Allowing the players to impact the game even if they've been relegated to the Edge of Extinction, fire tokens could be a game-changing element of a competition that is still evolving after 20 years. Watch all-new episodes of Survivor: Winners at War on Wednesdays at 8/7c on CBS and CBS All Access. Transcript Jeff: We're introducing a new Survivor currency in the form of a Fire Token. You will each start the game with one fire token. Jeff: Where you will await your chance to get back in this game. Tony: Oh man! It has no value on Extinction but you can sell it to any player from the losing tribe for one Fire Token (Not read: If they do not pay for it by Sundown they cannot keep it and you will not receive your Fire Token) Dakal Day 1 (Note: Day 1 can not be right!) (See Sandra looking in her bag) Sandra(reading note): This is a Hidden Immunity Idol. It is good for your next Three Tribal Councils. But it will cost you One Fire Token. (Not read: If you do not pay for it by Sundown it has no power and you cannot keep it.) Sandra: There's nothing to think about! I'm buying this Hidden Immunity Idol with my One Fire Token. Regardless. Now I'm starting to realize the extreme importance of Fire Tokens and I'm making the deal. Edge of Extinction Day 5 (See Natalie at the water well spotting the rock with note tied around it) Natalie: This is an advantage that offer Safety Without Power. It allows a player to leave Tribal Council just before the votes are cast and return to camp. (Not read: They will not cast a vote but more importantly they cannot be voted out. This advantage has no value on Extinction but you can sell it to any player in the game for One Fire Token. If they do not pay for it by Sundown they cannot keep it and you will not receive your Fire Token) Sele Day 5 Jeremy(reading note): This is an advantage that offer Safety Without Power but it will cost you One Fire Token. Jeremy: I mean this has to be from Nat. I mean that's a no brainer right there. I'm buying this thing. (See Natalie solving the combination) Natalie: ...and I just slowly put the numbers in... Screams (as she solves it). Natalie(reads note): This Advantage will help a player find a Steal A Vote hidden at the other tribe's camp. Dakal Day 7 Sarah(confessional): I'm going through my bag and I see something in there that I didn't put in there. (Not read: There is STEAL A VOTE hidden at the other tribe's camp inside one of the player's torches.) Sarah(confessional): This Advantage allows you to sneak into their camp tonight and attempt to find it then return hopefully without getting caught. (Not read: If someone else finds it before you it's theirs. If it is not found tonight it is removed from the game and has no power) Sarah(confessional): This Advantage will cost you One Fire Token (Not read: If you do not pay for it by Sundown this offer is rescinded) Sarah(confessional): Oh man! I'm going for it. Natalie(confessional): Everything that I'm doing is going to lead to my eventual goal here which is to get off this Bloody Island and get back there. (See Natalie looking out at a tribe island). I'm already affecting the game. That's totally different from the last Edge of Extinction. (See Natalie counting the shells on the bamboo stick) So although I don't get the excitement of having an Idol and playing an Idol... (See Natalie carrying water back to camp) Things I do here have a ripple effect on the game. (See Natalie climbing the rocks on the shore) It can end up changing the entire course of the season. Almost all Instant Insanity Puzzles have the same orientation of colors on the 4 blocks just the colors are different. It is possible to memorize the pattern of colors on the 4 blocks and which pairs of colors need to be "hidden" on the Top and Bottom of the cubes. Trial and error is a slow way to solve this problem, as there are 331,776 possible arrangements of the four cubes (6 faces, 4 turns = 24 positions of each cube, times four cubes, totalling 331,776). And there are 24 arrangements of the cubes because the order doesn't matter for the solution. Michele Fitzgerald wants an opportunity to prove herself to the Survivor fandom, to undo the contentiousness from her victory years ago. But for season 13 victor Yul Kwon, his time out on season 40 is a different story, as his second Survivor bout is all about supporting a friend fighting her own battle back home. In the exclusive clip below from tonight’s episode, Yul reveals to his tribe members–and the audience–his reasoning for playing a second time: To raise awareness for ALS. Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, the nervous system affliction causes loss of muscle control and is currently without a cure. It’s been nearly 15 years since we saw you and Jonathan meet in the Cook Islands. Talk to me about how your relationship with him (and subsequently Stacy) has grown and changed since you played together. It turns out that it’s a lot easier to be friends with someone when you’re not hungry, paranoid, and playing a zero-sum game for a million dollars (Laughs.) My relationship with Jonathan during Cook Islands was sort of a roller coaster. We started on a down note when he stole my chicken during the marooning. Then we became allies following the tribe swap. But then he backstabbed me during the mutiny. Then he became my ally again after the merge. And then I blindsided him and voted him off. Finally, he supported me at the last Tribal Council. It felt like a month living with my parents. But even as we were competing against each other, I always had the sense that we’d probably be friends outside the game. One thing that struck me about Jonathan was how much he loved his wife, Stacy, and his two kids, Cooper and Ava. His devotion to them was palpable. When I saw him kissing Stacy during the family visit, I remember hoping one day to find the depth of love they obviously shared. So what happened once you both got home? As I got to know Jonathan after the game, I began to see what a genuinely kind, thoughtful, and compassionate person he really is. When you’re playing Survivor, you can’t help but question everyone’s motives and behavior. Are they really being nice, or are they just pretending to be your friend? Is this person actually a dedicated family man, or is it just a facade to engender sympathy? Are they telling you the truth or lying to your face? In Jonathan’s case, I found all the negative things I had experienced about him in the game were just that, aspects of the game. While all the positive things I had seen were reflective of the person he really is. In time, I came to view him not just as a close friend, but someone I looked up to as a role model for the kind of husband and father I wanted to be someday. Through my friendship with Jonathan, I also became friends with Stacy. She’s brilliant, loving, independent, and a force of nature in her own right. She’s just as devoted to her family as he is, and she’s his partner in every respect; they write and produce together. As Jonathan would say, she’s the brains behind the whole operation. I’m just glad I didn’t have to play against her on Survivor, or else she would have crushed me. Stacy Title and Jonathan Penner On that note, can you elaborate on the journey Stacy has undergone since she was diagnosed with ALS back in 2017? In the fall of 2017, Stacy started experiencing some unusual symptoms, like stumbling when she tried to walk and slurring her speech. She went through a long series of tests and was diagnosed with ALS, which is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that gradually takes away your control over your body. By the fall of 2018, she couldn’t walk or speak at all. Her breathing started to fail, so she went on a ventilator. And since she couldn’t move her mouth or swallow, she went on a feeding tube as well. For the past year, the only part of her body that she’s been able to reliably control is her eyes, which she uses to communicate using eye-tracking technology that allows her to spell out letters on a computer screen slowly. What makes things even harder, perversely, is that she still has full sensation. She can still feel every itch, every uncomfortable position, or every pain throughout her body. I can’t even begin to imagine what she must be going through. As for Jonathan, his life literally revolves around Stacy. She requires 24-hour care, and as her primary caretaker, he’s with her most of every day and night. She can’t do anything on her own, so he and a nurse have to handle her every need: Dressing, bathing, moving, bathroom, even placing a towel in her mouth every few minutes to absorb the saliva that would otherwise come down her face. Her bedroom is packed with all sorts of medical equipment and accessories, and the constant noises from these machines can be overwhelming. And needless to say, it’s been virtually impossible for him to work, which has exacerbated the crushing financial strain they’re already under. The hardest thing for them, though, isn’t the daily grind or even the knowledge that Stacy’s time is nearing an end. It’s knowing that at least one of their children will likely suffer the same fate. Stacy has a rare version of ALS called familial ALS, and each of their two kids has a 50% chance of inheriting genetic abnormality that causes the diseases. This is why they’re willing to be so public about their situation. They want to raise awareness and find a cure so that Cooper and Ava won’t have to go through this someday. When you got asked to play in season 40, at what point did you make a decision that you not only wanted to play for Stacy, but also donate your prize money should you win once more? It was a pretty straightforward decision for me since this was one of the main reasons I decided to go back on the show in the first place. I knew how much Stacy and Jonathan were struggling with ALS, and I felt at a loss for how to help. When I got the invitation to compete again, it occurred to me that this was a unique opportunity for me to help in a way I couldn’t do otherwise. If I wanted to raise awareness around Stacy’s story and help other families like them, it’s hard to imagine having a better platform than to go on–and ideally win–the 40th season of Survivor. Just to rewind a bit, when I won Cook Islands fourteen years ago, I wanted to do something useful with my 15 seconds of fame. Even before I went on, I told myself that if I got lucky enough to win, I wouldn’t squander the brief spotlight I was given to do something frivolous. Well, okay, maybe I could do a few frivolous things, but not exclusively. One cause I’ve always been passionate about is trying to raise awareness around the need