"S48 - Impressions of the Characters"
First, I will start with some notes:

1 - In a new editing choice we saw the confirmation calls that were shown for all the players. Of this I will only note that David was the only player shown more than once and he actually had 3 snippets while Joe had the longest sequence at the very end of the montage.

2 – During the intro, we see Bianca and Thomas in a challenge throwing a purple ball.  That scene wasn’t in episode 1 so, if Lagi loses, those 2 are safe until we see that challenge.

3 - I remember when James had to chop all the trees around camp to get wood for the shelter,  Nowadays, the bamboo are simply strewn around and the castaways just need to bring them together.

4 - I noticed that the animal symbols on Lagi were all black and they also had letters while Vula only had the animals but they each had a different color. I suspect each cylinder has its own cipher. For this reason, I feel that there will be a tribe swap, because the differences would prevent someone from having an easy time to collect the other camp’s idol.

Lagi (Purple) will go up first because I feel they are the power tribe and the editors made them look even stronger than they actually were: When they won the Reward challenge, it looked more like a runaway than it actually was.  Jeff never mentioned that Vula had retrieved their key and had made it back but we did see that their platform was empty just before Shauhin made the winning throw.

Joe had the first confessional of the season which was practically a segue from his call to be on the show. Joe made fire for Lagi and told us he wanted to make strong bonds in the team. He would soon tell Eva that she was his «Ride or Die» .  Later confessionals told us that both had every intention of keeping that bond.  Joe's tone was determined when he said that he had decided that he was with Eva. « I got her» he said.  he wasn’t going to let her down.

Eva had the third confessional about how she’s in a male dominated world.  Eva used her confessional about gathering bamboo to tell us about her autism and how it affects her. She soon added that she was impressed positively by Joe so much so that she told him she wanted him to be her #1. She also told him about her autism and that led to a very touching moment between the two.

Thomas While Eva introduced herself to the tribe, Thomas gave us his impressions of the tribe, hoping he wouldn’t be considered the weakest link. Thomas named the Lagi all-men alliance the «California Girls ».  He wanted Bianca to be their 4th.

Shauhin looked at his competition as soon as he got to the beach. Arriving at the Lagi beach, Shauhin talked about their win. Shauhin said that Star broke Survivor 101.  He would then tell us that he likes being in the «California-Girls» alliance.

Bianca mentioned in confessional that she clicked with Thomas

Star was the idol-seeker in Lagi and people noticed.  It didn’t work out for her. Star pointed out that Tagi was a hard working tribe and we soon saw that Eva was like a machine when it came to gathering wood (Butch Lockley would have been so happy!) Star called her a beast!

In the Immunity Challenge, Bianca & Thomas started a little behind Civa but caught the early momentum and never looked back.

Civa (Orange) I think Civa will do well this season, maybe not as strong as Lagi but they should have a good number of players at the merger.

David was quick to talk about his threat level Laughing, David talked about his job and how he could be either the hero or the villain. David and Mitch were the first to mention the symbols that serve as clues to the idol. David showed that he thinks highly of himself.   David asked questions to his tribe to get them to reveal their personalities.  He talked about his love for romantic movies.

Kamilla told us she was happy to be on the show. Kyle and Kamilla bonded over their shared love of certain movies and the fact that they are both from Guyana.  She was surprised that Charity would throw Kyle under the bus. In response, Kamilla threw Charity under the bus when she talked to Kyle, Chrissy and David.  An alliance was formed.

Kyle, after coming back from the challenge, he connected with Kamilla, realizing that her strategic skills could help him.

Chrissy talked about being a fan since Season 1 Despite the loss, Chrissy still liked their chances

Charity introduced herself in her first confessional.  She talked about her work as a flight attendant (That worked well for Todd but will it be good luck this time?)  Later, Charity told us she’d be more secretive than David about the idol clues.  When Charity revealed that she likes her steaks medium-well done, she was accused of being a psychopath by Kyle

Mitch was the first to present himself to Jeff and the group (we had a nice throwback to Chrissy of Survivor Amazon) Mitch participated in the search for the symbols but he would have preferred working on the shelter. Mitch spoke for the tribe, saying they were disappointed with the loss

In the Immunity Challenge, Charity & Kamilla slowed down, letting Lagi overtake them and finish first.  At least they contained Vula’s comeback.

Vula (Green) They could be in deep trouble

Kevin mentioned he had been impressed by Yul but how the season of David vs Goliath was the deciding factor to try for the show Note Kevin hurt his shoulder right off the bat but he went on the challenge to win the supplies.  He gave us his thoughts on the situation. During his challenge vs Kyle, we saw that Kevin was calm and calculating while Kyle was impulsive and made mistakes (will Kevin shoulder injury be as useful as Tyson’s on his 3rd try?) At least Kyle used his misfortune to start a friendship with Kevin. Not only did Kevin receive positive comments from Mary, he would learn that Sai wants him in her core 4.

