"Ishe Smith"
OK, I'm not a huge boxing fan, but I knew who two of the "contenders" were: Peter (sayonara!) AND Ishe Smith. Ishe won a huge fight last January (2004) against Randall Bailey, a former welterweight world champion, that put Ishe in the Top 10. All of the others seem to know him and to know about the fight, and it's easy to see that Ishe was a budding star:

http://www.doghouseboxing.com/Ed_Ludwig/Ishe_Smith_121903.htm
http://boxingtime.com/Ishe_Smith_Interview.htm

You may have noticed that Ishe became the leader on West right away -- probably because everyone knows of him.

In the deleted clips on Yahoo!, we see Ishe telling Jonathan about how badly he was ripped off on the Bailey fight (he took home merely $2K, although his contract was for $11K), how embarrased he is about how little he makes, and why he's on the show (he had to file for bankruptcy after beating Bailey, and he's totally drawn by the million). It's a great clip. But Burnett didn't show it, perhaps because he'd have to explain just how prominent Ishe is.

Burnett hasn't been making any point AT ALL about Ishe's ranking or his victory over the former world champion, nothing like the emphasis on Peter's WBO ranking. Instead, we saw Ishe as the master of the head game, and we saw Sugar Ray compare Ishe to himself in that regard. It looks like Burnett's trying to let us know Ishe, without building him up as one of the fighters to beat. In other words, keep him somewhat UTR, but build up a rooting interest in him as the leader, too.

Kinda like the way Burnett set up Colby in Survivor 2.

Right now, my money is on Ishe to make the finals, even though Ishe has been fighting at 147, and these fight are at 158. We'll just have to see.

Thanks Ayak. I had no clue who any of these fighters were. I love the sport of boxing and watch it from time to time, but haven't been following it lately. Hopefully, this show will rejuvenate a dying sport. It's a long shot, but then again, so was Rocky.

3. "Yeah, thanks AyaK!"
I'm with you Cappy.

I used to watch boxing, but after Mike Tyson somewhat ruined the glory of the sport for me I stopped.

I could very easily get back into watching the sport if I could feel the excitement that I used to.

Last night's episode brought back some of that excitement for me and I can't wait for the next episode.

By the way, I like Ishe so far!

One thing that's kind of interesting about the tension between Ishe and Khaddour (and I reminded Ishe about this this morning): Almost exactly one year ago, long before the show, I was in LA, covering a fight. Ahmed Khaddour was on the undercard, and Ishe called me up during the evening specifically to ask how Khaddour looked. I had never heard of the guy, but Ishe already had his eye on him, obviously.

I'm a boxing writer in Vegas, and a close friend of Ishe's. Here's a couple more pieces about him, that I have written, FYI:

http://www.maxboxing.com/news/mulvaney011404.asp
http://www.tigerboxing.com/articles/index.php?aid=1001244949

I spoke to Ishe for about an hour on the phone this morning. He's real excited about the show. There are lots of rumors around the LV boxing community about what happened during filming, but one of the big rumors was long that Manfredo made the final, so that shows how much stock to put in rumors! Ishe is keeping his lips tightly sealed, but is real excited about the series.

5. "Welcome"
Welcome, Kieran. I'll link to your interviews with Ishe in one of our stories on The Contender on this site. But from now on, in keeping with message-board tradition, I'll just refer to you as "VFW" (for your nic, VegasFightWriter).

I reported the Boxing Monthly "Peter in the finals" rumor in my pre-show piece, even though the screener showed us Peter getting eliminated in the first fight (but revealing that would have been a breach of screener protocol).

I had no idea about Ishe quitting boxing for four years and then, after returning, suing his mother to break his promotional contract. Frankly, I haven't followed boxing all that closely since I learned just how dirty of a business it was. Mothers cheating sons seems to go beyond the pale even for boxing, though!

I'm interested, though, in your take concerning the people that were promoting Ishe. As I noted earlier, on the Yahoo! website for the show, there's a clip in which Ishe says that he signed an $11,000 contract to fight Bailey, but he only made $2,000 take-home after all the fees (e.g., sanctioning fees) that he was hit with. Is that typical for LV promotions? I know he was also being touted for a fight on Showtime post-Bailey. Did that fall apart because of the back injury, the promotional problems or just general bad luck?

Finally, my comments about how far Ishe goes are merely speculation based on the editing, not a rumor. I don't have any rumors to go by (except for the Manfredo rumors, which I think we've traced back to a member of Peter's family, BTW -- and which still have more to them, but we're holding off reporting them until we can see if they have any substance).

6. "RE: Welcome"
LAST EDITED ON 03-09-05 AT 01:58 AM (EST)

Thank you for the welcome. I've been a long time dabbler in reality shows, but this is the first one that has me sufficiently motivated to join the boards.

To take the final part of your post first, I have heard one rumor concerning how far Ishe goes in the show--which doesn't come from him, of course. He wouldn't even confirm to me he was on the show until NBC put out a press release. The rumor was surprisingly specific. Not knowing the protocol about posting spoilers, I wouldn't want to say anything until suitably guided, and anyway don't know how reliable it is.

