"How far will "24" go ...? (April 4 episode)"
Where does everybody else think that 24 is headed in tonight's episode? Let's see: the previews promise us that something especially shocking will happen, last week we saw one of Marwan's mercenaries taking off in a Stealth fighter that we know cannot land due to a maintenance problem, and Air Force One has intentionally remained in the air for several hours out of concern for the "safety" of the president.

Does anybody else suspect an impending mid-air collision and a fiery farewell to President Keeler?

2. "from 24 Insider"
hidden text
"Marwan speaks with Anderson who is flying somewhere over Southern California. Marwan tells Anderson that he will be taken care of and he will be given safe transport out of the country. Marwan is just telling him what he wants to hear. Marwan hangs up, he and his men have to be somewhere very soon. Meanwhile, aboard Air Force One, President Keeler speaks with his son and they talk about what Keeler should say when he addresses the nation. At CTU, Michelle calls Air Force One and notifies Keeler’s advisors that the President is being hunted down by an armed stealth aircraft. Keeler seems unfazed and he says that he is being protected by a group of fighter jets. But Michelle informs him that Anderson’s aircraft is invincible to radar. In his SUV, Jack is patched into the intercom aboard the stealth aircraft. Jack tries to speak with Anderson and he tries to reason with him but Anderson ignores him and turns off the intercom and he prepares to close in on Air Force One. Meanwhile, Keeler calls Vice-President Logan and notifies him of the situation and Keeler knows this may be the last time he speaks with him and he tells him that he may need to lead the Country in a time of chaos. Anderson makes his final approach and he remains undetected. He arms a missile and takes aim at Air Force One and fires. In Jack’s SUV his cell phone rings. It’s Chloe O’Brien. Chloe tells Jack that Air Force One just suffered an indirect missile strike and that pieces of the plane are scattering all throughout the desert." Source:TDT

Yeah, I knew that Palmer was returning soon, but I didn't know if that was spoiler info. As a former president, he doesn't fit into the order of succession though...

When can I safely look at the hidden text material? Speculation I like, but I don't want to know anything "official" in advance...

HD, the spoiler info doesn't specifically indicate whether President Keeler is killed or not.

My own speculation is that Air Force One is shot down by terrorists. The Vice President is either not competent or no one has confidence in him for some reason. The Ex-President (Palmer) steps in as some kind of "consultant".

Palmer is supposed to return for the final 6 episodes which is not for a couple more weeks.

OK, but if it is spoiler-ish at all, I think I'll pass until tomorrow. Thanks for posting it though, Bawdy!

Until then, I am going to pout - because I am away in a research trip and sharing a house with three other research fellows, one of whom wants to watch some silly basketball game at 9pm tonight. Doesn't he know that 24 is on?! So, I have to tape 24 and wait to watch it later. Sigh.

Oh great- according to the previews for next week- some local yahoos find the "football" from Airforce One (the briefcase with the nuclear codes) in the desert. CTU is trying to find them and Marwan is trying to find them. Also the Vice-President is about to be sworn in as President.

Next week from Fox:
AUDREY'S FEELINGS FOR JACK TURN COLD, AIR FORCE ONE DECLARES AN EMERGENCY. With Paul seriously injured after being shot protecting Jack, Audrey's feelings toward Jack turn cold. Meanwhile, Air Force One declares an emergency in the episode "Day 4: 11:00 PM-12:00 AM" Monday, April 11 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Guest Cast: Reiko Aylesworth as Michelle Dessler, Carlos Bernard as Tony Almeida, Mary Lynn Rajskub as Chloe, Louis Lombardi as Edgar Stiles, Arnold Vosloo as Marwan, James Morrison as Bill Buchanan, T J Thyne as Jason Girard, Claudette Mink as Kelly Girard, Jude Ciccolella as Mike Novick, Gregory Itzin as Charles Logan, Mesan Richardson as Simmons, Matt Gallini as Mahnesh, John Allen Nelson as Walt Cummings

spoilers (hidden text):
Air Force One makes a crash landing in the desert. Some campers find the briefcase with the nuclear codes. They call the police who put them in touch with Jack. Marwan is looking for the briefcase- that's why he shot down AF1.
No one knows if President Keeler is alive or dead so the Vice-President is about to be sworn in as President. Jack is trying to find the campers meanwhile Marwan finds them first. The Vice-President is notified that Marwan has the nuclear codes and the VP looks like he's about to faint. Source TDT

