"WSC3 (FF) Late Fees" |
~~~Late Fees~~~Sandy rushed to the video counter at the local grocery store. Five minutes to twelve, she just made it. “You’re at the wrong store.” Hmm? She wasn’t quite listening as she jammed the tapes into the slot. “Those are from Blockbuster, ma’am.” The video clerk approached the counter and pulled the tapes from the bin and handed them back to her. She looked at them dubiously. They both bore the bright blue and gold Blockbuster logo. “Stupid,” she thought to herself. “Uh, thanks,” she managed. She put her dark sunglasses on and walked out of the store. Hot tears spilled down her cheeks. She was doing it again. Sandy did manage to remember where she parked her car, this time, and she headed for home. It was starting. She’d suspected for months now, but it was much worse lately. Last week she found the butter in the drawer and the phone book in the refrigerator. Tuesday she almost hit her neighbor’s mailbox when she though her car was in drive, it was actually in reverse. And names, she couldn’t remember names. Not just people’s names, but names of things. Sometimes the words just wouldn’t come out. Just as surprisingly, old memories seemed to float to the surface. At night her mind would race with recollections of her first grade teacher and the old cat her grandmother had. It was a good thing Sandy was a nurse, because she knew just what to do. Her grandmother died at age 82. Senility they called it then. Cause of death- advanced old age. Her father passed away at 71. They had a fancier term for it by then, Alzheimer’s disease. She was now 56 and it was already starting in her. But she knew what to do. She had no husband, no children, so it ended with her. She came home to her small house and headed to the medicine cabinet. She was a nurse, a trained medical professional, she had caught it early. Phenobarbital, 20mg. She got in bed and covered herself with the blanket. She would sleep, but not wake up. It ended with her. Too bad the videos would be late.
