Silas' parable about the birds was about whether a man just talks about robbing and running or actually robs and runs. he says hes not like the bird just thinking about flying -- which is why the answer to the riddle is that three are still on the wire -- but that he (unlike the bird who just thought about it) is going to fly the coop. Also, keep in mind Mr. Smooth threatened him if he didn't take care of Jim "without being incendiary" (a term for fire). Then, in his car, Mr. Smooth overhears Silas saying he's got the money in his safe and is going to run. (He's talking to Mary. However, Caleb steals the money and rehides it, which is why she has to fake sleeping with Caleb in ep. 2 to get the information from him as to where he moved the money.) Then, snake man -- who was at the table with Mary earlier when Jim came in to Slo-Mans -- kills Silas. (Snake Man is not Job, who had tattoos on his neck, which Snake Man did not when killing Silas.
Finally, when Jim joins the Sheriff Boyd and Deputy Dawn at the site and the three goons show up with fake NGC IDs, they claim Silas committed suicide, even though they knew Jim witnessed it. Ultimately, no one challenged THAT he was dead, just HOW he died. The whole question of obits on the web site does not change the fact that a TV show never shows every incident in a story line -- things which are assumed to occur (the so-called willing suspension of disbelief in order to believe a whole storyline actually occurred).
For that matter, if we believe that Jim didn't check Silas' body before getting in his car, then we can't believe Jim ever got in his car, since the edit only shows him coming down the driveway. And we never see the house actually burn, etc. Get the point.
In the end, why would three goons show up and talk about suicide unless they wanted to push a con about the method of death, rather than say he torched his house and ran?
Is he alive? Maybe, but it seems ridiculously unlikely.
In any case, this is a site about the game, not the plot and everu nuance of the story.

The Black Box
Have nothing to do with whether Silas is dead.