Sai came right after Joe. It was a way to introduce us to the key player of the evening.  Noting that Stephanie and Mary weren’t into strategy talks, Sai said she needed to establish her core four.  Sai’s confessional resumed to tell us this was her season.   Stephanie talked about Sai’s desire to play the game.  It didn’t take much time to see who had the better strategy. Was that an omen?   She got her core 4 to start looking for the idol.  She would soon spot the «Beware Advantage but couldn’t figure out the locked cylinder’s puzzle. Sai was determined to decipher the cylinder’s clue so she presented it to Cedrek.  She had hoped to keep it secret but the cryptogram was her weakness.  Despite this, Sai was the one who figured that the colored images of animals corresponded to the colors of the numbers. Hearing about Sai’s find got Cedrek to confess that it secured her spot in the four. Cedrek was the one to unscramble the letters to form the word « LISTEN ». Kevin had an different reaction:  He was happy to know about the idol but scared that Sai had been the one to find it.

Justin was the one who talked about Sai’s proposition of a core four.

Mary  was the firemaker for Vula but, as she said, people don’t give a f*ck about that anymore.  Her budding connection to Kevin will be more important.

Cedrek first told us he was ready to play. In his second confessional, he once again was very analytical about his team, saying they were the underdog team.

In the immunity loss, Stephanie & Kevin started with a big deficit. They made up some time but fell short.  Stephanie did have the Kiss-of-Death

The tribe’s scrambling before the Council pitted Stephenie against Sai.  There was a division in the tribe with Kevin and Justin sitting right in the middle of it all.  They decided to go with Sai & Cedrek but that could be a momentary grouping.  I feel Kevin’s connection with Mary too important to abandon it.  After all, in the next TC, Kevin, Justin & Mary could be the new majority, especially with Sai feeling secure.

Early Predictions: Overall, I feel that the characters that stood out in this episode were Joe, Eva, David, Kamilla and Kevin and, of course Sai but her status is still up in the air.

Because of Sai's uncertain position and considering tribe strengths and alliances, I would place the 5 players above in the merged tribe and add Thomas, Shauhin, Bianca, Chrissy, Kyle, Justin and one of Sai and Mary depending on which way Kevin and Justin turn.

Star, Mitch, Charity, Cedrek and the loser of the Sai & Mary split would be gone before the merger which I anticipate to be at 12.  Of course, a tribal realignment could change all that.

1. "RE: S48 - Impressions of the Characters"
Oh I love when you get the editing thread going, michel! Thanks for this.

I got most of the same impressions as you did. Sai was the game villain, from my perspective and it was easy to see her pitted against poor Stephanie from the git go. The editors chose to contrast their styles. Stephanie preferring to get to know her tribunates socially first, while Sai couldn't be bothered with the social graces so jumped right in. Clearly she won the first round, but we all know this is a social game so I expect she will fall short long before the end.

I also think that the interesting folks from the other tribes included David and Kamilla and less so Kyle from the Orange tribe. Kyle not only made in roads with Kamilla but also with Kevin, who I suspect he will meet again come merge and perhaps they could get far?

Purple folks that stood out to me were Joe and Eva, and then Thomas and Bianca. And Shauhin was interesting too. Star definitely seems like the one on the outs in this tribe but let's face it, they are a physical force to deal with.

Fun first start and yes, there are some big personalities in this bunch. I'm with you as for the next episode. I would n't be surprised to see Green Vula choke again, and if that happens, my money is on Cedrak leaving prior to Mary! Great work, michel!

4. "S48 : E2 - Sabotage"
Let’s start in Vula where we witnessed a seismic shift in the alliances:  Where Justin seemed in connivence with Kevin, we saw that Justin could switch his plans very rapidly. I had noticed that the recap of Episode 1 hadn’t shown their bond and now we know why.   He instigated the blindside of his former partner but where does that leave him?   Mary will be less likely to trust him than at the start of the episode, Cedrek and Sai are even tighter than before and the tribe is even more pathetic than earlier.

If Justin instigated the vote, it was Cedrek’s adamant defense of Sai that was the igniter. Now down to four, this duo will be tough to crack but maybe Cedrek will come to his senses and realize that not only Justin could serve as a shield, the racial bond between him and Sai would be an easy target in a joint tribe.

Sai played her idol, her only real power in the game, and it was a waste since Mary didn’t have a vote and there were 3 votes on Kevin.  Better safe than sorry, sure but she has to hope the new idol won’t fall in the hands of Mary after her honesty confession during Tribal Council.  In this game, honesty is, at best naivety, at worst, a sickness that lets everyone read your cards.
Mary is now 2 for 2 in Council misreads.  This game is hard but it’s even harder when you don’t receive any meaningful intelligence from the group.  She’s trapped in quicksand and it will soon engulf her.

Next, Civa gave us some interesting revelations: David started the episode telling us that Civa was like a family and Charity told us that they would stick like glue but it would soon change.

