In the last episode, the woman wasn't even the man's wife. So, now we're equating shack-ups with real wives? If you want to have a show called Concubine Swap, then have a show called Concubine Swap. But don't you dare try to equate mere shack-up girlfriends with bonofide wives.

I agree with the point of shannwa's post,if the show's called Trading Spouse's or Wife Swap then the participates should be a spouse/wife. I mean isn't that what the show's about?

a common law wife is a wife - with the same entitlements and protections. At least in my state.

I stand corrected then. I admit that I am am very conservative in the area of marriage. I don't really understand the common wife arrangement-pros,cons,why not just get legally married? I grew up in a conservative state and live in one now so I have never known anyone who was a common law.

I guess I should have been more straightforward with my post. I just found the way the initial poster denigrated the parents' lack of a marriage certificate sort of offensive. Common law is recognized here in Texas - but the point I was trying to get across is that I don't think that mother was somehow inferior just because they weren't married. That was the clear inference from the first post. I should have just addressed it as such. Yes, the show is called Wife Swap - but the rules on the application do not require that the couple are "married". I think this couple seemed rather devoted to themselves and their children. I know many people who have long-time partnerships without the benefit of marriage. Take Sharon Rocha and Ron Grantski for example - Sharon is the mother of Laci Peterson. The two of them have been together since Laci was two but chose not to marry. I don't think the lack of a formal ceremony makes them less valid of a couple or lessens their commitment to each other or Sharon's children. My aunt and her boyfriend lived together for over twenty five years without being married. They weren't inferior parents because of it. Being husband and wife doesn't validate or elevate a couple's relationship - at least in my mind. Don't get me wrong - that couple had their freaky points regardless of their marital status. If I remember correctly, they lived in filth. If someone wants to question their abilities as parents or their relationship - hey, there's lots of material there. I don't think the lack of a marriage certificate was the source of their problems.

I know vols. It's not even the same show. This is about wife swap. The couple from Trading Spouses last night was married. The couple on wife swap was not. Both were from California - that's the only commonality.

LAST EDITED ON 12-01-04 AT 01:21 PM (EST)Never mind. Thought we were talking Wife Swap. Does a "Spouse" need to be a wife? (if we ARE going to debate the semantical legitimacy of the trade)
