BUT I HIGHLY DOUBT THEY WILL BE GETTING THAT BED IF POPPA GETS HIS WAY, AS HE ALWAYS DOES, AND I DOUBT THEY WILL GET THE SONS THEIR OWN BEDS IN SEPARATE ROOMS, OR DO ANY OF THE OTHER STUFF VICKI WANTED THEM TO DO WITH THE MONEY, EXCEPT UPGRADE THE RENTAL UNITS WITH $20,000.00. > >Glad to see eldest boy is >going to venture out. I KNOW. BUT IF POPS HAS HIS WAY, AGAIN, I THINK THAT URGE THE SON HAS TO "SPREAD HIS WINGS" WILL BE DOUSED BY POPPA. REMEMBER -- POPPA THINKS THEY ARE TOO YOUNG TO GO OUT ON THEIR OWN, AS HE SAYS -- "EVEN AT 28, 38, OR EVEN 48 -- THAT IS STILL TO YOUNG TO LEAVE."

Great comments and I agree Poppa will probably hold on tight and brain wash the boy to stay at home. But could you turn off your all caps? My ears hurt now.Thanks. Just so everyone understands that last part, typing in all caps is deemed as yelling on most message boards. Thankyou.

Okay, I am half way through and I have a sick feeling just watching Cult family. I read their website and their "explanations" regarding their Taoist beliefs, etc and I just don't buy it. I have seen some wierd sh*t living in the Bay Area but this family is the most disturbing I have ever witnessed. The boys are teenagers entering middle age. They walk around with WORRY just lining their faces, they are set in their ways, fearful and judgemental about anything new or different. There was NOT one single person their age at their "party". It was SAD. Apparently since Pop Pop had lived life and found nothing great he assumes that no one else would or should want to either. Control much there papa? Of course he mentions none of his methods of mind effin on his website. I wonder if that would affect his tax status as a religion if he discusses brainwashing techniques. His wife had never had a birthday? WTF? The woman is no more than 40 and looks 60. I was glad the kids pulled back and cooperated with Dad regarding treating her better. She needed it. While Miss Vickie needs to shut up for 5 minutes.. her home is immaculate, her husband is a kind man and they have great parties! While her kids seem a little hyper its clear they have personality... Cult kids not so much.

His wife had never had a birthday? WTF? >>I KNOW! THE WAY SHE RESPONDED WHEN THEY CELEBRATED HER B-DAY, STARTING WITH THE MANICURE, ETC -- I FELT LIKE AT HER HOUSE, THERE PROBABLY IS NO JOY (OR VERY LITTLE). HOW COULD YOU NOT CELEBRATE A B-DAY? I KNOW PEOPLE WHO TAKE THE DAY OFF, AND TREAT A B-DAY LIKE A LEGAL HOLIDAY! <<The woman is no more than 40 and looks 60.>> ARE YOU SERIOUS? HOW OLD IS SHE? DO YOU KNOW FOR SURE SHE'S NO MORE THAN 40 YRS OLD? I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! I AM OLDER THAN THAT, AND I DON'T LOOK LIKE SHE DOES! <<While Miss Vickie needs to shut up for 5 minutes..>> I DON'T THINK SHE TALKED TOO MUCH AT ALL. SHE WAS NEVER BORING AND HAD INTERESTING AND AMUSING THINGS TO SAY. I LIVE IN NYC, AND SHE WOULD FIT RIGHT IN OVER HERE. I DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE, BUT MAYBE IT'S A REGIONAL THING, HOW YOU CONSIDER PEOPLE TALKING OR BEING QUIET. THE IDEA OF SOMEONE TALKING TO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE REALLY IS SUBJECTIVE. WHEN I AM AROUND SOMEONE WHO TALKS VEEEEERRRRRY SLOOOOOWLY, AND HAS NOTHING FUNNY OR INTERESTING TO SAY, THEN TWO WORDS IS TOO MUCH, AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED. I THINK THAT POPPA AND HIS SONS TALKED WAY TOO MUCH, BECAUSE TO ME THEY WERE BOOOOORING. PARTICULARLY POPPA, WHO ACTED LIKE EVERY WORD OUT OF HIS MOUTH WAS A PEARL OF WISDOM. SNOOOOORE. << her home is immaculate, her husband is a kind man and they have great parties!>> I AGREE!!! I WANT MY NEXT BIRTHDAY PARTY TO BE THROWN BY THE LOWES!!!! :0) << While her kids seem a little hyper>> AGAIN, THAT IS SUBJECTIVE, AND PROBABLY A REGIONAL THING, BECAUSE HERE IN NYC, THE WAY THEY ACTED WOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED A LITTLE HYPER. THEY WOULD FIT RIGHT IN, IN MY NECK OF THE WOODS. <<its clear they have personality... Cult kids not so much.>> I AGREE. THE LOWE FAMILY SEEMED TO BE FULL OF LOVE AND FUN AND LAUGHS AND UNDERSTANDING. THEY ALL SEEMED TO BE FRIENDS, ASWELL AS RELATIVES. I DIDN'T SEE ANY OF THAT IN REGARD TO THE ABBOTTS.