It was David who spotted Mitch and Charity talking on the beach and told the group that he was worried about the pair.  He didn’t want anyone outside his 4 to have an edge.

At the challenge we saw that Jeff isn’t the complete moron he was when the show began when he was very tactful with Mitch.  We also saw that Mitch is great at hoops (as long as he can throw underhand which doesn’t quite work in the NBA!) He also gained the Block-a-Vote advantage but he foolishly told his whole tribe.  Of course, that means he plans on using it after a tribal realignment but he may very well need it before that...if Vula can ever beat Civa or if there is a double elimination round.

From Charity, we only heard about her weird left foot and her loud laugh.  She is tight with Mitch but the other 4 know that.

Kamilla proved to be the brains of the operation, the one capable of deciphering Kyle’s «Beware Advantage» riddle.  (BTW, if the 6 letters were painted on objects around camp, why did they give a poem to read and add the pictures of animals?  Was it only to confuse the solution?) That certainly solidifies her link on the group of 4 which should make it to the merger...unless there is a tribal reconfiguration before then.

On the search with David, it was Kyle who found the immunity idol and Kamilla made sure he’d regain his vote.  He now thinks he has security in the game.  Methinks his security is much more with Kamilla and David than with that idol!

If Kamilla is the brains of Civa, David is clearly its muscles.  He gave them an early lead in the challenge and even if they momentarily fell behind Lagi, Mitch’s accuracy gave them the win.

Chrissy is nicely ensconced in the tribe and she should have clear sailing until the merger.

Finishing with Lagi, we see that this is the tribe of all complications.  The interconnections here are extremely hard to read.

The mess started when Eva had her own moment of honesty, saying that Star should sit out the next challenge.  Star then told us that the tribe wouldn’t get rid of their muscle, namely Joe, Shauhin and Eva and that they would also keep their Brains represented by Thomas and Bianca so she felt insecure, leading to her prolonged search.  When Star found the «Beware Advantage» everything was turned upside down.  Telling first Joe and later Thomas and Bianca confused the situation even more.  She presents it as simply as giving cookies to her allies but those cookies could be landmines!

Thomas seems to be at the center of all the murkiness that obstructs our views of this group.  He earned the Steal-a-Vote advantage and lied about it to the tribe, saying he refused to play.  His only firm connection seems to be with Bianca and what’s even more maddening is that this tribe will probably not allow us to see their true colors.  Only the vote is «Truth» in this game and if they keep winning, we will not read their truth until they are confronted with others.  What seems evident about Thomas is that he is in Fiji to play hard, hard enough to hatch a plan to tell Star that they «lost» her puzzle clue.  That type of reckless gameplay often leads to a stunning blindside and already Shauhin reacted negatively to the suggestion.

Bianca’s closeness to Thomas should grant her safety as long as Lagi stays unchanged.  What does that tell us of her future?  Not much except we can recognize her strong ability to connect with others.  She seems tight with absolutely everyone and only Thomas seems to know that he can really count on her.

Shauhin is an interesting character:  We haven’t had much intel on him but everything seems to point in the direction of a strong player.  He was close enough to Joe that he was told about Star’s find and devious enough to consider not revealing the solution so that Star would remain voteless.  Where does he fit in a possible Thomas-Bianca-Star uprising? Tough to tell but he doesn’t seem to be in immediate danger.

Joe is in a delicate spot and he’s feeling it:  He seems to be everyone’s friend and the provider that everyone likes but his closeness to Eva could be his downfall.  The duo that resonated on our heartstrings last week could face a sudden threat.  Would the trouble-makers go for him or for Eva?  Maybe we won't find out until the merger.  The fact that their connection was featured in the recap augurs well for them but it isn’t a sure thing.

Eva showed her abilities in the challenge but her words about Star revealed her lack of social skills.  There was absolutely no need to designate someone to sit out a challenge before knowing its layout.  Then it would have been a simple matter of asking who is not a good swimmer.  Eva could face a serious problem if Lagi gets to meet Jeff in his temple of doom.  Hopefully, they don’t make that late night visit.

My episode 1 predictions need a bit of an adjustment so I’ll go with Joe, Shauhin, Bianca, Thomas, David, Kamilla, Kyle & Chrissy making the merger.

They should be joined by 2 more from the group of Eva, Star, Mitch, Charity, Justin, Sai & Cedrek.  It seems that only Mary is a safe bet to go before the merger!

Cross Justin off for making the merger! LOL! Sai is so determined and sneaky, she's definitely making the merge. I hope Eva makes it...yes, she does have some social skills that are lacking, but! ...and Mitch. Hoping Mary can make it farther too.

I think one of Thomas, Joe, or Shauhin will be toast in ep 4. I hope it's Thomas but I dunno. You just noted that Shauhin didn't appear to be in imminent danger but with a tribal switch up and a loss, that is exactly where he could end up.
