Overall, the quality level of the singers may be higher than Idol, at least when comparing current seasons. But this show is starting with that old LCS advantage: they've already screened their auditionees, tossed the chaff, refused to allow any potential brilliance to walk in off the street, and all they have to do is present whatever they've got left to whatever applause it can muster. Most of which is professional singers with years of experience. Or in other words, this thing is pre-rigged. You're welcome. The question of rigging is a really fun one here, especially when it comes to judge/coach selection of teams. You don't even need to have them wearing earpieces: just vibrate the chair for that Turn Around Now, Damn It signal. Have the teams been chosen before the competition even starts? Do the judges know who every is (along with what they look like) before they ever walk in? Does NBC enjoy lying about its reality shows as a hobby and a religious devotion? But if we assume the show is at least partially real... making the coaches fight over who they want is a good way to spice up the show: once the egos are involved, then it's all about their team, making them look good, and they may actually put some effort into winning because the victory is all theirs. There just hasn't been any real fighting yet. This show needs a touch of Shark Tank -- and if NBC wasn't so cheap, that could take the form of a bidding war. (I'm sure they'd allow it if the celebs were spending their own money.) No real feel for the coaches yet, mostly because they haven't had the chance to show how they'd work as mentors. However, Christina would seem to be the Designated Ditz. And given what we've learned recently, the Designated Paula in need of a Designated Driver. And the rotating chairs are just that cheesy. I'm taking a wait-and-see approach with this one. But I at least want to try and spot the strings hanging from the rafters.

My thoughts, from a less snarky point, more lemming like approach.Loved it. I don't care that we didn't see auditions, it's tv, it's never going to be authentic and as someone that goes to "battle of the bands" and local "american idol-like" talent shows, there is a reason for that. I want to believe The Four has no idea what the contestants look like, their age, weight or their body piercings. I'm tired of the cookie cutter kids on AI. But that being said, I did love the little, shy 16 yr old that Blake chose. I loved that Frenchie is back and loved her "up yours AI, I'm still here and kicking" attitude. Adam is hilarious as a "judge/mentor" whatever they're calling them. I know Cee Lo is known for one song that's become known for it's PG-13 retitle, but had anyone here heard of him prior to this year? I had to google him and still don't know why he was picked for this show. Floating my cares away with Agman - 2011

LAST EDITED ON 05-02-11 AT 08:13 PM (EST)Curiously interesting format. Hand pick the contestants, turn the judges' Enterprise chairs around with their backs to the contestants, bring the contestant on stage, and only listen to the vocal performance with no stage theatrics or images to sway them. Let the judges decide who they like through a real action (turning the chair around) and then explain why, particularly if more than one judge hits the I Want You turnaround button. No gong button. If it comes to that, it'll be no I Want You buttons. It's also interesting to note that age isn't a barrier here. Although she wasn't selected, one elderly lady got a chance to perform and did a pretty good job of it. The bar is apparently being set high, but not biased based on age or personal sex appeal. It is compelling TV? We'll see if I last the hour. (edit to come later) Well, I'm still here, as I skip the reading of a good book that I'm in the midst of to continue watching this... No doubt the song quality is higher here than on AI and for that reason it's pleasing to watch, along with the judges reactions to what they hear (but do not see yet) with the later banter between the judges. What's missing here that's on AI is train wreck potential. We may see some fast trains, some slow trains and maybe even some stopped trains, but I can't imagine there will be any train wrecks on The Voice. And what is it that captures America's short attention span? Sirens, red lights and accidents that we all saw coming just before it happened. We won't see that here. After watching some more... What The Voice has that AI is lacking is the judges have a real stake in this themselves. None of this tongue bathing unless they really want the contestant on their team. And it gets interesting when all the judges want someone (like that guy with a white cap and guitar slung over his back) and suddenly they're the ones competing against each other! No Kool-Aid in their drinks. (Come to think of it, I didn't notice any Coke cup holders in their captain's chairs.) As an aside, I can imagine Steve Tyler hitting that I Want You button as soon as he hears a female voice. Careful there, Steve, what you hear is not maybe what you expect to see. To close the show, I appreciate the both the clarity and brevity of the upcoming format of the Battle Round (in what looks like a boxing ring!) with 4 contestants remaining per judge, who have to cull their own herd. After that America decides on the judge (I'm still not quite sure how this part works). Smart (if not obvious) move by NBC to have it on the non-AI night of Tuesdays at 9. AI loyalists may watch this out of curiosity and grow to like it and even become loyal to it, but they won't surrender their AI loyalty to an unproven upstart if both are on at the same time. Smart, even, to have the reply on an AI night, after the AI show, to satisfy the hard-core song competition RTV junkie. All in all, thumbs up for an interestingly different singing competition format that not only pits the contestants against each other, but also the judges/coaches. I'll be watching this next week.

