"Friday Night Lights"
LAST EDITED ON 10-01-06 AT 11:23 PM (EST)

I guess the premier isn't until Tuesday. It looks interesting to me but it also looks like another version of One Tree Hill which I never really got into.

So I just watched it at NBC.com and let's just say this Texas girl had herself a real good cry. The amazing thing is that high school football in Texas really is like that. I was in the band in high school in a small town in East Texas. Football was KING in my community. The players and coaches really are under that kind of pressure.

I liked this show and will probably try to watch it.

I found it odd that the show airs on Tuesdays, although I guess it makes sense. Friday nights are for football, no?

I was only half-watching because of the 2-year old, but it seemed the characters were more like the ones in Varsity Blues than Friday Night Lights (the movie). Without the comedy parts, that is. Maybe the writers tried to make the show a combination of both movies.

I didn't catch the original Tuesday broadcast but my DVR taped one of NBC's two repeat broadcasts and watched it over the weekend.

I agree that the pilot's storyline seemed lifted right out of Varsity Blues (I actually had gotten Varsity Blues and the Friday Night Lights movie plots confused when I was watching it and thought it seemed to just be re-playing the movie's opening storyline over with a new cast) -- and the fact that so much of the initial storyline focused on the backup QB pretty much telegraphed what was coming.

I'll probably add it to my DVR season pass list, but I'm not sure it will be around very long -- it didn't do very well ratings-wise against Dancing with the Stars and NCIS (although that really shouldn't have been a big surprise to NBC.)

I watched it last night. What I could, anyway. I started to like it a little better. I loved the scene at Applebee's with all the peeps trying to tell the coach how to win the game. Soooooo true to life.

Now, about the QB's friend, the non-crippled QB's friend that is. It may just be me, but is the character trying to be Will Hunting (sans intelligence) or is the actor trying to be Matt Damon? He even (sort of) looks like Matt.

This might be one of the best shows on television right now. Its really a shame the first episode was basically just a copy of the movie because since then the show has revealed a ton of depth as well as interesting characters.

I sure hope the ratings pick up because this really is one of the best shows on tv right now.

I watch the show and enjoy it. I was thinking it was over the top on how much the community gets into playing football with the scheming, suggestions to the coach, etc. but to listen to you all, I guess it's pretty dead on.

Hard to fathom that EVERYONE gets involved. The coach has a hard way to go with this town.

One of the more crucial ways that you can tell the town/parents take this so seriously is when he called all the kids after seeing the one kid being interviewed on the late night news for a meeting/practice, and they came!!!! The big sissies where I live, all the mothers would be saying "you're not taking my baby boy out in the rain at this hour".

Favorite line:

Coach to wife: "Uh-oh, I think I just told him (QB) to get our daughter into the backseat with him".

The majority of the episode was about there being a "by" week, and the rivalry/vandalism/retaliation of the two teams who play next week.

On my DVR it's shown as being on both Monday at 10 pm EST (to test it in another time slot--which is not good for Studio 60 which I stopped watching after week 2 or 3 blech--but it will go up against CSI Miami which is a high rated show) and Tues at 8pm EST--Daylight saving time ends this Sunday.

I really like this show and I wasn't expecting to...nice suprise! I hope it stays on the air...

I was so happy for Saracen at the end. It was so great to see him have that confidence and win that game. What's up with this Voodoo? Do high school quarterbacks really act that way? I just can't imagine. Good for Coach Taylor to get rid of him.

Saracen's crush on the coach's daughter is cute.

Tim and Lyla? Is this just a grief thing?

And what's up with Tyra? What was that all about? Is some bigger story going to spin from her sleeping with the oil guy? Maybe she'll get pregnant and say it's Tim's?

Somebody's getting kicked off the team next week? ack.

Good episode.........

VooDoo was a bad idea from the word "GO". Coach Taylor knew it. Didn't it look like Garrity was trying to get out of it? Like he thought the coach was responsible? Isn't Garrity the minister? And don't forget about the minister's daughter, Lila!

Interesting idea(pregnancy) about Tyra! I was so disappointed in her going to the motel, she's a teenager! She knew he was leaving town. Just go out and have fun...you're too young for a rebound, especially with an older man, whom you find out after the fact that he's attached to someone else.

Glad Tim went to see Street in rehab.

Nice to see that Street isn't going to wallow in pity for too much longer. Where are his parents?

Good to Sorenson (sp) he did a great job. That's teamwork!

You have to give credit to VooDoo for telling Coach Taylor his true intentions. He just wants to get noticed and signed to LSU, he doesn't care about the team. So basically, he's using the team. He's not committed to the team or the families or the town.

Did VooDoo purposely throw the interception because Taylor called him out????

oooh. Is Garrity the minister? That part went past me at some point, I guess. I do think he's going to try to place all the blame on Coach Taylor.

I kept thinking about the whole age thing with Tyra too. I guess that Conner person didn't know how old she is? Didn't care? ick. Just seems like there has to be more to that story. It didn't seem important enough to leave in otherwise.

Yes! I love that Tim finally went to see Jason. Touching scene.

What is this wheelchair ball game called?

I don't think Voodoo purposely through the interception. I think he just messed up ~ not as good as he thinks he is ~ got too cocky.

I was happy to for Saracen. And I love his crush. And I love the Taylors' relationship. And of course, I lvoe Kyle Chandler.

I think Tim probably has some real feelings for Lyla, but she is very needy right now. I don't think Tim loved Tyra. I feel bad for Lyla.

Gotta be something bigger coming for Tyra.

I think it's Voodoo that gets the boot. I think the preview is misleading. I think it will end up that the game will be nullified, and he gets booted. The fact that Taylor has to dismiss him means the game was nullified. Am I making sense? I think kicking him off isn't going to be hard, it's the fact that the team now "loses" that game.

35. "NBC orders a full season!!!"
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

NBC Orders Up More `Friday Night Lights'

Nov 13, 4:28 PM (ET)

NEW YORK (AP) - NBC said Monday it has ordered a full season's worth of "Friday Night Lights" episodes, its second endorsement in a week of a freshman series that so far has attracted more attention from critics than viewers.

The drama, based on the book and film of the same name, focuses on the coach and football players from the high-school team in rural Dillon, Texas.

"We're proud to reward an authentic, poignant series," said Kevin Reilly, NBC entertainment president.

The show has averaged 6.1 million viewers this season. It stands at No. 81 in Nielsen Media Research's season ratings, or just below ABC's Friday-night rerun of "Grey's Anatomy."

NBC said it was encouraged that the show had a bigger audience in the second half hour than the first in its first five showings on Tuesdays, an indication that those who were watching liked what they saw. It also did well among young viewers during a special tryout on Monday, Reilly said.

Last week, NBC also gave a full-season order to "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," the Aaron Sorkin series that has thus far been a ratings disappointment.

The decisions mean producers will make nine more episodes following the first 13, to make a season's worth of 22. Not receiving this order is usually a death sentence for a series.

oh how I do love this show...

So Tyra and Tim are at it again. Does this validate my suspicion that she is going to end up pregnant and say it's Tim's and it'll really be Conner's?

It really bummed me out that Jason found out about Tim and Lyla. Tami was right ~ it only hurts him worse than he's already been hurt. It was a mistake and it was over. Now all three of them are hurting over something that should have never happened. Stupid kids. ...I'm not saying it's okay to cheat on somebody or screw your best friend's girlfriend. I'm saying they're young and made a mistake. They were both crushed over Street's injuries and leaned on eachother. They (Lyla) realized what they were doing was wrong and ended it. It was over. ugh. What a mess.

I'm very disappointed in Smash. I was totally expecting him to give the money back to the church or to find an actual course to take. Bummer.

I didn't realize things were so bad with Billy and Tim. I hope Billy finds a job that sticks but something tells me that's not going to happen. You know, since it would add to the drama to have them struggle to pay bills, lose the house, Tim has to get a job, fails out of school, can't play football... waaaaaaaah! I'm making myself sad.

Julie and Matt should be a cute relationship to watch bud. However, he seems to want so badly to be a cool guy that I fear he may fall to the pressure and start treating her like his little whore. That? would be sad.

Glow, great write-up.

I love this show as well. Really nothing else like it.

Really getting ticked at Smash, that church collection should have put more guilt on him, but I guess it will push him to be a better football player. I see a trip to the hospital in his future!!!

Serenson, he's going to get in big trouble when Smash steals from the restaurant.

Serenson with Julie (?) I wish he would just be himself, and not succumb to peer pressure.

How about the sophmore, nervous about doing a three-way? OH my gosh, adults have a struggle with that, much less sophmores????

Yep, Tyra will actually be pregnant by Californian business man, but will say it's Tim's. As if Tim and his brother didn't have enough problems.

Thanks to Seana for my sigpic!!!

Will Smash stop taking the enhancement drugs now? The "anxiety" attack must have scared the crap out of him. Right? And he won the big game...

WTF was up with the whole team smashing Tim's truck with baseball bats? That's crazy. Do kids really do stuff like that? ack. If they'd have beaten him instead of his truck, they'd have been sorry. You know, since they couldn't have won the game without him. And where does Tyra get off getting upset with him? They were broken up. Well, she did say, "Anybody but her." I guess that answers my question. Poor Tim (Glowie = biased). Looks like him and Lyla are going to try to make up with Street next week.

What else? oh. Saracen + Julie = still cute

I'm still enjoying the show...probably because there isn't a show quite like it on right now.

A little more insight into Smash's family. He needs to get off the steroids....now!

Yep, Tim's getting it from all directions. He needs to get off the beer, and stand up and be a man. But, indeed, he's been dealt a terrible family hand as well. Hope it turns around next episode.

Sarenson...well he's just a good ole boy. Another kid with a lot of family problems.

I'm wondering if something bad will happen to Smash because of the steroids. For some reason I see a very sad ending for him.
I loved the part where his mother told him to take his rude mouth and his plate and get out of her face.

And I love Julie and Matt. Their whole date thing had me cracking up the entire time. (Note the new tag line below.) And I loved it when she came out in those heels and that dress and Coach Taylor just said, "No." And then when he asked Matt if he wanted a beer.

"Is that a Members Only jacket?" heh

Smash will end up going down the won't-be-getting-a-scholarship addiction road. Bad. Yes.

Every week I think I might get through an episode without tearing up but it never happens (or without thinking about how hot Taylor Kitsch is but that never happens either).

This show. yeesh. Awesome it is. Sometimes you just have to sit back and admire the scenery... no, I wasn't (only) talking about the hot #33 there... and the camera work.

ETA:
I was doing work (gasp) and the Saracen and his grandmother storyline popped into my head. Landry saying he doesn't want to be alone with Matt's grandma and Matt going, "She's not a witch. She's just not." ha! And then Landry calling him during his big date with Julie because grandmother's locked herself in the closet. So Matt goes home and pretends to be his grandfather to get her out. "Mister Sandman, bring me a dream..." Love this kid.

Shots out of focus, weird framing, people walking through the shot on a close-up... more of a distraction (imho) than a plus.

