1. "It seems to lack focus"
The cutting back and forth from the gym to the apartment to the family life is too random. There's not enough of a narrative stream being created.

Editing sucks so far.

I thought the same about the opening sequence. They intro them and then all of sudden they are sparring. There was no smooth transition.

5. "RE: It seems to lack focus"
Having watched it three weeks ago via the screener DVD NBC sent me, I have to say that the initial editing is a little more choppy when commercials are mixed in. I think the issue is that by it's nature, its going to be edited more like Survivor than The Apprentice (its going to have the same type of "camp life" stuff you see in Survivor and generally don't see in The Apprentice, where the planning of the task, the execution of the task, and the boardroom don't leave time for much else.

That makes sense. Nice comparison!

BTW: There has to be spoiler potential out there! There are plenty of peeps in the stands during the fights.

3. "Middle part had better structure"
The challenge followed by strategy session followed by the calling out ceremony had a nice sense of structure to it.

The challenge could have been a little more exciting. Running up a road with logs was kinda lame. Maybe if they had to lug the logs up the side of the rock strewn hillside it would have been more dramatic.

The return to home segments are working better now. It's like an extended Survivor confessional mixed with a family visit. It makes the lead into the fight more compelling. This editing is working.

I have to wonder if the structure will be better when it is only 1 hour and we begin to get to know all of the boxers. It seemed at the beginning they had to "somewhat" introduce most of the guys.

31. "Can't see the slope"
Ice, I've walked that road up Mount Lee (where the Hollywood sign is). It's a killer. I didn't come close to reaching the top before I was exhausted and went back down. My kids rode up it on horseback. The slope was so steep that my younger daughter was afraid to ride back on her own and had to have the guide lead her horse.

I know the slope couldn't really be seen on TV, but I'll tell you from experience that the challenge must have been grueling.

Well fought and well edited. Very much like the Rocky films with lots of crowd reaction shots punctuating the ring action. Slow motion was used to good effect as well.

Toe to toe most of the time and they traded rounds right up to the 5th and last round.

I liked the fight too, and the way it was edited. They added in the croud screaming (sounded like 10,000 people when there were only a couple of hundred there) and they added in punch noises but you could tell it was a "real" fight. And a good one at that.

lol, yeah I went back and read that last line and had a good laugh

I guess that's really the only way you could have known - but I guess I just read it as being more speculative, like he probably goes far but doesn't make the final or something. once we got to the fight I was less sure, but at the moment of the callout, I expected the "we'll have to wait and see if that strategy works" to be answered with a "NO"

Ya, it was intentionally designed to be vague and subject to multiple interpretations. You can only give away so many spoilers when they're coming from a screener (otherwise they'll never send you another screener) -- its a different set of spoiling rules

???? Mike Tyson ruined boxing for you? One guy? Why do people say that? Did Bill Romanowski ruin football for you, Did Conseco ruin baseball for you? What about Alan Iverson? I hate when people say that, Mike Tyson has been a nobody since 1989, he has not been able to beat anyone since than. Let it go man!
Ruined boxing? we are now watching what may be the best set of boxers ever, there is more to boxing than 220 pound guys knocking eachother out with one punch, watch the fight on March 19th and tell me boxing is ruined...Idiot

Just wanted to clarify before I assume, are you calling me an idiot?

Yes, Mike Tyson ruined boxing FOR ME!

I have not watched boxing regularly since his rise and fall.

My opinion, my feelings and I am entitled to it. If you disagree, you are entitled to that, but to make such a general statement to me about other random people and other random sports and ask me to clarify what others may or may not mean is unfair and unecessary.

My apologies; unfortunately I have a passion for a sport and really don’t have the brainpower to articulate the words to back that passion in text.
I did not mean to suggest your were an idiot, that was a failed attempt at humor in regards to the small guys that are boxing the 19th. Something to do with Napoleon, and an old cartoon.
Again pardon my use of words, I am not all that bright of a man, but please note while I do dislike when people view boxing as Mike Tyson, at no time did I mean to call you an idiot.
Again I am sorry, please forgive my lack of character on this issue.

Thank you, although uneccessary, I appreciate it.

As far as my comment, I was not bashing boxing as a whole and did not ever imply the entire sport was ruined. The sport is great and I am liking this show already. My comment was intended to state that I haven't enjoyed the sport this much in a very long time.

Oh, and I would also like to say, "Welcome to the boards!"

Bashing other posters is not permitted on Reality TV World. You may challenge another's view, but calling him/her/it an "idiot" is an action that we do not permit. Please take a moment and acquaint yourself with the community guidelines.

If you'd left off this tag, the rest of your post was fine. If you'd called one of the contestants an idiot, that would have been fine. But note this guideline:

II. DO NOT ATTACK OTHER MEMBERS
Personal attacks on other members will not be tolerated. Challenging the points of view and the opinions of other members is permitted, but only as long as you can do so respectfully and thoughtfully, without personal attack or insult. I admit that I agree with your sentiment; boxing doesn't begin and end with heavyweights. Never did, no matter what the HBOs of the world think, and it never will.

