"The Black Cloud"

One of the biggest occurrences on Lost that does not seem explicable by anything other than the supernatural, is the Black Cloud monster.

I had an idea for a possible explanation. It is not supernatural, but more like plausible science fiction. Has anyone read the book "Prey" by Michael Crichton? I don't have the book anymore, but I recall it was about the development, by scientists, of nano-sized "robots" that appeared as a black swarm. The swarm could take on different shapes and could be violent, depending on how it was controlled. Like Crichton's other books (e.g. Jurassic Park) it does push the envelope of what is believable but there is a possibility it could happen. The concept of this swarm of nano-machines seems plausible. Has anyone else read this book or have any ideas?

Hmmm...my other half said the same exact thing about the black cloud and the nano-bots (as he called them). I know I read somewhere that "nothing on the island is inexplicable" (or something to that effect), so we were trying to come up with anything plausible for the cloud that wasn't a supernatural explaination. I came up with none...he was reading the book at the time and mentioned the "bots". We are pretty sold on the idea, but we haven't really looked into it any further...I tend to forget about things that I am not constantly reminded of. Since we haven't seen the cloud in a while, I'm wondering when it will pop up again.
