My Uncle Albert was always the out-of-the-box thinker in our family. He was an itinerant middle school art teacher for many years and really did things his own way.Back in the late 1950s he was in the US Army, stationed in France. This was Nirvana for my uncle, who fancied himself the ultimate French-souled gran artiste, despite his Jewish-Scottish ancestry. One day, while out painting a landscape (he never did explain how he had so much free time from his army duties), he happened across a young native. Immediately smitten, he was determined to make an impression. So, summoning up his best French, he told her, “Mademoiselle, vous ętes la plus belle du monde!” (Miss, you are the most beautiful woman in the world!) Well, that’s what he thought he said… What he really said was “Mademoiselle, vous ętes poubelle du monde!” (Miss, you are the ashcan of the world!). But love did conquer all, and they were soon married – a union that lasted until my Aunt Paulette passed away earlier this year in her beloved homeland.