You have the girl that Smash knows coming to Dillon. She makes great comments about men needing to mate with any girl they can find because of animal instincts, however, humans are above that.

She and her father comment they've been in Africa on an Outreach program.....but never elaborate or show pictures. Now, my dad went to Africa, and he couldn't stop talking about it. Still does.

Personally, I think she was sexually violated, and went away to have a child....

Any thoughts?????

Oh and I loved how she kinda let Smash know that she's not too sold that he's going to SAT classes.

Now, was she smiling at Tim or Jason? I personally don't think anyone knew Jason was there, otherwise, he should have had one or two people by him.

I think Jason was proud of her, but I have a feeling Lila will be going out with Tim again, and Jason will get crushed a little more.

“It’s Different For Girls”
Ya think? Poor Lyla. This episode made me say, “is high school really like this?” again. She slept with somebody that wasn’t her crippled boyfriend. Get over it. Websites and locker graffiti? Yeesh. We see this sweet cheerleader get tough and hardened. This episode was hard to watch. Brutal.

The only time Buddy Garrity doesn’t make me shudder in disgust is when he’s being all concerned about Lyla. Awwww. Daddy’s little girl. I love that her parents are so good to her.

I felt so bad for Tim at the end. How terrible it must be watch your best friend get crippled on the football field, feel responsible for your best friend getting crippled, fall in love with your crippled best friend’s girlfriend, sleep with your crippled best friend’s girlfriend, sit in horror as you realize your crippled best friend is pummeling you because he knows you slept with his girlfriend, agonize because you know nothing you can say at this point will make your crippled best friend stop hating you just yet, try desperately to mask the love you have for your crippled best friend’s girlfriend when confronted by your girlfriend, and realize that your crippled best friend’s girlfriend is still totally in love with your crippled best friend. Poor Tim. The ending when Lyla looked right through him to look at Jason? Yikes. Brutal.

So the preacher’s daughter was supposedly in Africa. I think she was off having babies somewhere. Preacher was too embarrassed, sent her away, yadda yadda yadda. Smash will confide in this girl. He will have some sort of life threatening difficulty with his steroids. This girl will turn him around. Well, that’s my prediction.

Coach is really getting on my nerves about the whole Saracen and Julie thing. “They had a blanket.” Dude.

49. "RE: December 12th episode"
LAST EDITED ON 12-13-06 AT 10:47 AM (EST)

(I could go on and on about this show. I remember things as the day goes. I'll be working and something else will pop into my head.)

The guys in drag! LOL. Riggins in pigtails. *giggle*

Julie and Matt were watching The Office! How cute is that?

Tami had some good lines this week. "Don't drive on the curb, whoever you are." "You're an idiot."

That chick (Britney) who started the website's father coming to Buddy to tell him about it. The actor nailed that small part he had. Even the extras and the people with bit parts are amazing on this show!

Oh and the lawyer nailed his scene too. Speaking of the lawyer, how about that lawsuit? Are they going to sue Coach Taylor? ack! I hope Jason doesn't let that happen.

ohmigawd. When Lyla started walking away from Jason and he grabbed her hand and put it to his face. *sob*

And Tim going to Jason... And Tim going to Lyla to convince her to go to that cheer thing... every.single.scene. with Tim is heartbreaking anymore (except for the pigtails. thank cod for the pigtails).

I really like Tyra I think. Her whole thing with Lyla is incredibly realistic. To her, Lyla is this perfect girl with this perfect life and to find out that Tim slept with her was about all she could take. Then this week when Tim sat with Lyla in the lunch room ('might as well be wearing a scarlet letter') and Tyra told him he's just making it worse for her. She's pretty easy on the eyes too.

{shallow}The scenes with Tim and Tyra are some of my favorites. If this show gives me nothing else, it gives me some fantastic eye candy. {/shallow}

This show is so well written.
Matt: "you can't stop Julie and I.."
Coach: "Julie and me."
Matt: "huh?"
Coach: "It's Julie and me. Common mistake."

The little bits of dialogue like that just amaze me. Especially with the Taylor family. This show feels so real. That's why I love the handheld. Makes it look like you're watching a documentary.

55. "1/3/07 episode - "Nevermind""
I must say that my first thought when seeing the title was the Nirvana album. ~Not so surprising to those of you who know my affection for dear Kurt.~ Imagine my delight to find out that’s where it actually did come from.

The Clay Aiken exchange in the record store with Jason and Lyla was pretty cute. Sure he’s a little too quick to forgive her but what else does he have going for him right now? Quad porn? Who knew? Loved the “If you want to get laid so bad, go do it with Riggins” comment he made to her. Burn. Lyla coming through Jason’s window reminded me of Dawson’s Creek. I’ll have to see if there’s any shared writers there (since I already looked and found a link to My So Called Life = the greatest show ever).

"It's part of my job to make sure you don't grow up stupid. It's bad for the world." Awesome. That may become my new tagline.

Tim and Tami’s scene (s) were fabulous. His grin when she said “oral report”. Pardon me for the drool around my chin when I say this but Taylor Kitsch is so much better than he’s given credit for. Sure he’s pretty ~not that I’ve noticed much~ but he’s actually an okay actor. Hey, give him some credit. He was an Abercrombie and Fitch model. This episode, for me, was his best yet. He keeps getting better and better. Though quit having him say “about”. He’s supposed to be from Texas and he’s Canadian, dudes. At first I thought I’d have loved to hear his oral report and how he relates the trials of friendship to his own. Though I guess that could have potentially been a little too much, eh? We knew where it was going. But his obvious pleasure and anxiousness at telling Landry he got a B-... He just gets better and better. And…

The actor that plays Landry is fascinating. Jessie Plemons. How wonderful is this character? I loved the dynamics between Landry and Riggins. Ohmigawd how fantastic that he actually read the book to him while he was training! “What is Riggins doing?” “he’s studying.” Awesome. And Landry all but smacked Tim on the back of the head trying to make him relate Of Mice and Men to himself. Though I believe Tim got it but didn’t want to admit he got it. Shades of Krakow/Catalano anyone? Though I did say if Riggins can’t read, I’m going to scream. (although that question never really was answered for us… which throws me back to the scene in the grocery store with Billy where he wanted to buy the magazine and Tyra bought it for him) Give Landry more scenes. “I really want to shoot you. That’s how I relate to this book.” Brilliance. Ha! And his band. What is it? Crucifictorious? The look on Tim’s face when he found out they had another set and Landry wanted him up front. headbanging. Hee. Christian metal doesn’t seem to be his cuppa.

Coach’s dilemma about caring about the kids (Tim’s no pass no play) but caring about the games was incredibly realistic and proves once again that he’s not a perfect man. So many shows try to make everybody so perfect. Love this show.

Saracen and his dad brings me back to my comment before about even the fill-in characters being played by awesome awesome actors. When Grandma kept telling him his dad was outside and to help him with his bags? The look on his face? Emmy nomination. Matt can’t go to Oklahoma! How will that be resolved? Matt and Julie’s relationship is really blossoming, eh? The talk between Coach and Matt… The look on Tami’s face when she witnessed the exchange with frustrated Matt and concerned Julie. Julie’s “I don’t want him to go” broke my heart.

The fight between the Taylors over the trashcans? So real. Television greatness.

They didn’t say why Street was at Coach’s house to see him but I suspect it was regarding the lawsuit. Loved the Mrs. Coach/Jason talk.

If you watch this show for no other reason than Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, I will understand but it’s hard to deny the talent that’s spread throughout each and every character.

57. "RE: Friday Night Lights"
I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out the different things that make this show so much better than other shows. Luckily for me, they ran a marathon over my little break and I got to watch the episodes over (and over) again.

The character development is remarkable. Their background characters are carefully built up for their big climatic moments. For example, let’s take Reyes: he is featured in the football scenes in a pretty big way before his big episode (beating up Landry’s friend and being kicked off the team). El Accidente was widely and wildly viewed and reviewed as a not so good episode for a lot of people. I really expected to like this one from the previews and wasn’t crazy about it when I watched it the first time. Since Saturday, I’ve watched it two more times. This episode depicts the friendship between Street/Riggins that we had heard so much about but seen so little of. It very well could be my favorite episode because of the backplay and foreshadowing that goes on all around. I think it would be a work of writing genius to have the Tim/Landry friendship develop and have Landry somehow reconnect Street with Riggins. Somehow. Just give me more Landry/Tim.

Though Smash wasn’t featured in last night’s episode (“Nevermind”), we were reminded at the end exactly what his story line is during the game play. We were shown just how strong ~and fast~ he’s getting. Strong arming people out of his way as he made his way ~quickly~ to the goal line. In that same touchdown play though we were shown that Riggins helped him get that touchdown with a tremendous and much-needed block. This leaves one wondering if Riggins will show up on that “list” that Smash was so hoping to find himself on.

The little bits and pieces that you look through because they don’t exist on other shows. The careful perfection put into every comment and sideways glance. Coach and Tami are good examples of this. Tami’s callback of The Scarlett Letter when she was talking to Tim and him looking so sincere in not getting it. Tyra walking away from Tim and muttering “douchebag” under her breath. Julie using her mother’s voice when she’s trying to comfort her man. When the team went to see Street in the hospital, Voodoo stood by the door leaning against the wall. His face was registering something, perhaps it was fear that something like that could really happen. Then during that game, he screwed up and they brought Saracen in to win the game. Also during that game, before Voodoo threw the interception, Riggins looked over to Smash and they shook their heads. Does this mean they sabotaged the play on purpose? Or does it just mean they were disapproving of Voodoo calling his own plays?

I’ve talked myself out of the few faults I found with this show upon re-watching too. One of the first “flaws” was the Riggins/Smash hatred that fizzled out. There was some serious animosity there and all of a sudden *poof* they’re buddies. But upon re-watching, it occurs to me that one of two things happened here: 1) losing the QB and needing to work harder as a team to win the big games bonded them, or 2) the writers/producers think this might not last more than one season and needed to axe it. One of the other “flaws” was Voodoo. He was kind of here and gone. One of a few things could have happened here as well: 1) his story was done. He was just there to help us cheer for Saracen and get us on his side (not that they needed to do that. Zach Gilford is perhaps the most heartbreakingly and wonderfully written character on the show) or, 2) the writers/producers think this might not last more than one season and they needed to axe him, or 3) dude was getting paid too much money (production costs are an issue).

I don’t think this show will make it another season. In a way, I would love it to but what else could they do besides introduce new characters every season? Street is a senior. Tim is a senior. Lyla’s a senior. Who else? Tyra maybe? I can see Jay staying around Dillon but not Lyla. Unless she wants to become a coach’s wife, of course, and marries Jay ("Little Girl I Want To Marry You"...eep). But how boring would that be? I can maybe see Tim staying around as well but it would be kind of anticlimactic and non-developmental as far as the character goes. I’d rather see him make the list, get into a good college on a scholarship, go on to the NFL and become the breadwinner for the Street/Riggins ranch. Could the show carry on without the Taylors? Could the show carry on if Coach turns down the UT job? That would make it a little less believable and the show becoming less believable would make it less great. Television shows like this though are hard to come by and a second season may not do it justice. All good things must come to an end. I’d rather see it become a television cult phenomenon than watch it fade away into ratings nothingness.

