"LA and house scenery on the show"
Does anyone else get as tired as I do of the never ending shots of the LA freeways, the gardens of the house, kids skateboarding .....? It irks me that when they are already showing only a few moments out of each day that they choose to show nonsense footage repeatedly EVERY single show.

Not at all. I love the cutaways. They give a sense of place and mood to the show. I disliked the early scenes of last year's show because the scenes were so housebound and claustrophic-feeling. In the first season, the cutaways of Chicago were always great. The cutaways add to the atmosphere for me.

I think they had to add them in because they couldn't get as many advertisements as they wanted.

summerwatcher: I could have written this. In fact, I had just told my girlfriend the very same thing. Sometimes we discuss our favorite cutaways. During SO1, I had great fun looking for the woman in the trench coat. During SO2...well...hmm...there wasn't much fun to be had in viewing that season. Now, the atmospherics are back, both in location and cutaways. We now know one thing for sure: spiders have spun webs in all three places.

Wow. That's so great BT. My girlfriend and I do the same thing. We discuss our favorite cutaways from the Chicago broadcast, too. We both think last year's show was almost forgettable except for the spiders. At the rate they are going, this season will probably not prove to be very memorable either. Although, I love watching Jill's progress.

Actually, summerwatcher, it is because of my girlfriend that I am still watching SO. She is an acute observer; her insights are extraordinary. Anyway, I think that the creatures in the cutaways are making much more progress than the women in the SOH. The spiders complete their webs, the birds take flight, and the squirrels scale new heights. The women, however, seem to be taking root in the house. Lisa has returned to her old room after a punitive time-out, while Allison has already graduated last season. Jessica is now inviting her father for a visit, and Christina may be there long enough to give birth to another child. Only Jill and TJ seem to be edging their way towards, and out, the door.

Another baby in the house? Oh goodie! I guess Allison will still be there to deliver it. She can be Nanny. My girlfriend and I try to watch the show together as often as we can. If it were not for her, I would have stopped watching last season. She and I see the show now as more entertainment and comic relief than anything to do with self-improvement. Without her wit, I don't think I could stay interested. Your insights are interesting too. Your sense of humor reminds me a little of hers.

Since Allison has long since graduated, but still remains in the SOH, she could easily play Nanny. If Christina is not actually pregnant, Allison could still stay to serve sandwiches, make beds, and report on the progress of each house guest. After all, it must be difficult for the women with timed assignments to tend to every task while the other women just sit about. I may have even seen one of those spiders spinning cobwebs around Christina. She seldom has an assignment.

You and I seem to be having great fun discussing this show with our girlfriends. By the way, I enjoy your sense of humor. I will be watching for future posts: I think we are seeing the show in the same way.

You are right it is so much more fun to watch the show when you have someone to watch it with. Although, my girlfriend and I tried to watch the show together today, and it was so boring and predictable (with Allison taking up most of the hour and Jessica doing her usual sloppy crying) that we just talked to each other and joked about the show and missed most of it. Hurricane relief for Allison? How will that help her to avoid getting into debt? What will viewers learn about financial management from her trip? Who's running this show? What is Christina's raison d'etre? Will Jessica ever reconcile with her father? Will she learn to accept her stepmother? I thought Jill had already made a "Life Plan." When will TJ be back? What has she been doing all of this time? Lisa???? Stay tuned for answers to all of these questions As The SOH Turns.

Hahaha! Omg, that is so funny: "As the SOH Turns!" Hehehe. My girlfriend and I had the identical experience watching the show that you had. If so much time has been spent teaching Lisa to form a business, and she is not in dire need of funds, then why wouldn't they allow Lisa to do some tv token relief work? That way Allison, who admits to being without money, could take Lisa's place and get a job. Or maybe the LCs could begin to pay Allison for all of her housekeeping habits.

I do not know "Christina's raison d'etre." Perhaps she is being trained to hunt for treasure, since she did so well finding papers hidden under rocks. The treasures that she had sought heretofore were hidden under covers, but according to her account, they were certainly not treasures.

Jill did have a life plan, but now she must dispel dross into the universe. TJ is no fool: she is hiding from Christina.

I love your comments, summerwatcher. I do not think that I am normally this cynical, but this show incites cynicism. You make me laugh.

The show not only incites cynicism; it invites it. You are right about the assignments. I think the LCs are reading the scripts wrong. Maybe the pages are incorrectly numbered. Christina should have gotten Jill's assignment to seek spiritual enlightenment. Jill should have been given an oppotunity to do PR for the Magic Johnson Foundation. Allison should have gotten Lisa's opportunity to start a new business. Lisa should be given the assignment to work with hurricane victims. Jessica should have already graduated, and TJ should have been reparented and given plenty of hugs while sitting on Iyanla's lap,

Haha! You may actually be right, summerwatcher. That would explain more than just the mismatched assignments. It would also explain why the LCs have requested one form of behavior, only to criticize that same behavior when it was enacted. I can imagine that after one of those occasions, when a house guest was reprimanded for doing what they were told, Rhonda and Iyanla looked back at the script, blanched, and said: "Oops We were supposed to reprimand so-and-so BEFORE this, not after!"

I don't mind the scenery shots-but I wish they would use NEW shots-not the same old ones. I'm getting sick of seeing that same shot of the deer in the garden.

YES!!!! I tape the show, and when I go to watch it I zoom right through those opening shots too. They're completely pointless and quite annoying.

The thing I like when I am recording the show is that those opening shots give you the reaction time to hit play when zooming through a commercial break without missing anything important!

I have FINALLY seen part of an episode of this show! And I have to agree with Justlet: I understand the purpose of these establishing shots, but when they are thrown together in such a slapdash way, they are annoying to me!

Then again, I was treated to similar production values when watching The Scholar, also from the minds of BMP.

LAST EDITED ON 12-06-05 AT 02:40 PM (EST)

Well, I kind of like it, since its my "hood." I live about less than a half a mile from this year's SO house. (Their neighborhood is posh -- mine, not so much )

But their all just transitional shots, and many of them were shot last year, when the house was in the Hollywood Hills.

amen to that one I really get bored of how between commercials and beginning and ending is so much scenery. There is probably about 30 minutes of real show and the rest is scenery and commercials.
