"Lenny had a good idea."
I liked Lenny's ad way better than the other boring ad. It was more creative and interesting. Is there anyone else who thinks the same?
I don't know what's Trump got against him!

I thought Lenny's idea was great! Just that the execution of the commercial was sort of lame. I was envisioning something else when he the castaway was mentioned and it just did not match what the final product was. Perhaps they didn't have all of the props etc to make the commercial look better, but really, it was a great idea, originally.

LAST EDITED ON 03-28-06 AT 07:06 AM (EST)

Trump has always been an a$$ and a walking contradiction. Lenny's idea wasn't terrible -- the execution was. The whole team rallied & agreed on the idea & Dan was right not to bring Lenny in for that reason.

Also, Trump didn't give any credit to Lenny for trying to get Tarek off his stupid subtitle idea. Most of the team knew the subtitles were bad & a couple of them told Trump that Lenny tried to get them to do a voiceover, but Tarek got "hateful" and wouldn't listen. So, Lenny gets no credit for that?

ETA: Also, the cruise guys said it was a close call between the two teams, who went about the commercial in similar ways -- shock value in the beginning & "cruise montage." They said the difference was the voiceover vs. subtitles. This was all Tarek and also Dan for siding with Tarek.

Trump's ego always gets in the way of his "firings" on this show. Tarek should've been fired, he's deserved it since the beginning. Worse than his idiotic mistakes and poor ideas is Tarek's inability to accept other's suggestions. I think Trump is keeping Tarek around, because he has as much of an over-inflated ego as Trump has.

There were only 2 people that deserved to be fired: Dan for poor leadership & his co-leading with Tarek and TAREK for being a closed-minded, egotist without any common sense. The team told Trump Tarek is bad for their team, yet Trump is giving him a FOURTH chance? Yet Trump had no problems firing Brent for bringing his team down.

I was surprised that Trump trashed Lenny the way he did. It seemed that Lenny had a favorable edit -- taking action (or trying to), putting out ideas. Lenny is rough around the edges (but HILARIOUS & I agree the most fun apprenti to watch this season), but at least Lenny works hard & makes himself heard.

I wonder if Lenny is going to be team leader next week. With Tarek on the team, Lenny is probably going down in flames.

Sorry, but as much as I dislike Donald, I agree that commercials for ships shouldn't begin with somebody stranded due to a shipwreck. It's kinda like how nobody in their right mind wants to watch "The Titanic" while on a cruise! Still, I get a big kick out of Lenny (and I have laughed my butt off over "The Lenny"'s postings on the BTA thread!), and would like to see him as PM next time and watch him kick the Menski outta Tarek.

I agree - shipwreck image bad bad marketing idea for a ship...it keeps reminding me of another similar project in a previous year but I can't remember which one - where the idea itself was just despised by the judges...(anyone?)

I was kind of in the camp of let Lenny past as the team did all embrace his idea - I thought it was mature of Dan to take it on the chin for the team decision, but he didn't defend it well on that basis. He could teach Trump a lesson in leadership that when a team agrees to a decision, good or bad, it's a team victory or failure...would make people a lot less hesitant in brainstorming. That said, I find Lenny pretty caustic and bitter. The whole harping on Tarek being in Mensa is getting tired too...his problem seems to be inexperience more than anything else.

Lenny's idea was not good at all. If that commercial was on t.v today without ever being on the Apprentice, no one would understand what the castaway has to do with the cruise line. Saying that the castaway was "confined" on the raft made no sense in trying to sell a "freestyle" cruise. Of course the castaway was confined - he was on a raft. He doesn't care that he can eat when he wants. He is just glad he can eat. The whole concept was dumb.

I am sorry but a Castaway does not necessarily mean a person was shipwrecked. Did you see the movie Castaway? He had a creative idea. It just was not executed properly. For one thing it could've been more HUMOROUS. The castaway for example could not of been a castaway very long because he had no face stuble. The executives did not even understand that the guy was supposed to be a castaway. The castaway should've looked like Tom Hanks did and hey maybe throw in a volleyball. All they had to do is show a Castaway (looking like Tom Hanks) floating on a raft with a volleyball. On the ship, the castaway could've been dining with a volleyball or laying out by the pool with one....anything....maybe my idea is stupid but there was a lot of potential here. Actually, it wasn't just Lenny's idea. I remember Lee saying 'Hey everyone listen to Lenny. He has got a great idea'. Then everyone in the room said 'Hey Lenny, great idea'. It was in the execution that it fell apart. And I forgot the lack of a voice over.

Actually, to call the idea dumb. It was no dumber than showing a couple for two seconds having a boring time at a table.

Well I never said the other team's idea was good either. Both were dumb in my opinion. However, Gold Rush's idea (notice I'm not saying Lenny's)just didn't make sense considering anyone that was floating on a raft or whatever in the middle of the ocean would be glad if just a fishing boat picked them up. They would not be worried about whether they were confined to a schedule or not. They would be glad to be out of the sun, drink fresh water, eat food, lay on a soft bed. Get my point?

Yes of course they would enjoy that on a freestyle cruise but also a regular cruise, a fishing boat, a freight carrier, WHATEVER else picks them up. They may not be fed filet mignon but if you've been floating for a couple of days, you'd be happy eating a piece of beef jerkey.

The point of the commercial was to distinguish the Freestyle cruise from all the others. Please tell me where Gold Rush's commercial did that and what role the "castaway" played in conveying that message.

I think Lenny had a great idea. It was clever and I thought funny. It was just executed poorly.

Ok, was it just me or did Donald pretty much say without saying it that he shouldn't bring Lenny to the boardroom because it wasn't really his fault? I mean, he really didn't point to Lenny at all until the final boardroom.