59. "1/10/07 episode - "What To Do While You're Waiting""
LAST EDITED ON 01-11-07 AT 08:52 AM (EST)

Way to much Buddy Garrity on this episode. His church prayer was super funny. And he can sing!

The Tyra and her mom story must lead to somewhere I guess. She was gutsy and fiery when she stood up for her mother. She nailed that scene. It just seems like they give Tyra these out of place storyliness to use the actress more (because she's smokin hot and a magnificent actress and underused on the show thus far). I'm still waiting for some meaning to the story with the oil guy. I do like her character but she doesn't seem to fit. Maybe that's the point. I do hope her character starts to flow more evenly with the rest of the show. Tim's interest in Tyra taking him back seemed sudden and strange. (not enough Tim this episode) Her not taking him back was surprising. Makes me think that's how we're going to get more Tyra. Tim will be trying to win her back. We were also shown that she has to be the grown-up in her house to an extent. Maybe that's the beginning of a Tyra/Matt friendship. They both have a lot on their plates. But where was her sister? (remember her? the stripper...)

I want more Tim/Landry! Which brings me to no Landry this episode.

I can't figure out why Waverly likes Smash at all. ugh. He's so full of himself and ridiculous.

They seem to want us to like Matt's dad. His not wanting to wear the American flag pin to use as a selling tool was honorable. But then when he walked into the house from work and talked to Matt but blew right past grandma. You have to kind of feel for the guy though. He doesn't really know this kind of living.

Grandma walking around with the football and talking about the Buckley/Arnett game was fantastic. She's such a highlight on the show.

They make it impossible to dislike Jason and his parents for the lawsuit against Coach Taylor. We love Coach but dammit they need money to take care of their boy. And we love their boy. The scene in the pharmacy with his dad and Coach was heart wrenching. And the staredown at the rodeo with Jason and Coach was tear jerking and beautifully shot. Scott Porter is brilliant. Brilliant. He's so brilliant I'm actually warming up to Lyla. His acting skills are rubbing off on her maybe.

When Julie told Coach and Tami they were the best parents, the different reactions were hilarious. Coach is all smiles and thinking, awww. what a great daughter. yeah, we are the best parents. And Tami is all, "Something terrible must have happened!"

The end with everybody celebrating at the rodeo was so fun to watch. Matt and Julie hugging and him tackling her to the ground was so adorable.

Great review!!!

This show is so refreshing.

I loved Coach's reaction to Julie saying she loved them and they were the greatest. And the mom instincts kicked in beautifully, "something's wrong".

I missed Garrity singing!!! When did that happen? He is an arrogant man, and his prayer was hilarious.

Matt's dad annoys me to death. Matt had it right (maybe) "You're a good soldier". I think he's been in a life of giving and taking orders that he doesn't know what a family life is.

You would think also that he would want to get that house in shape! Scrape and paint, etc. 20 years in the service should be giving him a decent, although not prosperous salary (unless he's an officer, which doesn't seem to ring true with his actions.

Matt does have signs of burnout....Coach is wrong, his wife is right. Glad she's taking a liking to him and can give him a mother's attention.

thanks. I just love this show so much. The acting is so well done and superior to anything else on television.

Buddy Garrity sang a little during his prayer.

Matt's dad is annoying but like you said he doesn't know what a family life is. He's been in the service for twenty years. As far as his salary goes, I'm guessing that has something to do with Matt's mom... This would also explain why poor little Matt has to work and help pay rent on top of everything else that's expected of him.

Here's the thing - and I was thinking about this even before I read these thoughts about Dad's money earning capabilities - if Dad has been in the military for 20 years, he is eligible for retirement. And the amount the military pays out is nothing to sneeze at. It might support a family but it certainly helps. And Dad and Matt have automatic healthcare through the military.

Here's a link if your interested in what our military is paid to do the job of protecting our freedom.

Another website that sort of explains military retirement -

I agree with you as usual. I had to watch via Tivo at 9.

I teared up at the end when Jason went to see Coach at the field. What a horrible situation.

And I really liked Tyra last night. I wonder if Tim really wanted to get back with her or if he just decided to focus on her to get over Lila. You saw him watching her practice. He is still in love with her.

I love Julie and Matt. I love the way she takes care of him, and how she made the tea.

I do believe Tim really wants to get back with Tyra and he is still in love with Lyla. She's "Jay's girl. Always has been." I think he was surprised that Tyra turned him down. But really. Dude, could you have possibly picked a worse time to try to get her back with that classic jerky boyfriend apology? He probably sees that she is a better fit to him. It was so much easier being with her than being in love with Lyla.

Julie takes after her mother so much.

I bet you thought you were going to get through an entire episode without tearing up. heh.

Can this show be saved?

NBC's promotion department has also been working overtime to increase awareness of the show, airing episodes on Bravo, the network's little-sister cable channel, and streaming them free over NBC.com. Lights even has a new tag line — "It's About Life" — that airs at the end of each promo for the show. "That was the challenge going forward from November through February, to let people know it's about family," says NBC's in-house marketing president Vince Manze. "It's not about football."

We saw a promo for it at the movie theater last week when we went to see Happily Never After (our girls liked the movie but I thought it was pretty bad).

I must say I was a little bothered by the overt use of the word "a$$" this last episode. I'm not a prude but it just seemed a little out of character for this particular coach who seems to take the high road more often than not. And sometimes the "love" scenes are a little more than I want my children to see. I usually watch it the next day on nbc.com for this reason.

LAST EDITED ON 01-25-07 AT 09:37 AM (EST)

Jason and Lyla engaged? Gah. It’s so depressing to watch kids in high school getting engaged.

Buddy hired Tyra’s mom because she’s hot. That puts him back into icky territory for me. I guess they figured they better make him gross again. Tyra is smarter than that. She gave him that little look when he took her mom back to “interview” her. She knows. Not sure why she didn’t say anything though.

I love Tyra. I love Tim. I want them together! I love that she asked him to go talk to Buddy and he did.

But the scene with Buddy and Lyla made me love him a little bit. I have a love/hate relationship with icky Buddy Garrity.

Smash’s mother is wonderful. I loved that she just marched right into the locker room and dragged him into Coach’s office. I like the way this storyline is going but I’m kind of nervous about the upcoming episode. I don’t want anybody to find out about Coach Taylor knowing about it. You just KNOW this will haunt him somehow.

Not sure where the Mayor Rodell being a lesbian thing is going. I guess it will be interesting to see who takes offense to her sexual orientation.

Grandma Saracen seemed to be getting better it seemed until Matt’s dad left. I love that she hugged Matt and Julie together.

So many laughs this episode. Herc and Jason in Herc’s truck spying on Lyla. The wheel chairs sticking out of the truck bed. The Taylors listening to the psychologist in the car instead of Sammy Mead. The exchange between Coach and Tami in his office. The fact that Herc told Lyla that he would dump her and go after Tyra.

But……….Where is Landry?????????????????????

(I'm sure I'll be back with more.)

I liked the scene where Coach and Smash were in the diner and Coach told him about the guy frying the hamburgers and that he had been on that one guys list. Maybe that will open his eyes a little bit.

I think Buddy is going to get into trouble with Tyra's mom, and Tyra knows this, but I am with you why didn;t she say anything about it.

All in all another great show, can't wait to see what happens next.

I absolutely love Smash's mother, right down to her fingernails...her character is so real and genuine.

I love Grandma too, her role is so real also. She may not be all there, but she surely recognizes that her son is leaving her, even if she doesn't know the dire circumstances.

Serensen asking coach for some compliments for his throw, and the coach gives it to him offhandedly....but he did get some.

Serensen in the previews is going to be something....too much of the wrong attention!!!!

KScott, that was a great scene at the diner. I just think it’s so great how he is with these kids. I’m afraid that it will all come crashing in on him though.

The actress that plays Grandma Saracen is flawless. Flawless.

Love Smash’s mom too. I was going to comment on the perfection of her fingernails! Heh. It’s the little things like that on this show that make it SO much better than every other show on television.

I think Coach is a little hesitant to put too much trust into anybody right now. Jason’s suing him. Smash is taking ‘roids. The thing with Voodoo. The thing with Reyes. I was happy to see that he did look over Matt’s plays and had enough faith in him to let him try one of them out. And SO happy it worked. His comment to Matt to keep his head on straight… That comes into play next week I guess.

I love this show too..I said to myself UH OH...this is going to come back and bite Coach...but I knew he wasn't going to kick him off either...

I like Tyra but I like her being alone for now. I like how the Coach's wife told him how it was going to be and did it anyway. I have the same sort of minor issue with dbf and mgbf.

I like Julie too...the poor girl next week...maybe she should hit Tim as revenge

I love Herc he is a great actor.

And Buddy G....I too love and hate him..the actor is perfect at his role too...you know he is going to find out about Smash somehow...I thought he was going to give Tim $$ to find out...although he still may use him hiring Tyra's mom as leverage to get info out of Tim

Glow, I love reading your recaps.

I loved when they cut to the practice field and Coach was quoting the pschologist to the players. And his assistant coach lives by the advice of Dr. Suzy Psychologist (can't remember her name). Too funny!

I sure hope this business with Smash doesn't jump up and bite Coach on the butt.

And Buddy Garrity is a pig.

That is all.

I love Taylor Kitsch. It was originally a purely physical thing because he's tremendously beautiful. But it's so much more than that now. He's becoming such a great actor. Watching him with Brett Cullen (another great actor added to the show) was joyous. The ending with the Riggins boys and their dad was gorgeous. "I was ten, dad. I wasn't blind." Heartwrenching. If I was a rally girl, I would make an entire 365 day calendar of #33.

And Minka Kelly! wow! This show. I didn't cringe when Lyla was on the screen. Lyla talking to Jason about their future was very mature. Good for her.

Julie and Tyra! Julie, Tyra, and Grandma Saracen was sweet and perfect. Grandma needed her toes painted and some girl time.

When Coach called Smash into his office and told him he was starting at tailback and Smash just stood there. "You waitin for a hug or something?" Brilliant. Coach and Smash playing football with the kids? Freaking stunning. (I LOVE the camera work on this show. Freaking LOVE it.)

And just when I thought I'd make it through an episode tear-free (though I did choke up a bit with Timmy and Daddy, Coach and Jason, and Smash and Momma), Matt made Julie cry.

I want Landry!!!!!!!!!!