27. "RE: Blind auditions, part 2" |
LAST EDITED ON 05-03-11 AT 10:03 PM (EST)Just checking on the ratings and comments here. Color me somewhat surprised as I had thought DWTS had a faithful following. All in all the first episode of The Voice was great and it beat Dancing with the Stars and Glee in the ratings. It will be interesting to see how it holds up this week. I have a feeling it is going to be just as big and is just getting started. And it looks like they're pulling out all the stops when it comes to the coaching, making AI's amateurish mentor thing pale in comparison. Hope we see them in action. Once the teams are formed the coaches will be charged with prepping the singers and according to show sources they will get some help. R&B singer Monica will work with Cee Lo Green. Christina Aguilera will be joined by singer-songwriter Sia Furler. Adam Levine will be joined by producers Adam Blackstone and country music legend Reba McEntire will be joining Blake Shelton. These new additions will help the coaches as they advise their teams. Also, EW's take. Head to head, The Voice beat Glee (4.6 versus 3.4 from 9-9:30) and Dancing With the Stars (4.9 versus 3.5 from 9-10). It improved the time period versus NBC’s season average in the demo by 89 percent (5.1 versus 2.7) and in viewers by 60 percent (11.7 million versus 7.3 million). Excluding sports, the 5.1 rating achieved by The Voice was NBC’s highest in the time period since May 12, 2009. That's a long two-year wait.

Three of the judges don't quite make up their entire team quota of 8, so several past performers get a second chance. It looks like they picked those who were oh-so-close to being chosen earlier, particularly where one or more judges had wished they picked them. Finally, we have the top 32, 8 to a judge, although I can't recall about half of them. Next week is the 'battle rounds' where the teams of 8 get culled down to a more manageable size. Again, a fairly interesting watch. There's some genuine humor, fun and chemistry on stage between the judges and their contestants as well as between the judges themselves. I think I saw they switched this to 10 EST next week, which may or may not be a good idea, hard to say. We'll see what the ratings look like this week.

29. "RE: Blind auditions, part 2" |
Given that I was the only one trying to do live commentary during the premiere (and just watched the thing last night), the lack of activity didn't come as a surprise...Two things hit hard last night. The first was the one where I expect to see immediate retaliation: Adam's declaration that any single person the coaches were rejecting could win American Idol. Nigel isn't going to take that well. Second: the best undiscovered talent? Oh, so we're going to be playing up this lie again, are we? The sheer number of previous releases present with this group could populate a few garage sales with room left over for a poker folder in front of their corner concert venue. And eventually, someone's going to bring that up -- but it won't be NBC. Watching the judges not pick was like following an ultra-conservative gambler with a one-day giveaway slot dollar coupon. It's technically the casino's money, but you're not gonna spend it. 'That machine doesn't look right -- no, I think I'll wait on the next machine -- I think that table's cold right now -- I don't like the way the symbols lined up for that last guy -- what do you mean, 'the bus is here'?' Can't take a singer because a better one might be coming down the pike next, and you keep thinking that way right up until you run out of river. After that, it really turned into luck of the random draw order for the second-timers (who can't like their odds). And forward we go to the battle rounds, which would have extensive spoilers if anyone cared enough to look. We've gotten our first glimpse of the non-stories (although this show was at least generous enough to drop names -- here, CeLo, add this to the pile), and that makes it easier to spot who won't be going through. If the coaches truly make the pairings, some of the winners will be near-automatics. But the hard part starts next week -- if there's effort involved at all. How much personal investment do the coaches really have in this? Not as much as the cameras are playing for, I think -- not yet. When it comes down to the voting rounds and they're no longer involved in the cuts, that's when they might risk a little emotional attachment. And we won't know how much coaching they're really capable of until we see how they do as teachers. Christina will be a detailed technical instructor just as soon as she proves she is. Which doesn't mean she can't do it -- it just means we haven't seen it from her. And the same applies to the other three in equal measure: place your bets... Oh, and I do think the timeshift to 10 p.m. EDT is a world-class mistake. But it's NBC, so 'world-class mistake' is the ground floor. (Just wait until they push it to Saturdays.)