LAST EDITED ON 12-13-04 AT 11:48 PM (EST)LAST EDITED ON 12-13-04 AT 11:46 PM (EST) I think I missed the VERY end because my Tivo stopped in mid sentence. Did they show any changes that happened after the show? I was so hoping there would be some! I wonder if there is any way the show has to enforce the money spending rules of the other mother? I wonder about child protective services? I know they have to be so careful not to infringe on religious freedom...but... These children never went to regular school right??? And I'll bet any "home schooling" was sub-standard. The shoes thing might concern them to a lesser extent but it might be a health concern. Speaking of health...have they ever gotten any kind of immunizations or check ups??? I hate to think I'm overreacting but it just seems so harmful. Pop's just decided that he doesn't like the world so his kids don't need to bother with it at all. He also feels sad for not being there for his brother and wants to make sure that never happens again. He is VERY afraid of being alone but that is a sickness not a religion.

I will reprint the web adresses of those interested in reading the Abbots rebuttal to the show..www.playingbyear.com is their personal site and ...www.centertao.org is their "church".... I was geniunely uncomfortable with this series.. the father and his bizzare and unitelligible logic explaining why he is afraid of the children leaving... reminded me of the Love family of the Northwest years ago. Poor Steve Allen spent thousands trying to get his son to leave that cult. This has similiar leanings only just smaller and more pitiful. As far as CPS intervening... the one child is 18 and the other is 14, there is no obvious signs of abuse and while that may be debatable to us, its not physical and that is what is used to measure removal. As for home schooling it has no standard here that requires them to have a specific course or curriculum so while their education may be "substandard" there is nothing they are doing that is illegal. They may well be wierd but its not illegal in California to walk around without shoes.. only in restaurants and food sales facilities and I highly doubt other than being asked to leave its ever enforced. The only good thing is that perhaps the eldest son will explore life a little but reading his website I think that may have passed.

AprilleW your last sentence about fear of being alone is not a religion, but a sickness, hit the nail on the head. Apparently some very, very bad things happened to him in his trek around the world, things that scare him to this day. I'm sure he feels that living a simple life with family close around is healing for his memories, and it probably is. HOWEVER........His sons are not him! They don't need to trek barefoot through jungles, deserts, and forests. They just need to learn how to navigate life in California. That would be a nice start, and might suffice. At least with a college education and career, maybe they wouldn't be stranded in Thailand if someone died. Mr. Abbott, the only two things we can give our children are roots and wings. It seems you've done a great job on the roots. In a lot of ways, your sons are much more mature than a lot of others their age. Now, for the wings. Trust yourself, and trust them. Having said all that, I think tonight's episode should win a "Reality TV Award" or even an Emmy. It hit on so many levels beyond the mere superficial. Great job!

I guess that we know now why the Abbotts did the show. So that they could get their mitts on the $50,000 and hawk their ideology and sell stuff on the "oh so Taoist" www. I haven't seen such innocence since Abby Hoffman's heyday.

I think I found this episode a little boring. I like the way Wife Swap does it all in one episode. I think the 2-part Trading Spouses is starting to drag on. And I wish they would show updates about if they use the money properly. And if they refuse do they not receive the money? California father did not want to do what most of the money was put aside for. I wonder if they still got the money. Personally I think California father should never have had children. If he is so worried he should have not brought anyone into this world. But to bring children into the world and then shove all your fears on them is wrong. He got to do all the travelling and now he doesn't want anyone in his family to experience anything. Strange.
