"Another piece of the puzzle: Designing for the "everyday" woman"
OK, I will admit I, too, was floored when the challenge was revealed to design for the "everyday" woman, and that these everyday women would be the mothers and other female family members of the designers. It was funny to watch the hitherto smug facades crumble when confronted with women's shapes that were not size 2 or zero, and who were about five-five (or less) in height. Real women have breasts, hips, short fat thighs. At least Vincent did acknowledge that as designers they all ought to be able to design flattering outfits for larger women -- presumably this is a large (no pun intended)segment of the clothes-buying public.

Now for the stand-out messes:

Poor Robert! Was there ever a designer who has talent, but who is so clearly out of his depth? Nearly all his outfits have bombed for lack of originality or practicality. Watching Robert's outfits on the runway was like taking a huge horse pill of Sominex. When designing for a larger, older woman, Robert also foundered -- and it was no surprise. I don't know about you all, but I think red and black is a horrid color combination. In all, a sweet man, but he'd better stick to designing for a certain 11-inch tall woman who will remain nameless.

Clearly, Jeffrey is standing out as the bully of this season. Like most bullies, Jeffrey doesn't have any reason for his nastiness other than the fact that others let him get away with it. Turns out meeting his mother provides another piece of the puzzle why Jeffrey is so critical of others: JEFFREY DOESN'T LIKE HIMSELF! His mother confided that her son had had a drug and alcohol problem and had almost been living on the streets. Such a horrendous set of experiences and complications have left indelible emotional scars that seem to manifest themselves in Jeffrey's boorish behavior.

Even so, I could not believe how cruel he was to Angela's poor mother. The woman was in tears. I'm surprised she didn't walk off the show at being humiliated by that tattooed clown. I admit I like Angela even more seeing how gentle and forgiving her mother is.

Was I the only one who was surprised to discover VINCENT finally won a challenge? I hated his dress; that gigantic flared collar kept distracting me.

In all, a curious episode. The challenge and the resulting outfits took a clear back seat to the fact of learning more about the designers themselves.

And am I alone in learning that Ms. Laura is expecting baby number SIX?! No wonder she's so flat chested; birthing all those babies probably wore her breasts down to nubs.

That she has 5 kids already was brought up in the intros and preshow designer press stuff.

I can't imagine finding out I was pregnant during a reality show. That has to be a shock (did she bring a pregnancy test, did they producers go get her one, or do they have down time to go get one).

Although I will give her credit for staying in pretty good shape (even if flat) for having 5 kids. It can be hard bouncing back after a pregnancy, and a lot of woman do not have the energy it takes to keep in shape when they have that many kids.

ETA: I just hated Vincent's dress but mostly on a taste level not on a it was that horrid level like some of his stuff. I found it funny that both Angela and her Mom seem to have issues with controlling men, it made some of Angela's issues with Vincent make more sense to me.

I lvoed seeing the Mom's and sisters and watching the designers freak over having normal woman to dress. Great challange!!!

Sorry-have to disagree about the whole 'Jeffrey and Angela's mom' disagreement. I think Angela's mom is a big (pardon the pun there) cry-baby (like mother/like daughter), who was looking for something to be upset about. You know-makes baby girl look SO much better if you can make her arch nemesis look bad, right??

OK, so she didn't care for the dress-it WAS hideous! But if she would have let him do what he wanted to do in the first place, I think it would have complimented her and she may have just liked it, in spite of herself. The result ended up being a cross between a clown suit and something you'd wear to a toga party! What was he thinking???

Sad to see Robert go. If the show were based on good guy personalities, he'd be there to the end. But sadly, when he left Barbie to come on the show, he had some separation anxieties that he couldn't overcome.

At this point, I'm rooting for Uli, Michael and Jeffrey. Jeffrey, only because he's become the underdog that everyone loves to hate, and I think there's a heck of a lot more in that tatoo'd body than most people know. Give him a chance to shine and he won't easily be forgotten-just MY 2 cents.

Disagree with what? I was saying the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree, or I thought I was.

