1. "RE: DAT PHAN Funniest Comic" |
He set himself up for a lot of the picking, since he admitted that stand-up comedy is just a stepping stone for him. As obnoxious as their behavior can be in the house, the more seasoned comedians have a point. They're putting the less experienced comedians up on the challenges to make them prove it where it counts. That was the whole reason they went for Rob this week. They all liked him, and they thought he had a lot of potential, but he's greener than the other folks in the house. That's also how Geoff put a huge target on his back. He said he was going to vote for Rob, and then he didn't. That meant that Rob couldn't challenge him. He lost respect for backing out like that. He should have either told them he was voting for someone else, or he should have stuck his neck out there like the others did. They pick on Dat because he hasn't proven himself. Stand-up comedy is not an easy life, and the others have thrown themselves into it, despite the crappy pay and the constant travel and some of the venues comedians have to play before they make it big. They feel like he just doesn't get it, being so wrapped up in his charts. Bebo, Queen of the Backwoods and your American Idol PTTE co-champ

Just b/c you are seasoned and you have put in your "time" doesn't entitle you. You still have to be good. That's what I like about the voting format -- you've got to be willing to put yourself on the line with your vote. Yes, they're arrogant, but in each case, Rich, Dave, and Ralphie have exposed themselves to being picked for the challenge by voting in the majority. They were willing to get up there and prove they should stay. And Dave and Ralphie have had to back it up. That's why Geoff lost so much respect in the last episode. He said that he was willing to take the same risk, but then he wimped out and knowingly voted against the majority. He wasn't willing to take the chance that he would be picked and risk going home. The big picture would be getting the respect of the industry and the comics who have already made it. There are different definitions of "made it". Having steady work on the comedy circuit as a headliner, or as a middle act in big cities, can pay quite well. Just because it hasn't led to something else doesn't mean that they're not successful in the field. I think that's one reason why some of the folks who've been around longer don't respect Dat - because they don't think he respects the industry. He basically told them that it was a stepping stone to acting for him. In other words, he'll do this until something better comes along. I can see some of the others taking offense to that sort of mindset, especially if they've been busting their chops for years to get this kind of exposure. It's kinda like the reason Jay Mohr campaigns so hard for this show - he thinks it's ridiculous that people who've lost on a reality show get invited to appear on Letterman, when comics have been working for years and years for that kind of exposure. Yes, there are comics who have branched out from the comedy circuit, but they still typically keep contact with it since that's their first love. Jerry Seinfeld and Tim Allen are two names that come to mind who've continued to do stand-up even though they have had acting jobs. And Chris Rock is right now hitting some of the comedy clubs to tone up for doing the MTV Awards. The thing is, he's not headlining on the weekends, which someone of his stature would typically do. He's playing shows on Monday and Tuesday nights, when comedy clubs are typically pretty dead. That gives him a chance to polish his act but not crowd other comics out of lucrative gigs. He was in here in Raleigh this week, and I hated missing out on tickets - I heard he was absolutely terrific. Bebo, Queen of the Backwoods and your American Idol PTTE co-champ

>You have swayed me Bebo! Now if only I could get Station Manager Bubba to stop taking reality shows off the air... Seriously, though, I used to be related by marriage to a stand-up comedian. I learned a lot about the business by watching his mishandle his career. But since I got to see him starting out, I saw a lot of the crap that these folks go through to try and make it in the business. These folks go through a lot, and I admire the ones who take it seriously, stick with it, and put forth the effort to do it well. Bebo, Queen of the Backwoods and your American Idol PTTE co-champ

No, I agree with you. I was laughing way more during Rob's performance than Ralphies. Ralphie's performance was kinda...i don't know, i just didn't like it. I don't know how 85% of those people thought Ralphie was funnier. whatever. Rob was one of my favorites, but now that he's gone, i'm going for dat and Dave. smiles the tvgeek

I am of the opinion that Dat Phan licks, and not in the good way.I'm so bored with that Oh I'm So Funny When I Make Fun of My Asian Self bit. It's old. RE: Margaret Cho. It wasn't funny then. It still isn't. And the judges yesterday were InSaNe for saying his show idea was the best. Oh goodness. How awful. Korean Nail Salon. Pick a Color. Should've been called Kill Me Now. ~ cq

agreed, DatFan is the least funny person there and the only reason he even got picked for the show is because of his sob story. Without a doubt the older guy from Minnesota is the funniest person there and his "bad terrorist" bit was textbook satire and was absolutely hilarious. As he said so correctly, "what, it worked for Hogans Heroes".
And Voss is probably the second funniest person there, at least he was during the tryouts. I love how he does all his confessionals while ironing pants...that's just hilarious subtext. and also great satire if the intent was to make fun of how people on shows like Survivor are always in certain exotic spots while doing confessionals.

Gotta sgree with Shakes, Dave Mordell is the best one in the house. I love that guy.Dat is funny, for but a minute, he hasn't got anything but the ethnic thing, which gets old quick. He isn't anywhere near good as the rest. I think his pitch was better though, his sitcom idea pitch was presented well. The others goofed the challenge, some had good ideas, but they didn't put any effort into the presentation. They basically blew it off. Comics have to play to their strengths, if you got the ethic thing going, great! But they have to have something more. They have to be Funny! Dat is the least talented Comic in the house. What he does have going for him is determination. The others are underestimating his determination. Oh, and did I mention I am tired of hearing his sob story? GO DAVE!!

