I was just listening to a radio discussion with a law professor. So let's see...$40,000/yr benefits x 10% x 200 scholarships/school x how many Div. I and II schools? x 125 yrs = ??? I think we may have just solved our national debt. Would Notre Dame students have to pay? Serious question. I know churches are non-taxable. So far as I know, everyone pays income tax (or at least files a return). Religious and other non- or not-for-profit organizations can avoid business income taxes and don't have to pay sales taxes for anything purchased for the direct use of the organization. The only special consideration I know for religious employees is that clergy, but not anyone else employed by a religious institution, can exempt themselves from paying in to social security. There's some kind of "against my religion" clause in there, I've heard. But if they don't pay in, they are ineligible to receive anything from it, too.
