Nigel. Like the way hip hop is going. N&T are great choreographers for the humor they add to the work. Will the routine be memorable by the end of the evening.
Mary. Hate to put a damper on the first number of the year...but I'm not going to. I like it. I don't care what age you are you are a beautiful strong dancing machine. Jamie for West Coast Swing they found just the right type of number for you. Cotton Candy Hip Hop, light and fluffy and sweet.
Dan. I like cotton candy. It wasn't quite there. You were given the opportunity of a lifetime and there was no funk at all. You have to find when it is time to break it down, it all hit on the same level. Not bad, not great.

Way too cheerleader-ish for my taste, and WTF was up with the pantsing? That was just tacky and ew. I don't need to see that boy in his underwear, tyvm. Now, if it were someone I was attracted to, I might be all for it, but him? No. I did not like that.
And I was very surprised by the amount of applause Rayven got. I guess she must have a big fan base already, because it seemed to me that she was cheered for the loudest during initial intros. Interesting.

the depantsing thing was a big turn off for me. But it wasn't really the dancers faults, more of the choreographers. They could have made it more humerous with funny short or something instead of the tighty underwear. I have an 8 yo watching with me, after the audion with the underwear boy I really don't want to have to monitor what she sees on here.

I totally agree. I did not like the clothing at all, especially her pants.
I felt she wasn't dirty enough for it, or like Dan said there wasn't any funk. She was too ballroom in some of her moves.

Susie auditioned in Milwaukee. She is a high school teacher. Parents born in Cuba, she was born in Miami.
Marquis from the DC auditions. Had some issues growing up. She had to fight for dance.
Doing the Smooth Waltz with Hunter Johnson.
Marquis keeps forgetting his feet. She can't get the heel turn.
Dancing to: Dark Waltz Hayley Westenra.
He is in a dark navy suit (could be the blue light) She is in a light blue flowy long dress.

Nice lift at the end, but mostly meh.
Nigel. Very difficult choreography. Didn't quite get it right, but I don't think the audience knew that. You carried on all the way through that. Hard to get votes for, not see the personality. Marquis your technique was fantastic. For a salsa dancer you have beautiful line, you've had good training.
Mary. What is so very very hard is that a dance like the waltz and this is the most slow and controlled dance with adrenaline. You guys pulled it off, you did a great job. The lines were beautiful, there were so many great things and this is not your element. I'm blown away.
Dan. I felt like I was watching an almost perfect ending to a love story. Sexy, romantic, smooth. I loved it.
I may have to watch that again.

I expected to see a mom dance with her son, but my goodness they really pulled it off. He rose to the occasion (she is half again his size and three times as vibrant) and she softened her neon personality to match the nature of the dance.

I couldn't remember how the first ten were cut; whether it was public votes or judges that determined the bottom three couples.
Everything is by public vote after the top ten are chosen, and the judges have no say.

The good thing about the Judges pick which of the bottom three go home is they can save someone that we didn't see much of in the auditions, but they know should get a second chance.
The bad thing is sometimes they let their favoritism show and keep someone that America is telling them needs to go home, NOW!

The interesting thing I've noted in the past two years is that a stronger partner will keep the couple out of the bottom three; once they hit the top 10 and the dancers are voted on individually, the weaker partner suddenly discovers he/she isn't all that and gets booted rather quickly.
I'm glad the judges get to decide during this time. During the rounds a couple years ago, there was a very popular hip hop dancer with charming personality. He sucked at everything else. Once he hit the bottom three, the judges wasted no time in booting him off — I think had he made it to the top 10, people would have kept him over more talented dancers.

Matt from Salt Lake City auditions. Dad signed him up for dance.
Jazz routine with Mandy Moore.
They are bothe way tall. She is 5'9" and he is 6'3" Matt says it is short people choreography.
Dancing to: Tainted Love
Dressed in black leather jackets. She is in an oddly cut short skirt.

Nigel. Fun routine, need more personality from Matt. You are a very upright dancer, like a broomstick up where the sun don't shine. You gotta get down into it. Especially when you are being a character. Relax a bit more and feel it. Kourtni you are unique and you look a bit like Princess Diana, you are already well known and I think you will do very well.
Mary. I thought you did a great job. You are so technically trained you make it look easy. When you tried to do that lift it should have gone flying and it was heavy. Kourtni you are sexy in that leather. Not quite hot tamale sexy.
Dan. Great choreography, dancers, concept. So-so performance. Played it safe. You have to hit it hard from the beginning, you have to do better than that.
Cat feels almost normal sized with this couple.

Boy, Nigel really has that undermining thing down, doesn't he. What a rude thing to say. I personally liked Matt and thought he was one long tall drink of water. I thought Courtney looked heavy, not the lift. She's a good dancer but I think her movements are heavy in general. Matt, on the other hand was smooth and light on his feet.

I loved this. The whole Jewel thief theme I think was good. They seriously need new camera people though, because they pan and circle way to much.

Man, am I in a bad mood tonight or what? I have not been impressed with anything so far and most of the contestants (and judges for that matter) are annoying me.
I did NOT think that Chelsea was good in this. She was way too stiff and her hips were not moving much at all. She really started to loosen up towards the end, but it was too little, too late for me. And I thought some of her lines were really ugly (bent legs when it would've been prettier if they were straight). Thayne was working it though! I thought he was by far the better of the pair. Of course the judges don't agree with me. Whatev. I only know about dance what I've learned from reality shows, so I guess I'm probably not the best judge. Heh.