The dynamics between Mom and Jeffrey were very much like the dynamics between Angela and Vincent and now I know where that came from. Didn't say anything about who was wrong or right, just about the dynamics of the two sets of interactions.

Now I do disagree that one should just lie back and let a designer do what they do without daring to have an opinion about it. You do need to be open-minded, but being honest to Tim about what you like and do not like as a client was IMO part of the challange. Just standing there fawning over how much you love the design regardless of true feelings wouldn't be right IMO.

You only get so far if you won't make clothes people want to buy and wear. Now there does need to be open-mindedness on both sides of the equation (client willing to try something new as well as designer listening to what the client wants). Thinking back to Kayne's Miss USA dress. It wasn't exactly what the client said she wanted, but it wasn't so far from what she said worked on her that she would dismiss it out of hand. Now the dress was simply fugly all around and I think Jeffrey was not that interested in doing well on that challange because of his personal issues with Angela. A common thing, but not always the way to get ahead or win competitions.

First of all, I have to actually *cringe* side with Jeffrey this week. I think Angela's mother was way too sensitive about the thing and crying was a bit much. Yes, Jeffrey could have used more tact, but I don't think what he did/said merited a brreakdown. Jeffrey is the D.E.S.I.G.N.E.R. and I think the mothers & sisters should have described to the designer what they normally wear and what colors they like and then leave it up to the designer to do their thing. I agreed with Jeffrey when he told Angela's mom that maybe there are things that others think she would look beautiful in, but she doesn't realize it. He could have said it better, but he's a man and most men don't know how to handle with kid gloves. It's a shame that the outfit turned out to be as big a wreck as the pairing, but I'm glad Jeffrey wasn't booted because of it.

Secondly, WTF, Judges?? You choose Vincent's design as the winner? I thought it was one of the most hideous things up there. I just don't get it with these judges. I don't think there was one thing I liked about it and I thought it was as unflattering as Laura's atrocity.

I thought the best designs were Uli's by a mile, then Michael's and then Kayne's. I wasn't too fond of the pants on Kayne's design, but I thought the top was very nice for a larger woman.

The bottom 3 should have been -- Vincent, Laura & Jeffrey. Robert's was bland, but at least it wasn't hideous.

I thought this episode was crappy. Only Uli, really, made something decent looking. It was very disappointing that those were the best the designers could come up with. Even Michael was underwhelming, and Kayne really flubbed up (as did Laura).

Jeffrey was a total jerk, however. He was super rude, antagonized Angela's mother and when called on it by everyone, never even tried to make peace. He could have designed whatever he wanted if he had just been a little friendly to the poor lady.

Sad as I am to see Robert go, he and Jeffrey had the two worst designs. (I would say Vincent had the third worst, so I am surprised to see him win). Robert was the most likable contestant, fwiw--which is nada.

Robert had to be cast out this week because he continued to completely ignore the advice he received from the judges in previous weeks.

*relieved to not be the only one who found Angela's mom even more annoying than Mean Ole Jeffrey*

And I hated Vincent's winning dress, too. But what do I know?

ETA, from Tim's blog:
"Vincent wins (note absence of exclamation point). Let’s begin with his model, Heidi (Uli’s mom). She could be a model; Heidi’s tall, gorgeous, and has a great figure. So Vincent was not even remotely challenged by the prospect of working with a new size, shape, or set of proportions. Therefore, his only challenge was design … and what was that? From my point of view, he made a simple sheath and adorned it with an oversized pilgrim-collar, and a collar that merely stood out on the front of the dress and didn’t even exist on the back. Huh? I didn’t get it and it certainly wasn’t my taste. But it suited the judges’ taste and that’s what matters. Congratulations Vincent, whatever you are."

8. "RE: Another piece of the puzzle: Designing for the "everyday" woman"
I have not been following this season, but my son wasn't feeling well yesterday, so we both stayed home and I got to see about four episodes in a row, including this one.

I liked the challenge. Most women are not sticks or Barbie-figures. We have curves and areas of our bodies that need some glossing over.

