Take it from someone who knows some Chinese. It's pronounced "Whoee" in one syllable. Maybe a better way to explain is that it sounds like the French word for "yes" (oui) except the H is NOT silent.

That's what I assumed it sounded like, but when I looked up some reference, it said it was actually pronounced like "way", not "oui". Anyway, definitely not "who"!

Just wanted to add my 2 cents I am chinese american and can speak mandarin and i know people with the last name "Hui" and in English they pronounce it "hway" but in chinese it was totally different, "shu". I don't know why, something about how it originates from Cantonese and changes in Mandarin.

Just a thought that there is a military medal called the "Distinguished Flying Cross" -- DFC. Does anyone know if, as a Navy man, Bill flew planes?

Bill was in the Navy Medical Corps and did not fly any planes. He received the Defense Superior Service Medal; Legion of Merit (two awards); Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal; Meritorious Unit Commendation; National Defense Service Medal (two awards); Humanitarian Service Medal; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Vietnam Service Medal (with 2 battle stars) and Fleet Marine Force device. Sorry, no DFC.
