4. "RE: Jericho!" |
I'm probably going to watch it, but I'm getting leery of these new types of shows that seemed to be more "made for TV" movies, then a show that can sustain a long term airing.I really got hooked into Surface and Invasion last season and right from the beginning I felt that these shows were more suited to the movie genre than an on going TV drama and I was right. I mean, the concepts of these shows are interesting, but can they last for more than a season? So far the only show that has been able to do that is LOST, but even that's been getting a little out there here and there. If this new show is based solely on a disaster without some strange mystery going on, then it's really a 2 hour movie. I'm hoping though for more LOST type show's and I think this one could have possibilities. I'm just kind of tired of getting hooked into these types of shows only to have them cancelled without closure.

this show was a piece of sh!t.i watched it b/c DH saw a commercial about an hour earlier, and got interested in it. we don't watch any of the other crap it was in competition with, so we watched. it blew. and not in a good way, either. it was so cheesy and the acting so terrible. i doubt we'll watch it again. DH described it as "painful." besides, i'm sick of these bandwagon terrorist shows. ~ cqc

15. "RE: ugh" |
LAST EDITED ON 09-21-06 AT 06:05 PM (EST)I agree, there's zero sign that the show has anything to do with terrorism. The show seems to be about "the end of the world" -- ie., World War III -- more than anything. A terrorism plot that involves nuclear bombs going off in several distant American cities and how it effects a remote small town wouldn't even be much of a plot for an ongoing TV series, for this show to work, I think it has to be more about how a small, isolated group of people gather together and survive without contact with the outside world and no one but themselves to depend on. My guess is that the show is basically going to be "Lost in Kansas" -- the bombs are just a means of setting up the storyline, they *AREN'T* the storyline, just a subplot. My guess is that the show is going to basically be an exploration of an American community that, after being part of the the global economy that we've all part of, suddenly has to become completely self-reliant. When your power is being transmitted from a power plat that's hundreds of miles away, what do you do for electricity? What happens when there are suddenly no more tractor trailers trucking food, medicine, etc. into your local stores every night? Do the have's share with the have not's? Does the town descend into anarchy? It's basically a story about how a town reacts to an apocalyptic situation, not about terrorism. Heck, by the end of Episode 2 it looks like, due to radiation fallout, it might not even be safe for them to spend any length of time outdoors. I don't think it was a coincidence that the first episode happened to make a passing mention of a mining operation of some kind. How do you try finding help or finding out what happened when you can't even safely travel outdoors? What do you do for food when all the animals die and the soil becomes contaminated? I enjoyed it and will probably be back for the rest of its run, but I also liked Surface and Invasion (although I didn't like last year's "freak of the week" Threshold show as much.) A few years ago, Showtime aired two seasons of a similarly biblically titled show called "Jeremiah." It was written and produced by J. Michael Straczynski, the guy behind Babylon 5, and despite starring the at first glance cheesy team of Luke Perry and Malcolm-Jamal Warner was incredibly good. It had a apocalyptic theme similar to what Jericho seems to be developing, but it epxlored what the world would look like 20 years AFTER a apocalyptic event (in its case, the event was a virus that killed everyone who had reached puberty, leaving behind a country -- or world, the question was never really answered -- populated by the now adult children who'd managed to survive on their own.) Unfortunately being Showtime, the fools cancelled it after two seasons.

LAST EDITED ON 09-22-06 AT 01:53 PM (EST)>Can anyone say: "The Stand"? If >you are correct. Well, its been a long time since I read "The Stand," but wasn't that more of a horror/occult story? "Jericho" seems to be aiming toward being more of a straight disaster movie -- I'd say it's shaping up to have more in common with a movie like "Independence Day" than something like "The Stand" (which I believe was first published in 1978.) "Jeremiah" was actually based on a European comic book that was first published in the late '70s. Of course, "The Day After" was broadcast in 1983. "Mad Max" was in 1979. "Red Dawn" was in 1984. As far as other books go, "Alas, Babylon," which was published in the late 50's and pre-dates all of the above, was about the effects that a nuclear war had on a small Florida town (and in the 50's Florida was much more rural than it is today) -- that's probably the closest that you're going to find to the direction that "Jericho" seems to be be heading towards.

