"Topic Icon Colors, Flames, and Locks"
I understand what the lock on a topic icon indicates, but what is the significance of the color of the icon (blue versus yellow), and what does it mean when the icon is in flames? It looks like the icon goes from blue to yellow (after it has flamed out?), but what is the event, if any, that triggers this to happen?

1. "RE: Topic Icon Colors, Flames, and Locks"
Yellow icons mean that there is a new message in that thread since the last time you visited the site.

The forum software does its best to keep track of the last time you visited so that it can update the yellow/blue icons for you as appropriate, but if you use the "mark as read" button at the top of each forum, you can change each icon in that forum from yellow to blue immediately... this is handy, so that you don't have to try to keep track of what you've read, and what you haven't... also, since you can do it on a forum-by-forum basis, if a new post appears in one forum while you're reading another, it's easy to go find it (cause it will be hilighted in yellow).

From the lobby, you can mark all of the forum as read, if you choose... Notice that the folders on the lobby also change from yellow to blue and back to indicate the presence of new messages... personally, I'd recommend only using "mark as read" in each individual forum, because its a daunting task to read the entire message board at once.

As i said, if you choose not to use mark as read, the forum software will try to change the blue and yellow icons for you, but it's not nearly as reliable.

As for the flames... any time a topic gets more than 20 replies, the flames appear to mean that it's a hot topic... it means nothing in terms of performance of the individual thread... it's just there so that people notice that this topic, for whatever reason, is generating a lot of discussion.

Locks can only be added and removed by moderators... once a lock is in place, no messages in that thread can be edited or modified by any user other than a moderator.

Please note that a locked forum is NOT the same as a locked thread... you may post to a locked forum, but your post will not appear until a moderator has decided whether it is appropriate to display... We have several inactive forums that currently have locks on them, but if there's something you desperately wish to add to one of them, you can, and a moderator will decide whether or not to "release" your message into the forum.

Blue means there are no new messages on this thread since the last time you were here (on the boards), yellow means there are. Threads start flaming when they reach 20 posts, and the "view all" selection is added at 21 posts.

edited because sleeeve got his post up between the time opened this to read and finished my post. adding:

By the way, there used to be a function where posts could be rated, which was particularly helpful on spoilers at times, but was abused in other forums. As sleeeve points out, the popularity of a thread can now be determined only by the number of posts it generates.

3. "Flames"
I understand the flaming files preceeding a thread. But I don't understand what the difference is when posters refer to "being flamed". Are both references to the same thing?

Flaming Flamingo
I like the sound of that one!
Wonder what it would look like?

Sorry... When you responded to this thread, I assumed that you had found the answer.... but the site that Webby linked has been removed.

The best definition of "flame" that I could find is:
a rude or derogatory, often passionate, message aimed at someone else.

In other words... it's yelling at someone in writing.

7. "RE: Until Sleeeve Saved the Day!!"
You, Red Lady, with your silly-ass question... this has put you at the absolute pit of the earth and why don't you stop wasting our time with all these inane questions?!?! You're a troll for posting this question.

kidding kidding kidding... but that's what a flame looks like when it's being directed at someone for posting something (especially on the Spoilers board) that is a total waste of time when the same thing has been posted several times already -- or when someone is trying to make trouble by claiming to know someone who was on the show and we shoot them down with 'flames', so to speak.

Keep in mind that there is a Zero Tolerance Policy here, so any flames directed at mindless idiots cannot be made personal or the person doing the flaming would risk getting banned.

So... no, Red Lady, it is NOT a lame question -- you'd be surprised at how many clueless people we get each new Survivor season who post mindless crap without regard to what has already been posted out there or think it's a giggle to post a hoax. Unfortunately, many of these people wouldn't know they were getting flamed if you actually lit a bonfire under them.

.......