Jeffrey - he is abrasive. I think too abrasive to be successful as a designer of his own line. Clients can be difficult to deal with, and part of being successful is knowing how to do a little hand-holding, and how to present an idea to your client so well that they think it was their own. Angela's mom was a whiny crybaby, but Jeffrey could have made the attempt to turn it around before it became a complete train wreck. The dress was hideous!

Angela's dress - what was with the flapper fringe? God, that dress was nearly as ugly as Jeffrey's.

Kayne's outfit - I didn't dislike it as much as the judges. I wasn't crazy about the pants, but I thought the top was cute. Agree that a little more skin could have been showing.

My favorites were Uli's and Michael's -- and they are also my two favorite contestants. Both seem very grounded, and both are able to incorporate their own personality into every design, while doing their best to meet the criteria of the challenge. (In addition to that, he obviously thought the drama by Jeffrey in the sewing room was stupid, told him so without getting heated or wrapped up in the drama, and then called his mom to get re-focused again - really love this guy!)

The sheer printed fabric of Uli's top was lovely, and the flow and drape was wonderful to see. The only thing I didn't care for on Michael's dress was the belt. I would have preferred if the dress had simply fastened at the side of the waist. I also would have liked to see what the other (reverse) side looked like.

Did anyone else notice that Jeffrey was in tears after Robert got sent off.

I think that Angela doesn't fall far from the tree - she is an unhappy women and will find ways to be unhappy with things regardless of what others do.

Jeffrey was an a55, but I think that Angela's mother (and Angela) would have been unhappy regardless the outcome and because Jeffrey has had dealings with the daughter, he probably felt that dealing with the mother would have been the same impossible situation, which put him on the defensive right away.

I didn't like Vincent's design either, but apparently the judges saw something else.

I hope that flat-chested what's her name told her husband about the expectation of child #6 as soon as possible after telling her mother and everyone else on the show. I don't like her clothing most of the time.

I did like Uli's design, but even large women can look good without having extra cloth applied to their wardrobe.

Jeffrey's outfit was almost hideous and I'm glad he's gone. He was a great guy, but out of his league in my opinion for the show. I would wear anything Jeffrey designed over something that Angela, Jeffrey, Vincent, or the flat chested lady designed.

Good challenge! Rather than family, they should have brought in actual plus size models so that all the designers were on an equal playing field - some of those women's body were not a challenge at all.

Just my two cents.

jeffrey made his client cry which should be grounds for kicking him off no matter what his outfit looked like. designers work for clients, not the other way around. if she was a real client, she would have fired him.

jeffrey was kept on because, hey, this is tv, folks - the tension between jeffrey & angela is (besides the "who-will-win-this-challenge") the only tension on the show. all the other designers get along very well. if jeffrey was kicked off, think how blah the show would be...

Totally agree Bigtip. If she had been a celebrity client there is no way he would have gotten away with treating her that way.

I thought his behavior was over the line. I don't blame Angela's mother for being hurt. He spoke really harshly to her. Buying clothes can be very stressful for a plussized woman and Jeffrey made the situation absolutely miserable for this woman.

The issuses that Jeffrey has with Angela have nothing to do with her mother. I doubt that Angela's mom even knew that Jeffrey was her daughter's nemisis. Tim asked the woman's opinion and she gave it. Her comments didn't seem vicious or self-serving that's just the way Jeffrey chose to take it. He was wrong. And I don't blame her for crying about it. She seemed like a really sweet lady.

YES! Not exactly in Jeffrey's camp, but I feel that Angela's mom should've given him a heads up instead of being so wishy-washy. "I didn't say anything because I didn't want to hurt his feelings..." sort of stuff. He's got a lot on the line! I'm NOT applauding Jeffrey's behavior - hope there was some editing where jeffrey was trying to reason with her, eek -

****warning, harmless storm a-brewin****

but I also hope that Angela's mom was not "trying to set him up" - she may have been emotional (who could blame her), but she could've also unknowingly "set him up" - let's face it, the subconscious can be a very powerful thing, and Angela's mom seems like a very nice person, but when it comes down to it, who WOULDN'T want their own daughter to win?

And if the producers KNEW about Angela's mom feelings, and told her to hold back until the "right" time for the sake of pure drama....the world may never know.