Also, why did Donald state that their idea "Stunk" and that the Execs at the CruiseLines hated it? Ummm, I didn't see that anywhere. They actually liked the commercial but thought the other team did better. In past seasons Execs have had no problem telling Donald that one team was better than another and that one team totally hit the mark (the porno commercial?) Why did he have to go all crazy about how bad the idea was when even the Execs didn't think it was a bad idea?

P.S. Is it just me or does DT shout all the time? Every word that comes out of his mouth is loud. Does he know how to talk like a normal person?

I agree Padme. It's not like this was the Cucumber Commericial or the guy washing himself with soap as he was running a race. Niether commerical was that bad considering that not of these contestents had probably ever made a commericial before. Sure one commericial is better than the other but as you said it wasn't that big of a difference by either....and the execs said they liked both.

I also liked Lenny's idea, and feel it could have been saved for one thing. If they had gone with a voice over, like Lenny had wanted, all they had to do was say something like...

"Longing to be rescued from a boring, structured cruise?" That one line, (or similar) would have saved the spot.

Good voice over suggestion! That definitely would have tied the whole castaway idea into the commercial. Having the text really made it confusing especially the first one "Welcome Anytime". That kind of made it seem like anyone could come on board the ship.

I also liked the idea initially when Lenny came up with it. I could very easily picture it in my head and if properly executed, it would have been funny (yes, Wilson would've been a nice tough as well ) I was SHOCKED that Trump was sooo harsh on Lenny, very unexpected. But I think he just wanted to see how Lenny handles criticism or stress. I wish Tarek woulda gone though instead of Dan. Or both!

I think both were outstanding if you think about it. None of these people probably ever created and ad. And they had to do it all in one day...that includes editing. Considering that...they were great. Just compare them to the ads for the soap product...both of those ads were cridge-worthy. They were so bad that the client could not say there was a winner. I always like to think I would do good on this show, but creating an ad in one day would scare the heck out of me. This ads were almost tv ready...just a little tweaking and they were not that far off.

There wasn't even a bit of creativity there, both ads were extremely old-fashioned (not in a good way), they wouldn't have even passed at the lousiest advertising company.

I don't have TIVO, but didn't Donald say that the most ORIGINAL ad would be rewarded?
Gold Rush IMO was more original and creative, but the execution was TERRIBLE. Didn't anyone watch last season where one team lost the challenge because of text and no voice over? SHEESH. Good on Dan for sticking to his guns about not bringing Lenny in. Nothing will kill morale and creativity faster than people feeling they are muzzled in the brain storming session.

Great suggestions BTW of Wilson and the opening sentence

Lenny's idea could have been a winner if properly executed. However, there's no way such idea can be clearly launched in 30 seconds. You need just that much to show the shipwreck angle then transition into a scene where the cruise liner rescues him and treats him to all the fun things on board.

No way, not even giants like P&G can do it in 30 secs. Lenny's idea would be a better fit for an infommercial.

25. "RE: Lenny had a good idea."
The Apprentice is the same as always. Two teams are asked to come up with ideas, which they both do, then some subjective judge decides which idea they like best. The team that didn't come up with the idea that was liked better is herded into the boardroom where they are told how much their idea "stunk."
Look, just because one idea is better than another doesn't mean the other idea wasn't creative or "stunk."The losing team is always treated worse than they deserve.
Lenny's idea was clearly the more creative one. However, the execution is just as important as the idea, and the beginning of their ad wasn't executed very well. Synergy went with an easy concept and pulled it off well. Their final product was better.
There are arguments for and against a voice-over, as Tarek suggested. The executives pointed out that if you aren't paying attention, then you can still hear the voice-over. Yeah, except that goes both ways. What if you are watching but not really listening to the ad? What if you are in a bar or restuarant and just can't hear the volume? Then the text would be a lot more useful and the voice-over would be useless.
Personally, I like Tarek. He has been upfront with his ideas and not hiding back, hoping to avoid the flack. Nothing has happened to prove anything about his IQ. He is just a victim of his own foolish announcement. A genius wouldn't tell everyone he's a genius any more than a pro poker player would tell everyone he has a pair of aces in the hole. I am in more exclusive company by being a Wisconsin resident than he is by announcing he is in the top 2% in the world for IQ. 2% of the world population is A LOT of fricking people.

"A genius
>wouldn't tell everyone he's a
>genius any more than a
>pro poker player would tell
>everyone he has a pair

So you believe Tarek NOT a genius?

I think Tarek problaby is Mensa, but is too caught up in "KNOWING" the right answer that he is not open to other possiblities. Not a good quality for a top executive. And with all due respect, claiming to be the top percent in IQ is a lot different than being a resident of Wisconsin.

"And with all due respect, claiming to be the top percent in IQ is a lot different than being a resident of Wisconsin."

True. But my point is that being in the top 2% in the world for IQ is NOT an exclusive club.
I'm sure Tarek's IQ is over 140; technically, that allows him to be a member of Mensa, and that is also the number that is "officially" considered the beginning of genius. Even the smartest people say stupid things though, and announcing to everyone you're a genius is NOT a smart move, especially when you are in a group with a bunch of other smart, egotistic, people. When people see someone on a pedestal, they automatically want to knock them off. Did he say his IQ? I am guessing around 146. Someone over 160 would not have made that mistake.

Which idea are you referring to?

There was the shipwreck idea and there was Lenny's JINGLE idea which was....NOT!

If you are referring to the shipwreck....umm, at first I thought it was but then again, an idea has to catch on big in the first seconds and obviously, it didn't with the people who mattered the most. Advertising is such an incredibly difficult field. I HATE MOST COMMERCIALS and write my share of nasty letters to companies telling them to please stop assaulting me in my own living room. Some ads are SO ghastly! Some can be downright painful. You get hit constantly.

That idea missed...the boat.
