~An Exercise in Futility~A carrot dangles out in front of me,
I try with all of my might to reach it,
But the person that holds the pole keeps pulling it teasingly,
Tauntingly, taking it away when I am very close to obtaining it.
The carrot skips out over the green grass and lands softly,
I can smell its mild fragrance,
I can almost taste the sweet flesh,
Another tug and it moves along,
Frustrated I stumble and my mouth is filled with dirt instead.
The bitter soil does not daunt me,
But like Charlie Brown who never could kick the ball,
I flail with utter abandon and miss it again.
The closer I get, the further it goes,
Until one day it is out of sight.
I resign myself to life without that carrot.
It probably didn’t taste all that good anyway.