Have logged in lots of reality tv hours - but this episode seemed PARTICULARLY more "reality" than most. Uli's design was fabulous! Kayne's mom glided down the runway in a beautiful piece!

Vincent's, though certainly a departure from what was previously done (i.e. atrocious), was still somewhat "Vincent-esque" - it showed skin in all the right places, but the back vs. front comparison? It's like two different outfits - did anyone else find this a little too extreme?

Sorry, I smell Conspiracy Theory - ESPECIALLY with Jeffrey having to "pick" (i.e. be left with) Angela's mom. It's a guaranteed deathmatch!

They could've put some identifying marker (double-sided tape, etc) on Jeffrey's chip, for all we know..if no one wanted to work with Angela's mom, that's one thing....but to have your arch-nemesis' mom out of default? WAY too convenient, folks....

Tim Gunn, you, me, and almost everyone else agreed that Vincent did not deserve to win this week. I think I solved the mystery of how Vincent managed to win. There were three judges. One judge was Michael Kors and a second judge was the mother of Michael Kors. The mother of Michael Kors was as lacking in qualifications in judging as Ray Charles, and Ray Charles has the twin handicaps of being blind and being dead. For some reason the mother of Michael Kors liked Vincent's design and she, of course, infuenced her son, producing two out of three votes for Vincent's design.

Am I the only one that thinks the producers of the show wanted a confrontation between a mom and a designer like Jeffrey's and Angela's mom.

Lets face it, every mom/sister in the show does not want their designer to win the competition. They want their child/sibling to be the winner. Therefore, it should not be unexpected that a mom/sibling would make things difficult for the designer that they were working with. If their designer does well, their relative is worse off. That does not lead to good colaborative efforts.

I think it would have been better to ask a designer to work with there own relative. In that case, at least we would know that the relative was not trying to make things hard for their designer just to help out there relative

I agree with 2 points here: Either have all the designers work with plus-size models, OR have them all work with their own family members. The judges did sound like they were being objective about the size of the models and looking at the designs ON the models, however this was not a level playing field at all.

How unfair for them to ask Angela how she felt about Jeffrey's design for her mother. Of course she was going to say it was horrible after they way he treated her mother (and it was), but also because she's his competitor. It was like they were granting her retribution or something!

We don't see everything and Jeffrey may have made that attempt and it was not shown. And how much was Angela's mom predisposed to not like Jeffrey. We know from an earlier show that the designers can talk to their parents or whatever - Michael called his mom. And Jeffrey doesn't like Angela, so he is predisposed not to like her mother.

That's why I think this challange should have been plus sized models rather than family members. That was the drama that I'm sure the producers were going for, but it takes away from their design ability to have that emotional attachment - it wasn't a fair challange in my opinion.

I don't particularly care of Jeffrey at this point, but we don't see everything that happens. I like Angela and Vincent much less - in my opinion, they are the villians of this season just as much as Jeffrey is.

My two cents

15. "RE: Another piece of the puzzle: Designing for the "everyday" woman"
I have to disagree with the idea of working with plus sized models, simply because the challange was to design for the "everyday woman." We come in all shapes and sizes, and the idea was to create a piece a "real" woman would wear. In other words, the idea was not so much to dwell on the size of the woman, (although that does enter into it) but to take into consideration her lifestyle, personality, career AND size.

Having the family members there was simply a "hitch" the producers put in because it would most likely create tension between designers. This is after all, entertainment.

I didn't like the winning design either. I didn't hate it, but as someone else said, I think the collar was a major distraction. I found myself looking at the collar more than the dress, and rather than admire the dress, I kept wondering when that collar was going to fly off the dress and out the nearest window to join the rest of the birds. LOL

Agreed, completely. I thought Angela and her mom made themselves look badly in their effort to say as many bad things about Jeffreys dress as possible in front of the judges. I really like Jeffery as a designer. He did try to say to Angelas mom that maybe somebody can see something beautiful in you that you don't see for your self. Something like that. I think he wasn't getting over the fact that she was talking to Tim in a negative way while he wasn't there= instant enemy. I thought he really could not find the right shade of green to go with whatever purple fabric he found in the store. Who really cares if she never wears light blue. No flexability there. So sorry to see her cry though. Hope Jeffrey can just zip it and win some. To me, he has real talent.