Smash and Riggins. You just knew that tension had to show itself again. I love the continuity. It’s amazing.
Grandma Saracen’s Julie sign. How freaking cute was that?
Matt picking Julie, “Julie please. Please?” And running in front of her down the field for the touchdown.
Landry making the goal sign in Tim’s face
Yay Landry! So awesome to see him back. (Maybe he was filming a movie or something?) Yelling at coach on the sidelines was so hilarious.
The little forum thingy that Tami held at school and the breakdown when she came home. Connie Britton is television royalty.
The whole scene at the Taylor household when Julie came back from practice. Coach “don’t break this trust” and then having a complete turnaround “Matt Saracen has you at quarterback?” Awesome. They’re exactly like a real family. Best television family ever.
Mac’s comments were ack!. Insinuating that white people are smarter than black people? Yikes. I realize that Smash wears “blinders” (He said that in the very first episode, people! I love this show.) when it comes to racism but I still don’t understand how the backlash wasn’t immediate.
Brilliant writing though with the reporters dragging the outrageousness out of him. The more he tried to explain himself the worse it got.
The scene with Smash and his mother in the bank was awesome. She’s so perfect in this role.
When Tyra came into the car dealership and was calling out for her mom and she wasn’t answering I was terrified that she’d walk in on her and icky Buddy Garrity doing icky stuff. I almost wanted to close my eyes. Why doesn’t she confront her mom about the situation? She obviously thinks (knows) there’s something going on there.
Jason, don’t quit school!

I just saw this episode.

I too loved the whole Powder Puff game, especially the Julie sign. The fact that the writers put that in there, I think, really shows the completeness of the writing. And I agree about everything you said. Especially about Smash, and his mother. She is such a tremendous actress. A real shining star.

I will watch the next one tomorrow.

'Friday Night' Fights
It's fourth and long for the critically acclaimed football drama, as ''Friday Night Lights'' battles to stay both on the field and on the air

LAST-SECOND HEROICS The Lights team keeps its eyes on the goal: A second season, and new opportunity to win over the fans
FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS PHOTOGRAPH BY JUSTIN STEPHENSBy Ken Tucker Ken Tucker

Ken Tucker is critic-at-large for EWIt's a perfect twilight evening in Del Valle, a quiet stretch on the outskirts of Austin, Texas. The glowing dark blue sky is illuminated by the lighting of the impeccable green football stadium — a field recently refurbished from a sagging, waist-high weed trap near a dingy trailer park. Here the actors, directors, producers, and crew of Friday Night Lights are living out the story of their own TV show: Every week, a hardy band of headstrong youngsters and stressed adults comes together in this small Texas town to face down the competition.

In the NBC drama, based on H.G. Bissinger's 1990 nonfiction book and director Peter Berg's 2004 film, it's the Dillon Panthers, led by football coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler), and featuring underdog quarterback Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford); a flashy, mouthy running back who's shooting up steroids, Smash Williams (Gaius Charles); and the loose-cannon longhair fullback Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch), who's as likely to punch an opponent as to block him.

In real life, Lights is the underdog series that a rah-rah cult audience and critics love, but one that can't find even a modest victory in the ratings. It consistently finished third in its original Tuesday-at-8 p.m. time period, and isn't doing much better in its new Wednesday-at-8 p.m. slot, still averaging around 6 million viewers. Indeed, the drama of whether NBC will commit to a second season of this gridiron soap opera is as awkward and tense as whether the wheelchair-bound former star quarterback Jason Street (Scott Porter) will break up with his devoted but conflicted cheerleader girlfriend Lyla Garrity (Minka Kelly). NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly professes love for the show but also cites ''the biggest disconnect'' he's ever experienced: ''People talk and write to me to say they love it, but not enough people watch. It's a sports show, but it's a relationship show; it's a soap, but it's got social issues. What makes it great makes it hard to market.''

On this, yes, Friday night in Texas, coexecutive producer Jeffrey Reiner is directing a scene in which the Panthers are getting off the team bus, returning home from a game. As usual, the shot hasn't been rehearsed, there are three cameras capturing the action on the fly (''Find Saracen!'' barks Reiner into his microphone to the camera operator), and the script is more an outline than a blueprint. When one player reports to Kitsch's Riggins that a rival player said he ''got a few licks in'' on the Panthers' quarterback, Riggins' retort doesn't quite have the snap Reiner wants, so he suggests a comeback: ''Say, 'Tell him to come into the shower room and I'll give him a few licks.''' Director and actor snicker over the line, and Kitsch works it into the next take. A few minutes later, Coach Taylor's daughter, Julie, played by Aimee Teegarden, meets Gilford's Matt at the bus (the two have a fumbling romance going). Matt leans over to give Julie a sweet little kiss, and Reiner wants another take — but not before a request for some breath mints goes out to a production assistant. Who needs them? The PA confides wryly, ''Aimee was like, 'Zach — really! Whew!'''

Fresh breath is in greater supply, though, when it comes to filming Lights. Reiner describes the unorthodox, intimate shooting style as ''no rehearsals, no blocking, just three cameras and we shoot.'' ''This is a perfect way to begin as an actor,'' says Chandler (who broke through as a twentysomething heartthrob in the 1991-93 WWII-era series Homefront) of the young cast. ''They don't have to hit marks and be locked into where to stand for a certain camera angle. They just do it and the camera finds them.''

That approach stems from the Peter Berg Mantra — the combination pep talk and manifesto the feisty director (The Rundown) gave after he'd shot the pilot for the series and was heading back to Los Angeles to work on other projects. Everyone you talk to on the Friday Night Lights set wants to tell you his or her version of the speech. Gilford says Berg told the cast, '''Look, guys, this is your show. Don't let directors come down here and push you around. You know how the show works and that's how you have to do it.''' Connie Britton, who plays Kyle Chandler's wife and the high school's guidance counselor, recalls Berg saying, '''You guys, don't ever let be static, always change it up.''' Charles says Berg's catchphrase is '''Nobody pushes us around.''' And according to Chandler, ''He gave us rules: Know your character 110 percent, know your dialogue when you come to the set, and then be prepared to throw it all out. That's what makes this show what it is. He said to me and Jeffrey , 'You guys, f--- with — poke 'em and prod 'em.' So it set the precedent that we were all on an even level, which is really cool.''

Berg, speaking from L.A., where he's editing his upcoming feature The Kingdom, laughs when told of his varied words of wisdom. ''I hope I didn't put it that harshly, but I may have. My message was, This is good material: Protect it.''

But the one thing that cast and crew seem unable to protect themselves against is low ratings. Reiner, like everyone else on the Texas set, is baffled as to how to boost viewership, suggesting that in tackling themes such as teen sexuality and steroid use, FNL is not an 8 o'clock show. (Chandler grimaces: ''That means it's on at seven here in Austin — people aren't finished doing the dishes by then.'') Reiner asks, ''Do you think the are because it's a football show in Texas?''

The less-than-stellar history of TV sports dramas would seem to confirm this, but Reiner insists that FNL ''is not any more a football show than One Tree Hill is a basketball show.'' Chandler concurs: ''This is the first show where I've played an adult with a family. I've been married for 10 years now, with two kids, and I get to use all that in the show. It goes way beyond football stories.'' Still, some obvious cross-promotions couldn't have hurt: say, Chandler getting chummy with John Madden in the NBC Sunday Night Football booth.

Then again, with its glowing portrait of a marriage — Chandler and Britton have a lovely chemistry, bickering and cooing without snideness or sap — plus strong young female characters like Kelly's Lyla and tough-gal siren Tyra (South Beach's Adrianne Palicki), Lights' promotion really ought to be reaching out to women. Britton, who's reprising her role from the feature film, says, ''If I thought of it as a football show, I wouldn't be doing this role. And if I thought of it as a teenage-angst show, I wouldn't be doing this role. I was really straight with about that,'' she explains. ''But he left this message on my phone saying, 'Connie, I promise this character is going to be complex and sexy and strong and f---ed-up,' and after that, I couldn't say no.''

''So many people come up to me and say 'I love the show and I hate football,''' says Gilford. '' marketing isn't my job. After the first three episodes I decided there's nothing I can do about the ratings as long as I'm doing my job and not sucking at it.''

So whose job is it to properly promote this baby? Ring, ring! It's executive producer Brian Grazer, calling the Texas set from L.A., bubbling effusively about the ''sexiness'' of the series. He cites other projects he's had a hand in producing; Fox's 24, for example, ''took until the middle of year 3'' to break through. He compares FNL to his Eminem epic 8 Mile. Huh? One pictures Grazer in Hollywood, his trademark spiky hair bristling with enthusiasm, and suddenly the gap between the industry and this series, set deep in the marrow of working-class Texas, seems vast.

NBC's Reilly comes tantalizingly close to committing to a second season, without quite doing so: ''I feel as if we'd have a better shot at reintroducing it to a bigger audience next season — put it out on DVD, let people catch up with it in reruns, and hope it pops next year.''

That's the game plan Coach Taylor certainly would like to implement. ''It's gonna be difficult for me, when I go back to do ,'' says Chandler, ''but for it's gonna be downright foreign. I know when I go back into the real world I'm gonna be shocked at how much time can be wasted in making a regular show.''

Which is all the more reason to ask: Who will save this gloriously not-regular show?

85. "2/14/07 Episode #16"
Happy Valentine’s Day to me!

“Black Eyes and Broken Hearts”

Is it possible that this was my favorite episode? I think it just might be. Every time I think it can’t get any more perfect or brilliant and shiny, it outdoes itself. I feel sorry for the people not watching this show. I say those of us that are watching, encourage our friends and family to catch the repeats. Buy the DVD set when it comes out too. I’m broke but I’m going to start saving pennies to do just that. I’ll be running to the store the day it’s released.

“Will you be my girlfriend?” gah! Is that not the cutest thing ever?

Herc backing the truck up while Jason was kissing Lyla goodbye was one of the best scenes of the night.
Can’t help but wonder what Jason’s parents have to say about him heading out to Austin.
Jason not wanting Lyla to drive at night… awwww.

Tami and Julie fighting over Julie’s BFF Tyra were so profoundly realistic. Unbelievable how good this show is sometimes.

Landry feeling the sparks with Tyra? Ha! “Tyra and I”
Crucifictorious t-shirt!

The cops pulling the bus over? My heart was pounding!

Coach talking to Guidance Counselor Tami, Wife Tami and Friend Tami was such perfection it makes me weepy. “Is there anybody else I can talk to?” “The three of you scare me.”

The old lady in the jewelry store trying not to laugh at Landry and Saracen. And then giving Matt a break in the price. Again, the bit part actors on this show are even brilliant.

The scene in Coach’s office with Coach and Mac… You know how you would feel if you walked in on that conversation by accident? That’s how I felt. Like I was uncomfortable and I was hearing stuff I wasn’t supposed to hear.

Tim and the JV players. Making them put back their lunches. Even the kid that brought his own. Ha! Awesome.
Tim telling Smash he’s not a leader and then proving why he is. Awesome.
I got a little hot when Tim jumped on that dude and started beating the crap out of him. *fans self* I love me some bad boy. And good for him for sticking up for his teammate.
The whole game was fun. Whoa facemask! Whoa pass interference! I was yelling at the TV like I was watching my Steelers.

Waverly makes me uncomfortable. Smashmomma listening to the conversation between her and Smash was gorgeous. There should be Emmys flying all over the place at the FNL studios.

