She was probably a victim of violence during her escorting and possibly threatened after the fact as well. The use of drugs also entered my mind as one thing hinted at. She kept saying she was having flashbacks of incidents that happened while being an escort. It had to do with being beaten up by her johns. Sharing an experience that happened with Iyanla. So, without saying it (numbing herself), I do believe because of those experiences she used drugs to numb those feelings of fear. I was an abused wife in my first marriage. That was in 1982 and to this day I still have flashbacks. They aren't fun especially when it comes to me in a dream and wake up sweaty and as if it just happened. Luckily I have a wonderful husband that understands. The flashbacks don't happen as much as they use to but every once in a while one or two will pop up. Her story is so shocking, what that girl put herself and son through is unbelievable. I thought she would end up leaving, or get kicked off the show. Christina was so rude and defensive. I remember when Dr. Stan came for dinner that Lisa was hosting and after dinner Christina was to show her picture story about how she went from smelling magnolias to dancing on a pole, when Dr.Stan asked her something she replied "well duhhh!!" and rolled her eyes, that's when I realized how immature she was. I don't think being an escort constitutes being mature or getting mature because of that experience. If anything I feel, it hindered her growth. It was a child acting like an adult. I dated a man 18 years older than me when I was 24. It didn't make me more mature. I actually become dependent on him because of HIS maturity, but mine got stifled through the process of having an older man control me due to my age and he knew he could. I came out of that relationship less mature because I become so dependent on him. Also, that relationship made me question myself on a constant basis. I truly believe I was "acting mature," but I wasn't. I just wanted to grow up to quick. I really feel for Christine the 2nd time around watching it. This generation I feel, is immature. Iyanla was told. We were not. We watched for some info. none was given. I agree, her story is shocking. I could never fully absorb it. The fact that info. was missing in this epy. makes it more difficult to understand. Iyanla wanted to know where the money went ( an age old question for most of us ) and so did we. Christina seemed to have an answer, it was private. I hope she has resolved it. If it was private , I don't want to know, it must be sad. She explained that the john had put the money on a nightstand, then when she went to the bathroom he took it back and made her look like she took the money and wanted more. She hit him, he hit her, she ran out the room and he chased her. She thought he was going to hurt her. She was very afraid. She also explained that was a mild example. After that she started numbing herself. The only thing that wasn't explained was what she was numbing herself with. She also stated that with all the money she was making she just blew it on thing she wanted because she knew more would come. She stated she has flashbacks of the violence that took place. She wanted the flashbacks to go away. She was ashamed and was afraid to tell the other houseguest and anyone else for that matter. I know that feeling all to well. I see Christina in a different light this time around. Hell she is only 20 years old. Tho she may have had an "adult job/experience." She is still so young. A job like that hardens you. At 20 years old, you are able to have been driving a car for four years, graduating/ed from high school, can get married, vote, (not that I'm advocating this, but)can also buy cigarettes legally, (I hate cigs.)-- join the military, and fight in a war, and USED TO be able to drink legally in the USA. oh. and legally be a stripper. So, 20 years old is young, but it's not THAT young. I don't have the same amount of forgiveness based on age. I think that discredits the 20 year olds in the world that make better choices than Christina, too. At 20? I was a single parent, too. I would NEVER have made the choices that Christina did with her body. Although I am sympathetic to what happened to Christina. I also would ask her, "What did you THINK would happen when you became an escort? Didn't you understand that is a risky job where women sometimes end up beaten, or dead?" --At some level, I HAVE to believe she knew that. It would discredit the intelligence Christina DOES have to believe she had NO IDEA that what she was doing had risk and was dangerous. Since she was also a mother? I have little sympathy that she put herself in harms way with her son at home. There are plenty other decisions women with children can make. Again, am I sympathetic to what HAPPENED? Sure. I was stung, but understood at once what she was saying. I bought some new jackets. It wasn't enough that I was wearing my old jacket with wool gaberdine skirts and button-down shirts and pricey flats. In my old town I would have been fine. (BTW- In my old town 20 was a survivor age for a lot of kids, as the town was hit hard by drugs and then by drug related health issues that took their toll. Clean needles were not used and safe sex was not talked about. (the 80's)) I managed to avoid drugs and everything else. My point- Sometimes a dress code has to be spelled out, especially when it's time to take a new path, as was the case for Christina. I hope she understands this. I look at things on an individual basis. I see some people in the 40s and 50s that could use some lessons from our young generation and visa versa. You could have 3 children in the same house not far apart in age and all 3 will turn out differently. So to compare her with others isn't really fair. I agree that her choices weren't the best. Especially being a single Mom. I don't condone it at all. I am coming from a place of being abused. When I was abused I became a manipulator to the biggest extent. That's how I survived. My life was threaten as was my family. He told me if I left he would have my family killed. I was 19 when I married him and 20 when I left. I believed him for many reasons of which I won't go into here. I didn't trust a soul. Not one person including family. I went into survivor mode even after leaving him. I had to manipulate my ex husband to get through a day. Then it became a pattern until I left. It took time, counseling and awareness. I am not making excuses for Christina. I am 44 now and happily married for 18 years, but I continued for a very long time on a rocky road of drugs, alcohol and sex. It was demeaning even tho the whole time I knew what I was doing wrong. I was not an escort nor a stripper. We do what we know until we decide to change it. Christina is young enough now to make a change. As it seems, she is trying. I think that's all anyone can ask is to try the best you can to learn from the past and move onward. Not sure what is wrong with working a family business. It's better than her alternative. Hopefully she is working on her GED and accepting her past, learning from it and never going back. We really don't know what her home life was like to want her to get out of the house at 16. My home was violent with alcohol abuse running rambant. I was out at 15 working a job at a burger place and living with friends. Sympathy, maybe not so much. Christina was married at a very young age and it was her husband who told her it would be a good idea for her to start stripping. Of course, the decision to do it was hers but I am sure he had a certain amount of control over her. I think that she was married to a pretty rotten guy who helped her make some pretty rotten choices. I am not saying she shouldn't be responsible for her own choices. But I am saying that sometimes life is not a simple as you make it seem.