The reason why it would have been a bad idea to have a designer work with their own relative is because some or all of these designers probably already designed clothing for their relatives. The designers would then be reproducing something that they did before instead of designing something original based on suggestions from a client that they just recently met.

I was really disappointed with the designers in this challenge. I'm a plus size woman, so I was excited when I saw who the models were. But, wouldn't you know, every single designer who had a plus size model either did a straight sheath dress or a long flowy top over pants/capris. Jeebus. Now, granted, I have no idea what the mothers/sisters requested from their designers. But most plus size women still have figures! I was really sad to see that there wasn't anything fitted, except on the skinnier models. I wear fitted clothes all the time. I get that proportions are different for the larger models, but a good designer should have been able to handle it. Argh.

Having said all that, Uli did have a nice design, even if I wouldn't choose such a flowy top for myself. I was happy to see her incorporate a print and a nice bright color (really tired of plus women in head to toe black.) I also thought Kayne's capri pants were cute, even though most of you seem to dislike them. I liked them a lot though, because they had a nice tailored look and they fit well! I have trouble finding capri pants that don't make me look short and dumpy (which is pretty hard to do since I'm 5'8.) Michael had another awesome design although I would have also liked to see it reversed. I didn't think Vincent's design was horrible, but I did disagree with the judges about the fit. Maybe it was just his model, but it looked too big throughout the waist area. I thought it needed to be more fitted.

Word. Ditto everything that Luna said.

And adding...

I know editing can make one person look like the victim, and the other the bad guy. But I still can't help but be swayed by it. For cripes sake! All the woman (Angela's mother) said was that she didn't like the color! And Jeffrey went off on her for badmouthing him! And made her cry! Holy crap, man. Get a grip. You were supposed to be designing for her. She's not allowed to have an opinion?! Maybe he's used to models who just wear the clothes and don't question, but this challenge was different. It was supposed to be about designing an outfit for the everyday woman, not some model. Grrrr. Good luck designing for clients in the future, because you obviously don't give two sh!ts about what they think. And your designs suck for the most part anyhow. Yes, Robert's dress was horrible and boring, but I wish Jeffrey would've gone instead of him. Ugh.

I think that if Angela's mom let Jeffrey know her thoughts BEFORE getting so far along the design process, Jeffrey might've not been SO volatile. He said it himself that there was a limited selection of dark green at the fabric store - SO he says, as he revealed later to Tim that dark purple and green didn't look good together -

But as far as fabric went, there was nothing Jeffrey could do - and we all know that in a competition like this, there is no room for "error"...

And he couldn't do anything to fix it - picking the "wrong" colored fabric - who knew? He doesn't seem to work well under bone-breaking, almost life-threatening pressure

And no matter what Angela's mom's intentions were, he DEFINITELY could've been a little nicer. If someone talked to my mom like that on primetime *grr*

I wondered, too, why the producers or someone didn't intervene when Jeffrey was plainly verbally abusing a woman he'd never seen before. But no one is there to be anyone's babysitter; the assumption is they are a group of rational adults and nobody needs a minder.

I'm starting to think Jeffrey is getting frustrated with the show because he has not won a challenge. He knew he didn't stand a hope in hell of winning the plus-sized design challenge. His style of design and use of color is for a very narrow market.

In a larger sense, though, this challenge echoes how biased the fashion industry may be towards larger women. Even when something is made from scratch only for them, those poor women wound up swathed in voluminous black (which does not make you look thinner) or in something that resembles a muu-muu.

On the subject of Jeffrey crying when Robert left. I watched the show again yesterday (it aires quite a few times here during the week), and I actually heard in Tim's voice some cracking and some tearing up, as well.

So, we see that these people really DO get close to eachother-for the most part. At least the ones who are decent and treat eachother decently.