LAST EDITED ON 04-05-05 AT 05:22 PM (EST)

I do NOT like this turn of events. I do NOT want palmer back. I want Keeler and his son to be alive and kick Marwan's ass. Though there's little chance that, if on the slim chance they survived the crash, that they'd still be alive after Marwan got there looking for the football (unless they managed to escape, but I'm certainly not sure why they'd leave the vacinity, unless some of the SS also lived and shuttled them off, and in all the haste forgot the football)

and would they really swear the Veep in as Prez within half an hour without any type of confirmation on the prez? sheesh.

I'm seriously upset enough about this to consider not watching the rest of the season.

This is the first season I've actually watched in full (apart from about 3 of the early eps - not even consecutive - from season 1, maybe like half an ep from season 2, and the finale of season 3, i saw the rest on DVD)

I didn't think Terri's amnesia was too bad. And Kim and the Cougar was stupid, but it only lasted like 2 seconds in an entirely irrelevant sublot.

not like your most favorite president on 24 ever didn't deserve it

BUT! there was ticking with the final seconds ticking off. when Chappelle went out, when Mason died, when Palmer was poisoned, we got silence or heartbeats or something. Not with Keeler. That gives me hope he could be alive

ETA: and what happens if the Veep was sworn in mistakenly while the Prez is alive? THAT could be an interesting plot twist.

Edit 2 because Palmer wasn't shot, obviously

Interesting theory about the Veep. The actor playing him usually plays bad-guys so I didn't get a warm fuzzy feeling when I saw that he was the VP.

no, i've seen them all now. but i watched most of them straight through on DVD. sorry, i guess i didn't make that as clear as i could have. my point i guess is that i can't say anything about my "perseverence" over having to see Kim or Terri or any other outrageous plot "device" because i didn't have to wait a week between episodes. would i have been as disgusted as the long time fans had i not seen them all in one go? would i have continued to watch at all? those questions i simply cannot answer with any certainty. i think i have a different view from most people on past seasons because of the way i watched them (for instance, i loved the 3rd season, while most people here seem to like it by far the least - had i watched it in the same manner you all did, who's to say i wouldn't agree with you, or vice versa?)
it's an interesting question

ETA: so, speaking of the Veep, anyone think he had something to do with the strike on Air Force One? or will he make Palmer the new Veep?

Nah, that's why we met the son. As soon as I saw him, I told Mr. B we just met the unnamed ensign being sent on the away team. The "I love you and I'm proud of you, son" speech was the kicker, especially when the dead mother reference was thrown in.

They couldn't have made it clearer if they had given him the call name "Dead Meat".

HE, I agree 100% with you -- I do NOT want Palmer back in any leaderish capacity. My feelings were the same for Michelle and Tony.

This season took such a big risk in wiping out the cast of characters and having Jack rely on completely new people. But the people that were main characters before (Erin Driscoll, James Heller, Sarah, Behrooz etc.) are now MIA, and others (Curtis) are only playing minor roles, while Tony and Michelle are suddenly leading CTU again. It's exactly the same as last season, and I feel duped.

Palmer is welcome back as Jack's friend, but NOT as a politician.

yeah. Michelle i didn't mind as much, as she had moved up to Division and then came back. Tony I was happy to see back, but thought his taking command, however briefly, was entirely unbelievable and disappointing. he'd be better suited in a field/non-command role, somewhat rogue and unbounded by the rules. def. would like to see Curtis have a bigger role. and was very upset to have Dina offed, as i've said repeatedly, she was the most interesting character of the season

poor Edgar. loses his mother, becomes the hero by saving the rest of the power plants, and then the goat by not paying enough attention to the Anderson threat. wonder if there'll be any consequences for him.