LAST EDITED ON 05-04-11 AT 10:01 AM (EST)Two things hit hard last night. The first was the one where I expect to see immediate retaliation: Adam's declaration that any single person the coaches were rejecting could win American Idol. Nigel isn't going to take that well. Yeah, I caught that but didn't quite get all of the wording of it, as quickly as he said it in passing with his hand raised up as if to signal 'this is how high our bar is'. While I don't think what he said is true, I would agree that at least half of these 32 contestants are a notch above the likes of Jacob and Haley, who are in the F5 of AI. And yup, as soon as I saw the 10 EST time announcement during a commerical break, I asked myself why. The premiere got off to a great ratings start, this week may not be as high but still good, and usually the 10 EST slot is for leftovers or shows soon to be dropped to the cutting floor. (eta) Just checked why the 10 EST time slot. It looks like Biggest Loser ballooned from 60 minutes this week to 120 next week, squeezing The Voice into the late time slot.

Really smart move of him to do a Dixie Chicks song, when Blake was the one that almost took him the first time and commented "this is a country dude." Nobody else seems to have adjusted like that.

38. "Battle Round 1 (of 4)" |
LAST EDITED ON 05-10-11 AT 11:48 PM (EST)New format this week. Looks like a boxing ring. Also new time. Figures NBC would slot this into the 10 p.m. zone after the Biggest Loser. Looks like each judge/mentor picks a song in advance and a pair to vie against each other, coaches them along with the co-mentor next to a Roland piano, conduct a little chat on white couches, do a daytime rehearsal together, and then send them on stage like a pair of gladiators. Both sing together, simultaneously switching between solo and duet, free to dance on stage and even (if one so chooses) in the other's face. The solos make it easier to compare voices, but it can be more difficult to tell who's who vocally in the duets. For now, I'm assuming no physical contact is allowed, although a little stage smack through intimidating moves and shout overs seems to be permissible. The other judges get to make their comments and give a tip of the hat to one of the battle round contestants. (Would they give more glowing praise to the weaker one, just to improve their own team's chances?). The decision rests solely with the judge-mentor of the two contestants, with no voting. Given the quality of the talent chosen so far, it can be unpredictable who'll the judge/mentor will choose. Considering that the two contestants have shared plenty of time with the mentor/judge and co-mentor over the piano, in couch chat, and in rehearsal, it's likely the judge/mentor will already have an idea who they'd favor based on voice, personality, attitude and potential even before they hit the stage. It'll be interesting to see if the ratings hold up at the 10:00 time slot. Now that the novelty of the Battle round has passed, will viewers watch the next three weeks as the herds are culled down from 32 to 16? While we see each of the 32 over four weeks, they're leaving out 3/4 of the comp each week and we're already forgetting who they are. It makes you wonder what they're doing while the other 1/4 are working on the Battle round. Stay tuned (so NBC hopes). MJ of AI blog fame also seems to be interested... good live recap, complete with song titles and contestant names and winners, here.