This is why I don't like Mia Michaels. She should leave her criticisms for when she is judging. She is the only choreographer that regularly undermines her dancers before they ever hit the stage. He must have felt like crap standing there waiting to dance and listening to her comments. And way to build the confidence of Chelsea in her partner who was about to be flinging her around a bit.
I was prepared not to like this just because it was Mia - I don't usually like or get her stuff. But this was beautiful and suited both dancers beautifully. One of my favorites.

This is where the auditions hurt her instead of help.
You know, I pretty much felt the same way a few days ago, but after reading another board and their opinions, I think that all the judges waaaaaay overreacted to her whole "I won't come back next year" thing. It's not like she said if she didn't make it that she would quit dancing forever and never try for anything again. She simply said that she had tried out for the show twice, and if she didn't make it, she didn't think she'd want to do it again. SYTYCD is not the be all, end all of the dance world, not matter how much Nigel wants it to be. I think she got a bum edit, and I hope it doesn't hurt her because I thought she was great tonight.

I wasn't happy at first that Joshua was paired with Katee. He has been one of my favorites since his first audition, and Katee didn't leave a good impression from Las Vegas week. But you are right about the judges overreacting, and they both really killed it tonight, so I will give her another chance!
I loved the way his shirt moved from him to her at the end. Great ending.

Your friend is here tonight and she'll have to keep coming. He liked when he was on the floor and she brought him back up.
Mary, and when you did that you made it look effortless. you brought it back a few levels but hit the nuances. and a lot of people have a loved one in Iraq like me and it got me, brother.
Dan. Choreography breakdowns, when dancing in unison, and you killed that. you were hitting you were smooth and right on it. Katee, you held your own up there. I didn't think you had a chance. Bro, you come up as a humble guy and you are a different person on stage and you own it. You guys proved why you are on this stage.

Last year I was all over Dominic from the very beginning, and this year Joshua is my Dominic.
OMG...I loved this. I think Katee did better than I expected, but Joshua coulda done this one alone and still rocked, I cannot say the same for her. She was good, but could she have held the attention of the audience with the wow factor without him there...I am not sure.

Nigel. They are a hell of a couple. Look professional. Hunter did some very difficult choreography. Will you were majestic. Tremendous. I'm happy to see Debbie is not here if you dance like that. Jessica a few wobbles. If you throw yourself you can't wobble around. You were absolutely wonderful.
Mary. Break this down. One way I like my tango to be danced, and that was it!!! Strong. Passionate, on fire. Masculine. you owned it will. Fall away whisk to pivots, Hunter give them a break. A little bit uncomfortable at times Jessica but you are the couple to beat.
Dan. That is a big statement. You are asked to play a part you did that, you connected with each other and the audience. Hot like fire up there.

There was one good Disco routine last year with Sabra, but for the most part, I think the problem is the choreographer. She's tired and her routines are tired and predictable. Disco can and should be totally fun, but that routine was not.
The new hip hop choreographers are doing something different with hip hop. Not totally on board yet (sometimes they seem more like contemporary routines or 80s routines with a little hip hop thrown in), but at least they are fresh and new. They need to ditch the disco queen and get somebody new. I felt bad for Gev and his partner, because that routine was boring.

Mary. I think the disco queen is back. you were owning that more than Gev. When you do your thing you were on fire. Not quite as cheesy as back in Nigel's day. That routine was ten times tougher than Saturday Night Fever.

According to IMDB, Nigel was 28 years old when Disco was in its heyday, i.e. in 1977 when Saturday Night Fever came out . . . hardly past his prime. He is a child of that generation of dance, for sure.
It was a weak routine, not weak dancing. It was way less entertaining than other disco routines they've had on the show in the past. I think their resident Disco Queen needs to retire and let somebody else choreograph.

I have to say I am pretty damn disappointed by tonight's show. I think it's partially my fault, in that I get sooooooo excited for the premiere, I am bound to be let down. I remember feeling this exact same way last year, and then I was blown.away. by Mia's routine for Lacey and Kameron (Kameron! I miss you!!!! *weep*) and Wade's routine for Sara and Jesus (Jesus! You were robbed!!!! *weep*)
This year? Meh. I wasn't blown.away by anything really, even though I did *weep* a little at Joshua and Katee's routine. I thought she did a really great job, not only with the emotion, but with the dancing as well.
But. My opinions are subject to change after a second viewing. Now that I've been let down and my standards are low, I might enjoy the show more upon a re-watch. Which is what I'm off to do now.

It drives my poor husband completely insane. And now with the beautiful incomparable Danny last year? You get the idea. However. I very much enjoyed last night's show. It obviously helps that I know next to nothing about technique. I just know what I like to watch.
It also helps that I never ever expect anybody to be as fabulous as Blake. Danny was very unexpected.

I have yet to see the whole show yet, but I was impressed a couple dances there.
I remember being disappointed in last year's show, save the Lacey/Cameron dance. I think the majority of the problems I had with most of last year's shows was the set design and production — just about everything was in black or dark gray, so it made it rather bleak. This one was much brighter and energetic.
