this episode, but this is still the best-produced, most suspenseful, most dramatic, most cleverly funny, and infintely watchable show on television.

I understand the importance of having a hatch-centric episode, and that didn't bother me. The execution of it did, a tiny bit. I still loved this episode, but I have to admit, it's next week's episode that I am most dying to see.

The guy in the hatch has a previous connection with Jack.
...
Sarah apparently killed Shannon's dad (or at least a relative).

The many pre-existing connections between everyone are so intriguing. (And, I was thrilled that two more were revealed in this episode.) Hurley has a lot of connections with other characters, and so does Sawyer. I love that. Is there a post on this board that talks about all the many connections?

(I was dying for more Sayid, Charlie, Sawyer, and Sun.)

I understand what you are saying here but until they entered the hatch there really isn't any way for them to progress these characters IMHO. Also, take notice that lastnight's episode was only a couple of hours during the same night as the finale. I think that shows us how the writers had to round up some story lines before moving forward.

Sayid, Charlie and Sun really didn't have story lines that demanded more attention by the writers than forwarding the hatch story line.

Sawyer did have a pressing story line however I feel that we will find out what happened to the people on the raft when the sun rises. Rather than show them struggling in the water we are going to find out where they was ashore.

40. "RE: Lost Season 2 Episode 1 Discussion"
Just a few quick thoughts. In an interview with Josh H after last season he made a point of stating that 2 of the "Others" on the boat were identical "Twins". Is it possible that the Desmond Jack met before was a different "version" of Desmond. The reason I say that is that the quarantine sign was on the inside of the hatch door, as if to keep whoever is in the hatch from going out, and after the explosion Desmond was very careful to not get close to the opening. That would explain the older versions of technology in the underground bunker. As if "Desmond" has been there for quite a few years. In my opinion he looked terrified at seeing these people from the Outside. Also there were more than one bunk when he woke up. My guess is that there is more than one person livving in the bunker, and were at some point convinced that the outside was a dangerous and deadly place. Now why this was done to them, I haven't any idea, except to maybe extract DNA and make replicas of them???? Also. any ideas what he was injecting himself with? My husbands first thoughts were steriods, but I am not sure why that would be, since i am unfamiliar with the effect of steriods other than big muscles. Sigh, oh the questions that this series creates!!!

Parksmom

PS During the first season my DH also mentioned that it appeared that in one of the Claire attacks by the Others it seemed that they were trying to put a needle in Claires stomache, as though to obtain amniotic fluid which is rich in chromosones and DNA, hence the cloning theory.

My wife and I rewound and yes, the Numbers were on all the vials.

So here's the deal.

Delenne..err..Danielle mentioned that the people she came to the island with all got sick.

Desmond is obviously infected with something that he takes a vaccine to keep him alive.

Also he is in Quarantine.

Looks like the bug is loose!

Lucky that Desmond has a lot of vaccine!

Also, if we can trust what Desmond told Jack (that's a big IF), we can see that he's getting in shape for a "race" around the world. Hmmm... isn't the island around the other side of the world from LA, roughly? Next, notice that Desmond's lodgings look military. Race? Military? Vinyl Records - 1970's. Cold War. Bio-warfare. Also nice arsenal.

Notice Desmond open a safe? The last number he turned to was 42. Can you guess the rest of the combo?

When Desmond gave Jack the bit of advice "Hold up or Raise it or something like that (can't quite remember what exactly he said) and then when Jack looked at him questioningly he said "the ankle". Was he really talking about the ankle or something that was going to happen in the future? Also, when he went to leave he said, and again I paraphrase, "See you in the another life, brother."

What think you?

My hubby and I absolutely LOVED the opener! It was so funny, about 1/2 way through the opening he turns to me and says "What is this a commercial for?" I was like "this is the opening!" It was done so well. Loved it!

We weren't observant enough to catch that the numbers were on the vials. Here I thought he was taking steroids (you know, working out, eating a healthy shake and all, boy was I off!) Anyway, we were both pretty upset that we didn't see anything at all about the people on the raft. Really want to see Walt's dad bite the dust (don't like him) but really want Sawyer and Kim to make it...

Boy, a lot of great theories rolling out there. Anyone wanna bet we'll have more questions instead of answers by the end of this season???

I have a far-fetched theory-

In the season one finale, the "invisible" monster was dragging Locke along the ground. There is an audible clicking sound which I took as a big clue that a ratchet was being cranked to pull him along.

In the season two opener, Jack encounters what must be some kind of industrial (Possibly electrical) magnet that pulled the key around his neck away from his body.

So, crazy me has but the two together- Could a giant magnetic force "invisibly" pull people along somehow? Maybe even throw them into the air? (like the pilot)?

