"Season 3 Tryout Ep 1"
Did Leonid the Insignificant make his requisite appearance while I was off running a quick errand? I hate to think I missed him this summer.

I hate hate hate the tryout eps. Oh yeah, give us the full performance of the senile tapdancing 80 year old who didn't get the memo that vaudeville is dead, give us only 3 seconds of the performance by the 15 year old singer with the knockout voice.

New York and Chicago tonight, yippee. I liked the T-bone guy who barely played but danced around a lot, he was a lot of fun. He got a Vegas pass, hope he doesn't disappear like that fun guy last year.

Standouts tonight, the violin brothers and the opera guy. I liked the plucky old tapdancer, too, shame they sent her home.

Sexy Romanian twins with tin ears and no rhythm, what up, is there a Dracula girl requirement to get the show on the air? Actually the one on the left wasn't horrible, she could maybe be a backup singer. Okay, chorus, she really had no Pip potential.

And then there was the 4 year old singing some song from some Disney cartoon she's probably watched every single day of her life while her parents were sneaking some adulty time. She was okay but she has no chance to win the thing, did they give her a pass so her parents could enjoy some Vegas adulty time?

All in all, this year's Britney impersonator is much better than last year's, I still don't think lipsync is a real talent. But the makeup and hair extensions were really well done.

I didn't get to see all of it. Had to see Gordon axe Jen.
But I flipped back & forth a bit.
So, they gave a pass to the little 4 year old? She was cute and relly knew the song; but is cute worth that kinda prize?
Now the opera guy? That should win - that is real talent. Amazing.

The 4 yr old probably doesn't have a chance of winning but she was cute and did really good for her age. By the way the song she sang wasn't from a Disney cartoon. It was from An American Tale. (Universal/Steven Speilberg did it)

Welcome aboard.

Oh, there was a cartoon mouse that wasn't Disney? My bad.

Haven't made it all the way through ep 1 yet (it's on the TiVo), but so far my favorites were the violin brothers and the male baton twirler. I appreciated Sharon's nice gesture to the tap-dancing old lady, and thought the Romanian twins deserved an "X" and no vote from every single person in the audience.

And just what are the judges supposed to do with the 4-year-old? Yes, she was cute, and she sang reasonably well for a 4-year-old, but there's no way she's a winning talent. But even Piers couldn't "X" her and vote no, because she was cute and she sang reasonably well.

Does anyone besides me chuckle at a TV show titled "America's Got Talent" with two British judges out of three? Then again, American Idol has one British judge out of three, so at least there's a precedent.

Thank you jbug, I've never watched an episode of either of those shows. Guess this British judge thing is an epidemic after all.

Then do you need to know that even the host of So You Think You Can Dance is also British?

We're being overtaken, I tell you.

Oh, right, the baton guy. That really was some incredible pushing the envelope twirling, very impressive. Piers disappointed me, however, by not commenting on how the guy should do something about his wardrobe, that sparkle shirt has to go.

LAST EDITED ON 06-20-08 AT 07:49 AM (EST)

I have to say, episode 1 left a lot to be desired. Like Idol, i wish they would squeeze in more good auditions, and leave out the fluff.

The only two that really stick in my head are - obviously - the last guy, Nick (I believe), the opera singer. he was flippin amazing and should go far. I'm not sure if an opera singer can win in the US, but i guess we'll see. Secondly, the baton twirler was pretty good and that is a unique act in 2008.

I was quite disappointed that they pushed a 4 year old through to Vegas. Yes, it gets ratings, but eventually what does this do to that poor girl? She's only four years old. What they do for ratings is pretty sad sometimes.

Unlike a lot of people, the violin/hiphop brothers didn't impress me at all. Just shouting 'Yeah!' every few seconds while bashing on your violin does not make it hip hop, and does not make it fresh and unique.

i hope next week's auditions have more memorable auditions for two hours of time.

And that's why I never watch "America's Got Talent" live. I record it on the TiVo and zap through all the filler, recaps, commercials, Jerry Springer ramblings, etc. It ends up being considerably less than one hour of watchable content.

The Hip Hop brothers have been on Jack's Big Music Show, on Noggin and really are good. They do their own rapping on the show, and it is their own song.

Maybe if they had done that on AGT people might like them more.

I think we have the infernal act that just. won't. die. this season.

Whoever it was that impersonates Britney Spears. He/she/it needs to get off the stage. That doesn't take talent. Years of make-up, androgyny, and cheesy dance lessons? Sure. But talent? I wouldn't go that far. Not when the people who win are the truly gifted.

Terry Fator set the bar awfully high. People who go through should at least have some Fator-esque quality. This joker? Not a chance in hell.

Congrats Red Wings! 2008 Stanley Cup Champions!
