"WSC (PY): A Valentines Day Love Story" |
This poem will need a little prefacing. You see, today is the two year anniversary of my parents' death. My mom had cancer for three years and my dad was ill for about a year -- both in and out of the hospital. Much pain, suffering, and sadly, separation while they were ill. I was set to go home and take care of them -- my dad was in the ER, sedated and contracting every ER infection possible (Staph, pneumonia, etc) and my mom was at home with my brother. Four hours before I was supposed to get on the plane, my brother called. He told me they both had died -- my mom at 1:35 a.m. and my dad at 2:00 a.m. Neither had known how bad off the other was (we didn't think we should make the situation worse by telling them). Anyway, it was the day before Valentines, and they got to spend it together. There is much, much more to this story, but I think I'll stop there and share the poem I wrote for them. When the first pale pink buds bloomed on your favorite tree and Valentine's day neared you took one last look in the mirror at the face they carved up to save you and fell into your son's arms.
Then you did something that inspired everyone who would later hear the tale. You went to you valentine: guant as an Aushwitz survivor laid out, dressed only in his plastic tubes and a course white wash cloth to cover his groin "Come with me, My Love" you coaxed and your Knight, your Heathcliffe, one foot in each world saw the beauty and perfection of his wife restored Then, as always, he followed you Not to the ends of the earth, but to the end of time.

Oh, Scribey, sweetheart....I can't imagine how difficult this was for you to experience and to share with us. But I'm so glad you did - it was just heartbreaking and beautiful all at the same time. I'm also sitting here wiping away the tears, but that's the sign of a wonderful piece of writing from the heart! I hope that you find some comfort in what I'm about to say, and that it's not taken wrong, but the fact that they weren't without each other for very long on that day.... I'd almost think that they were truly destined to be each other's soul mates for that to have happened. (((HUGS!!!!!))) Love you, Scribey. **************************************** Visit BlossomArt's Ebay Page!

My sweet Scribe has this pinned up on her desk, and every time I sit at her computer, I reread the poem. Every time I reread this, I cry all over again, but today it was especially amazing to see again. Scribe, my love, this is one of the best pieces you've ever written, and I hope one day you will write more about your folks' passing. I feel very lucky to have been there with you when this happened, to have witnessed their connection and love that kept them together wherever the other was/is. You've captured such an amazing, beautiful, sad, tragic, and utterly awe-inspiring moment in such a poignant form. I'm so glad you shared this with everyone here.
For your parents.
We love men. We just don't want to see them naked.~ Two Nice Girls

Nightscribe, As you know, I was privileged to hear the story before now, so I had already absorbed the painful and mystical happenings, so I was able to read the poem straight through...This poem stuns me with the way YOU carved these three perfect stanzas out of a block of so many possible details and memories. The Wuthering Heights allusion put a lump in my throat... I honestly teared up. I am not one who gets emotional when I read most poetry. It really has to hit me deep. You did that.

Scribe,This piece was specifically called to my attention, and I must express how moving and admirable I find it to be. Dave's line from Hemmingway "Write hard and clear about what hurts" has never been so appropriate as for this piece. You are amazing. dangerkitty

I just wanted to thank you all for the warm reception. Poetry is very difficult for me, and so is this subject, so the two of them together -- whoa! Here's what I didn't get around to telling you all in my preface. The week following their passing, my brother and I were preparing the memorial service, and he turns to me and asks, "Do you remember when we were kids how mom and dad used to say they were going to go together?" And then it hit me. Yes! When I was a kid, my mom would say to me "when your dad goes, I go." He would then say "When your mom goes, I go." They didn't say how or why, and I didn't ask, because it just made sense to my child's mind that there could be no dad without mom and no mom without dad. But they knew they would not, could not survive without the other. And they knew it 20 years before it happened. Again, thank you for the support. You're all very special people.

LAST EDITED ON 02-16-04 AT 06:45 AM (EST)Just wanted to bump this as it's now two years later and this is still a great and moving story to read. It's amazing how in tune your parents were to each other to go so close and it shows the love they had for each other. Thanks for sharing, Scribe! I don't know how I missed this the first go around (I was sporadically in and out on the WSC boards at that time). Edited to add: And of course, I must also get post #13! It's my lucky number...
