"24 Postponed for Strike"
TV Guide Online is reporting that Fox is postponing the next season of 24 until they can provide a full 24-hour season of the show without interruption. So 24 is not longer scheduled to kick off in January.

According to this http://www.thefutoncritic.com/guide.aspx?id=strike_scripted they've got 8-9 scripts/shows filmed at this time.

Problem is what if they start in January like they were going to but the strike lasts more than a couple of months.

They don't want to do a part season then finish it up later, so they sound like they will wait until the strike is over to start airing the ones they have done.

And yet I just got a radio commercial claiming the series premiere is Monday, including audio clips from the show.

I guess FOX forgot they paid for that one.

I read in the latest TV Guide that they've only got seven episodes filmed. I thought they'd have it all filmed by now.

5. "RE: 24 Postponed for Strike"
Most shows, from what they are saying during this strike, are only filmed 4-6 weeks in advance of when they expect the show to air.

They usually don't do the whole series before the first one airs, even with returning shows.

So, they're still writing a series after it starts airing? That could explain the glaring inconsistancies I've noticed on many series.
Season One of 24 seemed to have an inconsitancy regarding Nina Myers. For almost 23 hours, she's a loyal CTU agent. Then, hour 23 ends with her leaking the news of Palmer's survival in Serbian. And, the next hour, she's got some connection to Germany she doesn't want revealed.
So, what did Germany have to do with a Serbian "revenge" plot against Jack Bauer and David Palmer? The final episode seemed poorly written. And, inconsistant with the rest.

Yep that is what happens. Especially for a new series. Usually the studio orders like 6 episodes and sees how the first couple do then order either a few more episodes or the rest of the series.

Now I don't know if that was a problem with when the scripts were written or just a very poorly executed plot twist. Sometimes you do run into problems where they have written themselves into a corner and can't fix it easily as they needed set up earlier on in the season and that episode already aired.

Sometimes you get different writers for different episodes and that can cause problems. Sometimes they just aren't good enough to write a consistent story arc for that many episodes.

8. "RE: 24 Postponed for Strike"
Season 1 of 24 was a special case, even among shows with inconsistencies.

The original concept for the first day included a number of events, but the show was only "green-lighted" for 12 episodes. Considering the complexity of the show, the creators figured that those 12 episodes would be it -- the show would be dead by then. So they took basically every event in the concept and threw almost all of them in to the first 12 hours, figuring that they had enough left for a two-hour concluding movie, if the ratings were OK.

Imagine their surprise when the show was a hit and Fox picked it up for a full 24 episodes....

The writers were pretty much out of ideas. So they panicked. Thus, we had such weird events as Terri developing amnesia and Kim returning to her evil boyfriend's house and ending up in the middle of a drug deal. The Nina Myers twist developed because the producers didn't think that anything they were doing in these later episodes would have a high enough "buzz factor" to sustain the show's momentum. There was reason to suspect Tony but not Nina. Thus, Nina it was.

9. "Re-Writes"
I think the other problem that is encountered is that during production there are always re-writes that need to happen. It can be as simple as a one-line change. That cannot happen now. So...even if there were 24 scripts all ready to go there would undoubtedly be some 'tweaking' required before or during filming.

10. "RE: Re-Writes"
Right. For example, last year the original plot line on 24 called for Josh to be revealed as the son of Philip Bauer (who had raped his daughter-in-law). When the script line was leaked, the intense negative reaction that the plot line received led the writers to re-write the script and delete that revelation at the last minute (the rumor is that it was deleted in post-production).

Also, two scripts are written for at least some episodes: according to Louis Lombardi, who played Edgar Stiles. There were two scripts for the nerve gas attack on CTU. In one, he died. In the other, he didn't. And, we all know which script they used. Lombardi didn't want to leave the show. I didn't want him to leave, either. But, the producers didn't give us any choice.

At what point will they cancel the entire season and just wait for next year?

I tried to join the 24 insider, but they are not accepting new members. hmmmph.

15. "RE: Any News"
I read an article in Entertainment Weekly recently that said, depending on when the strike ends, they are flirting with the idea of running the first 12 hours in the fall and doing the second 12 hours in the spring with a different story. Nothing has been decided and they don't know if they want to change the premise of the 24 hours.

The other night on our FOX affiliate- they said even if they went into production right now- they would not be ready to start the season until November- so expect a January 2009 return