P.S. A suggestion: you don't need to reply using "Reply with quote" every time, since most people reading your post will assume it's a reply to the previous post. Just use "Reply."

I have to voice a dissenting opinion. The fight was very well fought, but the editing drove me nuts. I kept feeling like I was missing the fight itself and watching the highlights on the 10 o'clock news. The cutting was stimulating but I found it very distracing over the course of the fight. I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm a boxing fan, but I do like watching a regular match. Am I the only one?!

The only problem with that is if you showed a five-round fight in it's entirety, it would be 20 minutes long. So you're gonna have to edit it. I think they did a great job given the circumstances.

I agree. The editing of the fight was a whole lot better than it was in The Next Great Fox Cancellation, but I would still rather see the whole fight than only the action shots. Half of boxing is all the dancing around and positioning to finally be able to pound your opponent.

33. "Right"
There was a lot of controversy about how to show the fight ahead of time. Burnett decided to make the entire fight available on the Web but to limit the portion in the show to highlights of key action. He was convinced that women would lose interest in a real fight showed in its entirety (especially with the clutching and grabbing -- see "Ruiz, John" for an example).

I have to believe he's right, because the premiere did much lower numbers among women than men, even with the edited fight.

It's cool that we have access to the whole fight somewhere, which makes it OK if they don't show the whole thing during the episode because at least we can watch it.

He was convinced that women would lose interest in a real fight showed in its entirety...

I have to say, even as a boxing writer, when I first heard about the show, I thought there was no way it would succeed because I couldn't imagine prime-time viewers watching boxing. I think the way they are doing it--focusing on the people, big build-up to each fight, and the fight itself relatively brief and edited--is the only way for them to go. I think it makes great sense. I want to see boxing, I can always turn on HBO; this show needs to be about the boxers, not the boxing.

I guess this is why they advertise it as "The next great human drama." Or whatever the commercial says.

I agree with you here, we rarely get to see the person behind the athlete (and that goes for any sport) and this show is giving us that "inside look". It makes the boxers more real.

Oh, and welcome to the boards to you! It will be nice to have some insight from you as we go through the season.

Yeah that was a bit hard, but when you only know winning it can be very difficult to lose. With a 21-0 record, he had to suffer a loss at some time in his career. It's must be devastating for him to come into this with such high hopes and be the first one out. This sport is their lives.

This part was really hard to watch. This isn't like getting booted on The Apprentice; it's much more real than most reality TV.

On the other hand, it serves as a great hook for the next episode. You know that these guys are REALLY into their sport; there isn't anyone here just looking for a Mark Burnett-paid vacation.

I know that kind of touched me too and I was left thinking about Najai Turpin. Whom many people are blamming the show for his death. Another nice hook by the producer. I do feel like they are trying to cash in and milk that whole contraversy into the ratings.

Screeners for this episode were prepared and shipped prior to Najai's suicide. So nothing in this episode was re-edited as a result of Najai's suicide. I can't say that about subsequent episodes, of course, but I can say for certain that this one was untouched.

I liked it and I don't like boxing. I thought the 90 minutes was too long and drawn out, but things definately picked up at the challenge and then on. I hope the 60 minutes will keep it flowing better. It was very apparant to me from the beginning though that Peter Manfredo was the guy that was going to lose tonight. He was the only one that was developed with the inside stuff.

Wow I can't believe that Manfredo lost! Holy crap that guy seemed like one of the shoe-ins! I thought (as did he) that they were going to choose my cousin Jeff, because he is "the little guy". Then that Alfonso stepped up and everyone thought he was crazy... but he kicked butt! It just shows that there's hope for the underdogs. I feel really bad for Manfredo though... I was thinking that maybe having his daughter there for the first time, maybe that distracted him. I can't believe he lost, especially that he was the first to lose. Crazy!

Welcome to the boards! I had read your earlier post and I was thinking about you when they were selecting the boxers and your cousin was a possibility. I thought, "Boy, is he (Jeff) going to be our first fighter?"

Haha yeah that's what we were all saying! Jeff knew it too, he said it right to the camera, the other team picked him first too, until Alfonso stepped up. But you know, Jeff could do the same thing - they will underestimate him and then he'll make them regret it! His record is 16-2 with 10 knockouts! I don't know really anything about boxing, but I know that Jeff's been known to hang back at first and then just come back with a vengence and knock em out.

I was worried though that he'd be the first to fight - and though I had faith in him, you never know what will happen - which is quite obvious after watching this show!

'... But you know, Jeff could do the same thing - they will underestimate him and then he'll make them regret it!'

Now wouldn't that be one hell of a second episode? The West wins another challenge and plays it safe by calling up Jeff against their own biggest threat setting up a real David and Goliath battle. Jeff initially takes a pounding through four rounds with the match nearly called several times and finally Jeff wins it with a shocking KO in the 5th. Episode two has its hero and parity between the the two teams is re-established.