So we had more Landry and we found out why Matt calls him annoying. Gah I wanted to strangle him at the Landing Strip.

I don’t like the direction they’re taking Tyra in.

When the were all in jail! Oh man. I was so wondering what was going to happen with Matt. “My grandma’s here?” awww.
“our perp” ha!

The scene with them all getting on the bus and then Tami tells Coach to turn around and here come Smash and the others. *tears* It was such a gorgeous scene. I friggin love the camera work on this show. Brilliant.

I cannot wait until next Wednesday. If all of television was as good as this show… I don’t know. I just know it’s not possible. Perfection.

Can't say it enough, this is the best show since My So Called Life and it may be taking over the lead in my eyes.

This is my favorite show..........best written, best delivered. Most realistic.

"Let's go in and get our perp!!!!" "The 3 of you scare me."
Does it get any better???? When I think it can't, there's a new episode that does!!!!

Glad Matt and Julie and back together, Julie doesn't rebound so well especially when hooking up with Tyra.

"He made a mistake, like I did", fabulous writing.....

Tim not letting the JV guys have lunch....

This show has to make it....what does it take, besides a little advertising. If I were NBC, I would have them making the rounds of all NBC talk shows.

Glowie, every week I look forward to your take on the episode. I love that you love this show as much as I do.

The story line for Mac was awesome. I moved to East Texas in 1973, only 4 years after they had finally integrated the schools. My home town is probably about 50/50 black-white ratio. When Mac went to see the coach at his home and so humbly tried to explain himself I could totally understand where he was coming from. That's not to say that I feel the way he does but I know older people who have had to deal with how they were raised versus how things have changed. It is a shift in thinking and requires putting away all preconceived or taught notions that you have about people that are different from you, even if it's only skin color. My heart broke for him when he tried to talk to Smash after that and Smash rebuffed him.

I loved that Mac stepped in and challenged the officer on whether he had a warrant or not. And Smash walking up to him and asking ever so humbly what happened, and Mac replying ever so humbly that the officer had made a mistake just like he did. Proves that we are never too old to learn and change.

Did I mention that I love this show?

I agree I loved the Mac scene at the Coach's house

dbf said if he had just apologized like that on camera everything would have been fine...I said that's what makes this show sooooo great...he would never do that on camera bc it would show him too vulnerable. I knew he would come thru at the end for Smash somehow. That line "He made a mistake just like I did" had me bawling!!

I agree they need to get these people on the TODAY and TONITE shows!

Glowie...I love "My so called life" too I fell in love with Jared Leto then...I also liked Freaks and Geeks!

LAST EDITED ON 02-22-07 AT 10:42 AM (EST)

Episode 1-17 “I Think We Should Have Sex”

New favorite episode. Seriously. I have no idea how they do it. Each episode is better and more real. Just when you think it isn’t possible that it could get better, it does. How is a show this amazing and this gorgeous not watched by everybody in the world?

When Timmy was on screen last night, I started to weep. What this show has done for him is so incredible. The scene with his dad where he confronted him about the camera was gorgeous. (Side note: The Riggins boys have a pool?!?! Why do they not show Timmy swimming in every episode?) The transformation from pretty boy model to award-worthy actor has been so beautiful to watch. I am so in love with this show. I want to marry Peter Berg and have his bebbies. BRILLIANT.

Connie Britton? I am in total awe of this woman. The sex talk and the yelling and the tears between Tami and Julie was PERFECT. That’s how it happens. It’s not all understanding and afterschool specialy. Kyle Chandler is *squeeeeee* absolutely perfect in his role as Coach Taylor. There could never be anybody else to play Eric and Tami Taylor. They are amazingly beautifully perfect. Tami has given us another clue to her teenage years. Remember when she told Tyra she used to be just like her? And tonight she says the talk her mom had with her about sex didn’t work and she seemed to be talking to Julie from experience.

Matt and Julie. How cute are they? She just blurts out “I think we should have sex.” And he’s all fast nodding and taken by surprise. I’m glad they didn’t do it. “Please don’t touch me right now.” They fell asleep! I was horrified when they showed them sleeping. The first words out of Coach’s mouth when she got home, “Are you alright?” PERFECTION.

Tyra telling Julie she didn’t have to do it made me forgive some of the other stuff she’s been doing.
AWESOME.

Timmy getting beat up was almost not possible for me to watch. I wanted to close my eyes but I knew I’d miss something brilliant if I did. He didn’t even try to fight back. He just let the guy beat him up. I can’t even write about it without crying. I was so touched and glad to see that Tyra brought Billy with her. They always have his back. Oh! And when he took the camera back to Coach… that scene made me cry and I don’t think it meant to. I just couldn’t help it. I want Timmy to have parents. *sob* He stuck up for his dad and then had to find out he’s a filthy no good liar just like Billy has been trying to tell him. Daddy Riggins saying “look how easy this is” and leaving? *sob* And his dad has brought him back to drinking again to the point where Tyra thinks it’s becoming a problem. I’m worried about him. He needs somebody to help him!!!!!!!! I wish Coach would have gone after him and made him come in the house. And I wish Tyra would have quit her job on the spot to help him when he was pleading to her with his eyes. (ohmygod how wonderful he is) Billy telling the asshat, “he’s just a kid,” was gorgeous. Billy isn’t much older but he’s had to be Tim’s caregiver and father figure. Man, this show.

Tyra’s mom. Yikes. Tyra has enough to deal with without her mom embarrassing her in front of everybody in town. Buddy Garrity! Icky icky icky. I loved how they showed Lyla being all WTF? when he showed affection to his wife. So we know that’s something that doesn’t happen often. With the combination of that and then Tyra’s mom flipping out on him, Lyla’s mom knew he screwed around on her. I’m guessing it’s not the first time he’s done that. Tyra has said that he is her sister’s best customer. He’s gross and I don’t want him living with the Taylors!

Jason’s getting a tattoo? He’s really making quite a transformation. What will happen to Lyla?

Side note: If I go to Texas am I going to see a bunch of teenagers bar hopping? Is that allowed in Texas?

I CANNOT wait for the Emmys.

ETA: The scene at football practice! Matt talking to everybody about having sex with Julie. Timmy: "remember your first time driving?" Matt: "yeah. I crashed my grandma's car and now Landry drives me everywhere." Timmy: "good luck with that, seven." Loved it! Both Matt and Tim mentioned Bradley in this episode. Remember that name because he's about to have a storyline.

Dear Peter Berg,

I am now thinking that if this show is canceled, I will be heart broken. For one hour each week I can put everything else aside and just take this amazingly gorgeous show in. It makes me feel better. I want it to be on forever.

I love that you believe in these actors so much and give them a chance. Taylor Kitsch should win an award and it’s because of you.

I love you.

Sincerely,
Glowie

P. S. Please show Timmy in the pool.

Isn't it a shame that so many people don't even give this show a chance? They never think about watching it?

THEY ARE MISSING OUT!!! One of the most realistic shows on TV right now. So well scripted and acted.....perfection.

ps Glowie, you think the Emmy's will even notice this show?

"I love you Julie....um, what?.....So do I" that....was...adorable!!

I love this show...I think last nite it became my favorite (non-reality--I love Survivor) show even over Heroes bc I care about the characters so much more and the acting is tremendous

Glowie, I thought of you everytime they showed Tim.

I like that Jason is finding someone new...Lyla and him are not going to make it...exactly how it would progress IRL.

I loved the scene with Julie and her mom when Julie says they are thinking about having sex. Julie starts to grin and Tami says "don't you smirk at me right now, I am very upset. You are not allowed to have sex". That whole scene was great.

Tim and his dad was sad indeed, I just wanted to go and give him a great big hug.

I knew Tyra's mom was going to bob Buddy, that is just gross.

Have you gone to their web-site and watched the deleted scenes? They are pretty good. Please let this show stay on...

I haven't watched the deleted scenes lately but it's on my to do list. (I can't watch them from work and I don't log on from home very often.) I think the last ones I watched were when Matt Daddy was still there. Matt and Julie sitting on the porch steps talking about the feed store.

LAST EDITED ON 02-22-07 AT 08:38 PM (EST)

I just thought this was interesting.

28 Jason/Scott Porter
25 Matt/Zach Gilford
24 Smash/Gaius Charles
27 Lyla/Minka Kelly
24 Tyra/Adrianne Palacki
26 Tim/Taylor Kitsch
17 Julie/Aimee Teegarden
18 Landry/Jesse Plemons
31 Billy/Derek Phillips

If this show continues for the next couple of years, some of these will have to go as they graduate from high school.

Have I mentioned that I love this show.

I was in tears last night when Tim went to fight with the bar guy and then when he showed up at coach's house with the camera. I also wanted coach to go after him and bring him in the house.

I loved the whole scene when Julie came home and they DIDN'T fight. What a contrast in parenting styles between the Taylors and Daddy Riggins/jerk.

I have been very aware of TK's age since this show the first time I saw him shirtless and sprawled out on the couch. I had to make sure I didn't have to feel guilty for the thoughts that went through my head.

I knew Aimee was young and Zach was around Taylor's age. But Scott and Minka... I had no idea. I'd have never guessed they were the oldest of the high schoolers.

114. "Arkiegrl, you are rocking with the sigpics...."
While glancing at the Off Topics, I saw a post requesting someone to do a sigpic of a FNL collage. Someone else wanted to know what the picture was.

Arkiegrl, if it's not a ton of trouble, and if anyone else thinks it's a good idea, could you take off my name, and put something like "Watch Friday Night Lights, you'll be glad you did", or something like that? or just "Friday Night Lights, Wednesday on NBC".

I wonder if this wouldn't be a good way to advertise this fabulous show, we know what the pictures are, but we really need to advertise, this show is at risk for cancellation.

Arkiegrl, I don't know how much trouble that is, or if it's possible, or if anyone else thinks this is a good idea. Please don't think I am unappreciative, I love the efforts you did with my sigpic, and I am proud of it. I don't want to create a lot of work either, but would love to support FNL and let people know about this great show.

Again, do be up set with me, it's just an idea.

thank you Arkiegrl!!!

116. "2/28/07 - Episode #18"
I loved this moment:
(nice pic, Shar) I was on the edge of my seat.

Tyra was great in this episode. I’m back on the Tyra boat. I loved the scenes with Tyra and Tami. Tami was Tyra and now she’s her new project. Tyra with her mom. “If you’re watching this and thinking about Buddy Garrity, I’m going to have to take your life… and then my own.”

I miss the Landry with the funny lines. I’m not loving annoying Landry. His crush on Tyra is funny but he’s so childish and annoying about it.

I was loving me some Lyla in this episode too! Feisty. She deserved to get out and go all crazy. Why wasn’t anybody at home wondering where she was? I thought her acting was great on this episode too. I loved when she started wiping the tattoo. “Is this real?!?! {{wipe wipe wipe}}” Loved seeing her stand up for herself. Her talk with Jason made me cry. “You’re changing and I’m not changing with you.” Then in bed, Jason goes, “Victory!” heh. Awww. Oh! And her in the beginning with little brother and sister was hard to watch. Poor kids. So hard for them.