LAST EDITED ON 09-21-06 AT 06:07 PM (EST)For those interested, Jericho's premiere did pretty good and -- given that it went up against the premieres of The Biggest Loser 3 and Top Model 7, Dancing with the Stars 3's second results show -- much better than I expected. The show did 11.66 million viewers, a 7.6/12 in households, 3.4/10 in Adults 18-49, and 4.5/12 in Adults 25-54 -- numbers that placed it second in its time period (behind Dancing with the Stars) in all those categories. From the press release CBS put out this afternoon: This is the best regularly scheduled delivery in the time period since February 18, 2004 in households ("60 Minutes Wednesday"), January 7, 2004 in viewers ("60 Minutes Wednesday"), February 26, 2003 in adults 25-54 ("Star Search") and March 12, 2003 in adults 18-49 ("Star Search"). Compared to the same night last year (the season premieres of "Still Standing" and "Yes Dear"), JERICHO was up +65% in households (from 4.6/07), +67% in adults 25-54 (from 2.7/07), +48% in adults 18-49 (from 2.3/07), +28% in adults 18-34 (2.3/08 from 1.8/06) and added +4.86m viewers (from 6.80m, +71%).

More bad acting and implausible plot lines. I finally figured out what is wrong with this show (besides these two points).1. It is moving too slow, just like Invasion. It has to speed up to have any chance of surviving. 2. It has too many characters. For example, the angst-filled geek pining for the hot, snobby girl. What's the point? I can't see any development of these characters. 3. The Hawkins character. He is supposed to be mysterious, but he just irritates me. I can't see any possible way that whatever secret he is hiding will interest me. 4. Lack of character empathy. I don't like any of these characters. Zero. Zippo. I have no emotional attachment. They could all die, and I would be okay with that. Sigs by Bob about chalk dust. Pretty exciting stuff

I'm still watching -- I'm haven't been a big fan of the execution, but I'm still a sucker for the show's concept. So exactly what did we learn last night: - the nukes weren't deilivered by missiles and were instead somehow smuggled into (or stolen from within) the United States and driven to their targets? - that a nuke went off in Washington - the a nuke went off in Lawrence, Kansas but not Topeka - that the NYPD managed to discover the NYC bomb before it detonated - that Mysterious Government Man had A) been separated (divorced?) from his wife and not been around, B) moved them from DC to Jericho and paid cash for his new Jericho house (which conveniently apparently already had a fortified basement room) two days before the bombs went off - that FEMA is "on the job" So if the bombs were smuggled in and set off within the US by what one would presume to be suicide bombers, where were the counter-attack missiles that were previously launched from underground Kansas silos going? Were the suicide bombers agents of some foreign government and the missiles bound for some of that country's militay installations, cities, etc. or were multiple nuclear missiles (in an apparent example of wayyy overkill) launched at a terrorist camp of some kind?

Eh, it's entertaining enough. Sure it requires suspension of disbelief, but in a time when 24 (the show that set the disbelief suspension bar) can win the Emmy for Best Drama, what's the big deal? And, nobody's going to mistake it for Masterpiece Theatre anytime soon, but I'm willing to overlook hammy acting and questionable dialogue for an hour of escapism a week. Maybe I'm just shallow. Oh, well.