I'm pretty sure I have seen Dave Mordal's act here at our comedy club. He looks and sounds very familiar. I think he's the funniest guy in the house. The ironing board thing is pretty funny, but it seems like Vos needs a gimic to be funny. Plus the whole DON thing is a little annoying. Cory is not very funny. Haven't seen Tess (missed her tryout routine). Ralphie... he was a little rusty against Rob. I thought Rob's bit was funnier. I agree with Bebo on Geoff's loss of respect and Dat's notebook. Geoff should've voted for the majority - he came off as scared and nervous (Rob was probably funnier). Dat should get his head out of his notebook. I guess it just depends on what you think is funny. I personally love sarcasm and dry humor.... Dave is my man. A Kyngsladye Original

13. "A different perspective" |
LAST EDITED ON 07-10-03 AT 07:18 AM (EST)I'm sure you're just *stunned* that I have a slightly different perspective on this. I remember something that someone once told me: Almost all humor is at someone's expense. And if you think about it, it's true: think of just how hard it is to come up with a clean joke that is not at someone's expense. We have fat jokes, blonde jokes, gay jokes (as told by Ralphie), self-deprecating jokes, stereotype jokes, etc. A joke of reality tv shows (particularly one's that feature muscular, bug-eyed women). Virtually all are at SOMEONE'S expense. Soooo, my point is: comics have to have a certain "mean streak" in them to do what they do, and do it well. And we're seeing that in this show. Some of these people are just plain mean: Vos, Mordell, Tess, Cory... these people are just plain MEAN. Ralphie exhibits some signs of it. The whole hide-and-seek thing as an example. We laugh at their comedy without knowing the background... and this show is tearing the lid off Hell and letting us see that background. To that end, Dat Phan doesn't have the mean streak that the others have. Neither did Tere (spike-hair girl). As such, they were (and are) easy targets, not only for abuse, but to be targeted for elimination. Rob isn't quite as "nice" as Dat, but he's a lot nicer than most of the others, so HE was targeted. And, to that end, "cowboy" (hell, I don't even remember his name now, he was first eliminated) apparently expected sympathy since he had had cancer. Sheesh. *NO* sympathy is to be found in THIS household. Upon moving into the house, Vos immediately lit into him and they disliked each other. It's easy for Mordell and Vos to just sit and look Dat in the eyes and verbally tear him down... they are mean as hell. Tess's little cackle at Dat's impending doom... she's just enjoying herself (almost orgasmically) that someone else is about to get "hurt" (i.e. eliminated). Even Mordell's "terrorist" humor (which I found to not be very funny, not only because it's not a good time to tell terrorist jokes, but the material just wasn't funny) is an example. Hence, it's easy to see why the meanest people in the house allied so easily, it's easy to see why the targets ARE the targets. Humor is based on the innate meanness of people. And this show is exposing that to the World.

Contradictions don't exist. If you are faced with a contradiction, check your premises. You will find that one of them is wrong. -- Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

Even Mordell's "terrorist" humor (which I found to not be very funny, not only because it's not a good time to tell terrorist jokes, but the material just wasn't funny) is an exampleI actually disagree with your statement above. I find that the best comedians can joke about serious topics and situations in a way that can bring some really great perspective. Two good examples of this are Carlos Mencia and Phil Hendrie (I don't know if anyone listens to him, absolutely hysterical) I recommend going to see Carlos Mencia if he is playing in your hometown, he has a way of poking fun at every type of person, from every type of culture, current events and bringing it all together in the end. (Definitely an "R" rated show though - not for the kiddies) Anyway - just my two cents . . .

No offense, but you want him to win just because he's the underdog. Everyone wants the underdog to win cuz they feel like an underdog themselves. It would be a moment of triumph, sure! But would YOU watch a show about a Korean nail salon? I think the focus group did get one thing right : it has a great "Big Fat Greek Wedding" feel to it. I hate BFGW. I hate romantic comedies in general. As a matter of fact, i hate "cute" humor. That's for children. That's not humor, that's feel-good stuff. It makes you feel good, sure, maybe, but its NOT funny. Simpsons and 70s Looney Tunes are a thousand times funnier than Rugrats or Lion King. They're all good shows, but not for the same reasons. Dat is not funny. I have not laughed yet at anything he DID in the house. His act was humorous. Somewhat. That's it. Mordall is hilarious. You may think they're being mean or whatever but just the fact that someone is picked on doesnt mean theyre more deserving. It's like supporting Apple cuz Microsoft has the bigger market share. If Apple FITS your software needs, then go for it. Don't do it just cuz you wanna go against the majority or be different or prove a point. You are a follower on both sides. If the show was called last feel-good-actor standing, then yeah, youd be right. It's not. Dave Mordall, #1! "Damn... power's out... I know! I could use the light from the TV!!" "I had a nice suit but Rich Vos took it"

Dat Phan won because he is as handsome as he is funny as well as the fact he took the high road. He never retaliated against those who made fun of him in the house knowing his greatest revenge would be winning and win he did. Ini closing, I can't wait to see more of Dat Phan!!!!!!

Any lame thing he could have done would have been like throwing gas on a fire. Had Dat pulled off anything on any of the others, he probably would have gotten their respect. That holier than though stuff makes you want to yank his chain. Sorry, he got what he deserved.