I am going to rewatch the episode sometime today but I think I noticed the same clicking noise when Locke was lowering Kate into the hatch. Did anyone else catch this?

I'm not getting it.

Jack's wedding was what like 5 yrs ago maybe?
Sarah's accident was 10 yrs ago tops.
Jack meets "Desmond" at the stadium.

Danielle is on the island for 16 yrs.
"Desmond" looks like he has been in the hatch since the 70's or early 80's. How did he meet Jack?

Why was there a bunk bed in the hatch? Who else lives there? Is this where ( I'm drawing a blank on his name) Tom Cruise's cousin's character, is there where he disappeared to?
Was Locke in the same crash that killed Shannon's Dad and is that how he got paralyzed?
So many question s I have.

Can anyone confirm that the guy shown at the start of the episode is indeed Desmond? I got the impression the first guy was younger than what Desmond was portrayed at the end of the episode. Hairy too. I'm thinking they are two different guys.

I didn't tape the episode so I can't go back and compare.

Keep in mind that the scene at the stadium would have been years ago (I am a little confused on the exact timeline) but wouldn't it be somewhere from 5-10 years ago?

I am almost for certain it was the same actor but I have it taped and look back.

74. "Not the stadium scene"
I'm not talking about the scene in the stadium, Doc. I'm talking about the intro scene (thanks Dweeze) where we see the guy in the hatch waking up, exercising, doing laundry, making ookey raw egg drink in the blender, and listening to a Mama Cass album. The same guy who is startled by the explosion at the hatch and who grabs the gun and peeks through the mirror contraption and who the camera leaves and follows up the corridor to where we see Locke and Jack looking down the hatch.

That is the guy I'm talking about. He seemed younger than the guy (Desmond?) at the end of the episode who holds Locke at gunpoint.

My question ..... can anyone tell if the guy holding Locke at gunpoint is the same guy from the opening sequence? I think they are two different guys. Can anyone tell if they are the same person? Is the hair the same? Desmond looked like he had a beard. Does it look like the raw egg guy has a beard?

ACK! Why, oh why, didn't I tape this stupid show last night?????

I really hope it isn't clones... But if it is, this could support it. I read this here: www.lost-media.com/

Go to www.oceanicflight815.com. There is a little bar code on the bottom. Click on it and type: theislandiswaiting
No spaces. You'll get a script page (certainly fake since it had nothing to do with last night's episode).

Last lines, about Jack: "until his eyes focus on the face staring back at him. HIS OWN." Handwritten is then "Can Jack #2 look @ Jack #1 and say something like 'I am Jack.'?"

81. "RE: Lost Season 2 Episode 1 Discussion"
Why is it light outside the windows of the hatch? When Kate, Locke and Jack went down the hatch it was still very dark out (3 hours to sunlight), but the two windows we see in the hatch appear to have light behind them. If it's not daylight, what is beyond the living quarters of the hatch that uses such bright lights? The scene we saw appeared to be the guy waking up to start his day, which is why I automatically assumed we were seeing sunlight.

And while most of the things we saw in the hatch appeared dated, some things looked current to me - the washer and dryer, the Tide and Downy on top of them, the dishes, the dish detergent... They don't look like they are of the same era as most of the gadgets he has. How are his supplies being refilled?

Does anyone think we can start a thread just for what's in the hatch and the questions we have about it?

I really don't think that was "true" sunlight. I think it was artificial in some way. I mean, the hatch is underground. How would it have windows that let in sunlight?

How do you explain the front loading washer? Where'd he get all that food? The sunlight could be fake to make you think you're just waking up in the morning.

I'm beginning to accept the theory about the clones. Could it be all those stranded passengers are being cloned and released back into society for some cosmic or sadistic government experience? I keep thinking X-Files for some reason, conspiracy theories, etc.

Then Hurley comes into play. Could it be that the person who kept mumbling those numbers to him actually be NOT crazy at all? Maybe the crazy person knew about it, but it or someone else drove him crazy and got him committed?

So so so many questions!

I agree it was false sunlight. It did appear that the man in the hatch was just starting his day. His day must be different to island time. One of the things that he does reacting to the blowing of the hatch is switching off the lights.

I was very interested with his response to the explosion. It was very automatic. No question like what was that or what damage was done, but right to the weapons. Then right to the switches, most likely to activate the surveillance system, and all steps in a planned and often practiced routine.

Maybe some clue as to his background or why he is there.

I'm pretty sure the computer Desmond was using at the begining of the episode was an Apple IIe. They were state of the art around 1982. That gives us a ballpark as to when the bunker was constructed.