Waverly. Wow. I didn’t see that coming. I knew something was up with her but not this manic depressive stuff. This is really going to make Smash grow up. All too real. Powerful storyline. Take your meds, Wavey. I’m afraid of where this might go. I’ve said before that she makes me uncomfortable.

Bo. Ha. Tim was blowing him off because he was all hungover. “please stop talking” Fixing her gutters. The picture on the refrigerator. How cute is he? I am in love with this character. Brilliant. Last week he had me wincing and hiding my face because he wouldn’t fight back and this week he’s freaking adorable. Not looking forward to the affair between him and Brooke Langton though. The party in the beginning and her threatening to call the cops. He’s all whatever, the cops won’t be too hard on us football heroes celebrating our awesome victory. Awesome.

Julie and Matt. We see this stubbornness rising in her. “Nothing is going to stop me from seeing you.” Yikes.

The whole thing with Buddy barging in on the Taylors was scary. He’s scary. The interaction between Julie/Coach/Tami about Buddy was hilarious.

I am HORRIFIED about this TMU thing. They're not setting us up for the end are they? eep. hold me.

More later. Gotta do some work now.

Another great episode!! I was almost getting worried that they started too many storylines, but as an avid fan, I was able to put my arms around all of them.

Buddy Garrity, ugh.....I am totally shocked that Coach didn't throw his sorry @ss out the door when he said he manipulated the note pad. How dare he sneak around someone's home and get into their business as if it were his.

And his response to coach about Panther football....disgraceful. We have no man here.

But you all know Buddys exist in the real world I think the actor is great!! me and dbf were wondering why he didn't just got to hotel and then it came out that he had to be there to get TMU info and start the Dillon Machine chugging about it

Yes the Lyla thing was great..introducing herself as his fiance'...when she never did that before...her jealousy and her "I see you changing.." He is and she is not and the rel is doomed and we get to see it...great!

WOOT!! Tim is going to be with an older woman...Glow, I thought to myself...I wonder if Glow had a kid and moved to Texas and didn't tell me Love little Bo!!

Aah thanks Glowie...the m/d thing I didn't quite register..I thought it was illegal drugs (she was in a hospital for her md not drugs) and maybe I just didn't want to see it. There is nothing to be scared about though it does bring up lots of things in me too. This is not an easy thing to deal with for anyone esp. as a hs senior..my mother had was hospitalized in the beg of my senior yr and I had to take care of my little sis who was 8 at the time (who was ultimately dxed with it too )...so it will be interesting to see what Smash does...I say he initially runs from it bc I wanted to run from it but I couldn't...he can...it should be good story

oh yeah, AQ. A lot went on last night. I was just talking to a friend (brvnkrz) and she said her mom tried to make her watch it but she fell asleep. eep. She also said she didn't like Lyla. I had to snicker because last night was the first time I felt that much love for her. I guess this is the kind of show you have to follow from the beginning to fully appreciate it. And last night was probably the absolute worst episode for somebody to watch the show for the first time. That's a bummer.

What did Wavery's father say to Smash? I was doing laundry and missed that part. She definately needs to take her meds, she is getting kinda out there.

Tyra and Julie's mom was great, Tyra - What are you going to do make me your next project? Tami - Yeah.

Julie is soooo reminding me of my 15 year DD old right now, I bet she wishes I was more like Tami.

Lyla and Jason, so they finally scored huh?

Tim - just so nice to look at and the way he was with the little boy was so cute.

Coach - will he take the offer? I don't think so and how dare you think they may be setting us up for the end, shame on you!!!

Buddy is just gross!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He asked Smash to tell him if Waverly was acting differently.

And one of the things that happens so often with m/d is that you feel ok and don't think you need to take your meds. Then you'll usually go into manic stage and think you are invincible and don't need any meds and/or depressive stage and not be able to do anything but lie there/sit there etc.

More research needs to be done into this and better meds need to be produced (although they have made some great strides). After my mother passed away, we were contacted by Un of Pgh and donated some of my mother's brain for research for better meds. Mental illness needs to get put out there just like any other disease like heart disease, etc. There should be no stigma. But I do concede that they are scary and troubling and do have a profound impact on persons, families and loved ones. I'm glad that they are doing this story. I think I was just so hung up on the drug thing with Smash...steroids I thought she was on illegal drugs and in a clinic, not hospitalized for her manic depression.

When I said I'm afraid of this storyline, it wasn't because I'm afraid of mental illnesses. Well... I mean, I have experience with them. Not like you do, but I do know how they can go and if they take this road, it will be heartbreaking to watch. I thought for sure she was at some baby-having place far away so as not to shame Pastordaddy.

And yes, Brad Leland is awesome as Buddy. Of course. There isn't a bad actor on this show. Ms. Melrose Place will have to step up a few notches if she expects me to notice her when my TK is on the screen.

I have been afraid of mental illness too, but I have realized over many years that it's the illness I was afraid of not the fact that it was mental illness...I'd be afraid of cancer too if that's what plagued my family (which it does sort of, too. yikes, but not as much as mental illness has). When people ask me what happened to my sister I tell them...if it's someone who I wouldn't want to know even if it was cancer I say "she was sick" but I don't beat around the bush and not tell people. ALthough right after she committed suicide last year I was conflicted.

See, I didn't think it was a baby...I thought like cocaine or heroin...which so many teens are in trouble with.

And I agree...they should use this in High School as a teaching aid.

Again. Afraid of where the storyline will go not the subject.

I'm very worried about Timmy's character too. I keep hoping for someone to come along and prove to him that he has worth. That it isn't always easy to walk away. Maybe that's what Brooke Langton is doing there. If he falls for her and she breaks his heart, I will hunt her down and kill her. *sigh*

Jason and Lyla... discuss.

I'm buying this the very second it comes out on DVD. If I ever do decide to have kids, I'm just going to let this show raise them.

I loved the hug at the end of the episode, when your child calls you for help even when caught in the midst of defiance, you know you've done something right. Nothing needed to be said...just a good reassuring hug. Julie's learning, she's growing up.

I also loved it when Connie told Tyra that she needed someone to blame....how often people do that without recognizing it, muchless admitting to it.

I swear, this show would be great to be used in a high school sociology class or something. They deal with a little bit of everything.

(I stole this post from NBC's FNL site

A Chicago newspaper, RedEye, is doing a NCAA-bracket-ish showdown of the 32 best characters on television. One of them is Smash Williams, who right now is against Lynette Scavo of "Desperate Housewives."

I think it would be cool if we could get Smash to win this deal. It's his own personal playoff game -- but right now he's behind in the voting, and there's no way Desperate Housewives should beat FNL.

You don't have to register to vote, so it's really easy -- but you have to do it by 4 p.m. on March 12. Visit:

http://redeye.chicagotribune.com/red-chara...l=red-slideshow

And click on #15 to get to the voting page. Let's get Smash to the next round! Thanks.

138. "3/21/07 Episode #19 "Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes""
My favorite scene from this show to date was contained in this episode. I'm not sure this was my favorite episode but the scene with the boys hanging out on the field and Jason started coaching Saracen was just perfect. And I loved the Tim and Jason makeup. Tim + Jason = BFF!!
Smash and Matt passed out on the field and Tim goes to Jason, "That's so brokeback."
And "I just tried to make out with my next door neighbor and she's clearly in her mid-thirtes, so I win." Then Jason's all, "wheelchair. Wheelchair always wins."

Shame that the beer dude wouldn't sell to Jason because he's not on the team anymore. "Sgt. Riggins" Obviously he knows who Tim is. Doesn't everybody in Dillon?

Tyra's storyline this episode was heart breaking. How sad for her that her mother tells her she can't go to college. They were cute at the dance though. I kept waiting for her mother to do something horribly embarassing.

Every scene with the Taylors was awesome.

There was nobody else that could give Jason a ride home from Austin? Like maybe his parents?
What is going to become of Lyla? Everything is spiraling out of control for her.

Tim with the neighbor woman is bad. Just bad. He's seventeen! I mean, I get it, he's hot as all get out but.he.is.a.kid. (Taylor Kitsch on the other hand is plenty old enough to stir these feelings in me.)

more later. Back to work.

I thought the best lines was from Bo

"Tim Riggins is teaching me how to kick some major A$$!"

I loved this episode. I too loved the part with Jason teaching Matt...QB coach anyone? that's what I immediately thought now that he is not going to Beijing.

Also I thought...Lyla is turning into Tyra and vice versa. I felt so bad for Lyla this ep. but I do not think that they should be engaged.

The kiss was expected btw Jason and tattoo lady. Also btw Mrs. Robinson and Tim. Would they do this same story tho with Lyla, say? I don't think so.

I am interested how they are going to deal with Waverly...only thru how Smash deals with it...and I thought his reaction was completely on point and he would def. call her crazy Waverly. When she said suicidal...I thought uh oh, is that coming? It was a bit much for me this week...this sunday is 1 year

Interesting twist. Your assistant QB coach just so happens to be suing you. hmmm.

oh yeah, the kiss with Jason and tattoo chick was totally expected. I was just hoping he wouldn't. She is hot though and totally different than what he's used to I would assume. As far as Tim and the hot neighbor lady goes, I was just hoping that it wouldn't happen. (I talked to the television with that scene... "back off, lady. He's seventeen.") Hoping against hope with both of those I suppose.

I don't think they'd do the May/December thing with Lyla. Though we did see a bit of it with Tyra. (anybody remember Conner and California?)

Two different scenes pointed to possible suicide attempts. Waverly and Buddy (when he said he has no reason to live without his family or something of the sort). {{emy}}

I loved this episode. Tyra's mother is afraid that her daughter will do better than she did. Not all parents want better for their children - it it was good enough for me then it's good enough for you. I did love when she took her to the dance and started dancing with her and told her how much she loved her.

I watched the movie for the first time last night and I was blown away. It was spectacular! I loved the kid who played the QB, Wenchell. He's the equivalent of Matt. What a heartbreaking moment at the end of the game. I sat in my chair and sobbed with him.

I've spent some time this morning over at the NBC message boards and found something interesting. Even if NBC wants to keep this show alive, its affilliates may just manage to kill it anyway. This new episode was pre-empted in at least 3 states to show various local programming. But Medium (re-run) which was on at 10pm was shown. Go figure.

I know it seems a little twisted but it is a small town view. I had a dad who was a little bit like this. If he couldn't offer it to us then nobody could.

I like to think that Tyra's mom is a little better than that. Some of those feeling may stem from pride, embarassement, etc.

It's obvious that she loves Tyra but the question will be does she love Tyra more than she cares about her pride.

Glad you like the sig. I will see what I can do.

148. "Interesting DAW tidbit from the movie"
LAST EDITED ON 03-24-07 AT 03:50 PM (EST)

In the movie, Permian plays Marshall. I wondered if this were my home town but thought it unlikely because of how far apart they are and I didn't remember ever playing them when I was in high school. Then I read this on wikipedia.