As for Ishe and his promoter--well, it's tough. His promoter insists that the reason Ishe didn't get much for the Bailey fight is because he had personally fronted him $45K, and was trying to get some of his investment back. Ishe flat out denies that he was given any money like that at all. The post-Bailey fight was all set until Ishe hurt his back, and it was while he was laid up that all of his other monetary issues came to a boil and he was forced to declare bankruptcy. I would say that the general sentiment in the community ran against Ishe, who was the third fighter in a matter of weeks to declare bankruptcy and thus no longer be bound by his contract; but, as his friend, I stand in his corner. He has resolutely refused to throw stones, and has always said, when the documents are all public, the truth will be clear.

Incidentally, his mother was FURIOUS with me for my reporting in that story, absolutely furious. And to clarify, I should point out that his mother voluntarily released him from his contract, even as Ishe did have the necessary papers for termination drawn up. Mothers and sons going at it is highly unusual, but interfamilial conflict is all too common in boxing--as indeed, is conflict generally.

11. "Spoilers"
Posting spoilers is entirely up to your judgment. There are three possible practices that we've done:

1) Keep them to yourself. Safe but dull.
2) Post them yourself. Fun, but whoever you heard the spoiler from might not like it.
3) E-mail them to this site, and we'll decide whether to post them in a "speculative" news article or not. That way, no one outside RTW knows the source of the information ... unless, of course, the person who told it to you is the only other person who knows it!

Yes Ishe Smith is da' man.
Notice how Ishe Smith took control of the locker room conversation when it came down to picking who would face who? You can tell the fellas have respect for him.
You can also tell Ishe Smith has respect for Alfonso Gomez because he let Gomez jump in and request to fight Peter Manfredo JR.

Now I believe the pugs have a new fond respect for Alfonso Gomez.
Remember that Ishe Smith defeted Alfonso Gomez in 2001. Alfonso's only defete as a pro and you all seen what a good fighter Gomez is but again Ishe Smith is da' man to watch. I got my eye on him too

WBO? is that the Wrong boxing organization lol.
I show
Peter Manfredo Jr
Sex Male
Nationality United States
Alias Junior
Global Id US-RI-018537
License No. RI058979
Hometown Pawtucket, RI, USA
Birthplace Providence, RI, USA
Division Middleweight
World Rank 35
Date of Birth 1980-11-26
Age 24
Stance Orthodox
Height 5' 10
Trainer Peter Manfredo Sr.
Manager Vito DeLuca
won 21 (10 ko's) - lost 1 - drawn 0 - tot 22

THE WBO still lists Sanders as # 6 in the HW devision
and Wladimir Klitschko as # 2
But Sanders stomped Klitschko who than lost to Lamon Brewster who is # 1 witout ever winning a fight against a undefeated fighter and refuses to get in the ring with Mesi, Ruiz, or Byrd.
I think I was even in the WBO top 10 at one point, and I spent more time in the catscan than I did in the ring.

Ishe Smith, my understanding is IBF, WBA has decided not to move his ranking untill the end of the Contenders season. The rec however will update his "estimated" ratings base on a show by show (thats pretty cool)system they invented to be fair to all involved (AKA Las Vegas). Bastards.
Don’t trust the WBO, they care nothing about boxing or boxers, they are a greedy organization run by trial lawyers, Oh how I hate lawyers!!! There should be a law against them.
Know what you call 1000 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean?
Expectable amounts of pollution.
Holy crap Im a long winded bastard, you guys need to limit how many words I should be alowed to type.

17. "Agree, but..."
...all of the ranking organizations are greedy SOBs. I'm using WBO, which is the least important of the four, because Burnett did too.

BTW, here are the WBO rankings from August -- when Ishe matched Peter as #3-ranked. Jesse was ranked too, even though The Contender treated him like an underdog against Jonathan Reid. Still haven't heard anyone mention either Ishe or Jesse's WBO rankings on the show, only Peter's:

JR. MIDDLEWEIGHT (69,85KGS)(154LBS)
World Boxing Organization August, 2004
Position Name Country
Champion: DANIEL SANTOS PR
1. Sergeii Dzinziruk (Int- Cont) (EBU) UKR
2. Kofi Jantuah GHA
3. Peter Manfredo, Jr. (NABO) USA
4. Ricardo Mayorga NIC
5. Michele Piccirillo ITA
6. Rodney Jones USA
7. Matt Vanda USA
8. Marco A. Rubio (Latino) MEX
9. Keith Holmes USA
10. Vernon Forrest USA
11. Roman Karmazin RUS
12. Wayne Alexander GB
13. Lucas Konecny CZE
14. Jesse Brinkley USA
15. Bronco McKart USA

WELTERWEIGHT (66,68KGS)(147LBS)
World Boxing Organization August, 2004
Position Name Country
Champion: ANTONIO MARGARITO (MEX)
INTERIM CHAMPION KERMIT CINTRON (PR)
1. Zab Judah (Int-Cont) USA
2. Sebastian Lujan ARG
3. Ishe Smith (NABO) USA
4. Federic Klose (EBU) FRA
5. Newton Villareal COL
6. Walter Dario Matthysee (Latino) ARG
7. Michael Jennings GB
8. Carlos Baldomir ARG
9. Joshua Clottey GHA
10. Michael Trabant GER
11. David Barnes GB
12. Freddy Hernandez MEX
13. Carlos Quintana PR
14. Chris Smith USA
15. Randall Bailey USA

In August 2004, Ishe was the only person on the show ranked with the WBA (8th), the IBF (5th) and the WBC (6th). He is no longer shown in the February 2005 WBA, IBF or WBC rankings, so it doesn't look like his ranking was "frozen" there.