It seems to ME-just MY opinion-that Angela and Katherine are the big trouble makers. And as far as I'm concerned, neither of them are that great as designers, either.

Yes, Jeffrey is rather crodgedy, but give him a break! He's come very far from where he was, and he DOES have a great deal of talent. Evidentally everyone but Angela and Katherine like him, so he must not be THAT bad to work with!

Anyway, just a few words about not much of anything at all, except to say, yes, a lot of what happens, just like on every other reality show, is about the drama that certain people exude. Whether they are talented or not, whether they are Trump material, Survivor material, whatever-they are kept around for ratings-we all know that by now! Poor Robert-he didn't have a chance! Now, every time I see a Barbie doll, I'll think of him and his bland designs! LOL

I disagree, Misty. Jeffrey is a BULLY. It's not a matter that the others "like" him, Jeffrey knows they wouldn't stand for verbal abuse -- Laura thinks nothing of telling him exactly what she thinks. Like any bully, Jeffrey has singled out the weakest personality (Angela) and it's open season.

As for his coming "very far from where he was" so what? Is he supposed to get a medal? People are dealing with their personal issues every day, every minute, every year -- and it doesn't make them feel entitled to run roughshod over the feelings of others.

The more you all defend him -- I cannot stand bullies -- the more I will be glad to see the back of Jeffrey!!

I agree, it would have been better to see them have plus size models. The woman didn't seem all that comfortable walking down the runway and barely smiled, which doesn't exactly help the vibe. Clearly, I don't blame the woman, after all it was probably the first time doing such a thing and on t.v.

I really loved Vincent's attitude about the whole challenge. I so agreed with what he said about the designers needing to make clothing for every body type.

As for the Jeffery and Angela's mom situation...well, I didn't have an issue with Angela's mom being honest with Tim, but I also thought she was very close-minded about what she would wear. Jeffery is the designer, so he knows more about what may be more appealing to her look and she didn't want to hand over some of the control to him, which makes it hard. However, he could have used a better tone with her because that would be the professional way to go about it.

I didn't have much of an issue with Robert going, as nice as he was, because he completely bombed. The outfit wasn't ugly or poorly made, in my opinion, but one could walk into almost any store that sells clothing and find the exact same thing on the hangers. The point is to come up with their own designs and he simply didn't do that.

I really thought Uli would have won. I loved that she made something that flattered her "model" as well as making something that showed herself as a designer. I really thought she should have won it.

I thought this was a great challenge. After all, challenges are supposed to be CHALLENGING! This one reflected a real-life situation in that "luck-of-the-draw" was a factor. Those who had to design for large women had a real opportunity to WOW the judges. Conversely, Laura and Michael each had normal sized models (note I say NORMAL not professional size 5 mannequins who are 6 feet tall), and yet their designs were as banal and uninspired as possible without being outright ugly. You can find better off the rack at Penney's or Sears.

Michael's dress was an utter disappointment after his two wins. Laura's design was obviously influenced by her disaste for Jeffrey.

The garments designed by Jeffrey and Robert for the two largest ladies looked like the worst results of a "Home Sew Your Own Wardrobe 101" class. I mean, what is so difficult about making a nice, custom lifestyle garment for a regular gal, large or not? There was no restriction on materials. These designers made it to the show, they should be able to pull off this fairly easy, in my mind, challenge. Again, better-looking clothes off the rack can be found at Penneys,Lane Bryant, even Wal-Mart. And there were no accessories for these two women.

I am apparently the only one who liked Vincent's dress. I thought it was clever and he finally listened to the judges. Ulli should have won.

I thought Michael's design was the best, but Kayne did the best job listening to what Michael's mother wanted. Everything else was either ehhh looking or awful. This episode was also good because of all the drama. LOL. So funny.

how does one design clothes when he doesnt have the tast to gt rid of that creepy tattoo on his neck? looks like he thinks it will hid the fact he has no chin.

if he treats customers the way he did angelas mom, who will buy his damn clothes. he cannot get over angla beating him with the macy's window outfit no class.

Roberts' design added 50 lbs. to his model while being too usual. I adored Robert and believe he can do great things but his time on PR just didn't work out.