In the movie, the top-ranked Permian Panthers defeated the hapless Marshall Bulldogs in a non-district game. In real life, the third-ranked Marshall Mavericks (whose colors are red and white, not purple and gold) won the game over fourth-ranked Permian 13-12. In the movie, the game is played on a Friday night in Odessa. In real life, it was played at Maverick Stadium in Marshall on a Saturday afternoon. Permian's football team chartered a jet for the 500+ mile trip from Odessa to Marshall, spawning controversy on the cost of the trip. Played before a crowd of more than 12,000 fans at Maverick Stadium, the game was on a searing September afternoon where the temperature topped 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38°C). The footage shown in the movie is from a game against the Midland High Bulldogs, who weren't mentioned in the movie. Permian defeated the Dawgs 42-0 in district play, but the two teams ended up in a three-way tie along with Midland Lee for the district title.

That would be my hometown. Go Big Red!

152. "Episode #20 "Mud Bowl""
LAST EDITED ON 03-29-07 AT 08:37 AM (EST)

Two more episodes. I'm hopeful that this reads: Two more episodes this season. I am so in love with this show.

And? I love when the show opens with shirtless Taylor Kitsch. But I don't need the Tim/Jackie story. He's 17!!! I know these writers will bring it home for me though. Billy had my favorite line this episode. "I may not have a PhD in stupid like you do..." If little Bo (Beau?) isn't supposed to know, maybe they shouldn't let him know that Tim sleeps over.

Smash and Waverly outside the Alamo Freeze was heart wrenching. When he hugged her from behind, the tears started flowing. I love that they are softening him up.

Waverly and Lyla is unexpected. I liked when Lyla told Smash he never bothered talking to her before she started hanging out with Wavy. Lyla needs a friend so I was glad to see them hook up.

Loved the scene where Lyla confronted Jason. She really hit him in the face with that cup! heh. Minka Kelly gets major props from me. She was perfect. (I feel bad about speaking negatively of her before.)

Odd that no mention was made of Lyla smashing up Buddy's dealership.
What's up with the money in the locker?

Looooooooove Coach Jason!
Jason negotiating that settlement was awesome. And his mother's face just showing that she is beginning to realize that he will be okay. "We're not here to win the lottery..." Awesome.

Matt and Landry are so fun. I love their scenes together.

Coach and Tami in the cow pasture was such a gorgeous scene. When that cow walked over to her and she started giggling? There is no way that was scripted. Brilliance.

Mud Bowl. Tyra attack. Both such intense scenes and they mixed them together. I was on the edge of my seat. I was holding my breath. I was nervous and horrified all at the same time. Very intense. My tears were flowing more than they ever have. Happy tears for the Panthers and concerned tears for Tyra and worried tears for Landry and horrified tears that this show may not be back.

Tyra and Landry after the attempted rape was gorgeous. They could have easily overstated (like any other show would do) that whole attack but they didn't. It was brilliantly edited. There was no build up to it. You had no idea it was coming and it came at you so fast. I was totally expecting Landry to the rescue. I'm so glad they didn't play that angle. They let her keep some dignity by defending herself. Should be easy to identify a guy with a car lighter shaped burn to his eye. Will this harden her more or soften her?
Landry's crush on her is adorable and now they have this connection. He's soon to find out that she is way more than he bargained for (or can handle) and his face at the end emoted that very well.

Panthers are going to State!!!!!!!!!

I hope NBC knows what they have here. This show has changed the way television is made. They all need to pay attention.

ETA: another seemingly unscripted gem of a moment. When Coach was talking to that other coach and he picked something off his shirt and they just continued on "thank you" "you're welcome" and they just kept on going with the scene. Brilliant!
Other Coach was fantastic. The look of respect he gave to Coach Taylor when the game was over and appreciating the reciprocation from CT. gah.
And Grandma Saracen! collecting at the gate with Tami! Been missing me some Grandma. ("water the children")
Jason Katims is a writing and producing GOD. Please don't take another television show from him. Don't take this show from the fans.

I agree this was a fantastic episode...why didn't bravie watch this one?!?

I KNEW IT--COACH JASON!!! When the coach and Jason talked in the hardware store, I knew they were going to settle the case but I didn't like how they did it bc it makes it appear that lawsuits are like winning the lottery and they are anything but...he had a legitimate claim. I understand that he wouldn't want to be "wheeled out like a cripple" but I don't think a 17 yr old would talk like ("this isn't a lottery") that not even Jason....but it's a common idea that people have and it just reinforces that what we do is somehow not on the up and up and we do not provide injured persons with a valuable service (it is and we do) (steps off of soapbox)

I would have loved to know the number he wrote down...I think I have an idea what it was tho...prob 1 mil

The Tyra scene was so unexpected and so well done...I had seen in my DVR in future eps that "Tyra's secret comes out" I had no idea what that meant (i thought she was pregnant!!) but this is so much better and they did it so she saved herself...she is the strongest girl character on the show imho. I can't wait to see what Landry does and if they get together bc of this.

Smash surprised me this week..he's trying to help Wavy but has no idea how to...Wavy's reaction was very good...I really sense something is going to happen and it's going to be baaaad.

Lyla is really a great character..I didn't like her to begin with either and I don't like her character all the time (hey, like IRL with most people you know!)...Minka Kelly is phenomenal.

I loved that first scene...I thought of you glowie when he looked and smiled in bed...I said "OMH Glowie must be dying here." I don't think they "told" Bo anything...I think he just saw him leave without Tim seeing it and Bo thinks it an innocent thing.

I too so wish that this show is renewed..if you watch the MudBOWL outtakes that shar posted...Aimme T is in the stands and she says Season 2! I hope so!!

156. "Episode #21 "Best Laid Plans""
This show continues to amaze. I read somewhere… There are two types of television viewers, those who love FNL and those who have never watched it. I love NBC’s commercials for it. I think a 2nd season is looking promising. Yes? OHMYGOD this show.

Landry breaks my heart. Skipping class to check on Tyra. Talking to Matt about it. He had me in tears minutes into the show (and I don't think they stopped for more than a minute at a time after that). His expression when he told Tami. The jealousy over seeing her with Tim. I didn’t like him bagging on Tim, but it was likely just a little fit of jealousy. The parallels between Tim/Landry and Brian/Jordan are unmistakably there. Gives further explanation why I love Tim Riggins/Taylor Kitsch so much.

Tyra. The scene in the police station. Taking pictures of her bruises. Her face when she saw Tami at her door and Landry sitting in the car. Her speech to Tim.

Oh Tim, you sweet beautiful boy. “How about Saracen sleeping with the coach’s daughter?” silence. Perfect. He was forced to be mature one minute and then went back to fun inappropriate Big Timmy Riggins. Jackie did the right thing. I’m glad she didn’t let it go any further. Bo. Heh. “since we’re obviously buds…” cute. Tim is making sure this kid has a male figure to look up to and Jackie inevitably makes that difficult for him to do. He can’t turn his back on Bo like has been done to him all too often. It’s forcing him to be more mature. The look on his face when he was interacting with Bo after Jackie told him they had to stop what they were doing made my tear ducts itchy. Then? I loved that he went to Tyra. She’s the first person he thinks of when he needs a friend. LOVE that. I’m wondering if, when he finds out what happened to her, he’ll go looking for the guy.

Lyla. Wow. I love this character. Didn’t see that coming. The look on her face when she walked up to Suzie’s truck and throwing the ring. I loved when she told Jason now she knows where they stand and not to come back. And when the Garritys were giving the divorce talk she said she would come back when Buddy left. Good for her.
Hello? She had a breakdown and trashed the dealership. And nobody even notices? Minka, I am so sorry I doubted you. You are as amazing and brilliant as the rest of them.

Scott Porter amazes me. The Eric/Jason/Matt scene in the coach’s office was brilliant. (won’t get into the flaws with Jason being AQBC)

Tami. She’s perfect. Smart, strong, gorgeous. The conversation in the living room had me in awe. I read a TV Guide interview with Kyle and Connie and it was just like Eric and Tami. (have to find the link) I loved at the end he asks if they’re done fighting and she’s all “yeah but I’m not moving to Austin.”

Julie. Heart-breaking. Her sweet little pouty face. When she went to Matt’s and the hug. Wow. But why couldn’t she sit with him at the banquet?

Buddy stealing Smash’s Saracen email joke. Smash’s reaction to Buddy stealing his joke. Buddy telling Eric “you got a good one here” and TOTALLY meaning it. Love/hate Buddy.

Smash. Wow. Telling the other girl no and the cake for Waverly. And his roast on Tim was hilarious.

Kept waiting to see VooDoo since they had Aldis Hodge in the guest starring credits. That’s who they’re playing for State, so assumedly we’ll see him next week.

Season finale? They better get this show out on DVD REAL soon.

OH, dear, oh dear!!!! I missed the first half hour, and from your synopsis, a lot went on!!! I hope they have it on-line.

I was thrilled to see that they're advertising "last episode of the season" "season finale" instead of "series finale".

Also, I, too, am disappointed that they never made mention again about Lila smashing the cars.....I can see Garrity wanting to have an investigation and then find out in front of officers, that the security cams show his daughter!!! Devastating ego stomping.

ETA: Ok, thanks to NBC, I was able to watch the first half of the show.

A few good lines: Street: "Julie's got a new girlfriend, and that friend is me".
Eric Taylor: "I'm immature".

(And did Julie and Matt have sex yet?)

No they didn't have sex yet...at least not shown and it would be...

I too am wondering abou the cars...and Minka is great!

I was crying too everytime Landry was on the screen. His speech was so poignant...I thought Tyra was going to run after him and kiss him...

It was weird before the show aired I was reading next week's TVGuide for next week (they are so pushing for a renewal ) and it said that Tami has a surprise in season finale...I said to dbf..."she's pregnant" then said no...it's just that she is telling him she's not going to Austin...and WOOT I was right...

I'm wondering whether they will leave it up in the air as to whether Eric is still going to go..in case they don't decide to renew but if they do I guess he won't be leaving and next year what happens to Tim and Smash they are seniors...Jason is now a coach (I knew it) so he'll be back...will Tim go to a local junior college? Smash to Southern Cal? And the injury to him in State...I wonder if they did that bc the "Smash" character in the movie was the injured one.

I forgot about her saying she was pregnant.....what a wonderful idea. Just adds a little to the family dynamics... Wouldn't it have been more of a cliffhanger if you saw Connie looking at a positive pregnancy test, as if it wasn't her own? Let us wonder if she found Julie's or Tyra's but not hers, and then spring it on us?!?

I love how Connie is a sounding board to all those who need her, and boy, do they need her!!! Garrity will be in her office soon!!! LOL

Landry is great....loved his speech to Tyra in the end....she really does need a clean cut guy who will respect her for more than her body.

I can't get over how funny they made Street while in the office, he picked up Coach's cue and ran with it...perfection in writing.

This show is too good to lose. I hope NBC airs the whole season during the summer or something so more can get hooked. I have talked to friends who said it was too hard to get involved in the middle of the season, I guess that is true since they've done such a good job of character development, however, people need to give it a chance, it will fall together for them. Heck, I had a hard time at the beginning remembering all the students' names.

