LAST EDITED ON 08-05-03 AT 10:01 PM (EST)Okay, some filler for the Left Coast friends. Yes, filler filler filler. Hint: Dave Mordal did not win. Okay is that enough Filler? Hope so. Your winner is none other than: DAT PHAN I'd love to be able to say "I told ya so"... but I thought Ralphie May should've won. Even Ralphie's encore performance was so funny my sides were splitting. Dat Phan re-used some material, although it was a variant of the earlier stuff. So, if anyone wants to cry that this was rigged... well, not that I'm a Conspiracy Theorist or anything , but I'll entertain your gripes with an understanding nod.

> >DATPHAN isn't funny and he isn't >original. I watched final >hoping to see something new, >and all I got was >just a repeat of another >standup act he did the >week before last, just rearranged. My wife and I had to record and then watch the show and we actually fast-forwarded Dat's routine once he started with the "exasperated mother" voice. I guess his development deal will be 12 Vietnamese people trying to adjust to living in California. >Did anyone else notice how funny >VOSS was on the final? > Every outtake, every interview, >funny how they only choose >to air this after the >"votes" had been counted. Ya. Everything that came out of Voss's mouth was hilarious and it was impressive because it was so spur-of-the-moment. He was like one of those really funny guys you just like to hang out with. I about died when Jay Mohr asked him who he thought he was funnier than and he said, "I would have to say you." Funny how they edited out the fact that he was in charge of buying a new shirt for Dat to make up for playing the hide and seek trick on him. That would have cut into Dat's sympathy factor.
Eyes rolling across the floor here.

I saw Voss live last year in Rochester, NY and he absolutely killed. I heard people saying that his material didn't stand out. I think one of the problems is that he is normally a lot dirtier. His CD has a 10 minute bit which includes the F- Canada stuff but also going off on all kinds of other stuff. He's also just as quick with the crowd he really tore apart a few tables up front during the show. He had me in tears. I've seen a lot of big names and I'd have to rank him in the top 3 including Robert Shimmel and Bobby Slayton.Has anyone else seen these guys in a club? Jack > >Did anyone else notice how funny >VOSS was on the final? > Every outtake, every interview, >funny how they only choose >to air this after the >"votes" had been counted. >I didn't really like VOSS >until the damn final. >It's all in the editing. >

I just think it's possible that NBC just wanted Dat to win. Probably not, but I just don't think he was anywhere close to the funniest person on the show. IMHO, of the five finalists, Rich was just the all-around funniest. Not only did I like his routine best, but in the conversations with Jay and the rest of the comics, he was very quick-witted and had a very funny remark just roll off his tongue with great ease. At least is wasn't Ralphie.

8. "Quick comment" |
Well, I guess I should comment, since I wrote the summary of the final performances.Although all comedy is subjective, I don't think there was any question that Rich Vos gave far and away the best final performance. But that's not the determining factor in a call-in show like this. Did Dat Phan deserve to win? Well, I don't have any problem with it. Yeah, I agree that NBC edited him most favorably. But Dat is a funny person. I hope he can overcome his nervousness. Ralphie's comment (in a newspaper interview) that NBC didn't want him to win is probably true. But, from what I saw, his final routine just wasn't that funny, so he doesn't really have grounds to complain about his finish.

I don't think there was any question that Rich Vos gave far and away the best final performance. Do you mean the Final Five competition or last night? Because if you mean the before-the-voting competition, there is very much question that Vos's performance was best. IMHO, and it's subjective, I thought Ralphie gave far and away the best final performance in the Final competition before the voting. Vos, IMHO, could have been any comic in any comedy club on any weekend. His material was not fresh (I felt like I'd heard it all before), and wasn't topical. Ralphie's was. IMHO, in the competition, Ralphie was the only one who gave a strong performance. All 4 others were much below what I expected and/or hoped for. Did Dat Phan deserve to win? Well, I don't have any problem with it. Yeah, I agree that NBC edited him most favorably. But Dat is a funny person. The person who got the most votes deserved to win. *IF* that was Dat Phan, then great. But those who think it might have been rigged have a strong case: the editing, the commercials, the fact that only Dat Phan really wanted a TV career over a comedy career, etc. Also note that Dat Phan won a TV-show "acting" spot (for what it was), whereas Cory won a stage appearance on the Very Late show (Conan?) and Tess won an appearance on a show that stressed her comedy, not her TV skills. Hey, I like Dat, I think he's funny. But if they're going to rig the system and GIVE him the win, tell it for what it is. Ralphie's comment (in a newspaper interview) that NBC didn't want him to win is probably true. Agree. I also think that Ralphie and Dat both knew the outcome before it was announced... one could say "of course they did, they had to prepare those final routines at the end of the Finale show!", but I think they knew the order of it, as well, judging from their actions as it was announced. And my point in saying that is this: Ralphie knew he wouldn't win, which is why he fired off his remarks in that earlier interview. Maybe he was hoping to induce a fair win back into the thing, or maybe he was just venting anger at a done deal, but either way, I don't blame him for his remarks.

10. "RE: Quick comment" |
I think that Ralphie and Dat both knew the outcome before it was announced... But Dawg, why on earth would NBC risk the element of surprise by informing the winners and losers before the show? If NBC was blatant in editing Dat as the underdog, then would they really want to miss out on the look of shock on the underdog's face when he finds out live that he actually WON? I just don't think so. I also think Sir Ralphie "of the b**ch *ss punk/ punk *ss b**ch" fame looked appropriately shocked at losing to the comic that Cory deemed a "fluke" (Oops! in-your-comically-full-of-yourself-face, Cory ). I know you and others don't agree, Dawg, but I do think Ralphie gambled away his chances with his pep rally that relied more on dogma than on humor. He did it last night too-- championing fat women over skinny women with no rear ends. It wasn't humor, IMHO, it was a rah-rah-get-the-support-of-the-audience-ploy. Not to mention the hypocrisy of his attack on skinny b**ches. Doesn't he know we've seen his skinny *ss girlfriend? To me, Ralphie is funny when he does jokes, but what do I know? I thought Dat Phan should/would win... hahahaha

Dat= Marketable Ralphie= Not Marketablepure and simple NBC had the fix in since he beat Dave Mordal But I will admit my biggest laugh of the night was when they were showing family members and they Showed Dave as Rich's "special friend"