I think Blake and Cee Lo made a mistake.Blake showed a little insecurity show in his pick. I think Tyler was head and shoulders above Patrick - as did the other judges. But Patrick was "safer". I was disappointed with him and felt sorry for Tyler (can't remember if Tyler had more than one judge vieing for him but if he did he chose the wrong one). And what was Cee Lo thinking putting Niki and Vicci up against each other?! Ugh. Although I think he chose right between the two (I love Vicci) I think he lost a good contestant in Niki. But he did tell Niki to call him after it was all said and done and he'd help her. I think NBC has a hit. Floating my cares away with Agman - 2011

And yet the show itself keeps saying 'undiscovered' as if they're praying someone will eventually believe it. 'Unrecognized by the general population' would be closer. And would serve as filler.

I agree that Blake made the wrong choice. I wonder if there is "encouragement" for him to lean towards country performers. Nobody is more country than Reba.I wasn't sorry to see Frenchie go. Those two were portrayed as being kind of nasty. Adam Levine is pretty funny and I like the interaction between the judges. Four songs in an hour and a fairly convoluted format could lose people, especially if anyone watches TV live anymore. I still like it.

My take on this (and I admit I may be projecting)--Homophobia. I had a strong feeling when Blake chose him that they were a bad fit. He was the only one who turned around, I think, and he regretted it. Tyler was better, but no way was Blake going to choose him. There are number of gay contestants on here (4), which surprised and pleased me. Um, and Frenchie didn't go, she was chosen. It's a Tribe!

54. "Battle Round 2" |
LAST EDITED ON 05-17-11 AT 11:59 PM (EST)Welcome to 8 minutes of song time and enough filler time left over for you to play an entire album of your choice on the side. We'll see if the ratings indicate whether people are skipping the remainder of the battle rounds until voting starts or they keep watching to see which 4 more make the final 16. I still vaguely recall a few of last week's winners, which isn't saying much because 'a few' was all there were. Nakia vs Tje Austin: Maybe I didn't notice it last week, but it seems this week they started showing the names of the contestants and the song they're singing just before the round begins. As usual, and rather annoyingly, there's a commercial break the very second before the decision is announced. This time in favor of Nakia, although I liked the smoother sound of the retro-fro'ed Tje Austin better. Jared Blake vs Elenowen (guy-gal duo): One of the few shows that actually allow a duo to compete as a single contestant. But it's not an unfair advantage with 2 vs 1 in song, as 2 don't sound so good in trio with an odd man out. Heavily tattooed Jared with the bandana over a bald head takes the round. Angela vs Javier: These two actually make a pretty good duo. Javier wins the round, probably based on potential and skill, although Angela was the one who was more fun to watch. Beverly vs Justin: I think Justin was out of his element here, with a song he didn't even know. Still he did well with it. But Beverly is a totally different critter. She brings something on stage you don't typically see from a gal, starting with a bald head! You can guess the rest. Another comment: It has to be pretty tough to have to perform a song already produced a certain way by the judge-mentor/assistant and to sing it well both along with and versus a competitor. There's no chance to pick a song, or even pick how to sing it. That's already decided during practice and rehearsal, so it doesn't leave the contestants a lot of leeway to "make it their own" or do it like they've done it before on their own. All in all, not a bad week with somewhat more interesting contestants this time around. Ratings prediction: Close to what it was last week maybe with a slight drop relative to all shows at same dreaded time slot.