The spoiler for the April 11th episode has been posted at 24 Insider, and guess which scumbag gets to come back now? Remember former White House chief of staff/Season 2 traitor Mike Novik? Well ... read the hidden text:

Episode 4.17
11:00 - 12:00 p.m.
Airdate - April 11th

In Air Force One, the pilot declares a state of emergency and he says that he is losing altitude and he is going down. He needs a flat spot to make an emergency landing and CTU instructs him to land at a nearby National Park. At CTU, Jack arrives and he and a field unit leave in a helicopter and head for the park. Meanwhile, Air Force One lands at the park and it’s a very rough landing. A couple who is camping comes across the wreckage and they are completely shocked. The man who is named Jason calls the police who then put him in touch with Jack.

Meanwhile, Marwan and his men close in on the crash site. We will soon learn that killing President Keeler wasn’t Marwan’s primary objective. “What we will do today will change the world” starts to make a little more sense now. Back at the park, Jason speaks with Jack who instructs Jason to find the nuclear football. The nuclear football is the device that is always near the President and it controls America’s nuclear weapons. Jason secures the case but he sees cars closing in on the crash site. Marwan is following the tracking device on the nuclear football and he sees it moving and he knows someone has it. Jack tells Jason to disable the tracking device on the front of the briefcase. Jason does and Jack tells Jason and Kelly to hide at a nearby power plant and to wait for Jack to arrive. Back at CTU, we learn that Anderson ejected from the stealth aircraft but his location is unknown.

In Washington D.C., at the White House, Vice President Logan is briefed on the missile strike and the crash landing. Mike Novik is Logan’s senior advisor. The subject of the 25th amendment is brought up and everyone agrees that it should be enacted. Vice President Logan learns that he will be sworn in as the President of the United States within the hour. At the crash site, the search and rescue units enter the wreckage. The pilot is still alive and President Keeler is injured but still very much alive. The President’s son is dead and most of the press pool members are unconscious.

Jason and Kelly arrive at the power plant and they try to hide from Marwan and his men. Marwan tracks them to the plant and Jason knows they will find him soon. Aboard the helicopter, Jack calls Audrey at CTU and Audrey gives Jack the combination to open the nuclear football. Jack relays the combination to Jason and he opens it. Jack tells Jason and Kelly to split up and he tells them to split the football in half so if one of them is caught the device will be useless because it requires both halves.

At the power plant, Marwan and his men find Jason. Marwan realizes that the device has been compromised and he tortures Jason. Marwan shoots him in the leg and his men beat him. Jason screams in agony. Kelly is watching Jason get tortured and she can’t take it any longer. Kelly turns herself into Marwan and they stop torturing Jason. Marwan now has both halves of the device and he is in control of America’s nuclear arsenal.

Jack arrives and he kills several of Marwan’s men. Jack comes across Jason and Kelly and he learns that Marwan has the nuclear football. Marwan and his men split up and take separate vehicles. A helicopter comes in and takes out one of Marwan’s Jeeps. Jack gets to the Jeep and the men are dead. Jack looks in the back and sees the nuclear football. Everything seems fine until Jack opens the case and realizes that Marwan has a section of the codes. At the White House, Vice President Logan is sworn in as President. Jack is put in contact with Mike Novik. Jack tells Mike that Marwan has a section of the nuclear codes. President Logan is informed of the situation. He is shocked realizing that a terrorist has a fraction of America's nuclear arsenal at his fingertips and he looks like he is about to faint.

Uh, the crash site team doesn't report its findings to the White House? About as believable as the rest of this season, I guess.

What the heck? How is Novik going to be Palmer's advisor and then the advisor to the Logan, of the other party? Seems to me that such a position is going to have to be a trusted person, and to be trusted you need to share the same beliefs. Even if Novik has NO beliefs, and is a political mercenary of sorts, how would anyone possibly trust him? Unless Logan is just a pawn in Novik's game, and it is he, not Logan, as I speculated above, that may have had something to do with the attack - perhaps in a way to get his man back on top...
