"Ep 9 - Couture du Jour" |
Au revoir, Paris. After a whirlwind 2-day haute couture design challenge, we're back in NYC. Our designers had 2 days to create a haute couture gown, which is something only a select few (licensed by France a la Champagne) are allowed to do. Haute couture equals "handmade" details, including intricate beading, etc. Most of the designers understand what handmade/hand sticthing means, except for our delusional Vincent who has his handy glue bottle.Well, I agreed with the Judges on who deserved the boot, FINALLY. Jeffrey's boring, non couture monstrosity, glued together, earns him his Auf. Unfortunately, Vincent is confused and thinks he won, because his design was the best. I loved when they read the Paris Judge's comment: "Non, non, non, non, NON!!" My sentiments exactly. I also agreed with the Judges on the other bottom 2 . . . Laura and another one of her same-old designs. Boring, OLD, and so not haute couture. I was further surprised when she told her French model it was made of wool??? I don't know what she was thinking, especially when she joins Vincent in the delusional category as she thinks she is superior to all others. Just for Michael Kors, I have added the comparison . . . which do you think looks better?
Here's where the Judges and I start to differ. While I adore Michael, his dress was bad from start to finish. I give Michael an A for effort and an A+ for knowing his dress was poorly constructed and bad. The Judges were too kind to Michael and much to harsh on Kayne (but I'll get to that shortly). Tucking in the rabbit ears did wonders for the design. However, this gown was egged by the French!! Maybe there was a reason for that? (Just kidding. Actually, Vincent's gown deserved to be egged the most). I guess I have no taste, because I thought Kayne's dress WAS gorgeous and right in with the "haute couture" theme. The Judges claim it was too much and I disagree . . . I felt the intricate detail of the corset top (which I loved) was balanced out by the flowing, simplicity of the skirt. Kayne wavers the boundary of taste, but this gown was lovely. I think the Judges are stuck in their "Kayne, you are tacky white trash" rut and nothing he does now will get him out of it. Too bad for Kayne. Also, Kayne currently holds the number 2 spot in the "Rate the Runway," so I must not be the only one out there with no taste. Then there's Uli's design, which I also loved. I don't think there was as much detail as Kayne's (which was supposed to be the challenge), but it was nice to see Uli create something lovely as this and not use any wild prints. (In my ranking she would have been number 2, barely edged out by Kayne). I loved the color, fabric and overall design. Very beautiful, but I thought it was a tad too tame for "haute couture." Finally, there's love him or hate him Jeffrey. I'm surprised I didn't hate his design when I saw the garish fabrics he chose. When they showed the clip of Jeffrey stating "I want to be the first designer with immunity to win the challenge" I knew he was going to win. Project Runway is not good at throwing red herrings out to fool us. Usually about 10 minutes into the show you know who's going to win & who will be booted. Anyway, I actually liked Jeffrey's design. It was bright, colorful and fun. I would never wear it in a million years and it wasn't my fave (my third place, actually), but it was a nice departure from Jeffrey's darker, goth, rock designs, but yet still keeping with his personality. My final thoughts on the episode. I LOVED that Vincent is finally gone & Laura got the negative criticism she deserved, finally. I HATED that the Judges were so harsh on Kayne, because I really thought his gown was lovely. Kind Creation of ARNutz

I also really liked Kayne's dress. It's not something that I would wear, but I think it fit what they were supposed to do, and I definitely think it would appeal to many younger actresses, etc. I must be missing something that the judges saw, because I totally disliked Jeffrey's dress -- I just don't see someone going to pick that out for a special event. Uli's dress was pretty, but to me, all of her dresses are looking the same. She needs to branch out, and do some different necklines. Same with Laura. I really like Laura's sophisticated look of her designs, but she needs to pull out all the stops now -- this dress really did remind me of a maid's outfit. Michael's dress was much better with the scallops tucked in. For his first attempt at couture, I thought he did well, and I loved the color. Vincent, what can be said about that dress? I hated it, and I'm glad to see him auf'd. Did he learn nothing from the challenge of designing for Miss USA? The silhouette was the same, just a different ugly sleeve. Thank goodness, we don't have to hear him say "that gets me off" anymore. I'm hoping for a Michael, Kayne, Laura final 3. I'm sure that won't happen, but a girl can dream, right?

Kayne is toast. The comments (I agree, too harsh) about his dress and taste last night served to set the groundwork. Despite the "Laura is in trouble" editing for next week, I'm betting she stays and K. goes.I would like a Michael, Uli, Jeffrey final three. Right now my favorite is Jeffrey. Although he's a pill, he is the most original.
So, is Laura puffing out like Jiffy Pop, or do several weeks go by in between what we see?

I agree with most of what you said, Catty. I also loved Kayne's dress and thought it was the best of all of them. I don't get where the judges are coming from on that.Michael's dress was pretty awful, but he at least kept up with the spirit of the challenge and did a ton of hand stitching. It's amazing how much better the dress looked with those silly scallops tucked in. Can Laura make anything without a V down to the chestbone? Ugh. Uli has very similar dress designs, also, but she makes them beautiful with the fabrics she chooses. I love Uli. Jeffrey is such a tool, but his designs aren't horrible. I can see why he won this challenge because of the innovation of the fabric he chose. I don't think he should've won the last challenge though. And finally, on to Vincent. I think I can sum up my feelings in 3 words: Wooooooo Effing Hooooooooo! This guy should've been gone in week 2, and it boggles the mind that he lasted so long. He is truly delusional and I hope to never see him again. He does not get me off. *shudder* A Tribe work of art

Kaynes' dress did look beautiful on TV, especially on the model in France, she seemed to move within the gown, and I could not see the overdone qualities the judges were talking about. Again I thought Jeffrey' dress was the best and I loved the color. Michaels' dress did not get hit with eggs in the areas the judges were commenting on, sorry Michael. It was nice to see Laura in the hot seat, not really sure why I enjoyed this so much. My top three pick is the same still: Michael, Uli and Jeffrey.

