This is kind of a mix between free verse and rhyming, but I think it is loosly enough structered to be posted in the free verse category. I have set music to this piece, and recorded it on a live CD, but I wasn't satisfied with my musical composition so I rarely play this song. I do love to quote this to people as an example of my work though. The Cat who would be King A deafening roar
A Banshee scream
Escapes timid lips
Startling the Cat who would be King Displaced wig
and tattered robes
With half mad orbs
Appearance of the Cat who would be King Transient and vagabond
No true abode
Wandering and lost
Destiny of the Cat who would be King Destiny revealed
To kill or be killed
To rule it all. or lie still
Choice for the Cat who would be King Cauldrens of choice
But no choice at all
The wheel keeps on spinning
From the edge he will fall
“Don’t you see?” says the wise man
With a shout and a call
“Just stand in the center and balance won’t stall”
“But to reach here” says he
“A dozen must die, but remain where you’re standing
You’ll forfeit your life.”
Time at last for the Cat who would be King
To sacrifice self and to trust the Supreme.
