"Creative/Matchstick vs. Corporate/Primarius-Would you have divided the teams this way and do you already like Primarius better?"

"Creative/Matchstick vs. Corporate/Primarius-Would you have divided the teams this way and do you already like Primarius better?" |
I know Martha said that the teams should find a "common theme" a la men vs. women or booksmarts vs. streetsmarts but I would think that the teams themselves would want to be more balanced. A company isn't all creative talent or all business sense- it incorporates both. So I was very surprised that the teams didn't choose to have half creative/half corporate on each. It seems that way, no matter what the task, there would be people who could excel on both teams and the different personalities could play off each other. I was also surprised at the people on the two teams. If I didn't know which team was which, I would have thought that the people on Primarius were the creative ones. They seemed so much nicer as a group. They countered the stereotype of a corporate personality. They also seem to have watched earlier editions of Apprentice. They actually listened to what Martha wanted- a book that would appeal to the children and tested their book with a focus group. So many of the people on Matchstick seemed really cutthroat. I didn't like most of the ones that the show focused on. Jeff was probably the most dictatorial project manager that I can remember. The exchange between him and Dawn was horrible to watch. I can't believe some of the things he said, "shut up", "I need you to not be likable, be powerful...", "you're failing..." He was just awful. The cat fight in the conference room between Dawn and Bethenny was like a pair of preteens fighting. This was a really unpleasant group of people. I hated Jim, too. I thought Shawn looked a lot like Alexis. Chuck and Marcela have possibilities. We haven't seen anything yet from the Danny clone. I was impressed with several of the women on Primarius (I haven't distinguished the blondes yet- ) and Howie will be fun to watch. Overall, I enjoyed the show. I liked Martha. Whether Charles and Alexis can fill Carolyn and George's shoes remains to be seen.

I had the same thought when they were splitting up the teams, but in the end they were just following instructions and finding a common theme amongst themselves. It always takes me 10 episodes to figure out who's who, but I saw enough of Jeff to know he was a miserable human being. His parting shot at Jim after he got fired wasn't necessary. His comments to Dawn about joining him in the shower were equally inappropriate (it wasn't sexual harassment or anything but it was juvenile). He showed his true colors on that task and he deserved his fate in pretty much every way. Jim is equally vain & despicable but he'll get his soon enough. No one else stood out to me except for maybe Howie, who has a self-deprecating sense of humor that I liked.

LAST EDITED ON 09-23-05 AT 02:56 PM (EST)I also was surprised they divided this way. I think it was a mistake & I hope Martha reorganizes the teams soon. Plus, unexpected self-definition was in play--I noticed that a member of the corporate Primarius team was a Creative Director out in the world. I would have thought she would be on the other team. In the corporate world, you have to express yourself in a clear & rational fashion. There is a clear (and somewhat repressive) ettiquette to follow. In more creative fields, things are looser, and a certain amount of propriety gets lost in the interest of free expression. I have a feeling we're only just beginning to see a clear separation between the two teams: Primarius (grown ups) and Matchstick (spoiled brats.) BTW, I think business people are creative, too!

4. "RE: Brainstorming" |
That reminds me--on all these shows, nobody knows how to brainstorm! It drives me nuts! Here's a lesson, people! Set a time limit. Whether it's 10 minutes or 2 hours doesn't matter. For that amount of time, say and write down every single idea. NO JUDGING! Every idea is a good idea at this stage. Ideas inspire other ideas! Flow! Write down everything. When the time is up, stop. NOW, edit the ideas. You cannot effectively create and edit at the same time. It must be a right brain / left brain issue.

I just caught the rerun on CNBC. Ok, I missed the first 20 minutes, where they picked the teams. But, I saw enough to have an opinon.I too was impressed with several of the women on Primarius, but probably for different reasons. The glass blower is centerfold material. Regarding your comment: ""I would have thought that the people on Primarius were the creative ones. They seemed so much nicer as a group. They countered the stereotype of a corporate personality."" I think said stereotype exists primarily among those that consider themselves 'the creative ones'.

Ladro, After two episodes of failure on Matchstick's part, I agree with you that labeling themselves "the creative ones" not only hurt them but may have caused them to underestimate the abilities of those on Primarius. At this point, I don't think Martha has too much faith in anyone on Matchstick.