Thank you Ms. Chat for the pics. This was a very difficult challenge. Even hand-sewing a few of the elements in such a short period of time is very difficult. I am so glad Vincent got Auf'd so he can no longer get off.I agree with most here about Kayne's dress. I really liked it. I thought the beading might be a bit OTT, but the brown velvet ribbon, overall silhouette and flowing chiffon was gorgeous! Seeing the boning in the corsette wasn't distracting to me. Laura's dress was awful and previews for next week show her making a similar garment in that black lace that we see her wear. She really needs to branch out and get colorful and creative. I wonder if Keith left behind any books that she might have a peek at. I loved Jeffery's dress. I'm a child (meaning HS grad of 85) of the 80s and I remember seeing in Vogue a dress with a similar yellow plaid top (w/ high collar neckline and sleeves) and black skirt. I thought Jeffery's dress was young, fun and sexy. You gotta be confident to wear this one! Uli's dress was very pretty and very Uli. She's a one-note (like Laura), but her note is very feminine and flattering. I suspect she'll be in the F3 and her whole collection will have braiding, deep V necks (though not as deep as Laura's) and Empire waists. Michael's dress was an experiment and I don't fault him for it. The little bunny ears were a mistake, but the rest of the dress was lovely. It was a good shot at drive-thru couture. Vincent's dress was a sheath with a gaping neckline. Sheaths are all he knows how to do (recycled dress, Uli's mom dress), and unfortunately he doesn't do them that well. He's just a gross little dude and I'm glad he's gone.

Looks like most of us agree that Kayne's dress was something we really liked. I was really surpised that Tim and the judges were so critical of it. And Laura's comment about him having his 'head on a platter' really threw me off. But she is always throwing me off!I'm so sick of Laura I could throw up! I can close my eyes and visualize every single week what she's going to do-THAT is how boring she is! Just look at her, and you can see what she'll design-what she is wearing is what she designs. Low, V-necked, to the belly-button. UGH! Sick, sick, sick of her! And her arrogant attitude! I'll take Michael and Jeffrey over them all. Even though I love Kayne's personality the most. He's going to have to really step it up and prove himself. He's the dark horse right now. I don't understand why the judges are not seeing that Laura is boring as heck........ And Uli-yes, she has a way with colors, but that's about it. Everything else is pretty straight-forward. Except for the color, the gown she made this week, was pretty much a replica of what she wore to Paris. WHATEVER! Like a few of you said-must be different in the translation once it goes from the judges, who actually SEE the garment to US, who have to take their words for it.

I wonder why the models didn't get to go to Paris. This is a competition for them as well, and they certainly could have done some networking or site seeing in Paris. Just a thought...

The models didn't get to go to Paris, because models are a dime a dozen. You'll note nearly everyone said the Parisian models were thinner and more elegant than their American counterparts.

Ah, Vincent!Did anybody besides me notice how he tried to kiss up to Catherine Malandrino and his flattery seemed to creep her out? She couldn't wait to get away from him and his hideous dress. And when Tim asked what parts of his dress he'd sewn by hand, Vincent simply forgot to answer the question. YET he went around giving his critiques of what everybody else was doing. I hope he has some of that 401K left -- he's not getting a job in the fashion industry any time soon.

Laura should have lost. What was she thinking? All her dresses seem to run the same thing challenge after challenge. Although, it looks like she's the next to be booted based on the previews. I have to agree with a previous poster that this show really isn't good at red herrings.Vincent was close to be booted, but he got booted anyway, so I'm ok with it. I really didn't care for his dresses. I just thought it was a bit creepy to be getting off on his dresses. That's just sick man. Uli should have won. Had it been "out there" like Jeffrey, she could have won - who knows. What was Jeffrey thinking? The plaid was just non non non...lol. Michael didn't deserve to win this challenge. It was ok, but the top of that dress did look better when cuffed in. I have to agree the critics were harsh on Kayne. I actually did like his dress this time around. It was a tad bit too much, but it was much better than the wannabee pop star Elvis outfit in the previous challenge. LOL! I'm thinking my Top 3 will be Uli, Michael, & Jeffrey with Kayne running close behind, although I'm not confident Kayne will get the hint already. An arkiegrl siggie

Oh, what a great recap Catty! I just thought I'd add my two cents. LOL This? Is a couch with bad/old pillows. Don't you hate it when your pillows get to the point where they have stuff hanging off the sides, and a big rip down the front?
This? Is a clown suit gone horribly, horribly wrong. Think Elvira, Cown Mistress of the Night. This? Was a good attempt, but I don't really understand why anyone would cover old sheriff badges and try to pass them off as breast plates. This? Wasn't so bad. I liked the detail, the way the skirt moved, and the color. BUT, what was with the weird lacing in the back? The laces were too wide, and the thing crossed her back! On the other hand, Ra said he'd love trying to navigate me out of this dress. LOL This? Flows well, is a great color, and should have been the winner. Bunny would wear this dress. This? Is a tablecloth. It's not even a NICE tablecloth. It's a tablecloth that would be great for a dieter, since looking at all that yellow and red would make you to sick to eat. And, I'm looking at this picture, and thinking that the drape, ribbons, and ruffle at the waist makes this poor anorexic model look like a rectangle with no curves at all. (which if you remember, the judges all panned that cute little blonde designer for!)