I'll still admit to watching and really liking this show. I have to say though that the biggest problem I have with Jericho is the pacing. We have been on for weeks now and have not moved one single plot line toward resolution. They've done a great job of raising questions, but we are closer to answers on none of them, such as:1) What did Jake do for five years? 2) Who attacked us and what IS the damage? 3) Are snobby girls parents/Roger still alive? 4) Will anyone ever tell Eric his (ex)wife is pregnant? 5) What is the deal with Hawkins?!? We really need to start moving some of these major issues forward just a little bit. Seriously! Still, I love the show but it started the season as one of my favorites and is definitely starting to fall back in the pack. "In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for Divine protection. Our prayers, Sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered… do we imagine we no longer need His assistance?" Ben Franklin, Constitutional Convention 1787

Hi PRE.RE: #1 - What did Jake do for five years? I think he was a Green Beret or something. He is too clever by half when when saving the town from disaster - again. RE: #5 - What is the deal with Hawkins? He certainly did recognize the Super Hero methods used by Jake. And what did it mean when "We've been betrayed" appeared on his computer screen? There was something about moving or not being able to meet up with others as well. Question - How the heck did Hawkins' computer survive that microwave blast? Because it was in his super fortified secret cellar? Oh.the.drama. And yes, I confess to willingly watching this show. Enquiring minds want to know who did what, why, when, and how. Great drama it isn't, but the premise intrigues me. So sue me. HA! Everyone is entitled to my opinion.

Not only is it back, that was the best episode in quite awhile. I really like this show and the idea behind it, but I never felt like it was going anywhere or actually answering any of the plethora of questions that it posed. Last weeks episode really did answer a lot of those outstanding questions and put us in a place where the plot can finally start moving forward. Now we know:* Is Hawkins a bad guy? Yep, he sure was - may be changing stripes. But we still have the great tension of finding out if he works for the government, a fifth column group or someone else altogether. * What was Jake doing? Now we know he worked for Ravenwood and was running contraband, but has always been basically one of the good guys. Sure there is a lot to be resolved and it looks like there are really interesting new plotlines coming up (which president?....Postman, anyone?). I really like this show and the biggest missing factor has been any plot resolution. It seems that worm has finally turned but hopefully its not too lae to save the ratings on this show. "Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of Patriotism, who should labour to subvert these great Pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of Men and citizens. The mere Politician, equally with the pious man ought to respect and to cherish them." - President Washington's farewell address.

I liked last night episode a lot. Now we know the who and most of the how, but we still are lacking the WHY. We also found out, well with a 95% probability, that Hawkins is a good guy. We need to introduce a new sbu-plot though and I think that war with the neighboring town should be an interesting one. I do worry about when this show moves from a drama to a civics lesson, but I think that you are right. It is likely to get cancelled before it gets that far.More twists, more conflict and this concept really could have gotten some legs. But we spent too much time with mundane carp and it may be too late to save the show at this point. "It cannot be emphasized too clearly and too often that this nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.” Patrick Henry

Oh sure, just go ahead and blame the bedazzler! I am incapable of such savagery. What's next? An indictment against the crock pot?

You guys are right... Jericho is cancelled. Now we'll never know how those lvoe relationships formed during the show turned out. Did we ever find out why Dale was so scorned by his schoolmates? Why did China drop those food bundles? Was the food contaminated with wheat gluten?... or is that just a regular thing nowadays? Is the United States divided into many countries now? For all the fans of this show... Fooner, Bystander, PRE, Hobbs, Zombie, Augie, MRC, Rudy... and many more... (fooner being the biggest fan) I hope for all our sakes, that petition makes a difference.

There is still a chance of saving this show. Yesterday rumors were rampant that CBS was considering just that. People have sent 30,000 pounds of nuts to CBS (inside joke if you weren't watching the show) and there are 95,000 signatures on the petition to get this show back on. This week is crucial. If you care about this show, or about the networks taking viewers for granted by torpedoing their favorite shows, please sign the petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/09272006/petition.html. Better yet, call CBS or e-mail them:Kelly Kahl, Sr. Executive VP of Programming 323-575-2442, kkahl@cbs.com Nina Tassler, President, CBS Entertainment 323-575-2747, ntassler@cbs.com
Great information at www.nutsonline.com/jericho or the CBS Save Jericho message boards. I know that there's a similar post in OT, but not everyone goes there.