If I was writing the script, that's what I'd do!

Maybe his daughter did distract him? or maybe the thought of fighting a solid puncher that hasnt lost more than 5 fight in his career was to much for him. I know sly said Manfredo was good, but in all truth, the only good solid fighter he ever beat was Sherwin Davis, or maybe Anthony Bosante. Wait he already faught Anthony Bosante? so why is Anthony on the contender?

I agree. I thought tonight's show was excellent. 90 minutes is a lot of time to fill, but I think MB will get his legs and the show will will take off from here. Let's hope they get the ratings needed to keep this one going.

Why couldn't they get a babysitter for Pete's daughter during the fight. Great drama seeing the little girl in the dressing room; but, having her on her mom's hip in a frenzied mob watching her father being hit, bleeding, and eventually losing, I found to be very distrubing. Anyone else or am I a prude?

Definitely a little troubling, I agree. My emotions were very mixed about this. as to why, I guess it was left to his discretion. which only makes it more bizarre, imo. seeing her father being the hitter rather than the hittee could potentially be more damaging.

LAST EDITED ON 03-08-05 AT 08:49 PM (EST)

I'm sure Burnett would have arranged for a sitter had Peter and his wife so wanted.

I think Peter wanted to have his daughter see him win the million dollars. Remember, his daughter has probably seen him spar in the gym (especially since her grandfather -- Peter's father -- OWNS the gym), so she's not a novice at watching boxing, and I doubt that she's really aware of the outcome. There's a cute scene in the deleted clips on Yahoo! of Peter holding her up in the air, alone in the center of the ring after the fight, and everyone cheers for her.

The only traumatizing part, IMHO, would be watching her father's reaction after his defeat. Therefore, Peter had to pretend (at least in the ring with her) that he wasn't broken up by the outcome ... which probably made it harder for him after the upset loss.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I had only been thinking about him saying she'd never seen him fight, but she very well could have seen him spar before, and I agree she's probably too young to really comprehend it anyway (although I go back and forth here, because that could cut both ways). That would indeed lessen the concern. Still, it's an interesting question in the abstract at the very least

I, personally, have bever been to a bxoing match... so, does anyone know if its common to have toddlers there? I mean, if Chuck Norris and Melanie Griffith are there, it must be a wholesome event, non?
I am a fan of the Burnet reality programs... but it was pretty low to have the child at the match. The producers should have encouraged some type of care for the child. Even, Jennifer Flavin, crayons, and a colouring book in the dressing room?
I was really surprised this issue wasn't disscused on television today. With all the concern of media violence and the effects on children...
It was in poor taste to have a child at a boxing match that could lead to a million $ purse.
It was just really creepy to see the toddler in the mob (and I think she looked overwhelmed and scared) while her mother was absorbed in the "beating".
Poor taste.
It would be interesting, if someone in the know, would find out if the little girl has gone to her father's major matches - sparing in grandpa's gym is a bit different than the set-up on reality TV.

I'm a boxing writer in Las Vegas (and am actually a close friend of Ishe Smith, one of the participants) and yes, it really is quite common for fighters to have their young kids at ringside--although not, it must be said, very often that young. The kids, I tend to find, seem to allow it all to wash over them all a lot more easily than the adults; to them, it's just a way of life.

The Manfredos are a boxing family...the child is and probably will be exposed to boxing for her entire life. Her father is a boxer...her grandfather is a boxer...her uncles are boxers. I really do not see it as a big deal that she was at the fight...yes it is a violent sport but it is her fathers occupation and I am sure she has seen boxing on TV and at the gym etc...

Maybe the first time she saw a fight live it is going to be a little traumatic but it is something I am sure she will quickly accept as part of her familys life (if she hasn't already). This is what this family does.

Jonathan Reid is considered to be the best fighter. Why? because he is the only one to fight a top ranked fighter, if Reid can fight his cravings to rob Gas Stations he will win it all.
Manfredo was 21-0 and only ever faught one good fighter well maybe two if you count Anthony Bonsante who is of course on the show,(how did that happen?) 21-0 reps nothing! Hopkins was 21-1 does that one loss make him less than Manfredo? Records are only as strong as the fighters you faught and Manfredo has yet to fight anyone world class. The best fighter he ever faught was Alfonso Gomez who is ranked 32nd in the world, Manfredo is ranked 39th, and you saw what Alfonso Gomez did to him.

I'm trying to make the point that, although its a reality show, I think the producers tried to make the fight even more dramatic by having a toddler in the "scene." She didn't have to be there. Her naiveté was exploited (is that reality television?). And, I too, am naive of the boxing world.
In my opinion, as always, it was in bad taste. A different world, I guess.
Hey, VegasFightWriter, tell Ishe that he has a prude of a fan in Northern Ontario!