Christina Aguilera & 'The Voice' Gets Coveted Timeslot On NBC Following 2012 Super Bowl LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Christina Aguilera will once again be a big part of Super Bowl Sunday... sort of.
The singing superstar, who famously flubbed the National Anthem at the 2011 event, will now join her fellow judges - country darling Blake Shelton, Maroon 5 vocalist Adam Levine and the sassy Cee Lo Green - on "The Voice," which NBC revealed on Tuesday is getting the coveted time slot after the 2012 big game, which will air on the network. "There is no better showcase on television than to follow the Super Bowl, and we believe 'The Voice' is deserving of such high-profile exposure," Chairman of NBC Entertaiment, Bob Greenblatt said in a statement. "The attention grabbing blind audition phase of 'The Voice' has mass appeal and will fittingly team up with the biggest sporting event of the year."
The post-Super Bowl episode of "The Voice" will air on February 5, 2012. Thanks to the excitement of the blind auditions, where the coaches -- Christina, Blake, Adam and Cee Lo - picked contestants they couldn't see, the show is already a success in its first season.
Presently the coaches' own picks are battling it out with each other for a top spot with their mentor. They'll then move to live rounds where the singers will compete with vocalists from different mentors. "The Voice" currently airs on Tuesdays at 10/9 C on NBC. Beginning June 7, the show will move to 9/8 C.

Sweet gal, potential crush material, but didn't care much for the striped dress which less than flattered her. She also wasn't the showlady on stage, standing there delivering her song, and will likely get voted out. But - but - close your eyes and she has a really amazing sound in her voice. I'd dig this in a download, even if I wouldn't bother much with the youtube vid.

I voted for her hoping she doesn't get voted out. Out of everyone she has the most unique voice. Love it. Yes, she needs alot of help on stage presence but...

Agree. Her voice alone won't get her far in this business. She needs to develop more. If she survives, I hope Blake gets her some good style and loosens her up. The poor girl constantly looks afraid. -A Tribetastic Creation

Big Girls Don't Cry1-855-VOICE-06 She's got a cadre of boy toys for her backup dancers who are doing their best Night At The Roxbury as she walks by them initially... Midway through the song, the boys have exited stage left and right... I think there was a slight hiccup in her voice there, as well...

LAST EDITED ON 06-08-11 AT 05:19 PM (EST)My vote: Dia. That's all. Judges save: Xenia has a unique sound, and as much as I like the rocker showman Jared and the cowboy Patrick, I'd like to see her make the next round. While she looks tentative on stage, close your eyes, and she brings you into a different world of sound. Her future hopes (if they are not dashed already) will depend on her stage presence rather than her distinguished unique singing capability. Edit to add Chritina's team choices: Lily's out in my books, leaving Raquel, Beverly and Frenchie. While Raquel's performance was quite good, it didn't leave a lasting impression in my ear. Beverly is the obvious oddball choice, going all out all the time. And Frenchie is the power diva who kind of amazes me. My vote: Frenchie. Judges save: Beverly for the pow factor, but if not her then Raquel.

Indeed! My very first thought was "This is The Voice answer to Scotty McCreery"! I don't think he'll get the girly vote that Scotty did, but he was pretty good, even without the trademark Scotty basso.

Truth be told, I actually like Scotty's sound better. With Scotty, you can skip the vids, download the itunes, close your eyes, and easily imagine that he's got a lifetime of platinum records already behind him. This Patrick guy? Well, yeah, he looks better, stages better, but I'm not so sure he sounds better.

Carson gives the band pimpage, and they do deserve it for their performances tonight. When Loves Take Over Christina has Frenchie change out the Christina Glory Notes for something more concise that's more her style.
Laser light show, dancers on mini-stages everywhere, including on platforms onstage...

Power diva. She looks it, she sounds it, she sings it. While this song wasn't my cup of tea, I sure felt the storm in the teacup.

They're backing Xenia and Raquel Castro. (This voting format allows them to boost one member of each team, so there's no problem with splitting.)

All of last night's performances were great, but I thought Raquel Castro's was the weakest.Several times throughout the show, Christina looked like a blonde version of Snooki.

I've put in a request promote this show as one of shows in the Other Shows forums. It looks like The Voice will be around to stay awhile and has garnered pretty high ratings relative to other RTV shows.

Yeah, we know there is at least a second season already in the planning/casting/audition stages... I think one thing to wonder is will they take the Top 16 or Top 8 or whatever on the road with the coaches...?