Sorry, I'm late. I have been watching and loving, I've just been too busy to discuss.

Agree with pretty much everything you said.

The only angle I can think about them not bringing up the car smashing anymore is because it really only had to do with Lyla. She was angry. Angry at herself because of her affair with Jason. Angry about Jason's tattoo, the blonde girl giving him a ride, her suspicions, his immediate "nothing happened" answer, and then angry about finding out about Buddy's past mistake. It was to me about that.

I don't really think there's anywhere else for that particular incident to go.

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

In case you don't want to read the whole article, here is the blurb about FNL

Another high-profile NBC series whose future remains uncertain due to a ratings slump is Donald Trump's corporate reality show "The Apprentice," now in its sixth edition.

The same is true for NBC's new high school football drama "Friday Night Lights," which won a prestigious Peabody Award Wednesday, as well as NBC's long-running legal drama "Law & Order."

This is good right?!?!?!?

Last sentence Zach Gilford (Matt S) things look good for renewal

I read that 30 Rock getting renewed might be trouble bc they were both not great in ratings and they might not want to take a chance...but I think that's not quite right (i hope so) bc they are in different genres and the sitcom is so bad these days and 30 Rock is a good show that they figured that it is better than anything else...they should think the same thing about FNL...

NBC Orders New "Friday Night Lights" Scripts
Critically Acclaimed Freshman Show May Be Renewed Despite Low Ratings

"Friday Night Lights," the NBC drama about a high school football team in Texas, looked to be in danger of cancellation after it's first season drew critical raves, but failed to deliver big ratings numbers. Today, NBC surprised Hollywood insiders by ordering six new episode scripts from the "Friday Night Lights" creative team.

Although the network has not yet confirmed that it plans to produce any "Friday" episodes beyond this season's twenty two shows, the script order suggests that there is a strong possibility that NBC will bring "Friday Night Lights" back for a second season.

Earlier this week, NBC placed a similar six script order for "Medium," the psychic detective show featuring Patricia Arquette. The Monday order for "Medium" coupled with today's news for "Friday" may point to a new network strategy for decision making about which series to keep and which to drop. However, the comedy "30 Rock," which has history of critical praise and lackluster ratings, has been picked up for a second season at NBC without an interim script order.

"Friday Night Lights" is an ensemble driven, hour long drama. The cast is headed by Kyle Chandler (Early Edition) as Eric Taylor, the head coach for high school football team The Panthers. Connie Britton (Spin City) stars as Taylor's wife, a guidance counselor at the fictional Austin high school.

The show's premise found success and large audiences in several forms before hitting the small screen. The 1990 book "Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, And A Dream," a non-fictional account of the Permian High School football team in Odessa, Texas, made it to the number one spot on the New York Times Bestseller list. In 2004, a well-recieved silver screen adaptation of the book starred Billy Bob Thornton as the coach. For the move to television, writers and producers re-tooled the story, moving the scene from Odessa to Austin, and swapping out true-life names and stories for fictional characters and plots based loosely on the book and movie.

Earlier this year, the television series "Friday Night Lights" won the prestigious Peabody Award for Excellence. However, in terms of audience size, Nielsen ratings consistently place "Friday" in the bottom 50 shows in its time slot.

The series "Friday Night Lights" is co-produced by Imagine TV, NBC Universal Television Studio, and Film 44. Free, full episodes of the show are available streaming online at NBC.com

167. "Episode #22 - "State""
The locker room at Texas Stadium. When the boys first walked in there and saw their names. When they walked out to the field. Gorgeous.

The reporters. Hate them. What a horrible way for the whole team to find out.

Landry. “Hey Mindy, how’s the stripping going?” heh. Poor kid with a car full of women driving to Dallas. I love that he made Tyra get out and talk to Lyla. “Hey lying cheating cheerleader bitch, want a ride?... She doesn’t want a ride.” I didn’t know until it was about to happen how much I have been waiting for the Lyla/Tyra fest.

Matt. Matt. Matt was AMAZING. “I was with your daughter.” Yeah. What are you going to do about it? His confidence in that play that WON them the game. Leading the team in the clap for Coach. Yay Matt!

Julie. Defending Coach to Matt even though she is pissed at him herself.

Smash. Sticking up for Matt and standing by the Panthers. “I am a Panther.” Dislocated his shoulder and kept.on.playing. The little chat with Voodoo. Voodoo is HOT.

Tami. When she went into Planned Parenthood and Corrina took her back to give her the pregnancy test. “God changed his mind.”
Tami and Eric out on the balcony. “Pregnant like you’re going to have a baby pregnant?” Gah. They’re so beautiful.
Barefoot Tami standing on Eric’s feet. (the little details, people)
Coach’s halftime speech. Wow. “There are a few people out there who still believe in you. I want you to think about them.” And the camera pans to everybody from Dillon we’ve been introduced to over the season.

Grandma Saracen! “Is that Tyra? Did you bring the booze?” ha!

Buddy. OMG. Do I have a soft spot for Icky Buddy Garrity? To Lyla: “You can’t walk home. At least let me give you a ride.” To Coach: “I was just going to tell you I’m going to miss you.” To the Panther dinner crowd: “Coach Eric Taylor. My friend.”

Lyla. Buying a car from somebody else. Singing her heart out in the car. Throwing her uniform in the garbage.

Jason. Man. I have some issues with him being a paid coach but I can set those aside because Scott Porter is every shade of AWESOME. The “next season” talk he gave to the team at the end was perfect. The look up to his parents after the big win.

Tim. Timmy, my Timmy, oh how I love thee. Gave the tickets to Jackie. “They’re for Bo.” Billy (who seems to be spending a lot of time with Jackie) passing Bo off to Tim during the parade was touching. He chose his friendship with the boy over sex with the mom. His eyes telling Tyra he was sorry for giving the tickets away. Hello world. Let me introduce you to Taylor Kitsch. Again I say if there was no other reason to love this show, I would still love it for what it has done for him. He is brilliant.

“Devil Town” Mmmmm. I would so buy a Friday Night Lights (the television series) soundtrack. Maybe they can throw it in with the DVD set.

I know I sound like a broken record but this show… This show is so brilliant and shiny and perfect and awesome. Most importantly though, it’s inspiring. The world could learn so much from a show like this.

173. "Crossing my fingers"
Exclusive: Friday Night Lights Looking Good

How's this for some happy TGIF news? Sources over at NBC tell me that the Peacock net is moving forward on a second season of Friday Night Lights.

Although there is no official pickup yet, insiders tell me the network is locking down the cast for the new season and making travel arrangments for upcoming press events. As you know, a couple of weeks ago, the network also ordered six scripts for the coming season. All this is a very good sign.

Still, the official announcement of the show's fate won't be made until May 14, when NBC reveals its new fall schedule to advertisers in New York.

Meanwhile, Studio 60 finally got a return date today. NBC announced the show will return to close out the remainder of its first season—the six episodes we haven't yet seen—on May 24. No word yet on a second season.

175. "Renewed for 2nd season!!!!"
NBC Renews 'Friday Night Lights'

NBC has ended weeks of speculation by granting a second season to Friday Night Lights, the critically acclaimed freshman drama that lagged in the ratings. The show's first season only averaged a 2.3 rating/6 share and 6.1 million viewers overall, but NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly has championed the show as part the network's ''first be best, then be first'' manta. Friday's renewal follows NBC's recent decision to re-up another highly-praised but low-rated show, the Tina Fey/Alec Baldwin comedy 30 Rock. The official announcement on Friday Night Lights will come during NBC's upfront presentation on Monday. The network is expected to order a full 22-episode second season, which may air later than the 8 p.m. slot it had this season. Friday Night Lights is executive produced by Peter Berg, who wrote and directed the movie on which the show was based, as well as Jason Katims, Brian Grazer, David Nevins, and Sarah Aubrey. Kyle Chandler stars as coach Eric Taylor in the show about a small Texas town where high school football is king. (Variety)

Reruns start May 27
Season 1 DVD due in late summer

By William Keck, USA TODAY
BEVERLY HILLS — Now that it appears NBC is going to give the struggling Friday Night Lights a second chance, its tight-knit cast can shift from trying to save the show to getting people to watch it.

Before an event at the Museum of Television & Radio this spring, star Kyle Chandler, 41, and many of his cast members were confident they'd return for a second year — which is not to say each didn't find ways to support the show.

Scott Porter, who plays paraplegic quarterback Jason Street, posted Lights videos and behind-the-scenes clips on his MySpace page. Porter, 27, now encourages people to watch episodes at nbc.com or itunes, tune into summer reruns (starting May 27) or check out the Season 1 DVD (due in late summer). "Anyone who didn't watch because they were scared they couldn't catch up, there are now so many ways."

Minka Kelly, whose character, Lyla, is at the center of a love triangle, is proud of Season 1. "But we have so much more to do."

Peter Berg, who created the 2004 film on which the series was based and serves as an executive producer, wants a new time slot for the show, which NBC tried at different times. "It really comes down to that," Berg says. "After Heroes (on Mondays) would be good. Or Sundays at 9 p.m." He'll find out today, when the network announces its fall schedule.

Executive producer Jason Katims says he wrote the season finale with a second year in mind. The team won the state championship, and Coach Taylor (Chandler) accepted a new coaching gig at Texas Methodist University.

The fall story line will advance several months to late summer, with Coach Taylor coaching at that university, while his wife, Tami, and their daughter, Julie, remain in their small town. Tami (Connie Britton), who learned she was pregnant at season's end, will be close to giving birth.

Britton, 39, is looking forward to having the baby next season and likely (says Katims) tackling the topic of postpartum depression.

As for other possible stories, the cast is intrigued by Julie's sex life. Says Zach Gilford, 25, who plays boyfriend Matt: "I think she should lose her virginity to someone else." Aimee Teegarden, who plays the teen, shyly asks, "Why does Julie have to lose her virginity at all?"

Chandler, sounding like Teegarden's real-life dad, wants nothing to do with the topic. "I don't want to even think about my daughter losing her virginity," says Chandler, teasing Gilford: "But if it's not to Matt, that's a benefit."

As good as these writers are, I would love to see what they would do with this type of storyline, however, I don't really want that to happen. Matt is her special man.

181. "Fall time slot"
Per TV.com, Friday Night Lights returns in the fall on (appropriately) Friday nights from 10-11.

http://www.tv.com/friday-night-lights/show/58137/story/9527.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=headlinessh&tag=headlines

While that's not a prime time slot, the ratings pressure should be much lower.

Anybody got any pull about having our own FNL category? The length of this thread proves that there will be an ongoing interest in this show!

The time slot has changed again. It's still on Friday night but at 9/8 Central. I don't think this is a good time slot at all but we'll see what happens.

http://www.nbc.com/Fall_Preview/

I think it would do better on Mondays before or after Heroes or kill ER (it's been dying for the last couple of years - put it out of its misery for crying out loud) and replace it with Friday Night Lights.