for more minority bone marrow donors. In my sophomore year of college, my roommate and best friend from childhood was diagnosed with leukemia. He was told that unless he received a bone marrow transplant from a compatible donor, the disease would be terminal. Unfortunately, the number of registered minority bone marrow donors in the national bone marrow registry was abysmally low, so he couldn’t find a match. I organized several bone marrow drives to find him a match, but we didn’t succeed, and he passed away in our senior year. In the years that followed, I continued to organize bone marrow drives in his memory. But it was always incredibly hard to get attention and attract people. After I won Cook Islands, I was flooded with requests to speak and make appearances, so I figured that I could leverage these to organize bone marrow drives on a scale I couldn’t do before. So I made it a condition that if I spoke or made an appearance, the sponsors would have to let me organize a bone marrow drive. That worked really well, and for the next couple of years, I went around the country organizing dozens of bone marrow drives, which found three compatible matches for at least three people. That was one of the most gratifying things I’ve ever done. My hope this time around is to do something similar by using the platform I have to refocus attention towards something that matters much more than the competition itself. I know that the odds of me actually winning are pretty slim. But I’m hopeful that if I get far enough, we can still do something meaningful for Stacy’s family and others like them. Did you have a conversation with her and Jonathan about that before going out to Fiji? If so, what was their reaction? We had a long conversation about a range of things before I went. Most of all, I wanted to see if they felt comfortable with me sharing their story during interviews and filming. The pain their family is going through is intensely personal, and I wasn’t sure if they wanted to maintain their privacy as opposed to having the details of their experience surfaced publicly. But they didn’t hesitate for a moment. More than anything else, they want to raise awareness and find a cure before this disease potentially manifests in their children. They gave me their full support to do anything that would help bring visibility to this issue. While it’s an incredible cause to play for, I can imagine that also may put more pressure on you to make it far, considering you’re not just representing yourself out there. Did you find that was the case? I did feel pressure to do well, especially since it felt like there was so much at stake. But it was also liberating in a strange way. Since I was playing for something besides just myself–and for friends who urgently needed help–I felt free to play harder and with less guilt than I would have otherwise. On Cook Islands, I really struggled with all the manipulation and deception required to navigate the game effectively. I tried my best to avoid lying outright. But even so, the duplicity and misdirection I instigated weighed heavily on my conscience. This time around, I didn’t feel the same emotional burden, and I felt less constrained to do whatever I thought was necessary to win, even if it meant lying through the skin of my teeth. What prompted you to decide to open up to your tribemates about Jonathan and Stacy, especially considering the high stakes with which everyone is playing? To my recollection, I think this came up spontaneously. I don’t remember the exact circumstances, but I think someone may have mentioned hearing that Stacy was sick, which prompted me to share what she and Jonathan were going through. At some point, I got pretty choked up and started crying; I had been keeping this bottled up for a while. So I walked away to collect myself. Sarah followed me to express her support, and we had another chat about it. In retrospect, I don’t know if showing my emotions hurt or helped me in terms of the game itself, but it definitely wasn’t intentional on my part. I cried a few times in my confessionals, though. Stacy Title and Jonathan Penner While the episode will be the first time you’ve talked about playing for Stacy and Jonathan on screen, you also mentioned it on your social media and preseason interviews. Can you talk to me about connecting again with the Survivor community, especially around this cause? After living under a rock for the past thirteen years, I realized that I had basically zero fans on social media. I had never posted on Instagram, and I hadn’t tweeted in something like six years. I also realized that I couldn’t do a very good job of promoting ALS awareness if the only people who knew about it were Stacy, Jonathan, and my wife. So I decided to become active on social media and engage with the Survivor community through forums like Reddit. It’s actually been a lot more fun than I thought. I’ve always assumed I had a nerdy sense of humor, which I spent most of my life hiding from the public for fear of social ostracization. But as it turns out, a lot of people seem to appreciate posts about Dungeons and Dragons and breadfruit as much as I do. My larger hope, of course, is that Stacy’s story will resonate with the Survivor community and that they’ll help amplify the message and support ALS charities through donations.
